Sephardi Jews[edit]

There are no Sephardi Surnames as Spinoza, Derrida, etc — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.106.32.142 (talk) 03:34, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup[edit]

As I see, nothing was done in response to criticism in AfD and DRV. I have an impression that someone run a bot on all German surnames and put them into Jewish surnames category. Therefore I am going to undertake a major cleanup and remove this category from all pages which seem implausible to me, unless they

  • have an adequate reference
  • have traces of Y/H languages influence
  • I have personal knowledge or reason to believe they are indeed Jewish.

I am well aware that when Jews were Baptized, they were given names in the corresponding gentile languages. Threfore a large number of Jewish surnames of "non-Jewish sound" are well-attested. In particular, quite a few of them are listed in the article Jewish surnames. I will leave the latter be as well. -

Once again, as it was said in DRV, the fact that you know a Jew with surname Smith is insufficient to put "Smith" into this category. Altenmann >t 00:29, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see some variations of Schwartz, but no Schwartz itself. I am 100% jewish, and that is my last name. I cant figure out hwo to add it though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.2.143.28 (talk) 17:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Altenmann above. Before any names are added into this cat there should be a good reference that say the name is considered to be "Jewish", or is known to be borne by Jewish families, something like that. Think about it, you're just one person, these articles are about surnames borne by countless families. Just because someone from China has the surname Schwartz doesn't mean that anyone considers it to be a Chinese surname. Funnily enough, both Badagnani (talk · contribs) and Altenmann (talk · contribs) are banned.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 10:20, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
