WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Education will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in education. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. Education of Becoming

During the early 1980s quite a number of questions arose amongst certain members of the then Dept of History of Education at UNISA regarding the status, field of study and, in particular, the methodologies employed in History of Education. At the University of South Africa a number of colleagues then started propagating a "new" type of History of Education, referred to as Metagogiek. According to De Jager, DK, Coetzee, JH & Bisschoff, TC. 1983. Metagogiek: Metodologie En Toepassing. HAUM; Pretoria: "The name, Metagogiek, indicates the intention that an all-inclusive view is striven for. Meta pertains to change always taking place and emphasis will be placed on this aspect in particular. The second half of the name, agogics, emphasizes the guidance that one human being offers to another during every phase of life." Therefore one could say the Metagogiek refers to the "pedagogics of change" keeping in mind that, according to advocates of Metagogiek pedagogics focuses on children only - agogics, according to them, includes all human beings, from the cradle to the elderly. While at UNISA, working on my DEd, I became interested in such a topic. I was wondering if such a specific section has relevance on an educational site in Wikipedia and if so where? I went to all three schools in that area. I went to Mount Houston elementary, Northwood Junior high and M.B. Oppositional Culture

I am planning on expanding the article entitled Oppositional Culture. One of the Wikiproject Educations goals are to identify articles that need improvement and improvement. As a theory of underachievement of minority students this explains continuing racial disparities in education inequality. Racial disparities in education despite seeming equal access to education continue to persist. Oppositional cutlure implies that this is a product of social expectation by members of a certain group. I would like to present this theories tenets, its supporting research, and contradictory research in order to present this theory and create a portal for discussion on this topic. There are other pages explaining education disparities by race and I think this will provide a supplement to these pages to provide a better understanding of this issue at large. Gender achievement gap in the US

One of the goals of the Education WikiProject is to identify articles dealing with education in need of improvement and improve them. I am planning on improving the gender sections of the article "Achievement gap in the United States." The gender section as it stands now could be better organized in order to make the information easier to understand. To fix this, I plan on adding subsections that will cover the possible causes of the gender achievement gap, evidence of the gender achievement gap, potential implications of the gender achievement gap, and efforts (both successful and unsuccessful) that have attempted to reduce the gap. I will also expand upon the sections of the article that deal with gender gaps in specific subjects. Finally, I will also add graphs that provide visual evidence of the gender gap. Revision for Racial achievement gap in the United States

The racial achievement gap is currently a major source of contention in the US educational system and deserves the attention of the Wikipedia community. It has been an article under Wikipedia:WikiProject Education, but has yet to receive any major comments from the members. I want to make revisions for this article, which is currently flagged as an article needing improvement. Specifically, this article currently lacks (1) reputable sources, (2) neutrality, and (3) encyclopedic language. I hope to address these issues in my revision and expand on current sections to give a more objective and research-based perspective on the racial achievement gap. I would argue that this article deserves its own Wikipage, separate from Achievement gap in the United States because its antecedents and implications vary from other forms of the achievement gap. Three sections I plan to expand upon are the "Evidence", "Implications", and "Success Stories" section to give a more in-depth examination of the issue. Specifically, I would like to find sources from reputable educational journals, public policies and legislation, and to consider varying perspectives on the issue. Racial Diversity in the U.S. Classroom

I am planning to expand the stub article Diversity in the classroom as part of an assignment for my Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities course at Rice University. Specifically, I would like to focus on racial diversity in U.S. classrooms. This entry was already part of the Education WikiProject, but I feel the page is relevant because it deals directly with classrooms and how diversity impacts learning. Specifically, I would like to define racial diversity in the classroom, give its background in the U.S. (segregation, Brown v. Board of Ed), cite research on its effects, summarize its social implications, and list and explain current policy on racial diversity in schools in America (affirmative action). My sources will include textbooks and readings from my class, newspaper articles, academic journals, etc. By becoming a member of this WikiProject, I hope to help identify, edit, and expand articles on Education. Education-related company article draft for review

For any editors watching this page, I'd like to request assistance with improving an education-related article, EduCap, about a private student loan company. As such, I think it falls under the purview of this WikiProject, and I've also sought assistance at WikiProject Cooperation. Because I've undertaken this on behalf of the company, I'm avoiding any direct edits to the mainspace, and instead seeking consensus to expand and revise the article.

To that end I have prepared a new draft, which attempts to address the issues with the current version. In particular, I have aimed to provide more information about the company's history and operations. Updates to "Diversity in the Classroom page

Amanda, apparently I made the same bad mistake here as I did in Chloe's article and actually implemented the changes I initially suggested. There's no use in undoing them, but consider it huge favor. Nevertheless, here were general suggestions that I followed and that you should, too:

1. You need a Reference and/or footnotes list. Just follow the generous example I provided you with and you should be fine. I noticed you had listed the citation within the text when I was in edit mode, but due to technical errors, they were not displaying properly. Fix this.

1. You're completely lacking a "See also" section. You need to include at least a handful of links to related pages so that your page has a much larger chance of generating traffic. Possible page links could be included towards Race, Gender, Native American, African America, Jim Crow....pages like these will do fine.

1. Your "Americanization School" section could use some expansion. I feel that the concept of the assimilation-induced environment is important and deserves more information. List some of its negative effects on the minority children who were enrolled into them. Maybe even a quote or something from a notable figure who advocated such schools

I hope these suggestions get the ideas flowing, and I hope the rest of the Wiki Commmunity here can may lend a helping hand as well. Good luck!!!

Updates to the "Oppositional Culture" article

This is a great article Risa, and here are some ways that you can make it even more super awesome....er(???)

• I agree with Julia that the lead needs to be shortened. However, another suggestion I might add is that it seems to hover between the educational and non-educational aspects of oppositional culture too much. Since the article is mostly concerned with education, I feel that when shortening the introduction, focus on that and make your thesis clearer.

• The historical section on your page needs to be expanded. I noticed you pick off right from "Brown v. Board of Education", but "Plessy v. Ferguson" was the trial that legalized racial separation between "colored" and white individuals in school and elsewhere. Therefore, I feel you should include some information there, too. And when you mention some the "racial gaps in academics" a couple stats or figures would also help.

• I feel that since we're going to be talking about oppositional culture regarding education, then a small section should be devoted towards some of the different conditions that African Americans and Whites' schools were in. Give some funding figures, concrete examples of how the black schools were inferior, achievement results between white and black students, and so on.

• I feel that far too much emphasis is given on John Ogbu's analyses. I understand that he has a lot of great and relevant information, but surely there have to be other scholars that you could discuss at length, too. I feel you should either increase the amount of information you have from other scholars, or decrease the amount of Ogbu info in relation to these other scholars. The "Prudence Carter" section was good, but we need more authors. And you also don't have to explicitly create a new section for the other authors. Just discuss them regularly and mention them in the citations.

• Maybe you could join another Wikiproject in addition to education. Wikiproject Discrimination? Wikiproject Race?

I hope this helps and gets some ideas flowing. I hope everybody who visits this WikiProject education page can see what needs to be done and maybe even help!

A Norwegian resistance fighter and propenent of independent schools

Should we have an article about

"Hans Bovim (May 31, 1915 – April 4, 2010) was a proponent of independent schools, activist of the Resistance Movement against Nazi occupation of Norway during World War 2, and headmaster of Kristelig Gymnasium during the years of 1955-1985.

He was imprisoned in a concentration camp in Germany during World War 2.

I found two independent articles about him,[1][2] so it appears that he just barely passes our notability guidelines for biographies. So yes, we probably can have an article about him. It would be good to find a few more sources though. — Mr. Stradivarius ^♫ 15:03, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Open education project

Hi, I want to let this WikiProject know about a project I expect to be building over the next year or so, which I think is within the scope of this WikiProject. The purpose of the project is to guide people in the open educational resources world in improving Wikipedia content related to their expertise. It's an area I've been involved in for some time, and I see lots of room for improvement in a collection of related articles (like in so many areas on Wikipedia). The idea is to help various people interested and knowledgeable in OER and related areas to learn to improve Wikipedia content, while simultaneously engaging existing Wikipedians to help in that process. The project is founded in a deep respect for, and knowledge of, Wikipedia's values and policies; it will be conducted in a transparent way; participants will be trained in distinguishing between advocacy and neutral, verifiable information, and leaving any advocacy efforts out of their work on Wikipedia content. This planning phase has been funded by the Hewlett Foundation; see the page I'm setting up for the project for more about how we're planning to approach it.

There is a series of articles about people being educated by their peer group:

I've added links in the "See also" sections so they are now interlinked. Some of them are underdeveloped, some of them could be merged and some could be renamed, e.g. Peer education could be a redirect to Peer mentoring and that article be renamed Peer education in health, and Peer tutor could be probably merged into Peer mentoring, the most developed page. PISA and poverty - ongoing argument could use some help

Hi there, The article Programme for International Student Assessment has experienced a low-intensity edit war over a criticism of PISA that is based on some very dubious uses of poverty measures. Could some brave soul give us an opinion on the talk page?

The discussion was already on when I jumped in. I cared to read the proper data sources (something I`m used to do professionally) and identified the argument (originally from a blog post) as either lacking a proper understanding of the data it was using, or, alternatively, intentionally misleading. I tried to explain why we should remove it, but one fellow wikipedian seems to hold it dearly to his heart - or alternatively, knows how to interpret data sources as a buddhist puzzle where the truth lies behind the words used to describe the data, reaching such a high level of comprehension on the subject that my mind fails to grasp his wisdom.
