Italics

Hi Primefac, as I have stated a few times before, thank you for your herculean effort in merging all of the multi-sport event templates earlier this year. As you may have seen I have been busily updating the nations at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships and the nations at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics articles using the single {{Infobox country at games}}. The one functionally that I noticed though that hasn't come across is the ability italicise future editions of events. For example all of the nations at the 2018 Commonwealth Games articles (which I will updating between now and April 2018). Would it possible to update the template and modules to show for example:

2010 · 2014 · 2018

Kind Regards – Ianblair23 (talk) 05:28, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

That should be fairly easy to code into practice. I'll take a look and see what I can do. Primefac (talk) 15:47, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Done - the show page shows a lot of redlinks, but I am assuming that they will eventually turn blue. Plus, they're in italics, which is really the relevant change. Primefac (talk) 16:00, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks PrimefacIanblair23 (talk) 21:16, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

I did some minor tweaks: diff. That sets the current year to 2017 at the moment, and 2018 next year, etc. Example:

{{Team appearances list|competition= Commonwealth Games|team=Anguilla}}

The output uses html for the italics. That seems to be better because previewing the above example at Special:ExpandTemplates shows it is all html (generated by Module:List). Johnuniq (talk) 05:40, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Johnuniq. I wasn't sure how to code in the current year (and yes, I should have probably asked about it) but I didn't even think about the <i>...</i> option. Looks much better now.
On the subject of "things I keep meaning to get around to", would you mind taking a look at the section directly above this one regarding another possible tweak? I've been mulling it over in my head but it would help to have someone to bounce ideas off. Primefac (talk) 13:24, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
Per above, that's done. Johnuniq (talk) 05:09, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

What are you doing DSQ years

  • example: Russia excluded 2016 Summer Paralympics
{{Team appearances list
| begin_year = 1996
|competition= Summer Paralympics
|team= Russia
}}
  • mean:

{{Team appearances list | begin_year = 1996 | end_year = 2012 | disqualfield_year = 2016 |competition= Summer Paralympics |team= Russia}}

1996 · 2000 · 2004 · 2008 · 2012 · 2016

Simon 1996 (talk) 11:57, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

That's a good idea. I'll look into it. Primefac (talk) 11:48, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

I implemented this, examples:

  • {{Team appearances list|begin_year=1996|end_year=2016|disqualified_year=2016|competition=Summer Paralympics|team=Russia}}
  • {{Team appearances list|begin_year=2010|end_year=2022|interval=2|disqualified_year=2020|competition=Example|team=Russia}}

The second example is contrived to show that it works with future years (italics). It is hard to imagine how that would ever be useful, but the module has to do something. It currently allows only a single disqualified year, although some of the code works for any number of such years. Also, there is currently no way to define a disqualified year in Module:Team appearances list/data. That can be address if needed in the future. Johnuniq (talk) 05:08, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

I think it's fairly rare that a DQ'd team would also have a page for that year; it was a major deal in '16 simply due to the fact that the Russians were given the boot what, a month beforehand? (i.e. the page was already created and could be populated) Most of the time it's like Kuwait, who gets "kicked out" but then still participates as independent athletes.
Either way, thanks for implementing this. Primefac (talk) 13:31, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

I guess Estonia did not participate 2014 Winter Paralympics: 2014_Winter_Paralympics#Participating_National_Paralympic_Committees. Thanks. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 18:51, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

Oh, and neither did South Africa. I guess there may be more countries. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 19:52, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, feel free to compile a list and let me know. Primefac (talk) 19:59, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
Didn't really get into it, just those two caught my eye. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 20:52, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

NOCs not at 2018 Winter Olympics

I'm just starting a list for myself for updating the 2018 Winter Olympics lists for the countries not appearing. Please let me know if I'm missed/messed up anything. The listed entries without anything following them just need the 2018 added.

  • British Virgin Islands
  • Cayman Islands - ["Cayman Islands"] = {2018, begin_year=2010},
  • Dominica - ["Dominica"] = {2018, begin_year=2014},
  • Nepal - ["Nepal"] = {2018, begin_year=2002},
  • Paraguay - ["Paraguay"] = {2018, begin_year=2014},
  • Peru - ["Peru"] = {2018, begin_year=2010},
  • Russia done
  • Tajikistan - ["Tajikistan"] = {2018, begin_year=2002},
  • Venezuela
  • Virgin Islands
  • Zimbabwe - ["Zimbabwe"] = {2018, begin_year=2014},

I'll probably end up updating the module once the final (final) numbers come out, just in case there are any last minute additions/drops. Primefac (talk) 14:27, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Some countries to exlude: Costa Rica at the Olympics, Fiji at the Olympics, Ethiopia at the Olympics. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 13:59, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

Athletics Indoor

Is it possible to add IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics? There's already few article and maybe also add European Athletics Indoor Championships for future purpose (currently I only found Greece). --Pelmeen10 (talk) 09:31, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, it's on my to-do list. Primefac (talk) 14:48, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

Awesome, thanks. Will get to this in the next few days. Primefac (talk) 11:37, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Done. Let me know if I missed/mistyped anything. Primefac (talk) 13:56, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you know why 1934 is missing here? Will look into others. I know I left out Yugoslavia/SCG and Germany's, maybe even something else. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 14:07, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Because they didn't compete, meaning that their first year was 1938. As for YUG et al, if they don't have articles there's not much rush to add them in, really. Primefac (talk) 14:20, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
I meant why it's not in grey, but I guess no reason and maybe that's the standard. Some additions: Albania (missed 1934, 1946-1962, 1969-1986) and Cyprus (according to EAA since 1986, but 1974 here and there's also Cyprus at the 1978 European Athletics Championships). Spain since 1950. Romania & Hungary missed 1950, Portugal missed 1946. Luxembourg missed 1998 and 2002. EAA lists West Germany-Years entered: 54/66/69/71/74/78/82/86/90. East Germany-Years entered: 66/69/71/74/78/82/86/90. Germany-Years entered: 34/38/58/62/94/98/02/06/10/12/14/16. Yugoslavia-Years entered: 34/38/46/50/54/58/62/66/69/71/74/78/82/86/90/94/98/02. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 14:57, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

Great. Last thing is the situation with Russia. They are suspended from 2015. At the 2016 edition, only Yuliya Stepanova participated as Independent Athletes (EAA). At 2018, there's 30 Russians competing as Authorised Neutral Athletes. I guess it should be marked grey aswell (like at World Champioships and Olympics). --Pelmeen10 (talk) 16:17, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, it would be greyed out, with a "see also" link to the EAA/ANN page for them. I've got to head out for a bit but I'll see about doing that when I get back. Primefac (talk) 16:21, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean; if a team never played in the X Olympics then we just don't put their links up. Primefac (talk) 01:14, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

OK, but the SWZ stands for Eswatini https://www.buenosaires2018.com/results/en/all-sports/noc-schedule-eswatini.htm?lng=en Pelmeen10 (talk) 22:23, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

If and when we have an article about it, I'll make the necessary changes. Primefac (talk) 19:07, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: @2018_Summer_Youth_Olympics#Participating_National_Olympic_Committees, {{flagIOC|SWZ|2018 Summer Youth|3}} produces  Eswatini (3) - it's not correct. Pelmeen10 (talk) 21:28, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
Fair point. I'll start coding. Primefac (talk) 17:04, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Done. I should mention that at this exact point in time, this will only trigger for 2018 events where SWZ is used, because I was in a bit of a rush. I'll clean it up later once I get some more time to figure out the best switches. Primefac (talk) 18:49, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

Congo

Done. Primefac (talk) 11:22, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: this edit caused some problems with the rest of the articles that now only have red links, for example Congo at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, Congo at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, Congo at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics, Congo at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships. Pelmeen10 (talk) 14:47, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
That's because the other pages haven't been moved to their proper location (and/or "Republic of the Congo at XYZ" hasn't been created as a redirect). Primefac (talk) 15:09, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

West Asian Games

Hi, there were talks about having the games in 2016 but it never happened and there is no WAG scheduled for the future. I think you should remove that "2016" from the list, thanks. Mohsen1248 (talk) 07:13, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Change "Macedonia" in Summer/Winter Olympics to "North Macedonia"?

Can you change "Macedonia" to "North Macedonia" in the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics section? Might wait to change it in the rest, but at least those two (now that the Olympics use the country's new name). Paintspot Infez (talk) 12:12, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Where are you seeing this? At the moment (technically speaking) North Macedonia hasn't competed at the Olympics, but any generic {{FlagIOC}} links should be pointing towards North Macedonia at the Olympics. Primefac (talk) 15:39, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

1976 and 1980 championships

In this area please can 1976 and 1980 be added as they are currently missing. Sparkle1 (talk) 16:09, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

I don't remember if we had a conversation about this, but the "official" start was 1983. I have no issue adding it in, but a) is it correct, and b) do we even have articles in those categories? In other words, should we add it? Primefac (talk) 16:26, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
This source which is an official IAAF lists the 1976 and 1980 as 'world championships' it is only the numbering of the events which begins in 1983. Sparkle1 (talk) 21:07, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
Fair enough. I'll need a list of the countries that didn't participate in those first two games so I can exclude them from the template for those years. Primefac (talk) 13:02, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
Germany competed as both east and west along with the Soviet union competing. The Soviets did not take part in 1980. I hope the list is what you are after.

For 1976 the list of nations which did not compete is as follows:

For 1980 the list is as follows:

Done, at least until I can figure out the whole WCA / WAC split. Primefac (talk) 19:52, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
Russia needs to be put back as a non-particiipant as it appears that they have been now made a redlink instead of being greyed out. Russian athletes were only allowed to complete in 2019 as Authorised Neutral Athelets Sparkle1 (talkcontribs) 21:40, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Please switch on Norway participation at the 1904 Summer Olympics.

For now, IOC recognizes participation of two Norwegian wrestlers Charles Ericksen and Bernhoff Hansen at the 1904 Summer Olympics:

Russian Olympic Committee

With lots of Russian variations over the years, I feel like the infobox navigation needs some cleaning up. It used to be much simpler to do. For instance, looking here: Russian Olympic Committee athletes at the 2022 Winter Olympics, there is no OAR 2018 listed in related. but shows 2014 and 2018 Winter appearances for ROC, which is incorrect, since 2022 is the first time ROC is appearing at the Winter games. The overview is linking back to Independent Olympians at the Olympic Games but it should be linking to Russian Olympic Committee at the Olympics. Same for Olympic Athletes from Russia at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Looking at Russian Olympic Committee athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics it's even more wild! Even listing 1992 IOP as a previous Summer appearance for ROC. This needs correcting! OAR (2018) and ROC (2020 and 2022) appearances should only reference each other and Russia and link to each other, not other unrelated independent teams, and should properly show in all related appearances. Thank you!Jmj713 (talk) 20:19, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Moreover. OAR (2018) and ROC (2020 and 2022) must be the same infobox. It's just a renaming situation, not different entities. Something like Federal Republic of Yugoslavia / Serbia and Montenegro at the Olympics. Complete analogy: different names and codes, but one essence. Nitobus (talk) 20:43, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

You're putting the cart before the horse. Until about two hours ago all of the independent groups were pointing to the same place, because (by consensus a few years ago) we link all of the independent groups together. You've now started a discussion at WT:OLYMPICS, changed a bunch of articles, and are asking that things be changed. There is zero rush, let's let the conversation play out. If and when a consensus emerges to do something, the base templates can be updated to reflect that, but said templates are used in too many places for a single set of proposals which as of right now have no feedback to cause it all to be upended; the proposal could get shot down, meaning everything would need to be reverted, which is no good for templates. Patience please. I'm keeping an eye on the situation and am happy to go with whatever consensus dictates. Primefac (talk) 20:45, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
I was just looking at Russia at the Olympics and noticing all these inconsistencies. As I also just mentioned on the all-time medals talk page, combining OAR and ROC is also incorrect as Russia's NOC was banned and suspended when OAR participated, that was effectively an independent team of Russian athletes. I'm in no rush, I just want things to link logically and show properly. Not sure what kind of consensus is needed to make sure the infobox for ROC 2020 doesn't show them appearing in 1992 (which was IOP - former Yugoslavia). Jmj713 (talk) 20:53, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

India at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games

Edit requested for line 1062:

Current: ["India"] = {1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1994, 2014, begin_year=1964},

Requested: ["India"] = {1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1994, begin_year=1964},

Reason for change: India was re-instated as an official participating nation for the 2014 winter olympic games while the 2014 games were underway, so two athletes eventually participated under the Indian flag. For more info, see Independent Olympic Participants at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Additional reference for two Indian athelets at 2014 Winter Olympics:

Russia and Belarus not participating at the 2022 Winter Paralympics

As many of you are aware, Belarus and Russia will not compete as their respective countries in response to the recent Ukraine invasion and will play as neutral athletes all together for 2022. The Paralympics apparencies list for the Winter games should be updated to reflect the new changes we've received from the IPC. 20chances (talk) 16:18, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

I'll need more information to update the lists, specifically which code they'll be using and the "team's" official title. But sure, as soon as I get that I can update things. Primefac (talk) 20:10, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, according to https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1119966/rus-blr-athletes-still-to-receive-medals athletes from Belarus will be allowed to compete at the 2022 Winter Paralympics under the Paralympic Neutral Athletes name with delegation code PNA (and NPA is specifically for the delegation from Russia). However, as can be seen on that draft page, that currently doesn't work in the infobox. Would it be possible to add this code in the intended way so that the infobox works? I think they'll be competing under the same neutral Paralympics flag as well. Simeon (talk) 20:23, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Oh my. That is going to make things... interesting. I can add in a hotfix for now, but sorting out anything other than "make the infobox work" is going to take a day or two. Primefac (talk) 20:27, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
Also, while I realise that my complaint will likely mean nothing towards affecting anything, but it's a stupidly dumb decision to have two neutral teams competing in the same Games under two different names despite being sanctioned for the same reason. Primefac (talk) 20:33, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for adding the code, I think it should be ok to take the time to make adjustments elsewhere - we can now start adding results when the Games begin :) If I had to guess, I suspect they've used two codes because that'd make it easier to separate the athlete results and other administrative matters in their systems, but there may be another reason. Simeon (talk) 20:44, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
Wish I could have helped with it Primefac but I had to go mobile and I was busy ^^;. I do want to thank you and Simeon very much for the help since I wasn't sure where to find the info. 20chances (talk) 03:48, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
It appears that both Belarus and Russia won't compete at all anymore: https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1119989/russia-belarus. Should the information of both delegations perhaps be moved to 2022 Winter Paralympics and the PNA code be removed? Or is it better that there exists a code for all (intended) delegations, which would mean that BLR is represented as PNA code this event in our data? Simeon (talk) 08:34, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Should the information of both delegations perhaps be moved... - yes, or to Independent Paralympians at the Paralympic Games as a summary (similar to other teams)
and the PNA code be removed... - yes; they created the designation and then got rid of it within 24 hours, so I see zero reason to include it here. Redirect the PNA page to the 2022 Winter Paralympics page as we have done for other groups that withdraw or otherwise have no usable information. Primefac (talk) 09:12, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
I have copied some information from Neutral Paralympic Athletes at the 2022 Winter Paralympics to Independent Paralympians at the Paralympic Games so it might be possible to redirect the page. It's not entirely clear to me whether the Russian delegation on its own would now be notable enough for its own article but in any case the Independent Paralympians page now contains a summary. Simeon (talk) 09:46, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
If I'm reading you right and you're referring to the specific breakdowns of things like "number of athletes", that's trivia that doesn't necessarily need to be included anywhere; the total number of athletes is relevant but not much else. Primefac (talk) 09:58, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
I meant whether the Neutral Paralympic Athletes article should exist as a stand-alone article or whether it should redirect to the Independent Paralympians page. The summary on the Independent Paralympians page can be adjusted as needed (with any trivia removed) but it's not clear whether we should redirect the article about the Russian delegation or whether some might say it should have a stand-alone article, as there's a history with both the doping-related and war-related sanctions. Simeon (talk) 10:05, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
A paragraph or two about the suspensions should be given at 2022 Winter Paralympics (probably under the "participating nations" section) but as far as I am aware teams that have been outright prohibited from competing do not have articles.
That being said, I think this is a discussion better to hold at WT:OLYMPICS than here (which I've now done), since it will get more eyes. Primefac (talk) 10:27, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks :) I think redirecting makes sense, as long as there's consensus. Simeon (talk) 11:26, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Question about unwanted link to a redirect

I've tried but I'm not sure how to get it to ignore a redirect without preventing future appearances.

At Kenya at the Olympics and List of flag bearers for Kenya at the Olympics it's linking to the 2022 Olympics via the redirect Kenya at the 2022 Winter Olympics. I have tagged the redirect for deletion because Kenya did not participate in those games. Whether it's deleted or not, in the meantime, how do I suppress the link and still link to future appearances without someone having to modify the code on those articles the next time Kenya does compete in a winter Olympics? --DB1729 (talk) 14:33, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Haiti at the 1936 Summer Olympics

596 ----- Olympics -----
686 ["Haiti"] = {1904, 1908, 1912, 1920, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1980, begin_year=1900},

Please have a look at the quite new page Haiti at the 1936 Summer Olympics. To my understanding, there should be a link from the template {{infobox country at games|NOC = HAI}} to that text, even tough the haitian olympian didn't compete in the end. For comparison: in China at the 1952 Summer Olympics also no olympian did compete in the end, and because the chinese were late, they didn't even marched in the opening ceremony. But nevertheless they were at the Olympics, it's good that there's an article to document this, and it's good that there's a link from the template {{infobox country at games|NOC = CHN}} to that page. So should as well be the situation about "Haiti in 1936". Aidas (talk) 21:13, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

I would argue that it's a completely different situation; there was a Chinese athlete that competed in the '52 Olympics. However, there do seem to be indications in the various publications that Haiti was at least present. Not sure if it needs an entire article or just a one-line summary in the overview article but I have added it in. Primefac (talk) 09:54, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Several qualification events have been held, so about 30 countries have pages for the 2024 Summer Olympics now.

So I propose 2024 gets added to the Summer Olympics line, eg:

["Summer Olympics"] = { 1896, 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024

-- Lejman (talk) 13:23, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Generally speaking, we don't tend to add new dates until the year before the event, so I'm happy to add it in January. Primefac (talk) 09:23, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
