- Selleck is one of the few open conservatives in Hollywood. He is an outspoken member of the National Rifle Association, and in a well known incident he was verbally attacked by Rosie O'Donnell on her television show over his support of the NRA (before the show, she had promised not to bring up the subject, but says her temper got the best of her; also, this took place in the aftermath of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado). Selleck is a libertarian and is a registered Independent. He has appeared numerous times at fundraisers for the National Review, a conservative opinion magazine. Selleck has done advertisements for the NRA, and is occasionally rumored to become the president of the organization, following in the footsteps of fellow actor, Charlton Heston.

- Selleck was married to actress Jacquelyn Ray from 1970 to 1982. He adopted Ray's son from a previous marriage, Kevin. He married actress Jillie Mack on August 7, 1987, and they have one daughter, Hannah. Selleck, a graduate the University of Southern California a former member of the schools celebrated baseball squad, received an honorary doctorate from Pepperdine University. He was chosen because of his outstanding character and ethics. He is a board member of the non-profit Michael Josephson Institute of Ethics and co-founder of the Character Counts Coalition. He was chosen by People Magazine in 1998 as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. - - Selleck enlisted in the National Guard in 1966 and served in the infantry.

Mr. Selleck is a good man from what I read but none the less just a man.

Don’t get me wrong he is a talented actor, Magnum PI and all the movies he played in where great, but for some reason and maybe I’m just imaging it those shows did not define his life Mr. selleck went on to other activities in politics and charity that he seemed to think where important, The activates he took place in probably gratified him more then the movies he made. If I ever run into tom selleck I hope that I meet the person not the actor I can always go home and watch another movie.

IKE

Why was it "surprising" that he would portray General Eisenhower?

Probably because he usually plays action-hero types or has romantic roles. Ike is neither of those. Frecklefoot | Talk 18:31, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Selleck is Ruthenian

Tom Selleck's ancestors are from a region incorporated into Czechoslovakia from 1919 to 1938 by the Treaty of Trianon. This area, known as Ruthenia or Carpatho-Ukraine, had been fought over by Poland, Russia, and Austria-Hungary for centuries, was retaken by Hungary in 1938 until the Soviet invasion of 1944, then incorporated into the USSR and finally independent Ukraine. -- Citation? Sources for Trivia

Does anybody actually have any sources confirming that 1) His favourite actor is Steven Seagal, 2) He has a very large and impressive collection of Nazi memorabilia and 3) Has his own brand of aftershave called Tall Moustache for Men? --Thf1977 05:43, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

I call shenanigans on these... Removing. -- The Deviant 01:18, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Can anyone explain the discrepancy of the statement of "Selleck enlisted in the National Guard in 1966 and served in the infantry." and the trivia section entry of "Was a member of the California National Guard and was activated for the Watts riots."? If he enlisted in 1966, how could he have been involved in the Watts riots of 1965? I've seen other sources that he was involved in the riots, but nothing stating his enlistment date/year. If this can't be resolved, the "in 1966" should be removed. -- The Deviant 01:31, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

He's a conservative and a libertarian?

Could we have sources on these characterisations, please? I suppose one might infer from his NR involvement that he's somewhere on the libertarian end of the paleoconservative spectrum, but a self-description and/or reputable third-party source would be good. Alai 18:05, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

What is a "Hornby Eastwood 200"?

I tried to find out what this is but was unable to. Several Google and Yahoo searches were totally unsuccessful.

Closest match: www.Hornby.com, a manufacturer of model trains, but they do not have an "Eastwood" model. Even if they did I fail to comprehend the relevance of this.

Unless this is clarified I suggest removing this comment from the article.

Looks like a hoax to me.  VodkaJazz / talk  22:49, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Tom as a Boston Celtic

Recently, a friend tried convincing me that Tom Selleck was on the "reserve" team for the Boston Celtics prior to becoming an actor. Can someone put this rumor to rest?

Two Massive Pictures

We all agree that Mr. Baseball and Three Men and a Baby were both great films but can't we find two smaller and more appropriate pictures to add to Mr. Selleck's page? And they don't belong in his "personal life" section either.--Hypermagic 20:23, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

bad at moustache rides

Intro

"6'4", Selleck's dark hair, chiseled good looks, muscular and hairy-chested physique, sex appeal, iconic moustache, and good sense of humor make him popular for action, drama, and comedy parts; his Magnum role was a mix of all three."

Can we tone down the gushing on the intro a bit? MFNickster 19:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm removing that statement. It's highly POV and not encyclopedic. One Night In Hackney 20:14, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Abbotsford, BC reference

Even though it states that he "reportedly" lives here, it seems kind of unlikely. I didn't find anything in a database search or a quick Google search. Plus, he would have a harder time with his political work if he lived in Canada and Canada has tougher gun-control laws - not something most NRA members would submit to willingly. Tom Selleck's father is an ethnic Serb

His father is an ethnic Serb from Slovakia ... for some reason a link I am posting here from an impartial source is being blacklisted . Why is this ? This is well known in the serbian community . He is tall with dark hair which is a common trait of yugoslav people . Who is controlling this page and why is his true ethnicity not being shown ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sasha86 (talkcontribs) 01:34, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Apparently...

His father's family from Halychyna or Volyn, baptized in an Orthodox Church in Detroit. He insists that he is of Irish and Scotich descent and most certainly not a Slav. These information cannot be verified this momment but in the future... -- Imbris (talk) 01:15, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Is there a source where Selleck himself mentions any kind of Rusyn or Slovakian ancestry? As far as I can tell, he is entirely of Anglo descent - his father was Robert Dean Selleck, born in 1921 in Michigan to George Samuel Selleck and Nellie Louise Fife, both many-generation Americans (see family trees of his father at [1] and [2]). His mother was born Martha Jagger. "Selleck", spelt that way, is not a Slavic last name - I can only find people of Anglo origin with that name. That Selleck's father was Slovak was added to the article in 2006 by the now-banned user JJStroker (whose addition included a citation request for the fact he himself was adding) and seems to have spread from there to various websites. Tom's input may be of certain value but not of the exclusive value for this topic. I deeply object using any such proofs of whether something sounds like British, Scottish, Welsh, Briton, Irish surname. -- Imbris (talk) 00:13, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Magnum P.I. movie

"Selleck will not star in the upcoming Magnum P.I. film because he has been considered too old, but he may appear in a cameo role."

Where did this come from? There's no citation. Years ago I was watching an interview and he stated that he wouldn't be involved in any movie because the trend with old TV show remakes is just to make fun of the show. He was very proud of the fact that Magnum P.I. was the first thing to come out of Hollywood portraying Vietnam vets in a positive light and he had no interest in mocking that. I just wish I had something about that to cite so it could be included in the article. Wiki publius (talk) 14:23, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

More TV links possible?

I noticed that at least one of the TV movies (Crossfire Trail) had an article but not a link so I created it, and also removed Meet the Robinsons from the TV list (but only after linking it did I realize it was in the wrong list.) and I suspect some more TV work has articles. Anyone care to check for more? How about red-linking some of the more important ones? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.254.119.62 (talk) 03:59, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

I finally got around to going through and as of 7/25/2009 I think they are all linked, but more articles could easily be created later and as with all lists like this, if the creators don't do google searches for all instances of the content on wikipedia, the links might be missed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.254.82.208 (talk) 14:21, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Military Service

Was Tom Selleck 4F or did he just duck the draft? Kilowattradio (talk) 05:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Read the article - he served in the National Guard. His unit was activated in response to the Watts Riots. And now the question - were you 4F, or did you just duck the draft?

Wonderful man and Actor

Tom Selleck is a wonderful actor as well as a decent human being. My 41 year old late husband of 21 years was the spitting image of him. I am an active NRA advicate and when the "Rosie" situation hit my very lg family and I stopped shopping K-Mart due to fact she was spoke person for them, We still do not shop there. Their loss of millions literally. At the time we traveled well over 40 min away just not to shop kmart. Thankyou for years of entertainment, strong moral fiber and the resemblace of my late husband doesn't hurt either. I can project that he would age as well as u r , yet u r only a few years older than he.(^^^^) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.218.9.187 (talk) 22:46, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

There's no citation to confirm he owns a house in the Shetland Islands. It was added by a user who seems to enjoy page vandalism. Also I live in Shetland and feel like I would know if it were true.

But more importantly there's no citation

Utah horse ranch under threat from county, and sheriffs department of being put out of business based off from false accusations and legal charges

Utah horse ranching family is being harrassed by the Utah county sheriffs with numerous charges of livestock at large. There isn't any horses out when citations where issued. They are threatening to put ranch owner/opperator in prison for 900+ days and gather their horses, sell them and take away the families animal rights permanantly. Main picture -- Where's the moustache?!

This guy is famous for his thick and fantastic 'stache. To use a picture of a man without his trademark is completely backward, in my opinion. At least as his main picture please change it to one of the ones where his trademark is present, one of the earlier pictures of him at Cannes or on the red carpet at least. 76.174.26.88 (talk) 20:00, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Maybe Martha Jagger is of Rusyn ancestry?

Selleck was born in Detroit, Michigan to a Rusyn[1][2][3] father from Slovakia[4] Robert Selleck (died 2001) and Scottish American Martha Selleck. The family moved to Sherman Oaks when Tom was growing up. Tom's siblings include brother Robert (born 1944), brother Daniel (born 1950), and sister Martha. Selleck graduated from Grant High School, in 1962.[5]

Myra Brekenridge

Tom's minor role in the 1970 film, Myra Breckenridge, should be noted on Selleck's Filmography. In the film, he has sex with Mae West, for goodness' sake! It's a small role, but a memorable part of his early career. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.15.16.183 (talk) 13:27, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

To be or not to be (gay)

Why is the paragraph about the gay rumors in the Film section? Wouldn't it be more appropriate in the Personal Life section? MK2 8-10-11 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.67.52.120 (talk) 16:07, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Two sources called him gay; he denied it.
  • In the early 1990s, Selleck held a press conference to say that he was not gay after a Queer Nation poster allegedly tried to out him. He also sued a tabloid for printing a story that he was gay
What's a better way to word this? How about listing the sources first, followed by his response?
  • After a poster portrayed him as gay and a story appeared in a tabloid to the same effect, Selleck held ...
If that wording is not a problem, let's try something like that. --Uncle Ed (talk) 23:25, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
