Plymouth Map

Thanks for updating the infobox on the Plymouth, NH page... but your new map is slightly off. Plymouth is actually just a tad North from where you placed it. If you could change it that would be great. (I would but my image editing software doesn't seem to be advanced enough to do so without turning the whole map orange). Template:Infobox Town NH

Is there any reason why you are using Template:Infobox City when there is an existing Template:Infobox Town NH? While the NH Infobox could use some updating - which is currently underway at Template:Infobox Town NH/test - the City one does not take into consideration the type of governments that NH towns have. Please use the NH infobox in keeping with Wikipedia:WikiProject New Hampshire. The NH Infobox has gone through Tfd once, and the result was to keep. I know its a lot of work updating the town infoboxes, but keeping with the project would be helpful. New England towns and Infobox City

Hi, SatyrTN. Thanks for your note. Basically, Infobox City only provides for leader_title and leader_name, whereas Infobox Town MA, for example, has government_name, allowing for the kind of town meeting the town governs itself with. Fictional Locations (Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends)

Hi, MD! Actually, I was planning on getting feedback regarding the merges from WikiProject:Thomas. I hadn't gotten to posting there yet - sometimes the internet is quicker than one's fingers :) I can see there's been a little discussion about merging that happened before I put in the tags. Shall I go ahead and remove the tags and put in redirects?

Please note that:

I didn't "assume that they could all be merged" - that's why I put in the tags to open discussion. Cavalierly adding the redirects without discussion - now that would be assuming :)
I didn't even know there was a related WikiProject when I started adding the tags. If the pages remain separate, which is totally cool, they should definitely be categorized and have WP:Thomas added to their discussion pages.

Sorry, didn't mean to accuse you! I've replied on WP:Thomas, but am still unsure what to do,i'd be inclined to delete the small articles if they are causing problems, either that or add them to Catagory:Fictional Locations (The Railway Series) and Catagory:Fictional Locations (Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends) - perhaps that is slightly better. re sunapee and geography

Hi, i didnt want to move it. it is out of place where it is now . i did leave a message on the discussion board, why i was moving it. the GEOGRAPHY header would not left justify like all the headers. dont know why. when i find out i will return it to the proper sequence. joe 03:23, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

take a look at the position of the word Geography. It is centered on the line, and not left justified. This was the anonoly that i was trying to avoid. There must be a bug in the program. thanx for the input. i know what the problem is, but dont know how to fix it yet. my browser is ms internet explorer. but i am using a 30" monitor. if i reduce the size of the dialog box to less than 20" the word Geography lefts justifies. I will have to keep that in mind. When my dialog box exceeds 21" the word Georgraphy, and only the word Geography centers itself.

i will eventually figure it out. case closed for the time being. glad we are now in consistent mode.

Town elevations

Hi there, No problem on the minor word changes for Claremont and Clarksville. Actually, I think those happened when the Smackbot ran through there a few months ago. I've been enjoying seeing the updates you've been making to all of the towns, and just ran across those two fixes because I wanted to reread the town high point sentences that I'd put in earlier. (Do I have a life?) That's a good idea about the town elevations; I'll try to take a look at them when I get a chance. (I'm sure seeing your steady updates every day will remind me...) NH leader lists

Sorry about that. It briefly crossed my mind that you might have done it the other way on purpose as well (not?). I'm going through a list of articles I made that reference the infobox and have an HTML break in them anywhere. Seems like most of the NH articles show up. I'm not sure if Ligulem has finished yet (his latest progress report says 400 left). The list of articles with breaks has something like 500 articles in it (not all have breaks in the infobox). Seems like it will take a good long time to work through the whole list. -- Rick Block (talk)

Nope - didn't do it that way on purpose. As you can see from the code, I put in the <br>s for the third and greater — and didn't even think to put it for the second, thereby keeping it on one line. Forest through the trees and all that :)

By the way, I'm curious if you know the answer to something that's been bothering me about CI. Are the cats of an article stored separately from the article itself? Or are they just lines of text in the article? From what I gather, you're a technical person, so you'll see that the latter is a huge overload of resources when you're searching for something, while the former would make CI much easier to implement.

Yeah, I'm a technical sort of person (I've been a programmer/software architect for 30 years). There's a database that has a record for each article/category in each category, indexed by category. The record has a pointer to the article/category that's been added to the category (this database is effectively an index by category). I think this corresponds to your notion that the cats are stored separately, but the "category" line exists in the article as well. There are several databases like this underlying various MediaWiki features ("whatlinkshere" is another one - even the article titles are in a database containing a pointer to where the content is).

Note that the category display limit of 200 articles at a time was implemented as a defensive performance technique. Large categories used to be displayed in their entirety, requiring all the database records for the category to be fetched all at once. For categories with 1000's of articles, this was a problem since there's ultimately a single monster of a PC running effectively a single database behind all of Wikipedia's traffic. I suspect intersections are likely to have the same sort of issue and it may not be solvable, since (in the worst case) there is no intersection but you don't know this until you've fetched all the records. The point is that even stored separately overload may be an issue. -- Rick Block (talk) 03:57, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

I would think that if it were stored correctly, it's a simple query for an intersection. The query is simple, but the amount of disk/cpu time it takes varies with the size of the DB. Huge databases (e.g. category:Living people, with 70,000 entries) take a (relatively) significant amount of time to read all the way through. Radiant! wrote some code implementing an extension for intersection (you might want to take a look at it, there's a link from the CI talk page). Like you suspect, the code is not terribly complicated (boils down to a single query). The issue is what impact executing such a query might have on the rest of the system. My guess is if we can't afford to just read a large category (although maybe there was something else involved in the 200 at a time limit), we surely can't afford to intersect one. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:29, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I looked at the latest "addition" to the Keene article per your request, and I'd agree that the text in question doesn't exactly enhance the article. (If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably a local kid ragging on another part of town. As far as I know, there aren't any actual "Ghettos" in Keene.) If you want to remove it, I'd say go for it. Hi there. Got your note about checking up on Lake Winnipesaukee's size ranking in the US. My most readily-available lake and stream information is for New Hampshire only, but I can probably ferret out some other resources. Geographic Center of New Hampshire

Hi - What source do you have for the geographic center of New Hampshire being in Thornton? I've been telling people that it's in Ashland, based, I believe, on something the U.S. Geological Survey put out a long time ago. Hi, Ken! I took the ZCTA data from the US Census Gazetteer, took the min lat and min long, and averaged them. The actual numbers are Lat: 43.905185, Long: -71.619914. Come to think of it, though, that doesn't take into account the extreme portions of the state. Ah, I see how you got it. Thornton would be the center of the smallest rectangle in which you could fit New Hampshire. But the state gets narrower as you go north, so much of that rectangle where Thornton is the center would include Vermont. There are GIS routines that calculate the centroid of a polygon; I could run that at work and see what comes up. (In school a long time ago, we would practice locating the centroid by making a cardboard cutout of a shape and figuring out what point you would have to attach a string to make the shape balance perfectly when you dangled it...) --Ken Gallager 14:31, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, that was interesting! Just ran the centroid, using ArcInfo. Turns out that it's in New Hampton, just south of the Ashland line and just west of Center Harbor (see image).

Hi, ForestJay! I haven't made it to Firefly, unfortunately! Colorado Center of Population

Your original research regarding Colorado's center of population is fraught with inaccuracies. The coordinates on the referenced list are in a rural, mountainous area well over five miles outside of the Littleton city limits (yes, it is the City of Littleton, not the Town of Littleton). You assume that just because Google Maps indicates a mailing address of "Littleton, CO 80127" that it is in the city. ZIP code boundaries often to not match city boundaries; indeed, much of the suburban area south of Denver has "Littleton" ZIP codes even though most of this area is not in Littleton but in other cities such as Centennial and Lone Tree, and in unincorporated Highlands Ranch. Bottom line: Google Maps refers to places based on ZIP code methodology, and just because an address is in a ZIP code assigned with a particular city's name does not mean it is actually in that city (see explanation at ZIP code).
Finally, based on your assumption that if Google Maps says those coordinates have a "Littleton" ZIP code then they must be in Littleton, you make a further assumption that since Littleton is the seat of Arapahoe County (or lies mostly within Arapahoe County), then the coordinates must also be in Arapahoe County. They are actually over nine miles from the Arapahoe County line and lie comfortably within Jefferson County.
I suggest that before you take it upon yourself to make a pronouncement that each state's center of population is in a particular city or county, that you actually verify such statements by consulting maps showing city and county boundaries and confirming that the coordinates do in fact lie within those boundaries. Hi, Watkinsian! Thanks for writing! I don't believe this is original research, since the lat and long numbers are taken from the US Census Bureau. All I've done is tried (to the best of my ability) to tie those lat/long numbers to a particular town, city, or county for each state. And I freely admit that a) I don't have the best tools available; and b) I could be wrong. If you have a suggestion for another web tool that I can use to fix the first part of that, I'll be less likely to fall into the second part of that :) But rather than fearing either of those statement, I'm trying to be bold and add what I believe is relevant and interesting information to articles. This is the first newsletter of the LGBT studies Wikiproject! Come and discuss your thoughts on it at the Wikiproject talk page.
An LGBT Barnstar has been created for editors who have contributed significantly to LGBT-related articles.
The LGBT Portal has been revamped and tidied. It's various sections could do with updating on a weekly basis. Please pitch in if you have the time.
The main page of the Wikiproject has also undergone a bit of a rewrite. Your participation is welcome.
James Robert Baker became the first known LGBT biography to become a Featured Article on November 22. It was written and nominated by Jeffpw. Well done Jeff!
A discussion has been started on the WikiProject talk page about how to get the WikiProject going. Your thoughts would be welcome.

"Walkin' on Wall Street" is the actual title - see [1] or [2]

"I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College" was indeed an independent song. It gets lumped in with America Rock! because that's the easiest category to put it in.

There is an "Introduction" for the Scooter Computer videos - see [3] and [4]

There is a "Greatest Show on Earth" (also called "The Weather Show"). See [5]. It was never aired due to legal troubles with the circus industry.

You're probably right - I think it is "$7.50 Once a Week".

You're right - it's "Scooter Computer & Mr. Chips", but it's often called "Computer Rock" in line with the other four titles.

Things that make ya go Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I saw the change you made to the LGBT banner, and am ambivalent about it. I had to seek out the image itself and read the tag before it made sense to me. At first I wondered why somebody would put a feather over the flag, but the tag explained it was actually a quill. While I don't oppose the image change, I do find it esoteric; and I wonder if anybody will automatically understand it, or be similarly motivated to look at the source to find an explanation. Hi there. I'm afraid my bot isn't open source, and at the moment it isn't really fit for general consumption: it's got a fairly annoying memory leak, its error handling is a bit lacking, and the user interface could most kindly be described as 'minimal'. Edits to Gay Marketing

Hi SatyrNH - I'm new to this wiki world so I hope this is the right place to pose this question. Recently I added Target 10 to the list of gay agencies that specialize in gay marketing (the gay marketing wikipedia entry). I also created an entry for Target 10 in wikipedia so people could learn about this company and its specialty in GLBT marketing. When logging back on to explore/learn wilipedia more I saw that you deleted Target 10 and one other agency from the gay marketing article. Can you tell me why you wanted to make this edit?

I understand wikipedia is not a promotional tool but there are very few agencies that specialize in this area and I think the greater public could benefit by learning who they are (not just my agency). If it's credentials, pls know that Targe 10 has been around for five years and I (the president) have been in gay marketing for 10. My GLBT activism goes back even further.

Could you let me know your thoughts when you have a minute? Also, I see on some of your posts you list LGBT affinity groups on wikipedia. I tried to learn how to join/participate but could not figure it out. Would you mind directing me to the right place to do that?

I also visited the LGBT Wiki Project and think I can be of assistance. I will wait until I understand wiki more before I sign on as a participant. Honestly, I do not understand a lot of wiki terminology yet but will make a point to learn. It has to be four reverts in the last 24 hours before he gets blocked. He's done one so far. When he does another, if you see it before I do, place the template {{3RR}} on his talk page. When he does the third revert, he gets {{3RR4}}, and if he reverts a fourth time we report him at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RR. In order for this to work, our reverts have to come from both of us, so that our three reverts are spread out and don't pile up on one or the other of us. So I've done one revert so far, don't hesitate to do the next one if you see it. Dev920, please see Template talk:LGBT for the relevant background. It really is only a 3RR issue, the template had to be locked a couple of days ago because of this user. I noticed that SatyrBot added the LGBT project template to Talk:Esera Tuaolo, however, the talk page already had this template on there. It now has two of the same template (I'm about to cleanup the talk page so I'll remove the redundant one) but you may want to look into your bot and correct this so it doesn't happen again. High Schools

Hi there -- That's a much nicer looking list than the current one. I think you're right about de-emphasizing the counties (though it hadn't occurred to me before, since I use them as mapping units fairly regularly). My one question would be about the horizontal line every 5 schools: it looks good, but how do you think the list would look if you used a line to mark each new letter instead? Maybe it'll look worse that way, but I just expect some people (like me) will be scratching their heads for a moment about the significance of the lines in their current configuration. However, I'll go for looks over meaning if the table looks bad with unevenly-spaced lines.

I'd say go ahead and change the White Mountain School article's title. I found that the school uses "The" occasionally, but not in the most important places (their logo, their contact info, etc.). Just my vote, anyway.

It looks great! I kind of like how at the top of the list you give the reader the choice of how to display it. If I had to choose just one, though, I'd still say do the splitting by letter. Gay rights redirects

You tagged many "19xx in gay rights" articles for speedy deletion as "redirects to inappropriate articles." How is the redirect to Timeline of LGBT history inappropriate? Also, please don't tag "inappropriate" redirects as speedy deletable, they're not. If they're redirecting to the wrong place, you just simply change the redirect yourself. Hi, Metros, I believe I used the word "incorrect" place, not inappropriate. And that may not even be the right word for me to have used, but there wasn't a speedy-delete tag that said "This redirect is on one page from a list of pages. Years in gay rights nav boxes

I appreciate what you've been doing with the nav boxes on these pages; but perhaps you could refine them a bit, as they make the page too wide to be seen all at once, like most other wikipages, on my screen (which is brand new, a 17 inch). Can you make the LGBT Rights box appear under the nav box, and thus reduce the width of the page? That kind of heavy-duty coding is beyond my ken. --Textorus 19:55, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing that up. I was actually thinking something similar, but hadn't gotten to it yet. My big beef (<grin>) is having too much white space at the top of the page, but I'll see what I can do. What do you think about not having the "Contents" box? I think we need the contents boxes, if for no other reason than it makes it possible to go to one particular month and edit there, instead of having to open the entire page for editing, if you follow what I'm saying. My idea would be to have the nav box at the very top, with the contents and LGBT boxes immediately underneath, on the right and on the left. This would also allow the contents box to have it's regular width (at the moment, it looks awkward: section numbers are on different lines from the months), and would thus be shorter. I understand you are trying to minimize white space; not sure how that can be avoided, though.
