list of inequalities[edit]

Hello. I just added several articles you created to the list of inequalities. If there are others that should be there, could you add them? Thanks. Michael Hardy 00:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brascamp-Lieb inequality[edit]

I was amazed to find your article on the Brascamp-Lieb inequality on Wikipedia. However, it seems to contain two typos in the statement of the inequality: The integral on the left hand side should end with "dx", and, more importantly, the constant on the right hand side should be $D^{-1/2}$, not $D^{1/2}$ (so the constant may well be infinite). Thanks, Hendrik Vogt, 6 June 2007.

Thank you for pointing out those two typos. You are right on both counts. Sullivan.t.j 08:55, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geometric measure theory[edit]

Wikipedia seems to be missing a survey article on geometric measure theory. Is there any chance you might be willing to start a stub for this important mathematical field? Silly rabbit 14:36, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will do some survey reading and start something off in the near future. Sullivan.t.j 16:23, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Valley of Darkness[edit]

Hi. You reverted my change of Metamorphosis Five to One. What's wrong with original research? That's what I based my change on. If you listen to the start of Metamorphosis Five, it starts with 5 note pairs before the melody. Metamorphosis One and the music in Valley of Darkness both start with 4 note pairs. Since they both sound so similar, it's easy for McCreary to confuse them. Just because someone says it is so, doesn't make it the truth. I'll let you be the judge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.118.45.65 (talk) 15:33, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I totally agree with you that this clip in "Valley of Darkness" is Metamorphosis One, not Metamorphosis Five. The problem with original research is that it is supposed to take place outside of Wikipedia. Ostensibly, this is intended to keep Wikipedia from being a battleground of editors' personal opinions. Having thought about this for a while, I think that this is one of the cases where we should be bold and correct the error even though the only (?) published source (McCreary) votes the other way, OR be damned, I'll make the changes myself. :-) Sullivan.t.j 19:42, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response and the support. I sure understand the rationale behind Wikipedia's 'no original research' policy. In most cases this will work, as long as there is reference material to begin with, and this material is correct. But I feel that the 'verifiable' policy outranks it. And some things are easily verified by doing a little original research. Stating that the 'sky is blue' can be easily verified by looking through the window. Similarly, people can easily verify which song it is by listening carefully to the clip and the CD. When it is clear and verifiable that some information on Wikipedia is wrong, I feel it should be either removed, corrected, or attributed with some cautionary message. Again, I'm not here so start a war, so I'll leave the changes to you ;-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.118.45.65 (talk) 21:44, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As you can see, I've made the appropriate changes, along with a brief explanation of how the two movements have been distinguished. I agree that the no OR policy can be restrictive at times: I spend most of my time on the mathematics articles, where there's a clear standard of truth and falsity (proof) and sometimes a lack of references. Occasionally, the rather philosophical question comes up: is an unreferenced but correct argument still OR? In this case, I think we're in the right. Berry conjecture[edit]

Hi. I'm wondering how much you know about the Berry conjecture. Did you basically use the MathWorld article as your source? I have a hard time believing that they got it right. The paper by Berry and Keating says that the conjecture that the zeros of the Riemann function are related to the eigenvalues of some Hermitian operator is actually due to Hilbert and Polya, and indeed this is what our article on the Hilbert–Pólya conjecture says. I was hoping you could connect those two articles in the proper way. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 13:10, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the original conjecture of Hilbert and Pólya was that the non-imaginary roots are the eigenvalues of some Hermitian operator, while the specific guess that this operator is ½(xp + px) is due to Berry and Keating. I would not stake my reputation on this interpretation, however — some bookwork is required! :-) Sullivan.t.j 18:08, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's also what I think, but it's not what Berry conjecture says. I'll fix it. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 10:50, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for edit summary[edit]

Hi. Thanks again for all your work. And just a comment. I think it would be good if you use the edit summary more often, it makes it a bit easier to track the recent changes. Thanks! :) Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:57, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and, yes, I'll make a bigger effort to use the edit summary in future — I'm aware that I get a bit lazy sometimes. Apologies for any confusion caused! Sullivan.t.j 16:07, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Berger's inequality[edit]

Your page Berger's inequality for Einstein manifolds contains a claim that the double torus does not admit an Enstein metric. This claim is incorrect. The Riemann surface of genus 2 admits a hyperbolic metric (many of them), which is in particular Einstein. I am not familiar with the paper by Kotschick and coauthor you cited. Perhaps they mean something else by a double torus. Katzmik —Preceding comment was added at 09:48, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, of course: Berger's inequality applies to four-dimensional Einstein manifolds. The mistake was mine. Apologies. I have corrected the remarks on the pages Berger's inequality for Einstein manifolds and Einstein manifold. Sullivan.t.j 16:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trancendental map[edit]

Hello! Thanks for the additions on the No wandering domain theorem. I added a link from trancendental map to this article, is it correct? Paxinum 08:50, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:BSG Season 1 Soundtrack.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BSG Season 1 Soundtrack.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 13:57, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Bernt_Karsten_Oksendal.png[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Bernt_Karsten_Oksendal.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of descrption pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 18:36, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IKS Rotarran[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article IKS Rotarran, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of IKS Rotarran. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:USS Centaur attacks Jem'Hadar attack ship.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:USS Centaur attacks Jem'Hadar attack ship.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 19:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
