This list of wineries can never be complete - should the page just be removed? Perhaps best to reference some outside sources (www.wineontheweb.com or Wine-Searcher).

What's with all the spam to the wine competition pages. Shouldn't a list be just a list? Are the wine competition links so important that they belong next to the names of each estate on the list? There are numerous facts that would be more significant to add along side the list if this is to be anything other than an index of links to wine estates on wikipedia. - Mikecase00 2006-05-22

What's the point of this page? If it's non-exhaustive, then on what basis are some names here and others not; and it it were to be completed (however unlikely that is) it would be of inordinate length and hardly illuminating. Plus there are errors in it, even at the small size it is now - eg Meursault Charmes Roulot is neither a vineyard nor a winery, but rather a wine made by a producer (whose name is Roulot), from a vineyard (whose names is Charmes). I'd recommend it just gets deleted, but don't know wikipedia procedure for sorting that out --Nickhh 19:24, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This list is utterly pointless and useless, and should be trashed asap. As the very least, such a list should be sorted by types of wine and geographic region. But because such a list is merely the tip of a huge iceberg, and notoriously outdated, I think that categories will always do a better job. --Tetris L (talk) 12:02, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Improve, dont delete. I removed the prod. I agree it nee3ds major improvement. So why not fix the ones you know? DGG (talk) 16:33, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This page may possibly be up for Deletion see: WP:AfD consider also Wikipedia guideline pages - WP:LIST and WP:NOTDIR[edit]

otherwise unless someone can copy the wikicode into Excel, use the "Data | Text to Columns..." feature to split it on the comma, then use the "Data | Sort" feature to group it by state. That would get 99% cleaned up but not 100% sure its worthwhile as there is literally thousands of wineries. SpringSummerAutumn (talk 1 August 2009

I can tell you right now that all of the redlinks can be wiped without consequence... it appears someone went through and blindly added a link to every winery in Australia... The ones with their own articles are OK for the moment, but I am going to remove all the redlinks right now... should help to start cleanup on the list... Tables would be great, but we also need references for each (like on List of wineries and vineyards in Maine)... - Adolphus79 (talk) 19:12, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Latest AfD nomination[edit]

The latest AfD nomination/voting can be found at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of vineyards and wineries (2nd nomination). At that time it was not tagged for WP:WINE. Tomas e (talk) 12:49, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

salvage operation[edit]

I think the existence of the is article is absurd, but looking the AfD records, it's here to stay. And looking at the edit history, it seems to have been mothballed. So, what would we want from a list of wineries? If we want to simply find a winery, we would go to the categories for help. If we look at other lists on Wikipedia, they give useful information such as years, specific locations, associated personalities.

Varietals – If I were looking at a list of wineries, most likely I'd want to filter for varietals and styles. But, since business needs, budgets, marketing schemes, and market trends are as stable as a man after a bottle of claret, maintaining a varietals column would be unreasonable.
Region, appellation, etc. – The list currently lists the Australian regions, but that's about it. Cloudy Bay does not list Marborough. One issue is listings such as Concha y Toro. The company spans several regions of Chile, which creates problems if we want to make the list sortable. My personal philosophy is that a large table with several columns is useless without the option to sort.
Year established – Useful if you want to find the oldest or newest, or if you want to get a picture of the timeline of openings in a region.

What are some other suggestions? Oh, and what criteria do we want? The intro if paltry at best. Is it just the list of wineries and vineyards on Wikipedia? How do we decide what goes in? Notability? What is that? Notability may not be synonymous with quality or rankings. This very well could be a list that puts Little Penguin next to Petrus. Cheers!
