Requested move 8 June 2021[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Moved to the alternatively proposed title. While there was one support to make this politician as the primary topic of Edward Hardy, there was not enough evidence to validate this, with other editors agreeing that the politician (Edward Arthur Hardy) is not the primary topic and should instead be moved to the alternatively proposed title of Edward Hardy (politician) with Edward Hardy remaining as the disambiguation page. As such, the originally requested moves were note done, but the instead move was made: Edward Arthur HardyEdward Hardy (politician). – Revert undiscussed move. There is no evidence that anyone other than this politician is the primary topic for the basic name "Edward Hardy". In a recent group of edits a SPA editor set the composer Edward W. Hardy to be the primary topic, by moving this page to a little-used full name and converting Edward Hardy to a redirect to EWH, but there is no evidence that the non-W version of the name is ever used to refer to him. Note: Edward Hardy titles a page with significant content and so is ineligible as a target "new" page title unless it is also proposed to be renamed. This request has been altered to reflect that fact. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 09:39, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Apologies. A request was recently made at WP:RMT by Lennart97 to move Edward Hardy (disambiguation)Edward Hardy, but there was not a notice that this discussion was in progress, so I had moved the page without knowing of this discussion. If a consensus is made that this article should instead be Edward Hardy and the disambiguation should be moved back to Edward Hardy (disambiguation), I will make the necessary moves. --JDC808 14:51, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • As JDC808 states above, another editor separately requested that Edward Hardy (disambiguation)Edward Hardy at WP:RM, innocent of this discussion, which has now been carried out. On further reflection I think this is probably the best solution to avoid things getting even messier (unless I am wrong, I think the page "Edward Hardy" has been moved three times in the last 24 hours now). So I oppose the original proposal but support Roman Spinner's proposal. This means the second part of his proposal has already been carried out... regarding the renaming of this page, I believe it should be at Edward Hardy (politician) – the SPA editor added the middle name in order to free up "Edward Hardy" as the redirect to their preferred target article, but I don't see any evidence that the politician included his middle name as WP:COMMONNAME... it's quite normal that a headstone will have the full name of a person, but Hansard, the official proceedings of the UK Parliament, lists him as Edward Hardy [1], and The Times obituary referenced in the article also uses this name without "Arthur", so it would appear that Edward Hardy was his common name. • Sorry, I indeed filed the RMT not knowing of this RM and certainly didn't mean to interfere with it. For what it's worth, it does seem to me that there's no clear primary topic as noted by Roman Spinner and Richard. Lennart97 (talk) 15:07, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't attach any blame to you Lennart97, you were unaware of the situation and this discussion... if the SPA hadn't acted unilaterally we wouldn't have this mess. Richard3120 (talk) 17:39, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • information Administrator note As alluded to in the nom, the current Edward Arthur Hardy was previously at Edward Hardy before its undiscussed move.[2] As such, even a "no consensus" here should revert Edward Arthur Hardy back to its longstanding title of Edward Hardy.—Bagumba (talk) 15:14, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Appears to be the primary topic. If not, then Edward Hardy (politician) should be used, as he appears to commonly be referred to only by his first name. Full names often appear on headstones and in formal announcements. That does not make them the common name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:41, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose proposal, support Roman Spinner's alternative. There is no evidence that Hardy is the primary topic. In fact, there is no primary topic of "Edward Hardy" in reliable sources. In my Google books and Google scholar searches I did not turn up any mention of the politician. [3][4] (t · c) buidhe 10:40, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • As nominator... I'm happy to see the politician at Edward Hardy (politician), the musician at Edward W. Hardy, and the dab page at Edward Hardy. There may or may not be a primary topic, but it certainly isn't the musician, to promote whom this whole muddle of page moves was set off by the WP:SPA Guarneri Fan.
