I've been working insistently on List of compositions by Viktor Kosenko for over three years (if I told you the story behind my latest efforts to collect information on Kosenko's compositions you wouldn't believe me), and now somebody shows up, "copy" my work-in-progress, and claims its creation. That is, my A-number-one piece of work is now part of somebody else's list of articles created. How to deal with that ? Krenakarore ^TK 17:51, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

There is a way of tagging an edit such that it is clear that it is a duplicate of a previous one; it might be a special 'anchoring' template but I can't remember the details of it; maybe another editor will know. I've come across this facility only once some time ago and have tried to find it for you tonight but haven't succeeded yet. I'll keep looking for it and will update here again if/when I find it. • @Rosiestep, Drmies, and Krenakarore: Excuse my butting in here but I have seen the List of compositions by Viktor Kosenko on the Google cache] and it seems to me it is well worthwhile adding to the article. Can't we reach some compromise on this? It would really be a pity if it simply disappeared. It is obviously the result of a great deal of hard work. I don't know who produced it first but we do all work in a spirit of cooperation. If Krenakore has his own version, then I would suggest he should add it to the article asap before someone else retrieves it and does the same.--Ipigott (talk) 15:28, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
  • I agree it should be up in article space but we can hardly force an editor to do so if they think it's not ready. However, Krenakarore, you can put it up and continue to work on it, of course: two-thirds of an article is better (for the reading audience) than no article at all. I have compared the version prepared by Krenakarore with the one which was apparently loaded up onto the mainspace and see they are virtually identical. I certainly think it would be extremely helpful to all of those interested in Viktor Kosenko if we could benefit from the list under development by Krenakarore. Once the list is up on the mainspace, it will not only present a far better account of the compositions than those given in the biography but will allow others (e.g. Gerda Arendt) to make further additions and improvements.--Ipigott (talk) 20:37, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

removal of my page "Les Enfants Terribles (café)

Oh dear. Wiki is a mystery for us outsiders. I've just discovered that the page I created has been deleted for a reason that makes no sense to me at all. There are almost no external references - though I have now found some mention on other sites and in several books. This seems very unfair as I never log in - or rather haven't since creating the page so I never got the message someone wanted to delete it. The situation is that I seem to be the only "expert" on this subject and since talking to an ex-waitress can now fairly safely claim this was probably the second expresso bar in London and probably the first discothèque. Does my text still exist somewhere? Help?

@Montanabw: I've looked carefully through the article and it certainly seems to me to be material for GA. I worked on a few of the repeated wikilinks in the article (usually one for each item is sufficient) but I suspect there are several more requiring attention. The lead needs to be expanded (and should not contain citations). The citations containing author names should be standardized (last name first, etc.). As you have contributed to a whole string of GA articles, I'm sure you know how to proceed.--Ipigott (talk) 13:18, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

I was looking over the Women in Red information. I found a list of red link articles for the editathon. Is it ok to use the red links now to get started? Hi, @Zpeopleheart; thank you for stopping by. Yes, yes, yes, please go for it and start all the articles you like as soon as you feel like doing so. The redlinks are not being saved for the edit-a-thon. While the "physical" event is being held in New York City and other cities on various dates, Women in Red is hosting the "virtual"/"online" event for about 11 days although several editors have already started on the articles so the start and end dates are more like suggestions. No, you choose--a lesson learned from The Wife of Bath's Tale. This weekend we did many homely things; Mrs. Drmies was at work all Saturday and out at night with her girlfriends so I had to play papa. Today we did middle-class things like cleaning out the shed and stuff: it is my sworn male duty to deal with the rats I ran into. Yuk. And some job openings came up so I had to rewrite my standard cover letter and update the old resume. In other words, not much wiki time. You were suggesting I look into expanding the article some? Cause I need to rebuild that shed but can't afford to fly in an architect from Germany.

About that shed: this house was formerly owned by Wayne Greenhaw. In the shed I discovered a poster from some election, I guess in the 1980s: his wife, Sally, had run for office, some position as a judge. So she must have gone through law school maybe in the 1960s or 1970s, and had the moxie to run for judge when her husband was a white Alabamian writing critically about the South's political racial heritage. What she's saying is that she's an admin yet has never been involved in filing an ANI but would report him if he didn't back off, which basically says how irritating he was being that she'd have to do it. If this is a "abuse of admin tools" investigation please go away NeilN as it's not about that. clearly. I can spot trouble when I see it. Rosie is the last person to act in the way Calvin suggests. I was only ever talking about the WP. I don't see how me using the talk page saying I don't see the point of its creation is disruptive? @NeilN: hi there. Sorry for the delay in responding; I was being Skype interviewed by the University of Virginia regarding content gender gap. And then numerous edit conflicts. You asked for my response. Here it is. I perceived that Calvin had made a comment which offended me ("Wikiproject Women is almost anti-male editors."), and I worried it offended others, and I called him out on it. I am an admin so I am aware of Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents but I do not assume that others are aware of it, or that I have never gone to ANI with a complaint before. As for Calvin's point of view about the particular Wikiproject being unnecessary, he is entitled to that opinion. I did nothing to silence it ("Please choose instead to keep your discussions here using safe-space tone.") but I did offer a one sentence clarification to what WikiProject Women is about ("As it may be unclear to you, the scope of this project is to provide an umbrella over several women-focused projects; nothing wrong with that."). I invited Calvin to participate in the project if he wished, I thanked him for the editing he does, and let him know I'd be glad to work alongside him on women's biographies ("And keep up the good work editing women's biographies! Know that you are warmly welcome to join this Wikiproject or work alongside us, as that's what we do here... create/edit women's biographies."). Calvin's response seemed to imply that I misunderstood his post and I responded, "If you believe I misunderstood you, then perhaps you can see how you misunderstood me? ... These people are quick to fault others but can't see their own faults. This is just a case of people sticking with each other like glue, but I don't really expect people like Dr. Blofeld to be any different, it's not like he would go against his co-founder. He can't even see that Rosiestep was wrong to use the threat of reporting to ANI as some kind of abuse of power to in effect stop me from posting on the WP talk page (which everyone is allowed to do, by the way). Calvin999 I am sorry that people have resorted to name calling. Despite the appearance that you in as much called all of the editors on the page anti-male, which seemed that you started the name calling, civility should be the goal. As was explained to you many of us do write articles on men, as well as many other subjects, just not for this project. We are not addressing the disparity of women editors to men editors, we are trying to create articles on women. There is no anti-male bias nor any focus on any particular type of woman, as you have seen, we cover artists, architects, musicians, dancers, writers, etc. It was also explained by I think nearly everyone who interacted with you that none of us are anti-male. Would you make a comment on say the LGBT page that their focus is anti-heterosexual? On the Military page that their focus is anti-peace? Would you think those were appropriate comments? All WikiProjects have a narrow focus, by design, so that a specific area can be addressed. You are entitled not to like ours, but we do not have to agree with you that it is pointless. Discretionary sanctions

Rosiestep, for future reference, WikiProject Women would fall under the Arbitration Committee's GGTF discretionary sanctions: "Discretionary sanctions are authorised for any page relating to or any edit about: (i) the Gender Gap Task Force; (ii) the gender disparity among Wikipedians; and (iii) any process or discussion relating to these topics, all broadly construed." Pinging NeilN so that he's aware of this too.

If you want to, you can post the sanctions warning at the top of the project's talk page or you can post alerts on the talk page of any editor causing a problem. I've done the former at GGTF, but I incorporated it into the general heading to make it less aggressive-looking (see {{Gender gap task force/Talk header}}.

For any uninvolved admin to take action under the sanctions, the editor must have received an alert on his/her talk page. The talk-page templates are at Template:Ds/talk notice and the individual alerts are at Template:Ds/alert. The "code" is GGTF, which is added to the templates. Hope this helps! Bethel, Alaska

I know Alaska Native issues greatly interest you. Today there was a devastating fire in Bethel, Alaska, nearly 1,000 miles from my home in Juneau. Bethel is in Western Alaska. The fire destroyed 2 Native schools, and their dormitory. A library that serves as a kind of museum for Yupik artifacts and history was saved. Hi Rosie. I've created a draft thank-you note for Women in Science. This time, I would appreciate having it checked, perhaps by Keilana too, before I send it out. I haven't included any "fair use" logos this time. It's great to see how much was achieved during the month of November: new articles, enhancements, DYKs, and a number of enthusiastic new editors. I'm preparing an extended list of participants which I hope to complete today or tomorrw. I'm still pretty busy getting Jean Sibelius to GA (which explains why I have not created as many new articles as I would have liked). Hope I'll also have time to draft and send out the invitations for Women in Religion. Any offers of assistance? I've just recorded over 60 active contributors (and have no doubt missed a few). I actually started out as a scientist myself (electrical engineering) before developing an interest in languages and culture. Sorry I didn't immediately include a link to the actual document. It could no doubt benefit from some tidying up - maybe in the form of an alphabetical list of names in tabular form, with the editathons each has participated in. But there's no rush. I've sent out the thank-you notes to 70 editors. I included an invitation to participate in Women in Religion. Tomorrow - if I have time - I'll try to send out invitations to other WikiProjects and some of the keener contributors to articles on religion. As for the "jack of all trades", my father was a metallurgist and was keen for me to follow in his footsteps. In Britain, we have to specialize in either sciences or arts for our school matriculation. I specialized in sciences although I preferred arts. Only after a couple of years at university did I move into modern languages. The combination stood me in good stead when I first headed European R&D projects in machine translation (in close collaboration with the U.S. Air Force and other American developments) and later networked cultural applications across Europe for museums, archives and libraries. And now, in my retirement, I have the opportunity to apply this experience to Wikipedia. Ipigott It is fascinating knowing the back story. I started in chemical engineering. Was the worst experience of my life, only female in the school in a very hostile environment. I had to work, thus I took a job in a bank. They agreed to pay for my education if I switched to finance, so I did. I worked days and went to night school for 10 years because after I finished the finance degree, I undertook women's and minorities' history. Much later, I undertook independent research in anthropology and law. I have always thought that I have no clue what I want to be when I grow up ;) SusunW (talk) 15:46, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Women in Science piece for the SP

Rosie, thanks for inviting me to write an article for Signpost. While I would be happy to assist, I think it is important that the article should be authored by one of the active female members of the group. I now hear that Megalibrarygirl has volunteered. I look forward to her article. If she needs any help, I may be able to assist. May I just say at this point that I think there should be emphasis on the increasingly constructive collaboration between all those involved, both the formal members of WiR and those who participate in the editathons, many of whom are (not yet?) members. This is all in pleasant contrast to the conflicts which arise all too often in Wikipedia as a whole. I believe most people collaborate because their work is appreciated and they are made to feel welcome. Megalibrarygirl Rosie's list from the other page "Readers would be interested in who organised it, where and when it was hosted, how many people turned up, what sort of people they were (volunteers? academics? librarians?), which areas were worked on; perhaps a list of articles created. Plus photos (NYAS event) if available and there are no privacy issues. Also think about explaining how it was organised, whether there were roadblocks to overcome, who best to approach, how best to advertise it, etc., so that other people can derive some guidance and ideas on how to organise something like this themselves. A "lessons learned" type look back at the event (if applicable); pitfalls to avoid, as well as things that made it a success." seemed daunting.

I guess WIR organized it, but I don't know anything about the NY meetup part. You created lists and community members chipped in, culling candidates from other language Wikipedia articles, Thomson Reuter's Most Cited Scientists List, and the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science, among other sources. 75 articles were created in the week before the event started and 265 during the event. Subjects ranged from anthropology to chemistry, math to astrophysics, engineering to botany, ecology to medicine and represented women from every continent (save Antarctica). If the article is to concentrate on Women in Science, I think it would be useful to provide a bit of background on how the project started and how the virtual editathons evolved, initially strongly based on physical meetups but increasingly driven by inputs from the WikiProject itself. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Woman’s Messenger Motor Service

While working away on my woman of the day, am I at 100 yet?, I discovered this gem, Woman’s Messenger Motor Service, which seems right up your alley, and was apparently known as the Red Cross Motor Corps. [23] Though a search produced several articles that mention the Motor Corps, Ruth M. Jefford, Alzira Peirce, SS Mactan (1898), Florence Jaffray Harriman, and mine Julia Lester Dillon, no article on the service itself and I don't see it covered in the Red Cross Article, other than a link to their uniform [24]. Wikipedia 15 session

Hi Rosiestep, I see you have made (so far) the only session proposal for the West Coast Wikipedia 15 celebrations. Yay! I'm trying to nudge SF planning forward, so I wanted to ask you: is it important to you that this be in some way linked with Seattle, Vancouver, etc.? If so, do you have ideas about how that should work? (One thought -- given that WMF has excellent facilities for Hangouts On Air, you could do it as a Google Hangout with panelists in each location -- and each of the other locations streams it locally on a screen. That format could work either if it's just a local event, or in sync with the other locations. But is that more or less what you have in mind, or something different?) Arkansas Women's Hall of Fame

Arkansas just created a Women's Hall of Fame. I have no idea how to create the template like is on the other WHoF entries. Looking at both Colorado and Connecticut it just looks like any other template. Can you help? Also...Arkansas inducted an organization that might interest you. The Women’s Emergency Committee was formed in Little Rock in 1958 to get schools reopened in response to the governor closing the city’s four public high schools to prevent desegregation. I guess I should have waited until February to do Edith Irby Jones, but I was incredibly surprised there was no article on her. She was legend in Oklahoma growing up along with Ada Lois Sipuel. I also found out there is a California induction that has been going on for 15 years, so I guess I shall add that to my to do list. This way, they would get more notice on our navbar. And maybe in 2016, we could collaborate with some of the women's halls of fame and get those redlinked articles written during an editathon(s)? Seems like it only has American inductees so I'll ask them about vedettes, having worked on their articles a lot in the last 2-3 years. Is up for deletion, and the discussion has encompassed deletion of Category:Women translators. See Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2015_December_23#Category:Male_translators. I was not notified of this, and have only just discovered it myself by happenstance, which accounts for the late notification.
