Surname[edit]

Is "de la Rey" a semi-French translation of van Rooyen?

I'm not a linguist but I don't think there is a link here. De La Rey is definately of French origin, but van Rooyen would be from Dutch origin. I would also presume that 'Rey' would refer to a king, relating to the Latin word 'Rex'. Seeing as the surnames stem from different countries, one cannot assume the one is a translation of the other. "Rey" means King in Spanish.

  • Both of you are wrong. De La Rey is a Spanish surname. The spanish occupied Holland in early years. He was obviously of Spanish background.

Spanish or Portuguese surnames in the Netherlands are generally Separdic Jewish, as in Spinoza and Fonseca. 'De la Rey', according to all evidence is most likely French (note the French town of Larrey in Burgundy).Sanningar.

Pop Culture - Julio Garcia[edit]

"The song is so well-known that it has been the subject of a parody by radio personality Julio Garcia portraying General De La Rey as gay." Citation please. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 169.202.5.104 (talk) 14:03, 3 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I'm inclined to agree with this. It really does need a citation. -Kieran 14:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Is it not worthwhile adding that following this Jalio Garcio apologized on the air for the insensitivity of this action? Graeme.lockley 18:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Links to song[edit]

I've removed the inline link to www.majorityrights.com. The link pointed to an opinion piece on the song's political content, hosted on a website with strong, racially charged political content, and I don't think is the right link as an authoritative reference for the song itself. (Apart from this, inline links to external sites are, if I'm not mistaken, to be avoided in Wikipedia articles). Instead, in the external links section, I've put links to the music video on YouTube (the English subtitled version), and to Bok van Blerk's MySpace. -Kieran 14:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To quote "...hosted on a website with strong, racially charged political content..." So you admit to politically motivated censorship. Is it a crime to be pro-White?! Would censor links to an ANC site in an article on Nelson Mandela? By the way what was the link to the article (41.241.155.227 14:57, 6 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Nationalism vs. Uitlander policies[edit]

I feel that the statement "He is generally regarded ... as one of the leading figures of Afrikaner nationalism" needs a citation as well. Basically I'm wondering how one can be wholly opposed to the uitlander policies and yet be regarded a figure of Afrikaner nationalism. Seems like a contradiction and if it is "true" (i.e. in reputable sources) then I think the contradiction should be dealt with in the text (if possible, and if sources mentioning it exist). --The Extremist [User, Talk] 20:11, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Books[edit]

I note that there are no citations of books on this person. There is the biography by Johannes Meintjes DE LA REY. LION OF THE WEST which is possibly the only full biography in English. Should this not be added?--198.54.202.94 (talk) 18:18, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Peace[edit]

I have tried to insert at the end of this section a reference to the English translation of the book, but have not done it correctly. Please help by correcting it. Apologies for my ignorance of proper procedure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dawright12 (talkcontribs) 09:45, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Allegiance - Union of South Africa / What warrants Allegiance to the "Union of South Africa"? --41.151.75.23 (talk) 17:09, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, especially with the anachronistic flag shown representing it rather than the red ensign. LairdKeir (talk) 19:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC) LairdKeir[reply]
