Thank you!!!

Thank you for helping out with stopping the debate at Talk:FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman! I am creating the template Nofuture so that edtiors will know not to add Season 6 information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hidividedby5 (talkcontribs) 13:29, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Care to review this? There are threads related to it on the article talk page, User talk:Viriditas, User talk:Maile66, and User talk:Wildhartlivie. Jack Merridew 18:07, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, this is a totally uncontroversial improvement. That WHL took it as yet another opportunity to accuse you of stalking is a bit depressing of course. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 19:38, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks; glad someone sees these issues. Cheers, Jack Merridew 23:26, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

renaming of "Image:" to "file:"

Hello Thumperward, I just noticed you've been renaming the way images are included in Trans fat but I can't see any justification for that. Is this some new WP policy or something? Cheers, pgr94 (talk) 10:56, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

"file" is the new name for the namespace: go to any image page and you'll see that it's preceded by "file:" now and not "image:". Unifying articles to use "file" consistently helps when searching for media on pages in edit mode. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:12, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
First time I came across this change. Thanks for the explanation. pgr94 (talk) 11:49, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Pat Smear

The lead paragraph of this article describes the important elements to the article accurately and concisely. From a journalistic sense it hits each of the key notable points in the subsequent article; why he is known--guitarist, and the three famous bands he has been a guitarist for. Subsequently he appeared as a regular in a TV show. There is nothing else he has done on the same level of notoriety. The lead sentence of his "recent activity" even says: "Since leaving the Foo Fighters, Smear kept a fairly low profile." All of his other accomplishments, the details of each of his performing stints with those bands and the appearance in the TV show are covered in the subsequent article. There is no underlying scandal, no notorious incidents worthy of being included in the lead. Stretching the lead paragraph simply for length sake is improper and unsound. Placing a demanding tag on the article defaces its worth.Trackinfo (talk) 15:06, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't agree with a word of that, but I suppose I'll have to work on it myself. Sigh. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 15:07, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Similar Treatment

I see that you disagree with WP:Similar treatment is okay . Note that the converse is very bad. A WP:Uneven and arbitrary treatment is OK is very bad. Thank you for not being savage and trying to attack the essay. The similar treatment essay was written in good faith and does make sense. It says to try to act fairly but does not measure every millimeter to require it. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 19:54, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Oh, don't get me wrong: I think that it's a valid line of thought. The reason that it's a minority position is that it's massively complicated in practice and would lead to endless wikilawyering over precedent. But there's nothing wrong with advancing it in an essay. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 08:23, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Claude Anelka

Sorry. It was late, I was tired, and I'd already made 4-5 changes with a reference; I just forgot to hit Ctrl-V to put the reference in on that edit. Won't happen again. --JonBroxton (talk) 15:44, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

No worries. Thanks for the update anyway: Claude Anelka is still a bit of a legend here for his time at Raith, so nice to keep up with him. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 21:22, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Quick Question

I was just going to ask a quick question about player Honours within their respective articles. If a player plays in earlier rounds of a tournament and does not play in the final then should that particular honour be listed if his / her team wins? It was just that in the article Martin Keown this exact case applies and I was going to remove the Cup winners cup in 1994 from his list but thought I had better check to get a second opinion in case a similar instance occurs.

It might be the case that Uefa gives the club a certain number of medals for players that played in the tournament but were not selected for the final, but in an encyclopedia sense I think that it should go by only the squad for the final? Monkeymanman (talk) 16:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

By medals. By definition, a medal is an "honour". Thus you get Lionel Messi being listed with two Champions League wins when he was injured for the final the first time. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 16:53, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
So it is policy that if a the player actually gets onto the pitch at some point during the competition and his team wins the final then that should be listed on his honours. Or is it only if they were expected to play the final? For example Darren Fletcher missed the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final through suspension but would of been expected to play and played in several of the matches of that years competition, should he be listed on his honours as having won the competition? Monkeymanman (talk) 17:09, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Also i tried to add a welcome bar with links to this users talk page but have messed up doing something and cannot figure out what. Cheers Monkeymanman (talk) 17:09, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Pretty sure that Fletcher has a winners' medal for it, yes. At least that's how it worked out with Messi. You'd probably need to check on an individual basis. I've fixed the welcome template: looks like the table wasn't closed. Did you get that from a template? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 17:41, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
I might raise it with the project to see what the majority view on the honours aspect for each player is, because it is a bit vague and different across footballers on wikipedia.
I altered the welcome box that had been placed on my own, and copied it onto that one. Monkeymanman (talk) 20:22, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

I've mentioned the above wikiproject and template as well as a whole category of templates at:

which is a sort of workshop for an RfC (or multiple RfCs) concerning the whole issue of colour use, and wikiproject authority. I see you're most recent editor to the template (well, a move) and am letting you know; a few other interested parties, too. And, of course, you're involved in the filmography template, too. Cheers, Jack Merridew 22:42, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

p.s. The multi-image template seems to have sorted, although I never quite saw what the renewed-clipping issue was; too damn busy.

Not only that, but I'm presently involved in a request to get the sky blue background on the Comics templates removed. Let me know if there's anything specific I should bring up. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:07, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Nathan Fillion Lead Section Tag

Hi, you added a tag to Fillion's article about the lead section. I'm having some trouble understanding when the lead section should be tagged. I've looked at the guidelines, and I can see that the size of the Fillion article doesn't correlate to the number of paragraphs in the lead. But there are many articles like that. I'm not sure what would be useful to add to the lead section. The only other alternative would be to decrease the body size, not something I relish doing because it means deleting other editors' work. Or, of course, to remove the tag, which would be my choice. :-) I'd like your thoughts. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:18, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

It's one sentence long. It contains one word ("Canadian") to cover the entire first section of the article, completely ignores 90% of his acting roles, and says nothing of the "Projects" section either. Ledes are not supposed to be exercises in brevity; they should summarise all of an article's key points rather than doing the bare minimum to provide context, as this one currently does. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:12, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
I've seen lots of leads just as short as Fillion's, but that, of course, doesn't make it right. So, I added a good bit more to the lead and removed the tag. Take a look and see if you agree.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:56, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Great work! Yeah, that looks fine. Thanks! Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 08:20, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

WH40k:DMO

Oh okay, I didn't know how to do that ( I actually didn't know until later there was an article on the 40k MMO, because it had no formal title yet.) Vechs (talk) 17:46, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

No problem: we've all got to learn some time I suppose. :) No hard feelings, it's fixed now. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 17:48, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

PBSKIDS

Hello Thumperward, thank you for your contributions on articles related to PBS Kids. I'd like to invite you to become a part of Wikipedia:WikiProject PBSKids, a WikiProject aimed at improving the quality of PBS Kids articles on Wikipedia. If you would like to participate, please visit the project page for more information. Thanks!

Hi Thumperward. You uploaded this file a few days ago, but something appears messed-up since it appears on pages with a "file not found" type symbol, which you have to click on to get to work. I don't know anything about the way files work on here or I'd go ahead and fix it myself. ThemFromSpace 05:09, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

I've seen this before, and someone fixed it when I brought it up on the Village Pump so I've asked there again. See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#File:Information processing system (english).svg. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:18, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Would you be willing to try to fix the multiple image template at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (St. Marys, Ohio)? I added it before your recent edits to the template, and now I'm not sure how to get the text to display without making a line break after "standing". Nyttend (talk) 12:02, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure how you mean: the text displays normally for me if I remove the line break. Are you saying that the text is not appearing at all, or that the output isn't right? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:10, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Helen Bamber article

Hi Thumperward. I saw your tagging today for the Helen Bamber article. You have added that the tone is not appropriate. It says there is more info on the talk page, but there is nothing there that I can see. Could you explain what is off about the tone? Please feel free to change it and extend the lead. Look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes Spanglej (talk) 20:57, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

There's a rather heavy editorial tone pervading the whole article at present, most noticably in the "Family and early life" and "Passion" sections. The prose needs to be checked to ensure that it is neutral and that the personal interpretations of the editors do not show through. I'll try to work on this myself anyway. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 21:18, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Hi, I made some edits re the tone tag - I imagine it is no longer needed. Also moved the "Character / passion" section of the Helen Bamber article to the discussion page re WP:BLP - 'sensitivity' and being 'conservative'. I understand that Bamber herself has challenged the article and does find material contentious, so this seems the right move re good faith and respect. Nearly all the article comes directly from interviews with her and is written from using direct quotes from Bamber. What do you think? Best wishes Spanglej (talk) 02:04, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Looks great: thanks! I've removed the tags. Thanks for all your work. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:09, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Plath

Hi Thumperward, as I mentioned - The heading "Biography" is apt for the narrative description of her life - early years, college life, death. There is a section on Works including impact and critique of Plath's publications. If the photos are at automatic size then Hughes' head is larger than the Fitzroy Square house. It seems appropriate to re-size the images accordingly. Best wishes Spanglej (talk) 22:47, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

As Father Ted once said: "these are small: the ones out there are far away". It is unlikely that a reader will become confused by a photo of a house being smaller than a portrait. making images smaller does our readers a disservice. If you look at the prevailing style of our best biographies, very few of them use sections entitled "biography" because, as I said, this is nonsensical. Would you have a chapter of a paper biography entitled "Biography" itself? I'll take this to the talk page, as I think that these changes should be undone. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 23:00, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Samuel Johnson, Samuel Beckett and Albert Einstein use the heading "Biography". William Butler Yeats, Philip Larkin, Charles Dickens and Emily Dickenson use "Life". As 'biography' means 'the study of a life' it really makes no odds to me. Does "Life" work better for you? Whatever works. In terms of images -It wasn't an arbritary edit and it wasn't so much an issue of confusing the reader. At auto size Hughes' large scowling head is the bigger than the house. It looks daft to me and disproportionate in terms of page design. Those were the reasons. No biggie. Spanglej (talk) 17:16, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Replied on talk. Thanks. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 21:39, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

The Template:GrandSlamTournamentsDisciplines does not meet consensus to the other slam articles with the terms to color bars and have the official web as part of the bar like the way you have it, so I will be reverting your edit till you can figure out how to do it the right way, not the wrong one!69.137.121.17 (talk) 15:17, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Assuming that this IP is Bluedogtn: you really need to stop edit warring over templates. If you're not capable of figuring out how to make these changes yourself then you should be trying to cooperate with editors who do, rather than annoying them. If this continues I will be suggesting a topic ban for you from templatespace, as this has gone on for long enough. The "consensus" in question has not been linked to and is certainly not consistently used throughout tennis infobox templates. If you can point me to a discussion which contradicts this then I'll be happy to cooperate, but if not then I'll be reverting this again, and I do not expect you to edit war over this again. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 15:55, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Can you make it where the color displays correctly in order to identify each unique slam event and discipline and finals, that is all I am asking and put the official web back to where it belongs! I don't want to get into anymore name calling like you do to me everytime.BLUEDOGTN 16:35, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
If you don't want to get into "name calling", then stop edit warring. It's high time that you took some responsibility for the actions which have led to so many people opposing your edits. I still don't see any evidence of consensus for the requested changes and they're certainly not consistent with the way most of the tennis infoboxes are laid out. I've posted on the talk page for further input; should there be none I'll be deploying the sandbox code. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 21:23, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Skype

You might note that at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Phil Spector, also introduced some extraneous text around some numerical characters. This may be due to a combination of your browser and Skype trying to identify and highlight telephone numbers. Thank you.--Rumping (talk) 22:05, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Argh. Thanks - I've disabled the Skype Firefox addon now, but obviously that was what had caused it. Cheers for the heads-up! Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 22:09, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Hennessy

Some research should be done. HENNESSY is the correct, original spelling as in the Cognac company which this page links to!!

HENNESSEY is a later Anglicised version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.84.185.74 (talk) 13:54, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

It's a proper noun. How it was originally spelled is not necessarily how it is "properly" spelled. As the rest of your current edits are blatantly unproductive, I'm not likely to consider this one to have been made in good faith. Please stop now. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:01, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
It links to a page about COGNAC....HENNESSY COGNAC with No "E"
HENNESSY is NOT an alternative spelling. It is the correct spelling! The E was added by the bigoted English who misspelled every other Irish name and mistakenly believed that English words required an "E" before the "Y".
How much clearer do you need it to be? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.84.185.74 (talk) 14:07, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Regardless of the origin, for those who use the alternative spelling it is the "correct" one. You might as well argue about what the "correct" spelling of "Shakespear" is. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:11, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
It links to the HENNESSY page. End of story. And the thing about Spanish Flea is a fact. I can send you a video! I'll bet you are humming the tune right now! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.84.185.74 (talk) 14:13, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
It's not a "fact" worthy of an encyclopedia. Continue to edit disruptively and you'll end up getting blocked. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:14, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Template:Infobox election

Hello there. Thank-you for cleaning up the Template:Infobox election. But when editing a template with wide usage, please make test edits to the sandbox. That way if there are any errors, they won't be seen on the many pages, and there aren't multiple edits in a row (I think I look like a genius when I make one massive rewrite). I also have a query, do you know why there is a problem when there is only one candidate? I am worried it may need a lengthy read through and/or massive rewrite, which I don't have the time for. Thanks again, 117Avenue (talk) 06:00, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Most of the changes in question were simple style tweaks, and it's far quicker to test them on the live template; it occasionally causes fallout, yes, but only briefly. For bigger changes I usually sandbox. I'll have a look into the whitespace problem; I know what's probably causing it, and had a fix half rolled out yesterday but didn't go ahead with it. Cheers.
