Request for an independent look at proposed article

I've researched and drafted a proposed article about StudentCam, the annual student filmmaking competition sponsored by C-SPAN. That article is presently in my user subspace, here. I hesitate to post it immediately because I work with C-SPAN's communications team, and am mindful that I have a WP:CONFLICT with C-SPAN as a general subject. I hasten to add that the article has been written to strictly follow Wikipedia policies and guidelines, WP:VERIFY, WP:RS and WP:NPOV among them. I don't believe there is anything remotely controversial about the proposed article, but to stay on the safe side, I figured this was an appropriate place to post a review request. If there are no objections after a day or so, I'll probably go ahead and post it up. But I'm open to any feedback you may have here or on my talk page. I think you did a great job of keeping the article neutral. (Then again, you're right that the topic isn't too controversial to begin with.) You also give a sufficiently comprehensive overview of the topic, including its history, the publicity it got from high-ranking public officials, and the number of participants. Good job...I even think you could easily make this a WP:GA! And if you're looking for verifiable information on the awards given out, this could be a good place to start. English Baccalaureate

Article on GCSEs needs updating, for example on current state of English Bacc proposal; search Wikipedia and you find the proposal is alive and well, and becoming UK Government policy. Dubious data in Pell Grant article

The Pell Grant article has the data quoted below; I went to the sources, and it quotes them accurately. My doubts are about the likelihood that the criteria for the grants actually grew so much more stringent in the years between 2000 and 2006. In 2000, families could get grants if they made less than $41,000; in 2006, they had to make less than half that in order to qualify; at that rate, in 2012 they'll have to make less than $10,000 in order to get a grant. I can't help but feel that someone transposed a digit or two.

"In the 2005-06 school year, students with family incomes of less than $20,000 accounted for 57% of Pell Grant recipients—35% attended public two-year colleges, and 42% attended public four-year colleges.[3] The National Postsecondary Student Aid Study found that during the 1999-2000 school year, students from families making less than $41,000 accounted for 90% of Pell Grant recipients.[4]"

I'm sorry but I'm not seeing the problem here. Those making less than 20k are a subset of those making less than 41k so you can't compare those percentages.
I'd poke around in the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study data if you want to narrow this down even further. I went through an NCES workshop a few months ago focusing on this data set so let me know if you need help. ElKevbo (talk) 16:17, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Adding "Popular pages" to the "Articles" section

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to article lists used for generating the Wikipedia:WikiProject Education#Statistics. A link to the Popular pages subpage can be posted there.

The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Citation templates now support more identifiers

Recent changes were made to citations templates (such as {{citation}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place |id={{arxiv|0123.4567}} (or worse |url=http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567), now you can simply use |arxiv=0123.4567, likewise for |id={{JSTOR|0123456789}} and |url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789 → |jstor=0123456789.

New sub project idea

I have an idea for a new sub project idea, to see peoples views on the idea. "WikiProject UK Education" to focus more on education in the UK and focus on articles that current don't come under WikiProject Schools or WikiProject Universities such as Pupil Referral Unit, National Curriculum (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), School governor, Education Act 2002 and many more which are all related to the same topic but are all part of different projects or not part of an project, and as the other WikiProjects cover the whole world and not the UK, also there needs to be an effort to create articles which currently don't exist relating to UK education such as Governor Wales, List of primary schools in Bristol, Cabot Learning Federation, St Bernadette's Catholic Secondary School and hundreds more. Move it from a how to type article to more *about* lesson plans, e.g. history, examples from different cultures, criticism, etc. In "external links" et al. point interested parties to places where they can get how-to information, but overall more informing people why lesson plans are/aren't relevant. -- Charles on May 20th 00:00h. Compulsory Education Act requested, please

At present, if one types "compulsory education act" in to the box on the left, one gets redirected to a specific act in Oregon. The Compulsory Education Act happened in Europe before this act - for example, the 1870 Compulsory Education Act in the United Kingdom and the first country to have a compulsory education act in Europe was Austria. same framework

Wouldn't it be a good idea to use the same framework, as we did for Belgium and Cyprus? This was part of a Comenius project but could be extented to the EU and other countries all over the world. Inventive Spelling

I have read the article on inventive spelling. First of all inventive spelling follows normal child development. A teacher who allows inventive spelling in her/his Early Childhood Classroomis using normal child development to aid in the education process. A child will develop through phases of writing. The teacher encourages the child's development by working with them at their developmental phase. It is not to say that traditional spelling should not be taught but rather that they child be allowed to express themselves as a writer with confidence and independence while learning the phonetic skills to produce traditional spellings. It is not an all or nothing situation. The sooner the child perceives himself/herself as a writer the easier it is to develop in depth writing skills. Children who are forced to learn only traditional spellings and use only traditional spellings in their independent writing do not become independent writers. These children become dependent on adult intervention and limit their writing to exactly what they know is correct. They lack the confidence to take risks with their writing. Writing is so much more than spelling. It is a form of communication that can allow a child to tell a story full of detail with a beginning,middle and end. Not sure this should be in a high-level article on Education, generally. It mostly applies to languages where the sound differs considerably from the spoken word, such as English, which this encyclopedia admittedly encompasses. French to a lesser extent, Character-based languages, like Chinese, not at all. Doesn't seem general IMO. Spanish is not that difficult, for example. So general pronouncements at a high level may not be accurate. And whether the other languages have done studies or even care, may have to be researched.
And may be US-centric, as well, since the other English-speaking countries may not consider this a problem needing a solution. Student7 (talk) 13:34, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Engineering

Please have a look at Engineering college and College of Engineering. The two articles are in horrible shape. In the former, the list of english specialist schools needs to be moved and in the latter, all the lists need to be moved to the country lists. Then, a merger and major expansion and globalisation of the article is needed with(if required) a link to individual country-wise lists. Hope this figures somewhere up in the priority list. Standards-based assessment

Given how much of a hot-button topic this has been at times, I'm surprised at how bad a shape the article Standards-based assessment is in. It seems to veer between pro- and anti-standards-based testing, with some passages seeming to reference events that only affected one town or state. Bachelor of Technology - Dubious Information Under Canada Heading

The Canada section of the Bachelor of Technology page is not factual. It states: 

"Community colleges are represented by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and university-level institutions by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the national accrediting body of universities in Canada. However, some community college engineering programs have recently been accredited by Engineers Canada following a thorough review by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), i.e., Conestoga College and the British Columbia Institute of Technology"

This statement gives the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) as an example of a community college that has gained accreditation through the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Blackboard Inc.

For anyone watching this board, I've been working with the company Blackboard Inc. for the past few months to evaluate their current article and work on proposing a version that's both more accurate to the company's history and current status, while also fulfilling Wikipedia's goal of describing significant aspects of the company as an encyclopedic topic. The existing article is very much not that; for a long while it has been mostly a couple of bulleted lists naming their products and then some loosely written material about its legal issues. All in all, not a very good Wikipedia entry.

What I've prepared as a potential replacement covers both existing topics in more detail, plus additional relevant aspects of the company verified with reliable sources, privileging Wikipedia's guidelines while also presenting a better company overview. I've posted this proposed replacement to my userspace, here: User:WWB_Too/Blackboard_Inc. (FYI, the company's non-free logo has been commented out, and the categories have been disabled.)

Because of the potential conflict of interest inherent in my relationship to the company, I'd like to ask members of this WikiProject for feedback and, if you think it's ready, to exchange the current, lackluster version, for my more developed draft. If you have any suggestions, please add them to my note on the Blackboard Talk page or, if you think it's good to go, let me know (or move it yourself). It might be good to drop a line at WT:UNI, too, given Blackboard's prominence in higher education.
You're right that the current article is terrible. From spending just a few minutes on this, it does appear that your draft article is a significant improvement. It does seem a tiny bit cheerleady in places but nothing egregious that should prevent it from being adopted as the main article for this subject. In particular, there are a handful of places where there are claims about being the leading provider in __ or being the most popular product for __ that need to be sourced using reliable third-party sources. There could also be more about the company's somewhat negative reputation, particularly among faculty, but I don't know (a) if there are good sources for that and (b) how much of that is really attributable to Blackboard and is not really aimed at course management systems in general.

As to some of your comments: it wasn't my intent to be cheerleady, but I'm open to specific suggestions about where changes could be made. Also the whole thing is pretty carefully sourced; if you could point to specific claims that you think could use a citation, it may simply be a case of figuring out which source already in use provides the necessary verification. And while my draft may not be perfect, I'd also suggest it would be preferable to copy it into the mainspace and deal with additional changes there. Let me know what you think. I'm amenable to replacing the current mainspace article with your draft. Even if there are minor problems or issues that should be addressed they're not egregious and the draft article is significantly better than the current one. I've had just about enough of everyone worshipping at the shrine of Benjamin Bloom and his taxonomy. I'd like to remind everyone that he developed this theory of epistemology with his GRADUATE students and never taught a single student in K-12. While his ideas may be worth investigating, the educational community has gone too far in basing everything on his hierarchy of learning. His students testified that he was incredibly monotone to listen to and that he had only a single picture hanging in his office - hardly the picture of excellent pedagogy and differentiated learning we are all supposed to be practicing these days!Mcs1968 (talk) 02:15, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Achievement gap article

How does everyone feel about the article, "Achievement gap in the United States" as it stands now? I think that by trying to explain both the racial and gender achievement gaps, it is hard to read. I think it would be beneficial to create a separate entry that deals specifically with the racial achievement gap, which has different factors and implications than the gender-based gap. This would allow for a better explanation of the different causes and allow for more room to discuss strategies that have been used in an effort to close the gap. What does everyone think? High School Dropout

I plan on creating a new section for the page entitled “High School Drop Out” with a subsection for the United States. It will be a brief blurb describing the bare bones of the issue. There will be a link to a new article I will write that will explore high school dropout in the United States in more detail. Hopefully the new section on the current dropping out page will encourage others to write on the topic from different countries’ perspectives. The new article I write, High School Dropout in the United States, will look at different theories of high school dropout, risk factors, and consequences specific to the U.S.

Education in Africa

I am planning on contributing the issues of education in Africa and the obstacles they must cross. A major issue is gender disparity where girls are not receiving the same educational opportunities. I plan to focus on the disparity between the men and women in education and current policies changing the disparity in Africa. I will expand on the information about NGO's that focus on educational disparities. To support these claims I will use credible sources such as the Millennium Development Goals that state why this is of importance and use Nussbaums, "Creating Capabilities" to discuss what is being done. Statistics will be brought in from UN records. Specifically, my focus is "Women's Education" which all these factors contribute too. Eventually, I would like to establish myself as a credible contributor in order to be accepted in the greater Wikipedia community as a whole. Need for focus on distance learning

While I see separate articles on Online education, E-learning, and Distance education, there is very little attention in this project on those subjects. No templates, navboxes, infoboxes, etc. Indeed, I can't see where these topics are outlined with each other. Isn't the growth of such learning worthy of attention? Indeed, I see that articles about major universities UC Berkeley, University of Kentucky, etc. are/were missing info on their DL programs. I'm not an WP:EXPERT in this area, so I hope (and challenge) Project Education to work on these topics. --S. Rich (talk) 22:13, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

History of scholarship

Hi! As a new page patroller, I came across the new article, History of scholarship. So far, I don't see that it's varies enough from Scholarly method or that the information in History of scholarship can't be put into Scholarly method but this is admittedly not my area of expertise. This and Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals are the closest Wikiprojects I could think of to ask to take a look at the article and attempt to determine if the subject warrants its own article or not. I don't care about the outcome as long as there's more eyes on it than mine and a newish editor. Language Education task force

Hi everyone! Recently I have been updating WikiProject Linguistics, consolidating some of the daughter projects into task forces and creating a couple of new ones. That has got me thinking that it would be nice to have a task force that deals with language education, as there are quite a few articles out there on the subject, and many of them need a lot of work and would benefit from some collaboration. I think the obvious place to put it would be as a subpage of this project, maybe at Wikipedia:WikiProject Education/Language, although I think it should be affiliated with both WikiProject Education and WikiProject Linguistics. Request review of new education-related draft

Hi, I'm looking for some feedback on a new article draft I have proposed for New Leaders for New Schools, a non-profit organization involved in education. I have previously posted requests on the article's talk page and at WP:COIN, however I have not yet had any response. I have recently written a new draft of this article on behalf of the organization, to reflect its recent change in name and launch of new programs. As I have a conflict of interest, I have been looking for feedback from other editors before making any edits or renaming the article myself. Since the article is about an education-related topic, I wonder if an editor from this Wikiproject would mind reading through my draft and the explanation on the article's talk page? I would welcome any constructive feedback.

School Statement of Faith

Can someone give us a third opinion over at Talk:Patrick Henry College#Statement of Faith Bias on whether to include the entire statement of faith or simply a summary? You can see the two proposed versions in this diff. I think the summary is better, though would be open to changing which details are included in the summary, while User:Jhusband3 thinks it would be better to have the entire statement. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 08:10, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Response to intervention

I've recently begun an overhaul of the Response to intervention page (which, as an aside, should probably be moved to Response to Intervention for proper capitalization), and it would be great if some folks could give it a further look-over. I was a little appalled by the state that it was in a few days ago (more of less an obfuscating mush of facts, opinions, redundancies, and irrelevancies), and while I think it's a bit better now, there's still a lot of room for improvement.
