CSD[edit]

Please keep in mind that there may be useful content in the edit history of pages that look like candidates for speedy deletion. It's a hassle, I know, but such is life on wikipedia. --fvw* 04:33, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

My apologies. I saw the history, but I misinterpreted CSD criterion A1. In any event, I've VFD'ed it, and my guess is that it will be deleted. We really should have a policy on news articles, whether it be to transwiki to Wikinews, or something. Ral315 13:05, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the barnstar![edit]

Hi Ral315, Thank you very much for the groovy new barnstar! I've put it on my user page, hope that's OK. There'll probably be a few more suburbs that get added in the coming weeks (I've still got to add basic entries for any suburbs between the letters 'B' and 'H' in the list of Sydney suburbs). -- All the best, Nickj (t) 04:49, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article deletion note[edit]

You voted previously to keep the article Rogers Cadenhead. You may have changed your mind now that the author has admitted to writing the article himself “as an experiment.” He himself says, “I am somewhat eager to see this vote end with my deletion.”

Don't block vandals right away[edit]

Give vandals the benefit of the doubt for at least two revisions before blocking. 165.230.149.164 23:52, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding "giving vandals two reverts for the benefit of the doubt": First, I am not an admin, so it's entirely up to the discretion of an admin. But I reverted because I know anyone who does it will be banned. New Orleans is still a city, albeit a damaged and hurt one. Ral315 23:55, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
I don't doubt that New Orleans is still a city. My dispute centers over the area of water as opposed to the area of land; it happens to have fluctuated thanks to Hurricane Latrina. (Ahem, Katrina.) Not mentioning that might amount to not recognizing the reality of floods.165.230.149.164 23:59, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Water refers to a permanent, standing body of water. The water in New Orleans will be drained. The amount of land vs. water doesn't change when it rains, and it certainly shouldn't change here. Ral315 00:02, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
And do "permanent, standing bodies of water" not have tides, which occur on a regular basis? Besides, storm surges make extensions out of "permanent, standing bodies of water". Perhaps we should recognize that bodies of water do change shape and size. This is one of the advantages of Wikipedia: it can be edited quickly to account for quick changes in reality. 165.230.149.164 00:06, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to argue with you anymore. This is NOT what Wikipedia is for. We're reporting what the Census Bureau said, not what we're saying right now based on a flood. Again, flooding does NOT turn land into water, unless the water never recedes. So, for now, please leave it as-is. Ral315 00:13, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
Although bodies of water DO change shape and size during some storms, I'll keep that part of the article as-is. 165.230.149.164 00:14, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RfA[edit]

I have nominated you for adminship. If you are already an admin, please mention so in the request and delete its link from the RfA main page. Otherwise, please indicate whether you accept or decline the nomination. JIP | Talk 16:42, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I seriously was a bit shocked when I first read your comment on my talk page. But I really appreciate the nomination...good luck on yours as well! Ral315 06:31, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

Bureaucratship[edit]

Hi, Ral315. Thank you so much for your support and kind words on my bureaucratship nomination. Unfortunately, it didn't pass, but I intend to run again soon. If you'd like to be informed next time around, please let me know on my talk page. Thanks again! Andre (talk) 05:24, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

About my RfA[edit]

Hi Ral315. You chose to be neutral on my RfA, but I appreciate the fact that you made your concerns public. I just would like to assure you that I will still work my best on Wikipedia, in order to prove wrong any fears you may still have about me. Best regards, Sam Hocevar 08:55, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad that you became an admin, and I'm sure you'll do a great job. My only concern was your relationship with the GNAA, but other than that, you're a perfect candidate for the job. Best wishes. Ral315 14:59, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

Signpost article[edit]

I'm not quite ready to resume my previous level of activity, but I have written a story for this week's Signpost and added it to the newsroom. In the meantime, thanks for your diligence in keeping this project going. --Michael Snow 00:05, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Messeges[edit]

Hey, please don't put a redirect on The Proud Family Movie please. I'm going to put information in it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tcatron565 (talkcontribs)

I placed the redirect there because the page was blank. Now that you've started adding things, that's fine with me. I would suggest you fix it up more, however; for a general idea of how the page should look, see Rocket Power: Island of the Menehune, another made-for-TV movie.
Finally, just a etiquette note...please do not edit other users' user pages. Conversation is supposed to go on the User talk page (the "Discussion" tab). Ral315 02:43, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

I'm pleased to inform you that you are now an administrator. Please consider reading all the material on the administrators' reading list before testing out your new privileges. Popups tool[edit]

Congratulations on being made an admin! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. It's described at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. The quick version of the installation procedure for admins is to paste the following into User:Ral315/Archive 4/monobook.js:

// [[User:Lupin/popups.js]] - please include this line

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
             + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

popupShortcutKeys=true; // optional: enable keyboard shortcuts
popupAdminLinks=true; // optional: enable admin links

There are more options which you can fiddle with listed at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. Give it a try and let me know if you find any glitches or have suggestions for improvements! Lupin|talk|popups 23:18, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost[edit]

Must have missed it that week. :-) How about a series of articles documenting the upcoming Arb Com elections in December? This week could be Part I, introduction, and then there could be more parts in the series documenting the "election", the process, the candidates, the current arbcom, etc. How does that sound? Mike Pratt fetish[edit]

Just FYI the guy with the Mike Pratt fetish is also adding irrelevant links and whole sections under articles as 195.92.168.175. I think this might be some weird form of vandalism as the talk page for that IP has a somewhat taunting message at the top about it being a dynamic IP so try and make complaints ... might not have been put there by the same guy. Anyway I'm trying to revert all the changes and I'm going to start calling it link spamming now. PS. Making things worse, I just caught an edit that could well be hoax information involving Pratt. 23skidoo 13:37, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Pratt was a real actor. I'm familiar with his work and have seen him in many movies and TV shows over the years. I was actually planning to clean up the article on him. So there's no hoax there. But the anon seems to think there should be sections added about Pratt to every TV show he appeared on, even if only in one episode. And he appears to have made up a play in which Pratt allegedly appeared, so that's my issue with this whole thing. 23skidoo 15:11, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

your edit in the wiki paper[edit]

The Wikipedia Signpost is not a soapbox, a talk page, or a forum for gauging consensus. It is a news source. Please do not add anything about Terri Schiavo and its FAC request; it's unnecessary in the article. Ral315 01:31, September 13, 2005 (UTC)

I saw your revert on the paper:
(diff) (hist) . . Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2005-09-12/Features and admins; 01:28 . . Ral315 (Talk) (revert; Signpost is not a soapbox to gauge public opinion.)
I did not post to estimate or measure or gauge public opinion:
Conversely, an editor myself, I posted to update the news. (Further, I could care less to estimate the public opinion; rather, it is important to educate readers so they can be an educated voting public.)
I respect your opinion, but you're only a 15-year old high-school sophomore, and I'm a 39-year old veteran, even to the point of being an old geezer. Why don't you run it by the editors before you revert -unless you can justify keeping the public in the dark; besides, I did not advocate or promote anything: I just reported on the news, about which I am expert.
--GordonWattsDotCom 01:35, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not gauging or measuring public opinion -I am reporting facts; See your talk.--GordonWattsDotCom 01:37, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In all fairness, I want to let you know I'm going to notify the editors about you, so you won't feel I'm talking behind your back. It's their paper, after all, and they can determine these matters.--GordonWattsDotCom 01:40, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, I'm a 15-year-old college sophomore, not that it matters. Age means nothing on wiki. Secondly, I am the editor of the Wikipedia Signpost; as in, I publish the paper every week. User:The wub wrote that particular article, but I'm "in charge" of the paper, as far as that goes. I reverted because I feel your insert was inappropriate in the article. Thirdly, the Wikipedia Signpost is not a place to post all news and FACs. If someone wanted to vote on your FAC, they would find it on the FAC page, or follow the link that was already there. The point of the Signpost is not to let every user advertise their particular FAC on; if it were so, there'd be 30-40 articles a week, and most of them would lack in content. So, I respect your opinion, but what's there about the Terri Schiavo is good, and NPOV. Ral315 01:42, September 13, 2005 (UTC)
I got your message in reply: If you're indeed the top-dog at the Signpost, then you can figure these things out. Nonetheless, I did notify your colleagues, so you all can do as you all see fit; I've cast "my" vote as to what's news and what's not; I didn't mean to get down on you for being a young kid -your vote counts, and if you all vote to override my edit, then your concensus reigns, but know that I did not think this would be bad news; still, you edit as you see fit.--GordonWattsDotCom 01:48, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know I would have reverted as well, and I've replied as such on Gordon's talk page. the wub "?/!" 09:33, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • RE: Your post on your friend's page: "I think Gordon thought I was just a random editor with a grudge against him. In any event, it's over now, and I do wish Gordon good luck as well. Besides, after so many hours of editing (and personally visiting the Schiavo website to get non-Fair Use photos), I just might get some sleep, lol. PS: How'd you get a user name so similar to Raul654 AKA Mark, the Featured Articles editor? Just coincidence and random chance? Thx. Hello[edit]

Maria Pia Saxe Coburg Braganza[edit]

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.. If you want to move an article, please make a request per Wikipedia:Requested moves. Transferring the content is not the way to do it. Ral315 15:09, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me but the unique attempt to vandalize the page of Maria Pia of Braganza is the change the authentic baptism name of the duchess Maria Pia in Hilda Toledano. Hilda Toledano was only a pseudonym name that she used when she wrote some novels. (You can see also in this web page : http://www.projectedletters.com/vault/maria-pia/maria-pia-3/ ). Don' t exist other documents where you can see the name Hilda Toledano. In all the official documents of this woman the only used name was Maria Pia Saxe Coburg Braganza. So the attempt to change her name is only a fool the portoguese historical truth ! And this is also illegal ! M. de Sousa 13 September 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia policy is to use the most-frequently used name, not necessarily the legal name. Also, just copying the content over doesn't work; for legal reasons, we have to have it moved. To do this, make a post on Wikipedia:Requested moves about this. Please do not copy and paste the information. Ral315 20:28, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

Hi. I'm the sysadmin for a school at IP address 203.56.245.7

As far as I can tell we are unblocked already, so that's all good. Just wanted to apologise, the student in question has been located and is being dealt with.

Jase

Time to meditate on your comments: You have a good point[edit]

I've had time to meditate on your comments about age not necessarily having a connect to wisdom; I must apologize for maybe exaggerating the effect my old age has upon my qualifications; I never meant to down you for being only fifteen -I hope you didn't read me that way. Rather, I was pointing out that the RfA policy says that anyone who is a responsible editor should have no problem being an admin -because editors are supposed to be qualified anyhow:

"Current Wikipedia policy is to grant this access liberally to anyone who has been an active Wikipedia contributor for a while and is generally a known and trusted member of the community....'This should be no big deal," according to Jimmy Wales'." WP:adminship

That being said, I looked at your contributions, and they are quite impressive: Total edits 3157; Distinct pages edited 2014; First edit 2004-09-30 02:16:27 - a long time ago -- your contributions are far deeper than mine -and, what's more, I am on the "low" end of contribs compared to ANY other RfA candidate as far as I could see. Very impressive!!

However, the policy ominously says also: "Generally speaking, standards have become harder in practice." Oops! I can’t keep up.

I have just one question, if you could help me out: you have an "Edits/page (avg) 1.57" (That is 2157 divided by 2014) How in the world did you accomplish that? 'That must mean that every page you visit, you only edit one or two times on the average? How in the world can you be familiar with a subject enough to edit if you just skip-and-hop? (I am hoping someone can tell me.)

Well, I won't make it to admin anytime soon (my case is hopeless) -no matter how qualified I actually am -or dedicated, but at least I don't want you to feel downed or anything, and if you can help me with my question of confusion above -that would be great too. Thx.--GordonWatts 06:47, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ral315, just wanted to point out that I've left a proposed schedule at the subpage of WP:SIGN for our arbcom election series. I know you had some run-ins with GordonWatts and your opposition was influencing me; however, I think the bigger issue now is the early closure and the page protection of this nomination. Features article[edit]

The new Features article is done, at User:The wub/Features. I haven't made any mention of GordonWatts in it for a number of reasons:

  1. I don't really understand what his side of the story is, so I wouldn't be able to present it. (Gordon if you read this I do not want volumes of explanation on my talk page)
  2. I don't think it really needs any more publicity.
  3. It is just a failed nomination, albeit one that the candidate has not taken lying down.
  4. I seriously doubt I could write it from an NPOV standpoint.
  5. Even as I was finishing writing the article Gordon added a huge amount of text to the RfA talk page.

If you (Ral315) decide you want to mention it then I'm perfectly happy for you to add to my article - that's why you're the editor! the wub "?/!" 22:57, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: [2]

"And you have shown a lot of contempt for Raul654, a VERY well-respected editor on Wikipedia." No. I am very glad he helped out a lot initially in the FA-process, even helping edit and stuff, but then when he had promised it would be OK to resubmit Schiavo for FA (see Jimbo's page for details) after a few weeks, he went back on his word, based on concensus; This time, he had the authority to override concensus, and since the article had been fixed, it was ready -and he reneged! The edit war, the only other concern, was over shortly after it began, so I am at the least disappointed in Mark AKA Raul654. He played politics instead of merit, but I am hoping he will "come around" and honor the hard work of the many Schiavo editors -not just me.--GordonWatts 18:36, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message[edit]

Hi, Ral315. Many thanks for your note on my talk page, and especially for the action you took. It's cheering to think that people who don't know me were so concerned. I was asleep when it all happened, so if an edit summary was changed, I don't know what was in the original. I can, however, tell you that my "home address", which the anon inserted into the text of my user page, is definitely not my home address – or anything like it. Also, I think it's quite reasonable that the block was changed to a one-week block, since it's an IP address that others would use, and presumably not one that that user always uses. There was a similar vandalism to my talk page on 19 September, from a different IP address – 202.142.214.52. Thanks again. Ann Heneghan (talk) 23:08, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Don't think we've run into each other before but I was just surfing and came across this site:

I googled the name and came across your page here at Wikipedia. Thought I'd better let you know. You may want to look into it. Thanks a lot, Sarah." SarahPhelpsjr 11:12, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibreak[edit]

I'm taking a wikibreak. In case you wanted to know.

Thx for your past suggestions.

I'm impressed — many admins would have closed the AfD as a vote for merging and then left someone else to do the job (and in this case that someone would have been me, I suspect). Thanks. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 18:38, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship[edit]

I'd like that; can't promise being on RC patrol often, as I've found it does tend to burn me out. Also, my feelings on the light blocking practices currently employed (large part of the burnout) would be voiced in the nomination. :"D - RoyBoy 800 02:39, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You the man! Thanks. 15 and in college, goddam... and I thought I was smart. :'D - RoyBoy 800 02:54, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the answers... and an explanation for the wait is forthcoming. - RoyBoy 800 03:23, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
