From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blue Stragglers are anomalous stars that are bluer and hotter than they ought to be. They are called stragglers because hot stars should age faster than cold stars, and evolve toward becoming red giants. By staying blue instead of turning red, they "straggle" in the blue zone of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, where other strange things happen to them, mostly because they are probably Contact binaries. My interest in blue stragglers began in 1988 when I worked as a research assistant in astronomy, searching for dwarf cepheid blue stragglers. The professional interest became a useful pseudonym and remained so long after I left astronomy moved on to diverse other fields, including particle physics[1], science fiction writing[2], web development[3], and fencing[4][5].
