From 1820 until 1926, Tracy Park was the home of the Davy family, and it is Charles Raikes Davy who is responsible for the present day appearance of the house and grounds. His father, General Sir William Gabriel Davy, who purchased Tracy Park, in 1820, was from an old Gloucestershire military family based in the Kingsholme area of Gloucester - the General along with many of his ancestors are interred in a vault in Gloucester Cathedral.[1]

In 1814, William Davy (at this stage in his career a lieutenant-colonel) had married a widow, Mary Ann Carruthers, the eldest daughter and heiress of Thomas Arthington, whose estate and home was Arthington Hall, near Adel, Leeds.[2][3]to be reffed</ref> Carruthers brought with her to the marriage, not only five children, but the Arthington Hall estate, which she had inherited from her father in 1801, and the patronage of Adel Chuch, where she and Davy were married. [4]

The couple made Arthington Hall their home, and their only child, Charles Raikes Davy was born there in 1814.[5]. However, from 1820, they resided at Tracy Park where Mary Ann Davy died in August 1836. [6] She bequeathed Arthington Hall to her second son, William Arthington-Carruthers. He sold the estate circa 1848 to William Sheepshanks. [7][8]

The year before his wife's death, King William IV had knighted Davy and made him a Knight Commander of the Royal Guelphic Order .[9][10] Davy married again in 1840; his new wife was Sophia Wilson, the daughter of R F Wilson, of Melton Yorkshire. [11]






Charles Raikes Davy (1814 - 1885) was a Church of England clergyman, a magistrate for the county of Gloucester, an eminent Freemason and member of the English squirearchy. Upon the death of his father, General Sir William Gabriel Davy, in 1856, he inherited the Tracy Park estate, in Gloucestershire, where he rebuilt the mansion in an eccentric architectural design incorporating many symbolic masonic motifs.

Early Life (temporarily over genealogied and check ancestry discrepancy)[edit]

Charles Raikes Davy was born in Adel, Yorkshire, in 1818, the parish where his father, an officer in the British Army, William Gabriel Davy, had married his mother, Mary Ann nee Carruthers (born 1797), on 20 Jun 1814. [12]. Mary Ann, the daughter of John Carruthers, was born in 1797 [13] Her parents has had married in 1795 [14] Mary Ann's mother, also Mary Ann, was the daughter of Thomas Arthington who lived of nearby Arthington Hall, an estate approximately 4 miles from Adel.

Ordination and curacy[edit]

Davy was appointed vicar of Adel in 1854 by his own father who through his marriage into the Arthington family, was patron of the living [15]

The Reverend Charles Raikes Davy of Tracy Park, Bath, died at the Albion Hotel, Gloucester, on Christmas Morning. He was the son of General Sir William Davy, and was a magistrate for the county of Gloucester. He was past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, and lately provincial Grandmaster of Mark Masons for Gloucestershire. He married a niece of the late Dean Law. He was born in 1819.   • 1873:Joanna Davy was the daughter of Reverend Charles Raikes Davy.2 She married Alexander Edward Pole, son of Reverend Reginald Pole and Jane Powell, on 23 July 1873.1 She died on 10 January 1930.1

  • The Davy Lodge No.299, named for the first PGM, met for a few years at Wotton under Edge before ceasing to exist. The more recent Lodge No.1449, also named for V.W.Bro. Davy, meeting at Chipping Sodbury, has a large portrait of our first Provincial Grand Master in its Temple[18]

In 1804 the patronage passed to the

Lewthwaite family, the present Patrons. In 1821, of 120 families in Adel, 104 were employed in agriculture. During Rector Lewthwaite’s (1809- 1854) time....looks like he may have succeeded a maternal relation om 1854

This one too mentions a second marriage [2], but means she would have been well over 44 when William Raikes Davy was born.

[4] says: On the death of Thomas Arthington in 1801, the Arthington estate passsd to his daughter, Mrs. Carruthers, of Dormont, N.B., afterwards Lady Davie. Her son, Wm. T. Arthington Carruthers, Esq., of Arthington Hall, sold the estate about 1848 to Wm. Sheepshanks, Esq., who died at Harrogate in 1872, aged 86. He erected and endowed at his sole cost the large and beautiful church at Arthington, one of the handsomest modem churches in the diocese. It was consecrated Aug. 17th, 1864. Arthington Hall, (E. A. Brotherton, Esq.,) is the property of the Rev. Thos. Sheepshanks, M.A., and is a large mansion in the Italian style, dating from the early part of the i8th century.|| Considerable alterations and improvements have, however, been made to it, and in 1877 a wing was added from designs by Mr. Alfred Waterhouse, R.A.
