Brascamp-Lieb inequality

I was amazed to find your article on the Brascamp-Lieb inequality on Wikipedia. However, it seems to contain two typos in the statement of the inequality: The integral on the left hand side should end with "dx", and, more importantly, the constant on the right hand side should be $D^{-1/2}$, not $D^{1/2}$ (so the constant may well be infinite). Valley of Darkness

Hi. You reverted my change of Metamorphosis Five to One. What's wrong with original research? That's what I based my change on. If you listen to the start of Metamorphosis Five, it starts with 5 note pairs before the melody. Metamorphosis One and the music in Valley of Darkness both start with 4 note pairs. Since they both sound so similar, it's easy for McCreary to confuse them. Just because someone says it is so, doesn't make it the truth. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I totally agree with you that this clip in "Valley of Darkness" is Metamorphosis One, not Metamorphosis Five. The problem with original research is that it is supposed to take place outside of Wikipedia. Ostensibly, this is intended to keep Wikipedia from being a battleground of editors' personal opinions. Having thought about this for a while, I think that this is one of the cases where we should be bold and correct the error even though the only (?) published source (McCreary) votes the other way, OR be damned, I'll make the changes myself. :-) Sullivan.t.j 19:42, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the response and the support. I sure understand the rationale behind Wikipedia's 'no original research' policy. In most cases this will work, as long as there is reference material to begin with, and this material is correct. But I feel that the 'verifiable' policy outranks it. And some things are easily verified by doing a little original research. Stating that the 'sky is blue' can be easily verified by looking through the window. Similarly, people can easily verify which song it is by listening carefully to the clip and the CD. When it is clear and verifiable that some information on Wikipedia is wrong, I feel it should be either removed, corrected, or attributed with some cautionary message. As you can see, I've made the appropriate changes, along with a brief explanation of how the two movements have been distinguished. I agree that the no OR policy can be restrictive at times: I spend most of my time on the mathematics articles, where there's a clear standard of truth and falsity (proof) and sometimes a lack of references. Occasionally, the rather philosophical question comes up: is an unreferenced but correct argument still OR? In this case, I think we're in the right. Sullivan.t.j 21:53, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Berry conjecture

Hi. I'm wondering how much you know about the Berry conjecture. Did you basically use the MathWorld article as your source? I have a hard time believing that they got it right. The paper by Berry and Keating says that the conjecture that the zeros of the Riemann function are related to the eigenvalues of some Hermitian operator is actually due to Hilbert and Polya, and indeed this is what our article on the Hilbert–Pólya conjecture says. I think that the original conjecture of Hilbert and Pólya was that the non-imaginary roots are the eigenvalues of some Hermitian operator, while the specific guess that this operator is ½(xp + px) is due to Berry and Keating. I would not stake my reputation on this interpretation, however — some bookwork is required! :-) Sullivan.t.j 18:08, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Berger's inequality

Your page Berger's inequality for Einstein manifolds contains a claim that the double torus does not admit an Enstein metric. This claim is incorrect. The Riemann surface of genus 2 admits a hyperbolic metric (many of them), which is in particular Einstein. I am not familiar with the paper by Kotschick and coauthor you cited.
