Greetings, Todor. First of all, thanks for the details on the article. Now, for some criticism: I notice that, quite a lot of times, you insert your references in texts using a certain format, regardless of what format the texts already use. I have absolutely no problem with that format, as long as it has all the relevant data mentioned, but using several formats in the same place not only looks sloppy, it also gives other editors something to do that they rather wouldn't (i.e., unify the formats - in this case, it was me). I understand that you're most comfortable with that format (even though I find it very restrictive myself), and I certainly don't expect you to format all other references when you're just inserting one, but wouldn't it save us all a lot of work if you just go with what's in the text? This also goes for your use of Cyrillic, which seems to be adapted to Bulgarian wiki formats but doesn't really make sense over here: sure we shouldn't transliterate the title, but it should be implied that we transliterate author, publishing house and city.
Also, there seems to be another problem with one of the sources, and I think it's quite serious: yes, the book you link to may have been published, but the domain is a personal page, and this fails WP:RS.
Now, there's another thing that bugs me. Even if you gave the complete reference details for one source, another one was incomplete (and the order you used elsewhere reversed), while the other one (Thomas Tartler & Josef Trausch) simply lists no relevant details other than title and authors (what about year? publisher? page?!). I suspect the explanation here is that you simply copied the reference not from the original work, but from a secondary source - when I tried to fill in the publishing details, I came upon this (it cites the text and the book exactly as your addition does). I would say "why not just cite the secondary source?", but, really, to what measure is this a reliable source? Dahn (talk) 23:04, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well, Todor, you can probably tell I wouldn't be as pedantic if I didn't actually care about having a uniform and coherent text. For starters, there were some differences in the citation styles, which made the end result look patchy and inconsistent (as I have suggested before, I'm not imposing on others to care about that, and I understand that they don't, but someone has to if the article can expect to go places). I did take the liberty to format them according to what was already there (the simplest way).
- Please note that I was not proposing adding your notes under references - I also go with "cited once, goes under notes", all for the sake of clarity.
- I take your word on the reliability of one source (what surprised me most is that the two online sources seem to replicate each other (check out the address for this link). And so what if the other was published online? It's a personal page (doesn't matter who the person is), meaning that it's either self-promotional or a crying-to-God copyvio. I have no problem with the source itself (meaning that I do not pronounce a view on source reliability when I don't understand the language), but the link had to go, and I removed it.
- All in all, I don't want to seem like I'm "on your case". I have enjoyed your contributions whenever I got a chance to read them, and I'm particularly fond of the new trend whereby some of my favorite Bulgarian and Romanian editors discuss freely and amiably their common historical heritage and the traditional exaggerations on both sides. Thank you for the kind remarks about my contributions, though I'm sure I don't deserve them. One of the great things about this pan-Eastern European reaching-out is that we have a chance to accomplish not only more cooperative efforts than was the norm in our history, but also more than what happens on other sections of wikipedia (I've seen this happening in the Hungarian-Romanian equivalent, but activity among the former group of editors is, alas, sporadic).
Indeed, I did not object to the sources and did not remove them (if anything, because I have full confidence in your competence and power to discern). The problem was with the links, and I'm glad we came to an understanding. About the Cyrillic spelling: your approach is reasonable, but I still find it inconsistent (still, I won't press the matter further).
I am sure that one day you'll add 
Romania to your collection of those you visited on Earth. Perhaps then you'd get too see the Black Church entry - it's really not that impressive up close, but the church itself is pretty intimidating; in nay case, if you're ever forced to chose between Braşov and Sibiu, I strongly recommend Sibiu. As for the traditional monasteries and churches: I like many of them myself, but the style can get unnerving - they're copying it in every new church nowadays, and, where there were already too many churches around, they're building one every time a pimple is cured or a pup is born (this also means that churchgoers have come to prefer shiny new things, so they either leave some of the old ones to cave in or, which is even worse, "improve" the old in some intrusive way or another).
But perhaps this is a good place and time to let you in on some "secrets" of my own. For starters, one of my maternal great-grandfathers was half-Bulgarian (born in Bulgaria, actually), and all my maternal family hails from an area where Bulgarians and Romanians lived side by side (incidentally, my Bulgarian great-grandfather was in denial, probably because he was an orphan raised by his relatives in Romania - did his best to forget Bulgarian and was quoted by my elders saying that, had he known what part of him was Bulgarian, he would have chopped it off). Amusingly, although they never spoke Bulgarian or anything, some of his descendants have inherited the "inverted" nods for yes and no, which they alternate with the "normal" ones - picture what comes out of this. On the other hand, my Bulgarian great-grandfather's son-in-law (my grandfather), from a Romanian family, always had a special love for Bulgaria, which he visited over and over again, where he made friends, and which he wanted to see cooperating with Romania in every way possible (even within a Balkan Federation). I have visited Bulgaria only once, a rather long time ago (though I have friends who go there almost every year); I was impressed with magnificent Plovdiv, but I also found that Bucharest does not compare with Sofia (our capital has grown ugly, dirty, flashy, exhausting and aggravating; yours I remember as pretty, clean, decent, refreshing and quiet). - Hm, where were we? Sorry, I tend to drift out now and then, looking for those sparkling articles to edit :). And then it takes me a while to get back where I left off.
- You mentioned Southern Dobruja, and I have to say that, for all the things conservative Romanians will say, that area had no business being Romania's in the first place - meaning that whatever criterion (faulty or acceptable) Romanian nationalism used for its irredenta does not even begin to apply in its case. One could also argue that Romanians were aware of this being the case, proof of this being the Treaty of Craiova. Northern Dobruja was also gained through imperialism, only it wasn't our imperialism, it was theirs :). It would be interesting to track down what Romanian newspapers had to say about the region back in 1878 - stuff like "why would we want this barren piece of nowhere instead of our beautiful Budjak? etc." Of course, camping out by the sea every summer made up for the insult, and that's how it became "the land granted to Romanians by Mircea blah blah blah". Then again, it was probably for the best that the Turks and Tatars in both regions didn't have to go through what happened to Muslims in Bulgaria - yes, I do think that was one of the most shameful things to have happened in the Balkans during the post-1950 period. I'm not one to fantasize about Balchik (much of the palace area looks like kitsch to me), but maybe the Romanian presence did at least create an interesting island of, well, originality - and that originality may be worth preserving, against the assimilationist trends on either side of any Balkan border (Romanian borders included).
- I'd still wager that Sofia is far better off than Bucharest. If anything, because Zhivkov was only half as insane as Ceauşescu. And the Dimitrov Mausoleum was not half as contemptible as the Palace o the Parliament - or, at least, you were able to tear it down after some trial and failure. Whatever new developments seem unbearable about Sofia, Bucharest builds on top of that massive skeletons in its closet. And I miss overcrowded buses... in Bucharest, cars top on pile of each other and suffocate the city, because every nitwit who can pass a driving test will now aim for a Humvee. And then the Vitosha. Consider that the highest lookout point in Bucharest is this wee pile. But then again, I grew up in hill country.

I don't know Wikipedia policy (whether or not to mention other names, in what criteria) when a place has different names in various languages. If you are talking about 8% Turkish population then the Romanian name should not have mentioned in the first place. bulgarian sources[edit]
Hello MR Bozhinov, the bulgarian editors seem to be full of ethnographic materials from the early 20th century regarding Macedonia. I was wondering is you have any information on the village of "Katafygi/Katafigi/Katafigion" amongst the old turn of the century publications. If so, does the text mention the ethnicities present in the village at that time. The village was just excluded from V.Kanchovs Macedonia;Ethnography and Statistics report of 1900. As you can see the village is v. close to Mount Olympus and Vlaholivadon. He apparently spoke another language, this may in fact be true and turn out to be Aromanian. Not at all: Ioannina had an Albanian population, till 1923. If you know greek, you can see the official site of the municipality, in the history section, which speaks about this albanian population (not to mention other NPOV sources). Secondly, Ioannina was part of what was called Ottoman Albania by Encyclopedia Brittanica 11th edition (you can check it there). Ioannina was part of Pashalik of Janina, ruled by albanians. Ioannina had its delegates in the Albanian Declaration of Independence#Delegates. I have to look on them. Qind in albanian means one hundred and it is used as qind-arka which means cent. Buka is bread, keq in albanian means bad, and qelesh in gegh albanian is used for a lot of things that derive from wool. But, I cannot help you if these are the roots of the bulgarian words, because I have no book of it and most of all I do not know the words` evolution in Bulgarian, i.e. if these albanian words may be transformed in the meshtreski words, according to bulgarian phonetic rules.Balkanian`s word (talk) 16:18, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

New Bulgarian municipality templates[edit]
Hi there! I've recently created Wikipedia:WikiProject Bulgaria/Municipal templates in a drive to build a detailed guide to Bulgaria by municipality by adding villages, notable landmarks, people and culture from each municipality. Please follow Template:Smolyan as a guideline and help get Bulgaria covered in detail in this way. I am creating the bones of the templates first but I will need help placing the notable articles into each new municipality template and then of course starting the missing articles we have for each of them in abundance. Greeks names[edit]
Hello The greek names that i added in some Bulgarian cities they're not inapropriate at all. It's just the official greek name of the city, how they call it in Greece. And it's common to add the name of a place of a neighbor country in use. And that because of the historical value of some etymologies, not some "nationalistic agenda". It's so sad to think like that! I am interested in putting the South Slavic names for Xanthi, Myki, Kotyli, Alexandroupoli, Amaxades after all the people there are Pomaks who speak the Pomak language. I mean we all know that they speak bulgarian and you know that in West Macedonia, the Macedonian language is spoken. - I find that very strange coming from you. But it is a linguistic fact that the "pomak language" is merely a dialect of Bulgarian, and should be treated as such. In the same way the "slavic dialects of greece" are dialects of the Macedonian language. These are both linguistic facts. One does not need to speak the "codified" language to have the language spoken in that area. Do you really think that in most areas of ROM the codified language is spoken? What is wrong with "south slavic" and "local slavic" , they are not languages and rather a POV push by certain users to dissaciate the respective languages from bulgarian in the east and macedonian in the west. Who says I have nothing to do with western thrace, by the same logic you have nothing to do with west greek macedonia. Funnily enough the name was agreed to by both ROM users and Greek users, you objection is interesting to me. Are the dialects spoken in west greek macedonia, not dialects of the macedonian language? - You really think that i am so irrendentist, dont you. Where the language spoken by the locals is clearly macedonian i really cannot see why you must add bulgarian names. I am not talking about places in serres, drama, kavala prefectures, but in florina, kastoria, pella and imathia prefectures where the language is clearly macedonian. It seems very ridiculous to outside users, (this is why it got the lamest cultural/ethnic disputes), that we cant even agree on what langauge it is. Linguistically it is Macedonian, in the past it was known as Bulgarian. I am well aware of that. Today it is Macedonian, we agreed on Macedonian Slavic, as a compromise. It would be like adding Macedonian toponyms alongside bulgarian ones, for blagoevgrad and petric and sandanski. Something which shouldnt be done because in those towns the people are in fact Bulgarians and not ethnic Macedonians. It will be interesting to see if my people really exist or we are just some or your lot. Remember it is Bulgarian here but not here. From my parents and grandparents, I have been told that our language is Bulgarian and not "Macedonian". Indeed, the Kostur dialect has many east Bulgarian features. - Well, I haven't looked much into the AfD itself, but next time in such a situation you may want to raise the issue of closure with the closing administrator and ask for userfication by them. Translations[edit]
Hello Todor
I would like to translate a few pages about Bulgaria from English into Russian. I don't understand Russian myself (and only have editing of English pages activated), but I do have a Russian translator who can do the translations. What is the best way I can get the Russian translations entered?
I tried asking this question on my talk page and they suggested talking to the Russian group, but I am not sure how to do this. Am I right in thinking you are responsible for Bulgarian topics? Is this page the best way to communicate?

hi, apart from the open debate as to whether "Grecoman" was/is most often used in a pejorative way i think you should reword that part leaving the term out, solely based on the bias to be expected from Bulgarian sources regarding this specific characterization my request should be reasonable. I can't evaluate the references myself, so please judge from the context and re-phrase (or at least omit what those people were exactly). Thanks. --Zakronian (talk) 22:27, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

- Well first of all for the specific event mentioned in the article i don't have a strong opinion over how those people could be described, having no knowledge or access to sources about it. As a general note i believe there are two problems with the term being used in wikipedia: 1) it has a rather vague meaning (at least outside the ethnic perspectives that introduced it). In fact if one reads the target article he might come to the conclusion that "Grecoman" is by definition linked with those POVs and expect to find it only where such a view is described.
- 2) Even if i was wrong and it actually had an established narrow meaning in the English speaking world other then the above it should be sourced accordingly with third party sources. I for once don't expect to find many situations where independent sources make such distinctions/definitions in the ethnic soup of the late Ottoman period in Macedonia. Counting some notable exceptions (and common pejorative use) out, i imagine it being usefull mainly for having a "clean" narrative in national historical perspectives. It's a wider problem, defining ethnicity in general in that region, you have the language element, and the often rotating political/religious affiliations and self identifications.
- "pro-Greek Slavophones" or "pro-Greek Vlachs" are rough examples of a more neutral description, but i believe you should quote unbiased sources even for those. But it's really a case by case situation here, say for instance that we have a neutral source defining a group in question as Bulgarian or Slav mercinaries/bandits in the Greek payroll (how many are those clean-cut cases really ?), what's wrong with mentioning just that ?
- Lastly, regarding the offensiveness of the term, my request wasn't based primarily on this. As a personal note (of limited value) the sadest thing about it is that it still divides families with a Slavophone/Slavic background. Thanks again.--Zakronian (talk) 18:54, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
