Oil shale in Estonia
I am currently working on Oil shale in Estonia to bring it to GA and later FA level. As there is still a lot of work before any nomination, all comments and assistance would be useful. Although there are already several images, additional images for this or other related articles would be useful. Namely:
- Any historical image of oil shale mining/ oil shale industry in Estonia, particularly from the first half of the last century.
- Image of the Kiviter retort (could be used also for Kiviter process and Viru Keemia Grupp articles)
- Image of the Narva oil plant (could be used also for Galoter process and Narva Oil Plant articles)
- Image of the Petroter oil plant (could be used also for Galoter process and Viru Keemia Grupp articles)
- Image of the Narva open-cast mine.
- Any image of an underground oil shale mine
- Image of the Kohtla-Järve power plant (could be used also for Kohtla-Järve Power Plant)
- Image of the Ahtme power plant (could be used also for Ahtme Power Plant)
- Image of an alkaline water lake at the Narva ashfield.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. I wasn't sure where to ask about this, so if this is the wrong forum please point me towards someone who might be able to help. The article Ljubov Rebane contains what looks like a botched translation job from Russian (unless the title "High-spectral-resolution spectroscopy and for the persistent spectral hole-burning of molecules and solids" is somehow really a paragraph long when rendered in Russian). I see that there is a corresponding article on the Estonian Wikipedia which doesn't look to be similarly mangled, so if there's anyone who can read that that might also help. Advice needed
As per Wikipedia article, Estonia is not signatory of European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages? On the other hand, it seems like there is great percentage of population that actually use languages other than Estonian (especially Russian language). I need your advice how to use languages other than Estonian in geographical articles. Where should I add minority languages in lead section and where in lead and infobox? For example I added Russian in lead in article Ida-Viru County on the east of the country, but maybe I should add it also in infobox since article states that local Russian population constitute 72.8% of population. Also, is there other languages that should be added in articles (maybe Latvian, Swedish, Finnish...?). Have a nice day.--MirkoS18 (talk) 17:08, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Help with a featured article candidate
I recently put up the article of Konstantin Päts as a featured article candidate, which could be the very first featured article related directly to Estonia. There is a problem with the images as Wikipedia's image copyright demands are quite harsh and I have no experience with that. - Uhm, that article is truly bizarre. What exactly does the author mean that "Baltic Estonia" denotes? There is nothing in there that isn't either covered in "Estonia" or in the "Baltic states" or "Baltic region" or "Baltic langauges". One wouldn't write an article called "Scandinavian Sweden" or "European Germany" or "African Congo". I think it should be put up for deletion since it doesn't refer to anything in particular. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.

Absurdly small categories for people from parishes
Hi, just a vote of protest that people from Estonia categories now go right down to tiny parishes. I consider this absurd. All the small categories should be deleted and merged to more sensibly-sized units; most countries stop at towns or counties. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:38, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

discussion about articles for deletion - Estonian military terms
Please see discussion on articles for deletion. These are all foreign words for Estonian military terms. The content should perhaps be consolidated into an article on the Estonian military, but as these are foreign words (and not loan words used in English) they don't belong as article titles in the English Wikipedia. Changing birthplaces to Soviet Union
124.49.87.16 (talk · contribs) has recently started to change birthplaces to Soviet Union. Reason for this is explained to be a consensus on WP:HOCKEY. Even though most or even all sources (international sites like nhl.com, eliteprospects.com, hockeydb.com) in a specific article say Estonia (besides the facts we should know pretty well). After some digging I found Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Ice_Hockey/Archive55#Baltic_states_dispute in which somekind of voting happened that some involved editors tried to count as consensus, does not actually look like a consensus to me. - It's called a compromise. We at WP:HOCKEY use 'Soviet Union' in the ice hockey articles 'only'. I'm certain, folks here at WP:ESTONIA, or at WP:LATVIA and WP:LITHUANIA, wouldn't want us to go around adding 'Soviet Union' to all Baltic sports bios or all Baltic bios in general. I have been looking for a policy or consensus to see when -not- to use the in-place state in birthplaces. I don't think there is one, not even in this project. I know that the Baltic states' occupation was not recognized diplomatically by many countries. However, their passports until 1990 would have been Soviet-issued ones, no? They would have been born in cities and towns defined by the in-place authorities? The in-place authorities would have kept the birth records, the driver's licenses, the health information, the passports, police records, everything. The Republic I am certain did not delete those records just because the SSR was in place. I don't think they suddenly freed murderers, etc. If a city or town's name was changed since a person was born, would we still not list their birthplace as the old name? I would think the same would apply to the states, etc. The other issues would be borders. If someone was born in a place that became part of some other country, would we not still list their birthplace under the old boundaries and states? Athletes would have represented the Soviet Union in international competition, not some country in-exile? As for using what web sites list, the question becomes more like does that site become less reliable as a source? They are not authoritative, when it is indisputable that the Soviet Union imposed the SSR during that period. I think that Wikipedia tries to be a neutral place. Using Republic of Estonia in the place of what was in place at the time is not neutral. It is a 'polite fiction' at best. It is not writing to a standard for historical accuracy. That should matter. Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Redirect-class
@ExRat and Pelmeen10: and others We don't have "redirect-class". Many WikiProjects have it (see Category:Redirect-Class articles). We probably should be use it. And it can be changed probably via User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/Estonia--Estopedist1 (talk) 19:02, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Estonia as part of the USSR in infoboxes etc.
Can someone explain to me the Wikipedia logic behind using the Kremlin POV in writing "Estonian SSR" in infoboxes of people born during the Soviet occupation? It is a widely recognized fact of international law that the Soviet rule in Estonia was against international law and therefore legally null and void. It is basically the legal successor of the USSR - Russia - that alone argues for the contrary. What next, do we allow literal Nazis to rewrite articles about WW2 and victims of the Holocaust? Also, why can some totally random sports-related Wikiproject make up its own rules on such an issue that should have a uniform standard all over Wikipedia? That standard should be based on facts of history and international law, not on simplistic Kremlin propaganda or what is written in ice hockey databases... - Austet H2ppyme, Klõps and all honourable wikipedians, make no mistake, during Putin's rule the Russian gov't and intel agencies have been putting great many technical and human resources into propaganda and modern "hybrid warfare", including aggressive disinformation campaigns on social media. What you may have noticed here is just the tip of the iceberg, not only an odd Wikipedia editor or two with a pro-Kremlin-Stalin-USSR-etc-trolling hobby, but a whole network of hundreds of editor and admin accounts, in concerted action and manned 24-7-365 by professional staff. For these operatives, inserting "SSR" somewhere, deleting "Estonia" in another article, or reverting another edit somewhere else once every 2-3 minutes is nothing but routine paid work (with getting an honest anti-Soviet editor blocked or banned sometimes as an additional bonus). - @Soman:, this really is not comparable. Estonia was a universally recognized sovereign state - recognized also by Soviet Russia and the later Soviet Union. It was a member of the League of Nations. Estonia remained a de jure sovereign state throughout the Soviet occupation with its foreign legations recognized by most countries that had been independent at the beginning of the Soviet occupation. Later on, Estonia restored its independence and it didn't found a new state. Literally the only relevant source still claiming that the Soviet rule in Estonia was legitimate is the legal successor of the invader - Russia. It really is like having literal Nazis as somehow relevant sources for claiming that the very existence of the Holocaust is contested... H2ppyme (talk) 18:48, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- Legal or illegal isn't important here. How some persons birth death place is named isn't gonna change the history. There are just people who are pushing their political agenda in biography articles. For the modern states the full political names of the countries mostly aren't used. e.g president of china Xi infobox has born Beijing, China, not born Beijing, People's Republic of China. France, Belgium, Denmark etc during German occupation are just writtten Paris, France not Paris, German Military Administration etc. Estonia was Estonia. Should we then change all the people born in free Estonia from Estonia to Republic of Estonia? People born few years or even a day before the end of the occupation don't even have anything do to with soviet union. So why to clutter article with this. If it's noteworthy that these people were born in Soviet Union, then it will be written in prose in the article. Looked into this, and these are again the same users. They have done it before, exactly like this, randomly taking a number of articles and changing Estonia to Estonian SSR. I've spent hours trying to get any logical arguments from them. Nothing. Same old, but the name was this. Strangely they don't have problems with Paris 1940-1944 being written just Paris, France, not Paris, German Military Administration in Belgium and Northern France. They won't fight for Oslo 1940-1945 to be marked as Oslo, Reichskommissariat Norwegen. They aren't even interested changing Estonia 1941–1944 to Reichskommissariat Ostland. They are very specifically only for Baltic states to use Soviet names. I think they are rather some western wannabe communists soviet fanboys, not real Russian trolls, but the the timing of another this kind of massediting, with the events going on in Ukraine is rather telling. -Klõps (talk) 20:40, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

- About the community – the edit consensus for years has been to use just Estonia. There's a lot of naive communists and just Soviet fanboys out there, in the west and in Russia. I wouldn't say that they're Russian trolls. Just Estonian community here is quite small, so a lot of vandalizing in Estonian related articles goes unnoticed. I've fixed so much nonsense. In this theme I have fixed a lot of articles where people born in Estonia 1918–1940 have been changed to be born in Soviet Union, where Estonian names have been changed to Russian transliteration (Tynu instead of Tõnu), someone once replaced Estonian to Soviet (Estonian author to Soviet author) and it was many years like this until I noticed, went back to this users edits and changed them back.--Klõps (talk) 21:30, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
Again, arguments about de jure stuff are irrelevant, since Wikipedia isn't a court. As for the comparison with German occupations of WWII, there are slight discrepancies. Germany never annexed Paris. Paris was still located in France throughout the war, even from a German POV. But in areas annexed by Germany, the situation would be different. See for example Yuriy-Yosyp Shulyatytskyi, born in Distrikt Galizien. A person born in Prague during the war would have been born in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, as is the case with Václav Klaus. And so forth. We shouldn't bother about the legalities of government, the factoid that is of interest is to show readers in which settings the article subjected were born in, living in and died in. A hockey player born in the Estonian SSR in the 1970s would have gotten a Soviet birth certificate, attended Soviet schools, most likely had the beginning of his sports career in Soviet clubs, held Soviet citizenship and so forth. Being born in the Soviet Union would have a key biographical detail. The historical revisionism that seeks to pretend the Estonian SSR never existed is a type of nationalist pov-pushing that does help us in building an encyclopedia. --Soman (talk) 01:37, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- Ok, You go by de facto but then you contradict yourself by saying that de facto only matters when it's de jure annexation. Annexation is just a legal technicality, it does not change the fact that these countries were under foreign occupation. France was France, Estonia was Estonia. No need for political additions. Do you also want to change 1918-1940, 1990/91-present to Republic of Estonia instead of just Estonia? You say that you don't want to bother with legalities and then go on rambling about legalities of the need for exact political state naming.
- No one is saying Estonian SSR never existed, insulting isn't a way to prove your point. One can also say that it is historical revisionism to deny that Republic of Estonia continued to exist while the territory was under the Soviet occupation. It was illegal occupation not recognized by international community. Estonia was Estonia. There's no need for political POW pushing of the exact political name. Infobox person says to omit unnecessary or redundant details. It is totally redundant to have full political state name.
- The hockey player example is irrelevant here and wrong. This all is irrelevant, because just like that people born in France, Denmark, Norway under the German occupation also would have had documents issued by the occupying power, but I must clear facts. First there weren't Soviet birth certificates, each republic had it's own. Person born in Estonia got Eesti NSV sünnitunnistus. And even this does not matter because it was issued by the illegal occupying power. If the person went to an Estonian embassy somewhere, they would have been able to get their Estonian passport. They would have attended Estonian SSR schools curated by the Estonian SSR Ministry of education. They would have been playing in Estonian clubs in Estonian league again curated by Estonian SSR Ice Hockey Federation, if the club had high enough level they might have also contested over the Soviet Union league with the best clubs of each republic. But as said that's all irrelevant, people went to schools and played sports also under the German occupation in France and other countries but it's still Paris, France 1940, not Paris, German Military Administration in Belgium and Northern France, because they had schools. --Klõps (talk) 09:26, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- Estonian passports contain "Estonia" rather than "Estonian SSR". The same with Lithuania and Latvia. The same is written in the documents issued by the EU, UK, USA and probably many other countries. These can be considered WP:PRIMARY and WP:COMMONNAME applies. Good luck convincing ~6 million population that they were born somewhere else.
- Also, a hockey player born in late 1980s would have had a Soviet birth certificate, yet they would have grown up in independent Estonia, having no distinct memory of the Soviet regime. Similarly, a lot of people born in the Interwar period would have grown up in independent Estonia, but would later be forced to become Soviet citizens and live under oppression. The memories and experiences are not bound by the formal dates.

- Try to apply this logic to other settings. An analogous example is Cambodia. Vietnam invaded Cambodia, then Democratic Kampuchea in 1979 and a new state (People's Republic of Kampuchea) was installed. Many countries (USA, among others) continued to recognize exiled Democratic Kampuchea government as the de jure legitimate government of the country, the DK flag still flew at the UN HQ in New York for years. - What's the point of me arguing there with you and your friends. You have dug the trench of I just don't like it so deep no argument could reach you. You know really well that it all lays on edit consensus. All Baltic states articles have had mostly just Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, unless some active soviet supporter has come and started mass changes. And of course hockey has really strong political stance to have full political state names, even though players such as Komarov was 3 years old when Soviet Union ended and has nothing to do with it. I've looked at the old threads and it all started once with someone changing Estonian swimmer Ivar Stukolkin article years ago, thats sparked the long long threads. Latvian and Lithuanian communities in WP are just even smaller then Estonian. Estonian WP has 633 active users, Latvian has 349 and Lithuanian 374. User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Two articles need to create from redirect page
Riigivolikogu and Riiginõukogu currently redirects to Riigikogu, however Estonian Wikipedia already have related article: et:Riigivolikogu, et:Riiginõukogu, both of them focus on the bicameral Riigikogu after the 1938 election.
