This is the 2nd Archive of Typhoon2013's talk page. Archive 2 includes messages during 2014.

The article Timeline of the 2014 Pacific typhoon season has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This is premature and consists of original research and what appears to be guess work, with no references. If articles such as this, timelines of natural disasters and weather events, are common, this can be properly recreated later in the year, with sources

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. freshacconci talk to me 21:54, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

2014 PTS timeline

There is no need for there to be a timeline of the 2014 PTS yet, as things stand certain users dont like the seasons having timelines yet alone when theres nothing to put in them. If the season deserves a timeline like the 2013 does then we can recreate it later.Jason Rees (talk) 00:09, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 01:44, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Hey there. Could you stop making such short articles that are essentially copies of the season article? If you want to make a sub-article, then there needs to be more information. That was the case for 2013 Pacific typhoon season. You made a bunch of articles, and most of them are still in the same short stubby state as when you first created them. I can help you make them better, but you gotta meet us halfway and put some more effort into them.

I should add, there are a bunch of editors that regularly frequent an online chatroom called Internet Relay Chat. I'm on there, so is Yellow Evan, TheAustinMan, JasonRees, etc. We could help you get your articles off the ground and help you in general as an editor.

Here is the link - Internet Relay Chat - you just enter your user name, put #wiki-hurricanes as the channel, and then enter what you see for the "captcha". If you need any help, let me know, I'd love to have you become more involved in the project! :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:39, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Hey! Sorry I missed you on IRC. I was having lunch then, but I'm glad you found the channel alright :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:45, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Year articles

See WT:YEARS, but I do not believe "Easter Monday" is a significant holiday, and Holy Week is marginal. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 05:54, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Yeah. Easter Monday is more of a Canadian holiday, and even without that, it is already a minor holiday. LightandDark2000 (talk) 10:00, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
OK, then. It is just because its my first time in the Project of Years. Oh and just a tip, it is not just a Canadian holiday, its also here in New Zealand, British and Australia maybe. Typhoon2013 (talk) 21:38, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Remnants of Gillian

Hello, LightandDark2000. A couple of days ago, I just thought that the remnants or the remnant energy of Cyclone Gillian became Cyclone Ivanoe. What do you think? Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:34, 17 April 2014‎ (UTC)

It's possible, but highly unlikely, due to the time span between the 2 storms (6 days), and the lack of references to Gillian in any of Ivanoe's advisories. Unless you find an official source that confirms this, it shouldn't be added to the article. Best regards, LightandDark2000 (talk) 09:07, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Oh, and please remember to sign your post by by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of each of your posts. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk) 10:00, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Things to consider

There is no real need to expand out the information on Hadi's life within the SPAC page, with things that happened while it was out of the basin. Also please note that the JTWC called Hadi a tropical storm, so you shouldnt be doing so.Jason Rees (talk) 22:15, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Typhoon Yolanda (disambiguation) concerning this edit. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. It is not a good idea to simply remove notices added with {{Article for deletion}} templates without ever commenting on the related page. You may in fact have an excellent reason to contest this deletion, but it is essential that you voice this reason. Thank you. Dustin (talk) 21:50, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

TC's

Hi Typhoon2013, I saw your message to both Hurricanehink and LightandDark2000, which asked if we should add in a system from 2005 to the WPAC page. The answer too which is yes - it should be added. However i have too point out to you that "Typhoon 2000" is not PAGASA's wesbite, it is just a reliable source which we can use for various things. If you ever spot a tropical cyclone missing again and have a reliable source, just be bold and add it in.Jason Rees (talk) 01:28, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

PAGASA Tropical Depression 'Michael' of 2005

Hello, LightandDark2000. I found out in the PAGASA's Typhoon2000 log (website: http://www.typhoon2000.ph/season05-3.htm) that there is a storm between Typhoon Kiko and Labuyo (Typhoons Khanun and Damrey). Do you thin we should add this? Please rely :) Typhoon2013 08:16, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Please be aware of something

Information for typhoon-related articles should be based on JMA first, including life span, pressure, etc.. A storm’s main picture should be during or nearing its peak intensity, and a TD picture should not be used for an officially named storm. -- Meow 06:02, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi,

I've noticed a couple of your edit summaries have included statements that may cause peole to think that you have administraor priviliges. For example [1] and [2]. It might be worth using warning templates on user pages that there are issues with rather than including this in edit summaries these can be found here. This will allow other users to see if they have been warned for similar behaviour before as well as preventing people from accusing you of trying to impersonate an administrator (it doesnt appear you are but it may be misinterpreted as such). re: 1993

No problem about the questions! So, you have to find links online and in text in order to cite them. PAGASA naming isn't the best... we don't really know every single named storm, as most sources usually use the international name (which at that time was by JTWC). It's not listed here, which is a list of the damaging Philippine systems, so I'm not really sure. Sorry. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:45, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Please stop messing around with the date Severe Tropical Storm Jebi formed, we go with when the JMA declares a tropical depression in best track. Infobox_typhoon_current

Just as FYI, I've recently completed a merge of the "current" templates into the main one, which now has options to allow tracking of active storms. Going to revert your revert, since the old syntax is now gone. -- Netoholic @ 03:32, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

I have already reverted Typhoon2013's revert. With the templates having been merged, the old syntax is gone. Dustin (talk) 03:34, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
@Netoholic, I think you should fix the new template/infobox again. Something is currently wrong. I was just updating both templates of Rammasun and Matmo from JMA's advisory but it appears out when I clicked save it dramatically changed. Could you fix this immediately please. Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:39, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
I can't do anything as long as User:United_States_Man keeps reverting the changes. I suggest asking him to stop and to use the new documentation I provided for how to use Template:Infobox hurricane on active storms. -- Netoholic @ 02:19, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
No. Myself and others feel that this is doing more bad than good. You are welcome to join the discussion at the project talk page. United States Man (talk) 02:22, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
@Netoholic. Oh, it is OK. I think User:Yellow Evan is fixing it up. But if the template still doesn't work for me and User:Meow, I thin there is going to be a big problem to the new infobox template. Typhoon2013 (talk) 02:26 18 July 2014 (UTC)
Typhoon2013, United States Man reverted all my changes, so you're currently left only with the old templates. I literally can't do anything to help until he let's me restore my update to Template:Infobox hurricane. -- Netoholic @ 03:10, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
@Netoholic, @Dustin. I think the issue of the new infobox is finished. I have already put back the old one. Netoholic, next time if you are going to make a new infobox/template, tell the users or else we would have another of this again. Please do not worry about these issues already, just continue to fix and update tropical cyclones. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:34, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Season Track Summary

Thanks for you messages about Mitag. The problem is that the season summary maps have always used the US 1-minute wind data, using the NRL running tracks as operational data and the JTWC database for post-season analysis. Despite your opinions of me, I wasn't involved when the West Pacific tracks were first generated (around 2006), but no doubt the intention was to keep the track maps for different basins compatible (Atlantic tracks seen to have been done first and could only use 1-minute winds), and to make use of the longest running database then available (i.e. JTWC). Cyclonebiskit's update to Mitag uses JMA 10-minute data, unlike any other map on this page, and while the colors may not be any different in this case I don't want to start a precedent by bringing this data onto the season summary map.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 08:51, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

TD and dissipation

A tropical depression is considered as an active tropical cyclone in Wikipedia. JMA only downgraded Rammasun to a TD, so it is still active. Once it degenerated to a LPA or disappeared according to JMA’s high seas report, it officially dissipates. -- Meow 02:02, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

East Pacific Seasonal Track Maps

Hi,

From what I recall (it's been a while :P), the issue with Peke's track was that it cut off at the International Date Line as the EPac dataset for Peke did not extend into its West Pacific phase. I'll fire up the track map generator and see if I can get a better quality track for 1987 (your version is a bit blurry) as well as update 1990 and 1991 with the modern color scheme.

Have a nice day! — Iune(talk) 03:04, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

2003 PTS

Hey there. I hope you don't mind, but I reverted your edit to the 2003 PTS article. There is no need for minor short-lived depressions to get full sections. They make the article unnecessarily long and don't add anything other than an unneeded infobox. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:53, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Yea, in general, the PAGASA depressions probably don't need their own section. Granted, some, like Winnie 04, would warrant one due to their impact. But most are short-lived, weak, and not that damaging, so those ones definitely don't need their own section. It just adds unnecessary space to the article. Hope you understand :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:54, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Re: Wikipedia

Hey there! Congrats on being around almost an entire year.

  • First, I notice you update your user page a lot. Maybe it's just this month, but that definitely doesn't need to be a big of a focus. Also, I noticed - "You are free to look at it but not to edit it, of course." That isn't actually correct. Your user page is a Wikipedia page, which is still bound to the rules of the website, meaning others could edit if they wanted (For example, if they saw a typo, or one of the user boxes got deleted). That's kind of calling people out to edit your page, when it's not really necessary :P People understand that user pages are primarily done by you and shouldn't be edited unless for good reason.
  • Second, I notice you're starting to dabble with making more articles. That's great! However, if you want to be a better user, you should work on expanding them more, so they're more in line with existing good articles in whatever basin you work in. For example, the Kalmaegi article you started would probably not have been merged if you had a good two paragraphs of information for impact, and an expanded meteorological history. It doesn't do any good for Wikipedia if you simply split off the information from the season article, as Wikipedia just has two copies of the same information without anything additional. Try doing more research through Google and Google News. You'll be surprised how much you can add!
  • Third, the main reason no one is editing 2014 PTS articles is that this is a record season for the eastern Pacific, so there is a lot of attention on those articles. However, that is the case for most years, as generally the Atlantic gets more attention during the year since it's closer to home for many users.
  • Fourth, I think it's way too early to think about adminship. The biggest thing for that is that you need to take drive and become a leader. You need to be able to take care of situations and find problems where some might not know they exist.
  • Regarding the button bar, there's no right or wrong answer. If there was only one more storm in this PTS, for example, then it would be silly to have three lines. But if there is enough for three lines, then make them all even.
  • Lastly, this is just my opinion, but it'd be great if you became the go to user for the PTS. Right now, we have certain users who focus more on some basins than others (for example, I do a lot of work in the south-west Indian, Jason Rees usually works in the South Pacific). We have a large number of stubby or poorly done articles in the western Pacific. That would help the project the most, if you were helping to get the articles to GA in the basin. No pressure, but that would be a really great help :)

Feel free to reply here. I have your talk page watched. Take care. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:38, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, for not replying @Hurricanehink: since I have a project to do at school, editing information about Kalmaegi and waiting for PAGASA to name the new storm (which already is now). Thank you for this information and I will try to do this. Just saying that my school term ends next week so I can be in Wikipedia and talk pages in a lot of time from September 28 to October 12. I will try to chat to you tomorrow in the Wiki relay chat at 04utc if possible. Typhoon2013 23:00, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
No prob! As for Fung-Wong, yea, it's appropriate for almost any landfalling storm in a populated area to get an article. Good job adding info to it already. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:26, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Hey there! First, I don't think you should be advertising your age on your user page, but that's not why you messaged me :P If you can prove that the 8 deaths are unrelated to the other 4 deaths, then yes, the total should be 12. Ideally, you should find a source saying there were 12 deaths overall. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:47, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Yep, as long as you have a source that explicitly says the storm caused the deaths, then it can be added. Nice find, ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:43, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi!

I was that random unregistered user that added info to Tropical Storm Vongfong. I created an account now. :D I love severe weather and hurricanes. Anyway, thanks for redoing it to have it done correctly, I tried to do it the best I could, since an empty space was kind of annoying, lol. However, mind updating Phanfone's "story", too. I'm pretty sure it underwent an eyewall replacement cycle, which would make sense as to why it momentarily weakened. If you know of any sources that say this, then please add it, otherwise maybe just say that it weakened slightly or such. Wow, that's an amazing looking storm, though! HurricaneRaindrop57 (talk) 04:23, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Reply to invitation: I'm not planning on being on all that much, but I'll accept. I'll probably just come on occasionally when there's a good hurricane/typhoon that seems like it will hit something. :P And thanks for the sources! :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by HurricaneRaindrop57 (talkcontribs) 04:50, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Rethoughts, I've decided not to continue editing, but for certain reasons.

So, I've rethought things, and I've decided that although I love hurricanes and such, I also don't want to miss out on real life. Although that was a great chat and all, I'll likely not continue editing, as the last time I did this I got addicted. So even though I'd love to be part of contributing, I have too much to lose. I'm sorry, but I don't want to miss out on real life, where I really should be, perhaps even eventually really seeing the storms from inside. Thanks for adding the info though. I guess I just wanted to try editing here, and although it might be a fun hobby, it would mess up my life on the outside. You can remove my name from the list too. It's a yes or no choice, to keep editing or not, and I've decided no. Thank you for the invite for the cyclone project, but you can remove my name now. I just hope you understand that I'm not trying to be a troll or anything, I just don't want to get absorbed, and end up being defined by one word: "Average". And I've also figured out one thing - hurricanes, to experience them, need to be seen for real. Sorry if you already do that, not really a tip then. But, if you don't already, maybe you could eventually study hurricanes in real life! :) Goodbye, HurricaneRaindrop57 (talk) 05:40, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for understanding.

Thank you for understanding. And thank you for being so helpful on here! Instead of just undoing my edit and leaving it, you corrected it. And also, thank you for being so helpful and kind! Have a good time, weather it be editing or anywhere. (Pun intended!) Saying goodbye, HurricaneRaindrop57 (talk) 05:59, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Sourcing

You should not be using either Western Pacific Weather or Nasa for details about any Pacific typhoons, as they are not reliable enough nor are they official. What you should be doing is using the JTWC Prognostic Reasoning's, Significant tropical weather advisories, in addition to the JMA advisories, these are available on their websites and archived on the talk page. Do not let me catch you using NASA or Western Pacific Weather again to try and source meterological details.Jason Rees (talk) 11:27, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

@Meow: I thought that the image was a little bit small. I tried it in the normal infobox. So that's why I stretched it out a bit. - Typhoon2013 07:17, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@Typhoon2013: Well, in this case, the picture has contained enough contents, as it includes Vongfong’s main circulation completely and still has some spaces. Anyway, that is the limit of MODIS. -- Meow 07:25, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@Meow: Ok, then. Do you want to chat tomorrow in the Internet Relay Chat because I don't want to leave too many messages on your talk page, hehe. If it is OK for you. - Typhoon2013 07:28, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@Typhoon2013: I may have a meeting tomorrow. I have already postponed it due to Typhoon Vongfong. -- Meow 07:34, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@Meow: I am available on Thursday and Friday. Also I am still up until midnight (NZT) because I am going to sight-see the eclipse. I am available on these times if you need me or leave a message about something. - Typhoon2013 07:40, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Cyclone Hudhud

I see you reverted my edits on Hudhud. But why don't we need the template for the North Indian Ocean Storms? We do that for all other northern hemisphere basin (I don't know about southern hemisphere, because I haven't experienced tracking them yet) but not for the Indian Ocean. May I know why? Besides, the template also works for Indian Ocean. So I do not know why we don't put templates on Indian Ocean storms. Please clarify. Damien4794 (talk) 00:13, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Re: anon

Hey there. I'm not really sure what to do. It looks like a lot of the edits are legit. Instead of warning about blocking, why not try asking that IP address to create an account and work with him/her? You catch more flies with honey, not vinegar :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:01, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Try this new approach of being nice to the anon, see if that changes anything. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:45, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Edit warring

Dude, I know you have administrator ambitions, but you really can't become one if you can't learn to use the talk page of an article. If three separate people revert you, then chances are you might be in the wrong. I'm not sure why you're so obsessed with this storm, but you can't let obsession drive your editing habits. I opened up a discussion on the talk page, which is what you should do in the future in cases of dispute. You shouldn't use edit summaries to explain your changes, and it shouldn't be split over multiple user talk pages. Always use the article talk page. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:31, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

To be completed...

I think this covered by my previous response at User talk:Typhoon2013/Archive2#Season Track Summary.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 17:12, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

The "NASA prediction"

This fake prediction has already been thoroughly debunked in 2012 when it originally appeared (with the date 2012-12-21 known for another public hysteria event), no need to proliferate silly hoaxes in an encyclopedia. You can read more about it here. — Yerpo Eh? 09:28, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Re: Do we still need it?

It's needed for visually impaired people in case they cannot see the colors properly. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:40, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

As of is not analysis time

As of for a tropical cyclone means when it presents the intensity and location, not an agency analyses the system. I have mentioned this many times, and I do not want to remind you anymore. Do not let me see this happen from you. -- Meow 03:42, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
