BWF International Challenge / International Series / Future Series

It looks like a user created pages for 2016 BWF International Challenge, 2016 BWF International Series, 2016 BWF Future Series and they are a bit forgotten. Are the pages approved for this WikiProject? And also, do we have to add them to {{BWF Seasons}} template? Griff88 (talk) 01:51, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Usually the series is playing by lower ranked players that do not have merit to play in Super Series or Grand Prix tournaments. So basically the players may not be recognise compare to players participating in upper class tournament. So less focus on those tournaments. Anyway, is up to you. --Aleenf1 14:09, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
I like that the pages exist, and I might take the time to fill out the information at a later date, but I do not believe that each tournament deserves it's own Report page similar to the Super Series tournaments.--MorrisIV (talk) 16:18, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Can I make similar pages for the 2017 cycle? Ricks1456 (talk) 06:08, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

It may risk AfD though, since for non-badminton follower users it might not be notable. I think the 2017 BWF Season page can be a good coverage for those tournaments. Griff88 (talk) 14:37, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

RFC on sports notability

An RFC has recently been started regarding a potential change to the notability guidelines for sportspeople. Please join in the conversation. Thank you. Primefac (talk) 23:07, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Notability again

On 19 Dec 2016, shortly before the discussion above about WP:NBADMINTON, there was a change from "are presumed notable if ..." (used by all other sports except the occasional use of "deemed" or "assumed") to "are likely to be notable if ..." in the opening line. This change doesn't appear to have been discussed on this talk page or at Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(sports).

This wording is now being used to justify the nomination at AfD of a large number of national champion badminton players - see User_talk:Sportsfan_1234#Badminton_players.

Just a heads-up to Badminton enthusiasts - myself, I've been alerted by the flood of badminton players appearing at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Article alerts, but it seems to be a gender-neutral campaign. PamD 08:44, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Removal of infobox templates

Recently, user @Kante4: has removed infobox templates like {{Covert}}, {{Height}}, {{MedalSport}}, {{MedalCountry}}, etc. from several badminton BLPs without developing consensus, e.g. see here & here . I am posting this comment here so that I can get inputs from both Kante4 & the project members. Thanks. - NitinMlk (talk) 19:33, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Height and weight automatically converts. I will add the sport and country back, my fault. I thought that was not needed as the country and sport is given at the infobox, but like i said, i add them back. Kante4 (talk) 08:20, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
Added back the sport and country. Kante4 (talk) 08:34, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
Kante4, thank you. - NitinMlk (talk) 19:12, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

2015 Gwangju medallist

After Yu Xiaohan was tested positive for doping violation at the Badminton at the 2015 Summer Universiade, the medals was reallocated. Then at the medal table state that Go Ah-ra/ Yoo Hae-won and Hsu Ya-ching/ Pai Yu-po won the silver and bronze medal respectively. Can anyone help me to find relevant sources about it? Thanks Stvbastian (talk) 10:37, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Discussion at NSPORTS

Hello all. In an effort to finally resolve the never-ending and annoying GNG v SSG issue, I've proposed a revision of the NSPORTS introduction. You are all invited to take part in the discussion. Thank you. Jack | talk page 06:20, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:26, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Some suggestions regarding WP:NBADMINTON

Discussion of the current criteria and the suggested changes

I've listed below the relevant points of the policy & my suggested changes:

(2) Competed in the quarter finals at a tournament of the highest level outside of the Olympics or World Championships (e.g. Continental Championships, BWF Super Series or Commonwealth Games) in teams or singles or doubles competitions.

It should be replaced with: "Competed in the quarter finals of the Continental Championships, BWF Super Series, Commonwealth Games, or Continental Games in teams or singles or doubles competitions."

My suggestion: "Competed in the Continental Championships, BWF Super Series, Commonwealth Games, or Continental Games in teams or singles or doubles competitions." --Florentyna (talk) 09:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

(3) Medalist at the highest international teams or singles/doubles championships of a country (e.g. Canadian Open, German Open, Slovak International).

Just have a look at the BWF's tournament calender. The highest level/graded event of Argentina, Aruba, Croatia, Israel, Ivory Coast, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, etc. is Future Series. And the highest level event of countries like Chile, Cuba, Estonia, Greece, Guatemala, Iceland, Jamaica, Mauritius, Mexico, Pakistan, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Uganda, etc. is International Series. So, according to the above criterion, a player becomes notable if he/she reaches to the final of a Future/International Series in the aforementioned countries. But if a player wins even an International Challenge event – which is graded higher that the International/Future Series – in other countries, he/she remains non-notable. In short, the criterion mentioned under this point is flawed. We should just mention the minimum grading of an event, reaching final of which is required to become notable.

My suggestion: "Medalist at other official tournaments of the BWF like Int. Series, Int. Challenge, Future Series." --Florentyna (talk) 09:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

(4) Medalist at tournaments of the BWF Grand Prix Gold and Grand Prix.

Replace medalist with finalist, as the players neither officially represent their nations in the open events nor do they get medals in them.

My suggestion: "Rank 1 to 16 at tournaments of the BWF Grand Prix Gold and Grand Prix." --Florentyna (talk) 09:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

(5) Gold medalist at a national teams or singles/doubles championship, for countries that regularly send athletes to the Olympics.

This point is against Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Sports_personalities. A player should at least represent his/her nation in some international tournaments at the senior level. They can't become notable by just winning a local event. So, if possible, just remove this point. - NitinMlk (talk) 19:16, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

My suggestion: "Medalist at a national teams or singles/doubles championship, for countries that regularly send athletes to the Olympics" --Florentyna (talk) 09:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

General discussion

The most relevant and important policy here is WP:BLP. That links to WP:NPOV. The simple truth is that we cannot have a verifiably neutral article on a living individual unless there are reliable independent sources. And that means proper sources, not the two websites associated with BWF that are the sole cited sources for a substantial number of articles on badminton players. Guy (Help!) 02:26, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

An athlete is presumed to be notable if the person has actively participated in a major amateur or professional competition or won a significant honor and so is likely to have received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject. For me this is much softer than the current badminton criteria. This means for me, that reports in daily newspapers where for instance are listed results of national championships up to rank 16 generating notability. --Florentyna (talk) 09:37, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
But WP:GNG requires non-trivial coverage, and match scores are trivial. Guy (Help!) 22:26, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
WP:GNG is exactly what the name suggests. It's a general notability guideline for those cases where topic-specific guidelines don't exist. The en wiki is filled with articles, which fail GNG. But those articles still exist because of the community's consensus. e.g. humongous number of villages, which lie in the far-flung corners of the world will instantly fail GNG. But we still have articles about them due to WP:GEOLAND. Similarly, all the high schools are considered notable unless you could prove that a particular high school doesn't exists; there's an essay regarding that – WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES – which works like wiki policies at the AfDs. Similarly, there are huge number of articles of clergies, military officers, academicians, etc., most of whom fail GNG. But they still survive deletion due to the community's consensus. Similarly, any sportsperson who ever participated in an Olympic event is notable, irrespective of GNG – WP:NOLYMPICS. And WP:NSPORT isn't any different. In fact, guidelines of many sports are nothing short of ludicrous, e.g. one has to play a single domestic cricket match to become notable – WP:NCRIC. Here's an example of a cricketer's article, which was snow kept: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Goodhew (Kent cricketer). - NitinMlk (talk) 19:22, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
JzG, I totally understand your point. But I also know a bit about the badminton community. That's why I already knew that they won't agree to even slightly tighten up the notability criteria. As you can see above, only one member responded, who basically ridiculed my suggested changes. In fact, they in turn suggested to make the present criteria even further lax. So, this clearly shows that the community won't tighten up criteria. - NitinMlk (talk) 20:35, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
It's not up to them. A group of fans of a sport can't decide to arbitrarily ignore a foundational policy. Guy (Help!) 22:26, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
First, members of this project are the most knowledgeable about badminton on this wiki. Some of them have been impartially editing badminton-related articles for over one decade. In fact, this project exists because of their efforts. To label all of them as 'fans' isn't correct.
Second, just have a look at the WP:ATH. All major/Olympic sports have their notability guidelines, just like badminton. And all of those policies are there because of the consensus developed by the most knowledgeable members of the respective communities. So, only way to tinker the guideline is by developing consensus here. Having said that, I will advise some of the new users to use independent reliable sources instead of depending on the BWF's official website. - NitinMlk (talk) 19:22, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
I think the old list of WP:NBADMINTON is ok. Since i who created some articles about badminton players with non proper source, and without secondary sources. I am here only a few months, and i make an article just see the examples of existing articles without regard to the rules of WP:BLP, WP:NPOV, and WP:GNG. In my next article, it would be my concern, and please correct me if I am wrong again. Thanks --Stvbastian (talk) 19:58, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi all, since BWF have a new tournament structure in 2018, i hope we all can renew the criteria for the WP:NBAD. Stvbastian (talk) 02:27, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Indiscriminate linking of names

At Maltese National Badminton Championships I removed the links to the names of the players that had been added by another user. This is an excellent example of why links should not be added indiscriminately:

  • Almost all of the links were dead. The only live links were misdirects -- one was to 19th century US President A. Jackson, another to Godwin Grech who was an Australian Treasury official involved in a scandal, and the third to Kenneth Wain, a Maltese philosopher who does not appear to play Badminton.
  • It is extremely unlikely that articles are going to be created for all or even a few of the Maltese Badminton players in this article. Links can be added if articles are created.
  • There was not a single link to a valid article about these people, so the reader is no worse off because of the removal of these links.
  • Many of the links use initials instead of first names, so even if an article were created, it probably wouldn't show up in this article unless the creator though ahead to create a redirect, and few do that.

User:Florentyna has restored these links (avoiding the misdirects) explaining "This is not the way we are doing in the badminton project." I do not find this to be a convincing argument. And I have found no evidence on the project page or talk archives that this has ever been discussed.

She/he has also suggested that I look at the German Wikipedia. It may be that things are done differently in the German Wikipedia, but that doesn't mean that English Wikipedia should adopt the German approach.

User:Florentyna has offered no reasonable argument for indiscriminate linking. I would be interested in hearing what other members of this project think. Ground Zero | t 10:22, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

I support you for non full name links removal, but not the badminton players with full name. Wikipedia does not prohibit any "red links" which useful to indicate that article still not existed or not created, even think to add it back once it create, it will not be a fine job to identify which article needs it. For redirect, just do smartly, not simply get rid of it. --Aleenf1 08:10, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
I have found the relevant style guide for this question. WP:REDLINK says:
"A red link, like this one, signifies a link to a page that does not exist in Wikipedia. It is useful in editing article text to create a red link to indicate that a page will be created soon or that an article should be created for the topic because the subject is notable and verifiable. One study conducted in 2008 showed that red links helped Wikipedia grow.[1] However, rather than using red links in lists, disambiguation pages or templates as an article creation guide, editors are encouraged to write the article first, and instead use WikiProjects or user spaces to keep track of unwritten articles.
"Articles should not have red links to topics that are unlikely ever to have an article, such as a celebrity's romantic interest (who is not a celebrity in his or her own right, and thus lacks notability). Red links should not be made to every chapter in a book nor should they be made to deleted articles—but one may link to the title of a deleted article if one intends to write an article about an entirely different topic that has the same title."
Since the article in question is a list article, the redlinks should be moved to the project page, or to a subpage of the project. Ground Zero | t 10:21, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
"Good red links help Wikipedia—they encourage new contributors in useful directions, and remind us that Wikipedia is far from finished." Is not wrong to have red links in article, even though they may not created. So they are many article have such practice, i don't see any concerns for this. --Aleenf1 12:27, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't disagree with the general guidance on redlinks, but the Style guide offers specific guidance in the case of lists. In the specific case to which I am referring, there is not a single valid link to an existing article. This is evidence that these redlinks serve no purpose but to create clutter and the likelihood of future misdirects. As mentioned, when I came across the article, there were three blue links -- all three of them were misdirects. Ground Zero | t 13:55, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
This is inevitable, i believe Florentyna are not going to misdirect the links but he didn't check the link first, naturally not his fault because we don't know such links are redirect, thats why links need to maintain all the time. --Aleenf1 14:18, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

As there has been no further discussion, there seems to be no reason why badminton articles should be treated differently from other articles in Wikipedia when it comes to linking lists: "...rather than using red links in lists, disambiguation pages or templates as an article creation guide, editors are encouraged to write the article first, and instead use WikiProjects or user spaces to keep track of unwritten articles." Ground Zero | t 12:40, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Multi-million question, are you sure you can tracking thousand of unwritten articles? If so, if page exist, if it is possible for you to add back those who not linked? Think yourself. --Aleenf1 13:56, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

What from my page of view can be done, is using colspan and rowspan to reduce the "red". But no delinking. This is very fast done, but the re-adding of the links would really take a lot of time. For me there is no reason to delete the work other users did in the last years simply by deleting all brackets. Hours of work one can destroy within a couple of minutes by doing this. All the linked persons are as champions relevant. Tools like the Missing topics tool [1] will not more working correctly (i.e. not more giving the correct results). Another reason is, that we are still in the building-up phase of the whole wikipedia project. A lot of misspellings occur (for instance Dimesh instead Dimech). With this red-linked articles it is very comfortable thing to find out such misspellings (with the mentioned tool). And instead discussing weeks and weeks about this, if everybody would write two articles in this time about badminton players from Malta, all the discussion would be worthless. --Florentyna (talk) 15:26, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Re-adding a link when an article is created takes very, very little time. There is no sign that any articles will be created anyway -- the evidence is there that no article has ever been created about these people.
If it takes hours of work to add links, then you are doing it the wrong way. I cannot imagine how you could possibly spend hours adding links to this article.
The work will not be "destroyed" as I will transfer the links to a project page as per the style guide direction I cited above. This will create a place someone who wants to work on articles to begin, in the unlikely event that someone does.
Finding reliable sources about any but the most recent of the champions will be next to impossible anyway because the subject matter is way too obscure, so even if someone did take an interest, they would not be able to create a valid article.
If you disagree with WP:REDLINK, you can propose changes at Wikipedia talk:Red link. Ground Zero | t 14:04, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
I've come here wondering about the project's stance on notability because of all the redlinks in the yyyy BWF Season articles. You could help this by putting on the project page whether winning a particular tournament, or being a runner-up, bestows notability. Schwede66 17:45, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
See WP:NBADMINTON. --Florentyna (talk) 09:26, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Almost four years after I started this discussion, the Maltese article linked above still has not one valid blue link. Not one. Florentyna has not created any articles for asny if these people. And no one else has either. Furthermore, in the large majority of cases, it would not likely be possible to create an article using reliance sources for these people. This field of red links serves no purpose. The use of WP:NBADMINTON to support mas red linking of articles violates the spirit and intent of general Wikipedia style. Ground Zero | t 11:23, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Ground Zero, I agree that the Maltese Nationals mass red-linking serves no real purpose. Unless they can achieve something that listed in WP:NBADMINTON, no one will bother create the article. But I oppose the mass red-link removal at the (insert year here) BWF Season pages like what Schwede66 said. Removing the red links of the tournaments and the winners and the runner-up will create another problem should their article will be created later. Some of the winners are already notable per point 3 of WP:NBADMINTON by winning the respective tournaments. Griff88 (talk) 07:41, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

And now there is finally a blue link again on the Maltese National Badminton Championships page! Hurrah. It's too bad that it links to an article about an Australian rugby player, and there no evidence that he ever played badminton. But at least we're avoiding the theoretical possibility that some day someone might actually write an article about one of these people and forget to link it here. Red links like these are far more likely to become bad links than useful links. Ground Zero | t 04:22, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello Badminton experts. I found this draft article, which is up for review at WP:AFC. Can someone take a look at it? I don't know much about sports references.—Anne Delong (talk) 12:00, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

BWF Junior International tournament title

I see that User:Fahrurozi.86 and User:Zoglophie adding junior tournament results in some articles. But, there were inconsistent for tournament title. For example in Phittayaporn Chaiwan article: some tournaments are using and some are not using the sponsorship information, and sometimes the sponsorship information does not complete. My suggestion for the title refer to German Wikipedia (see: [2]). Roza BTY Junior International Challenge simply write as Thailand Junior; Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior International Grand Prix simply write as Indonesia Junior, etc.

This is the example for the table:
BWF Junior International
Girls' singles

Year Tournament Level Opponent Score Result
2017 Thailand Junior International Challenge
2017 Indonesia Junior International Grand Prix
2018 Singapore Youth International Series
2019 Danish Junior Cup‎ International Series

If you have a suggestion, please leave a comment. Stvbastian (talk) 01:46, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

What the tournament official title? --Aleenf1 03:47, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Reference is one & only Bwf site, and we can trust this as a reliable source because all the results of Junior international events are available for New gen players. Not mentioning the top players. It is a great idea and we should work upon it. Further improvements as mentioned here can be done. Zoglophie (talk) 04:17, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

You mean every tournament participated? --Aleenf1 05:43, 2 May 2020 (UTC)
@Aleen all the junior tournament official title available in bwfbadminton.com. For example in 2018, Thailand Junior official title is Yonex-Shera-Roza-Bty Junior International, Indonesia Junior official title is Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix. Just like the senior tournament title ex. CELCOM AXIATA Malaysia Open simply write as Malaysia Open. Not every tournament participated are listed in the table, but only the final result. @Zoglophie yes the tournament results are available in BWF site. But, when you are citing a reference for Wikipedia article, it would be great to use a reliable secondary source (see: WP:NOR).Stvbastian (talk) 07:27, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Actually the Bwf site is reliable in some areas as I mentioned here. Some areas like the h2h details, the information is very much wrong. I discovered there was no Results available of WJC in official site eventhough it is a bwf event. But this is another topic, here discussion is about the Junior tournaments, so i believe we should trust this for including Results. From some years, there is i think no mistake in entering the data in the site. I wish there was a secondary source available as you are talking about, but it is not. Zoglophie (talk) 07:39, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Thailand Junior, what is Thailand Junior? Even myself also not get it based on that title. We need to standardize the naming conventions. As for the results table, hope is the finals only and not every tournament participated. --Aleenf1 07:50, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

User:Aleenf1, yes only finals day are included as per my edits.  🗿 ZoGlOpHiE 🖋️ 📒

@Aleen Thailand Junior or Thailand Junior International or Yonex-Shera-Roza-Bty Junior International is an international junior badminton tournament held in Thailand (see also: in German Wikipedia). Please give your suggestion to standardize the naming of tournament title. @Zoglophie since you already mentioned about reference from the beginning, i would like to let you know that Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published secondary sources and, to a lesser extent, on tertiary sources and primary sources (per WP:PSTS). Tournament result in BWF site is a primary source, so while are you citing a reference for an article in Wikipedia, it would be better to use reliable, published secondary sources. For an example in Benyapa Aimsaard, all the sources that you citing are primary sources. Here are some secondary sources to replaced the primary in Benyapa Aimsaard article: [3], [4], [5].

Another suggestion for table:
BWF Junior International
Girls' singles

Year Tournament Opponent Score Result
2017 Thailand Junior
2017 Indonesia Junior
2018 Singapore Youth
2018 Santo Domingo Junior
BWF Junior International Grand Prix tournament
  BWF Junior International Challenge tournament
  BWF Junior International Series tournament
  BWF Junior Future Series tournament

Stvbastian (talk) 02:22, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Thailand Junior International? Since the tournament can be promoted or demoted, than is much more headache here. For colour code i'm not have any point of view, but please care for colour blind person, as BWF tournament grade has been mixed up over the years. --Aleenf1 04:00, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
A superscript text like Thailand Junior International JIC would be an option too.--Aleenf1 04:03, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
Aleen Thank you for your suggestion. Ill going with the second table with friendly color for color blind person (per color blind friendly palette).

BWF Junior International
Girls' singles

Year Tournament Opponent Score Result
2017 Thailand Junior International
2017 Indonesia Junior International
2018 Singapore Youth International
2018 Santo Domingo Junior International
BWF Junior International Grand Prix tournament
  BWF Junior International Challenge tournament
  BWF Junior International Series tournament
  BWF Junior Future Series tournament

Stvbastian (talk) 08:01, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

I think every junior tour can simply use XXX Junior International with the notable exceptions of Indonesia and Thailand which have 2 junior tournaments each. Three of them uses a club's name (Jaya Raya, Banthongyord, Granular) rather than a country name, while the other is called Jakarta Junior Open. The project members here can make a consensus for these 4 tournaments. Griff88 (talk) 10:39, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Frankly, i have no problem with the colors except the 2nd one in table, Olive green isn't a great choice, suggesting a change in that color code. If you have more options, please alter it.

& I have no issues with the names of the tournaments, any changes will have my support ✌️  🗿 ZoGlOpHiE 🖋️ 📒

Naming convention

Based on articles created by Lugnuts, user spelled Hans Sperre Jr. with capital letter in junior per WP:JR/SR. But, most of secondary reliable sources spelled as Hans Sperre jr. (examples: [6], [7], [8]), same with Norway Badminton yearbook published by Badminton Europe (see: [9]) and Norway Wikipedia (see: [10]). And for Lee Gwang-jin, do we have to use Lee Gwang-jin or Lee Kwang-jin as the page title? (Griff88, Donaldinyongin, Florentyna, Aleenf1) Stvbastian (talk) 14:33, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Unlike in English, the suffix "Junior" is all small letters in Norwegian. And looks like when we write about someone in English, we will have to use capital "J" as in the correct English style instead of small "j" in their native language. Example of this is Johan H. Andresen Jr. and the Norwegian wiki entry no:Johan H. Andresen jr.. Regarding Lee Gwang-jin, I think we can follow the other Wiki languages that had already used "K" instead of "G" just for consistency. Griff88 (talk) 14:53, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Difficult. All the transliterations for non latin languages like Korean have advantages and disadvantages. I mostly try to capture an image of the person with a name on the shirt when competing and use this version. Junior probably will not have such. The most correct spelling one can probably find in some publications of the Sperre family, or of the club where they are from. --Florentyna (talk) 19:00, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
As for Lee Gwang-jin, Lee Kwang-jin is correct. That is how it was spelled in the 1990s when he was playing and it is the spelling used by the BWF and the IOC. The government has a new Romanization system, that's true but even players who were born since that system was introduced often use non-standard Romanizations. World Badminton magazine issues (1970s-80s)

Hello. Does anyone have access to World Badminton magazine from the 1970s to 1980s? I'm making an article on Claire Backhouse-Sharpe and I haven't been able to confirm that she won two gold medals at the 1978 Pan American Badminton Championships. The Wikipedia article has a lot of blanks in the 1970s and 1980s, and I would like if they were filled in. While I do would like to verify Backhouse-Sharpe's Pan Am medals, it would be nice to see the gaps on these championships filled in as well! Thanks :) --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:53, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

MrLinkinPark333 Unfortunately, there is no archive articles from the International Badminton Federation (now: BWF) at that years. There is a possibility to find that information in subscription site like www.newspapers.com. For another information, you can check in German Wikipedia (see: Claire Backhouse). Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Badminton/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 23:46, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Auto archiving

I've also boldly added some auto archiving to this page, seeing as there are threads here stretching back to 2010. --Tom (LT) (talk) 23:47, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi User:NitinMlk and User:Stvbastian! Too bad I can't help with those AfD, I just saw the 2014 New Zealand GP and it is saddening to see that it is bashed by those who do not have a good understanding of badminton world and deleted... From what I see, the title (which include "Grand Prix") is somehow misleading Google News Search thus making no result due to confusion of other events like New Zealand Grand Prix. And for the often AfD nominated player articles (particularly IS/IC level winners), I think we should not really create the article unless there is another independent source such as the one in Akane Araki. Medal count box for badminton players

Hi Project Badminton Team, can I check if we are allowed to create medal count box in individual player profiles for badminton players as per other sports?

For example:

|- | colspan="3" style="padding:0" |

Event 1st 2nd 3rd
Olympic Games 0 0 1
BWF World Championships 0 0 1
Sudirman Cup 0 1 1
Thomas Cup 0 1 0
Asian Games 0 0 1
Asia Championships 2 1 1
BWF World Junior Championships 0 0 3
Asia Junior Championships 0 0 4
Total 2 3 12

I have been creating medal count box for some badminton players profile(WIP) but there is another wikipedian(from this project) reverting my edits for medal count box citing WP:BADM so I wish to clarify with the team here.

Also, are we allowed to display the Olympic logo using "

" within the profile for players who won olympic medals just underneath the olympic games header for the olympic year and games that they won? Thank you!! Atom105 (talk) 07:54, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

@Atom105, until you edits, there is no badminton related articles used "MedalCount temp" in {{Infobox Badminton player}}. Im not sure why that temp didn't added to the badminton infobox from the beginning, but, i think that temp is redundant or repeating medaltemplates parameter. @User:Aleenf1, User:Zoglophie please give ur oppinion... For Olympic logo, MOS:LOGO said "The insertion of logos as icons into articles is strongly discouraged: While illustration of a logo may be appropriate at the main article on the topic to which the logo pertains, use of logos as icons is not useful to our readers, and often presents legal problems." Stvbastian (talk) 09:19, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

:@Stvbastian I disagree that the medal count infobox template is redundant and it is not repeating information
either. For badminton players with many medals, it is difficult to see at a glance how many type/quantity of medal the players have
without the medal count infobox. Moreover, no other information except(medal count) is repeated as the tournament hyperlinks
besides the medal won(the current format now) links to the individual tournament article for that match. The tournament title
hyperlink for the medal count box links to the general wikipedia article for that tournament and not the individual tournament
matches. This information is useful as it provides a quick link to the various main tournament articles for reader to check on.
Readers who wish to check on the individual tournament match data can click the hyperlink below the medal count infobox as per current format.

Understood with regards to olympic logo legal issue. I agree they are not that useful beside beautifying the infobox. will remove
them once the discussion about the medal count infobox is concluded and we have consensus. Atom105 (talk) 09:36, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

I do not agree with the inclusion of medal count box, especially in badminton blp articles. Not only it cause repitition (medals are already shown in chronology) but also it serves no purpose when there are not very high amount of medals present in infobox. I can agree with inclusion in articles like Michael Phelps where it is difficult to assess the number of medals in infobox. Not the case with badminton. 🌌Zoglophie🌌 10:54, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
There are some badminton players with a high amount of medals(Yuta Watanabe/Chen Long are such examples). It is difficult to see at a glance how many medals they won. In addition as i have said, the medal count info box includes useful information such as the main tournament informations. These links are not in the infobox as per current format(current format links to the individual year tournaments and not the main tournament article) I feel that this is useful. Atom105 (talk) 11:07, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
@Atom105 what do u mean with main tournament? I think, all the major tournaments already including in "medaltemplates" parameter. Stvbastian (talk) 16:27, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
@Stvbastian My apologies. I have re-checked the infobox for badminton players and the main tournament hyperlink is there in the current infobox format. The remaining issue left would be medal count for players with many medals such as Chen Long(for example). Does the WP team feels its really not necessary? As I have said, badminton is the only sports discipline not doing it and it looks weird. Have the WP Team not considered standardization of infobox with the other sports disciplines for general information(medal tally count in this case)?
@Stvbastian,@Zoglophie,@Aleenf1 Its been about a week since we brought this topic up for discussion. Given the current consensus of 2 is to 1 with regards to this medal count box, I have decided to respect the decision of the Team and will refrain from adding or editing the Infoboxes of badminton players at this time. Thanks and good day. Atom105 (talk) 04:08, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Thomas & Uber Cup related articles

Does anyone know whether whether the various "Thomas & Uber Cup" articles (e.g. 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup) are about a single tournament or about two separate tournaments as well as whether the ampersand is part of the official name of the tournament. Ampersands shouldn't generally be used in the titles of articles and headings as well as article prose for the reasons given in MOS:AMP unless they're part of an official name; whether this is the case, however, isn't really clear from denmark2020.dk and bwfthomasubercups.bwfbadminton.com. If the ampersand is part of the official name, then that's fine; if it's not, however, and was just added as a type of shorthand, then some cleanup might be needed for all of the articles listed in Category:Thomas & Uber Cup. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:20, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

What is "Bronze/Final"

Some articles, like Badminton at the 2008 Summer Olympics, use the term "Bronze/Final", but I don't find that in sources. Does it mean something different from "Bronze final", or can I change it to that? Dicklyon (talk) 01:04, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Never mind; clearly it means "Bronze & finals" so I changed to that in the table. Dicklyon (talk) 20:22, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Sorry no one answered you before you made changes. "Bronze/Final" is the match played between the losers of the semi-finals to determine who gets bronze (third place). "Bronze/Final" is perhaps not a good name for it, but I feel "Bronze & finals" is a lot more misleading. --SVTCobra 03:37, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
"Bronze final" is the term for what you're talking about. Here and in a tennis article, "Bronz/Final" in a schedule table was used to indicate that both the bronze final and the final were in the same time slot. Let me know if that's not right on this one. Thanks for replying. Dicklyon (talk) 19:45, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

RFC that could affect this project

There is a titling RFC at Wikipedia talk:Article titles that will affect many articles at this project. There was discussion of making the RfC handled bit by bit before all projects understood the ramifications with entertainment being singled out next in a deleted draft, and other projects after that. Whether you agree or don't agree please join in the discussion for this massive Wikipedia change. Fyunck(click) (talk) 10:43, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

MOS for player biography

Hi, is there any MOS for badminton player's biography article? I noted that some players biography article has the number of titles and runner-up placing besides certain tournaments under achievements such as 2.6 BWF World Tour (7 titles, 7 runners-up) 2.7 BWF Superseries (6 titles, 4 runners-up) 2.8 BWF Grand Prix (2 titles, 3 runners-up) 2.9 BWF International Challenge/Series (9 titles, 5 runners-up). For an active player (especially if they are rather young), this means the section name will keep changing to keep updating. It will certainly be better to keep it to a single line of prose within the section such that the article remains stable (for section name) while content is regularly being updated. Also I feel that that this is WP:UNDUE on the number of titles on section names. So to summarise, (1)is there a MOS to define the sections? and (2)if not, I am proposing not to list the number of titles and runners-up in section names to stablise the article. Thanks. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 02:07, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

@Justanothersgwikieditor: This is how we represent titles in achievement section, i.e. World tour, super series, challenges etc. I do not see a problem with it. Defining each and every tournament in career section with a statement is also next to impossible as there are many players with numerous tournaments in succession. It is also a convenient way and is well defined in the main project page. And for the number of titles, I think @Stvbastian: could possibly suggest something. zoglophie 18:14, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Zoglophie, I think there is a slight misunderstanding in my intention. What I am suggesting is instead of writing the number of titles in the section name, eg 2.8 BWF Grand Prix (2 titles, 3 runners-up), we just write the tournament name 2.8 BWF Grand Prix and in the very first line of the section, so-and-so has won 2 titles and placed runners-up 3 times, etc. With this, we have a stable section structure, any update to number of titles and runners-up will be purely in prose instead of updating section names. Of course, if the preference is to remain as it is, I am fine with it. Thanks! -- Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 00:21, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
