Cleveland Plain Dealer Article[edit]

The Cleveland Plain Dealer today published an article pointing out a number of important errors in this article, some of which I've corrected. Thanks, when I get a chance I'll cite the article as a source where appropriate, unless someone beats me to it. Also there are some assertions in the "Abramoff" section of this article that should be easily cite-able by looking at court records online. I won't have a chance to look at it for at least 8 hours, though. BTW LaTourette is not my rep and I actually don't think much of him good or bad; I just can't stand to see someone smeared here. You MUST cite sources on this article[edit]

I have just removed an amazing amount of negative material about Mr. LaTourette that is unsourced. If I see it readded, I will lock the page until I see sources. I am doing this because of WP:BLP. I re-added some information about this public figure's sex scandal. While watching a news channel I noticed this congressman listed as a political figure in the Republican party who has had a sex scandal. This caught my eye because I had grown up in his district. I immediately assumed I could inform myself at my leisure regarding this scandal by reading his Wikipedia entry, as it is common practice on Wikipedia to refer to such scandals (e.g. linking the William Clinton article to the least substantiated, but heavily publicized, allegations of sexual impropriety). I was unpleasantly surprised when I found this was not the case. I have taken a few moments of idle time to correct this omission with as explicit a sourcing as possible. The links to free abstracts in the Plain Dealer online archive seems to degenerate so as not to display the abstracts after a few minutes (but keeping the headline and byline information, as well as links to for pay copies of the full text). The headline and byline information in the Wikipedia article should make the location of this PD article in the Lexus Nexus pay archive simple, however I made attempts to provide free sourcing for this Wikipedia article.
I'd like to add that I respect Rep. Latourette for his moderation. I wish to include this potentially negative information in his Wiki article in order to emphasize the irrelevance of such personal indiscretions to governing ability and integrity, both of which Rep. Latourette possess in spades, at least from my PoV.

Addition of constituent correspondence[edit]

User:Hallesister keeps adding verbatim text of constituent correspondence he/she claims to have received from Senator Brown. Similar edits are being made at Sherrod Brown. I have reverted these edits, warned the user on his talk page and proposed a compromise. These letters may have information that could be incorporated as prose, but they cannot be verified as authentic letters, and posting them verbatim does not follow the manual of style. This is my third revsion today, so I don't plan on reverting him again otherwise I will violate WP:3RR. I think the addition of this information constitutes vandalism, but I don't want to risk it. Either way, the user will be in violation of 3RR if he reverts me. Could other editors weigh in on this please, or am I off base here?DCmacnut<> 17:12, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable utterances in article[edit]

This is a non-notable event where Rep. LaTourette called a constituent question "bullshit." It's received coverage only on a Huffington Post blog, and the only source is a video of the event. I've removed it because it is a non-notable utterance that is poorly sourced and has not been covered by other reliable sources. He's not the only congressman who has sworn in public. Dick Cheney even went so far as to tell Senator Patrick Leahy to F-off (on the Senate floor no less) and Bush once called a NY Times reporter a "major league asshole." Both events had fleeting coverage of the moment, but neither are included in those individuals articles.

WP:BLP requires more than "so and so said this" as the standard for inclusion in the article. I do not want to get into an edit with the IP editor who seems insistent on including this (even going so far to call my reversion vandalism, when BLP clearly says otherwise). This is a close call, but the proposed language is wrong. The question was asked by what appears to be a journalist after the town hall. The proposed language says the question was asked during a town hall, which more than implies that he called a question from the audience a bullshit question. The other issue is whether the video is a good source. The editing is problematic, but the key portion is unedited. What is perhaps more important is the question whether it is invalid as a primary source. The primary/secondary issue for Wikipedia purposes is not one I've really spent much time on, so someone else should weigh in on that. -Rrius (talk) 03:17, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think these kind of things could be included if, as you say, they are worded properly and reflect what actually happened. My chief concern, other than BLP issues, is that wikipedia is not news. With so many townhalls in August over health care and so many amateur videos of events that people are already starting to post any fleeting utterance made by congressman in response to protesters, etc. Some events are getting wider mainstream coverage, like Claire McCaskill, Arlen Specter, and Chuck Grassley. I just think we want to avoid posting these things if the only source is a video, YouTube or otherwise.DCmacnut<> 13:11, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life[edit]

The entire section was sourced to 404-not-found pages on two different websites. Additionally, even assuming the sources can be relocated, I am concerned about WP:UNDUE in the way some of this was reported.

First, we made reference in the section to his voting to impeach Bill Clinton, and then go on to discuss - as if it is immediately relevant - some questions about whether he was having affair (with the woman he subsequently married) before his divorce. This strongly suggests an inappropriate political motivation for including this material, i.e. a suggestion that he was somehow being phony or insincere with his vote. I shouldn't have to say this, but that line of reasoning in no way makes any sense.

Second, even without that political jab, it is unclear that there was ever a sufficient "scandal" to warrant mentioning here. I am not saying that there wasn't - I don't actually know. In order to establish that it matters, we need more than just tabloid tittle-tattle, we need to see reliable third party sourcing that suggests it had some basis in fact, some impact on his career, and so on.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 11:43, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would be relevant if there were some statement in the record on his part expressing disgust or condemnation of Clinton for his marital infidelity, I think, or if he had taken some leading role in the impeachment (cf. here, although with the caveat that the subject of that article has been deceased for several years) Most members of Congress who voted for impeachment, when asked to justify it, played it safe on that score and cited the perjury charge, I recall. I followed List of federal political sex scandals in the United States to this person, and to my surprise there is nothing here. Improper Label[edit]
