Naming biographical articles
I recently created Adele Briscoe Looscan. I created this from her first name, maiden name, married name. This was easy because this is the name she used for her by-line in articles. Bearing in mind WP:MoS#Article titles, any suggestions for a default format? Should I rename this? I have another article which I will release today or tomorrow, so any comments would be appreciated. thanks, Oldsanfelipe (talk) 17:04, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- The format to use is the most commonly used form, but is set out in a lot of detail at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). The form she used in her bylines seems the best choice here. But then we should provide redirects from every other form which is mentioned in the article, or used in any of the sources, or otherwise seems likely. I've added a clutch of redirects to this one. Sometimes, though not this time, creating redirects like that finds a handful of redlinks to turn blue, as when someone is listed in a list of prizewinners under the fullest form of their name. Help with updates for Wednesday Martin
Hi all! I'm wondering if any editors from this WikiProject would be interested to help with a request for author Wednesday Martin, seeking to update the Works section for her article. She is best known for her book Primates of Park Avenue and has published some newer works that have not yet been added to the article. My proposed updates include adding a full list of works and a short mention of her new book.

- I just did a google search and the first 10 pages revealed sources including American Academy of Underwater Sciences, Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme, California Polytechnic State University, DAN, DEMA, NAUI, PADI, Phycological Society of America, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University and TDI/SDI. Most of these sources did have articles on WP. Also, the search results included a number of publications such as Dive Mag, Diver Training, Sport Diver and X-Ray. Therefore, I believe the coverage is good (and better than a lot of articles under the auspices of WikiProject Underwater diving). Regards Cowdy001 (talk) 07:38, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Women in Green - 2019 Goals
As a quick update for the new year: in 2018, Women in Green participants submitted a collective total of 27 new GA article nominations about women. For 2019, group members have agreed on two separate goals: (1) submit a collective total of 20 GA article nominations about women and women's works related to suffrage, and (2) submit a collective total of 20 "Wildcard" GA article nominations about women and women's works of any kind. All interested editors are welcome to contribute to these goals and Women in Green as a whole (there is a participant list on the project mainpage!), and the Talk page is open for questions and discussions about the GA nomination/review process. Notable female sociologists lacking a Wikipedia article
While investigating an article for Dr. Susan Myra Kingsbury, I chanced upon the following paper:
- Luo, Wei; Adams, Julia; Brueckner, Hannah (2018). "The Ladies Vanish?". Comparative Sociology. 17 (5): 519–556. doi:10.1163/15691330-12341471.

Draft article for Kathy J. Warden
Hi there! I work for Northrop Grumman, and as part of my work to improve a few Wikipedia articles related to the company, I've drafted a new article about Northrop Grumman's current president and COO, Kathy J. Warden, who will begin her tenure as CEO on January 1, 2019. Here's a link to the draft article --- User:JanAtNorthropGrumman/Kathy J. Warden. I believe she meets Wikipedia's eligibility criteria and I've tried to be neutral and objective here.
The draft summarizes her educational background, career, board service and recognition based on reputable sources. Could someone from this WikiProject take a look at this and assess it for WP:N? I'm not really finding anything which shows Wong meets WP:BIO of even WP:ATHLETE, but fitness competitors, etc. might not receive the same kind of coverage in more traditional media sources that some other types of athletes often do. #WIKI4WOMEN March 8 2019 UNESCO initiative
Hello, WikiProject Women. I just found out about the #WIKI4WOMEN initiative by UNESCO for International Women's Day, 8 March 2019. I'm not affiliated with the initiative - I used to work for the UN and still try to keep an eye on their virtual volunteering-related initiatives. UNESCO is recruiting volunteers around the globe "to take a few minutes of their time to create, enrich or translate, in as many languages as possible, Wikipedia profiles of women committed in the fields of education, science, culture, social and human sciences, or communication and information." The official UNESCO page for the campaign is REALLY lacking in guidance for participants - I think members of the WikiProject Women project could help oh-so-much. In fact, when I posted about the campaign on the TechSoup forum, I linked to your excellent material as guidance. Hope your leadership can reach out and help make this campaign even better. I've already asked about this article at WT:JAPAN#Françoise Moréchand, but I figured I'd ask about it here as well as. My guess is that Moréchand is most likely Wikipedia notable per WP:BIO and WP:NEXIST, but that article is general is not very good shape. Much of this is due to a recent spurt of editing by a well-meaning but new editor who most likely is not very familiar with MOS:MOS, etc. So, I'm wondering if anyone from WP:WOMEN would like to help with the clean up. There are formatting and layout issues which probably be adddressed fairly easily, but weeding out the unsourced and POV content per WP:BLP and WP:NPOV, etc. probably requires a little more thought. The article isn't listed under the scope of WP:WOMEN, but I'm pretty sure that it should be which is why I'm asking about it here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:43, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

WP:WOMEN or WP:WOMSCI?
I am really confused on the best practices for assessing articles about women. I have started working on the WOMSCI unassessed backlog and I have found some articles which are already added to WP:WOMEN. My gut says to always add to the more specific project, and I have never added WP:WOMEN when I knew of a more specific project (which would also include art, writers, etc). What should I be doing? Greetings! I've suggested at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wikipedia Awards that there should be a topic-specific barnstar for editors who have done great work in reducing systemic bias on Wikipedia specifically by increasing the number and visibility of articles about women and women's topics. I realise there is a barnstar for the Women In Red project, but my suggestion is for a broader-based award which also recognises those who have expanded existing articles. My design, at present, looks something like this, but I would definitely welcome input at the above talk page from people on this project. Should redirects from Women in Foo country to Women rights in Foo country be deleted?
Looking at Women in Asia template (not transcludable, click and expand it here: Women_in_South_Korea#External_links) I see a number of redirects like Women's rights in Afghanistan redirected from Women in Afghanistan (I recommend the gadget that colors redirects as green). Are those redirects helpful or not? Being a fan of WP:RED, I'd rather delete them to people are more likely to consider proper overviews like Women in the United States. - Piotrus from a writer's standpoint, (I love that gadget) I can see that you would use women in Foo or Foo women far more often that Women's rights in Foo. For example, comparing the rights of women in Foo to those of women in Woo... - Piotrus and SusunW: I think we should view this first and foremost from the point of view of outside users wanting information about women in Afghanistan, etc. As there is not yet an article titled Women in Afghanistan in English, it seems to me a good idea to have a redirect. One of these days, I hope someone will create an article specifically on the more general Women in Afghanistan. There's already quite a richly-sourced article in Portuguese: Mulheres no Afeganistão which could serve as a basis. Suggestion
I'll plonk this here, and the reactions will tell me if I am in the right place. Six female RAF members were awarded the Military Medal during world war two. The MM was awarded to non commissioned service people for "acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire." In other words -- bravery. Quite a meritorious achievement, but see nothing about them on Wiki. Is there anyone interested in writing articles about them? - hi Moriori, this sounds great, i don't want to put a dampener on this, but (here we go coola!:), whomever takes this on board will need lots of strong (ie. indepth) references, including ones that probably discuss them outside of this amazing achievement, as there will be issues around whether this medal is a high enough honour to meet wikinotability requirements. i see at the wikiarticle on this medal that there have been almost 140th awarded, and at medal ranks that it is a 3rd level medal so does not meet WP:MILPERSON (that requires top level or multiple 2nd levels), it could be argued that as only a few hundred recipients were women that it is wikisignificant (of course if any also received bars reckon they should be okay), anyway hope everything goes well with this. Congrats! Today I went to look up a woman I read an article about and I went to wikipedia to read more. Linkage+Findability

Following up on Twitter conversations, I'd like to suggest something unique: making one of our events focus on Linkage+Findability. This event would encourage Women in Red enthusiasts to add (a) categories, (b) wikilinks, (c) external links to existing articles within the scope of our project, and/or (d) wikilink a woman's biography to another page(s). - @Rosiestep: I love this idea a lot!! I think it works in the scope of the whole WikiProject Women. If we did this, we could really try to incorporate the other daughter projects. - Agree with what SusunW said. Note, if consensus feels that including a Linkage+Findability event is one too many for August, we could consider moving it to December and making it an "Annual" event. - I like Linkage+Findability as an on-going event like 1day1woman or suffrage. It clearly addresses a gap in incorporating women's articles in the encyclopedia. Maybe we announce it as a new continuous initiative aimed with that goal in mind? SusunW (talk) 15:32, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

- Could we include two more aspects of "findability"?
- (a) Making redirects from plausible other names - eg with/without middle name, use of married/birth surname, any form seen in any of the sources used. And then doing "what links here" in case there's then any cleanup needed, eg if your 19th century poet shares a name with a redlinked 21st century tennis player once you remove her middle name!
- (b) Adding her to the surname article/list, or dab page, or making a redirect or hatnote ... One way or another making her findable by surname. Some editors would say we need to do the same for forenames but I can't feel much enthusiasm for that: is a reader really likely to look for a woman by her given name alone, unless she's a saint, goddess, or mononymic musician? Whereas writers, academics, etc are often referred to by surname ("the early work of Bloggs and Whatsit in the field ... Thingummys theory of ..., etc).
- I don't know how we could easily quantify this work, nor avoid duplication of effort by sharing it around. PamD 20:47, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
