Welcome!

Hello, Martin Osterman/Archive1, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at Naming Conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my New-Users' Talk Page.
Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language
Happy editing!

LRT[edit]

No need to apologize. Wikipedia is a maze of twisty passages. I am a Gettysburg afficionado and watch the related pages like a hawk. The reasons I pointed out the LRT edits are (1) The main GB page is getting really long and probably should be broken up by giving each day its own page, so diving into tiny details brings that day closer; (2) Among historians, few get very excited about JLC and LRT. If it hadn't been for The Killer Angels, no one would have heard of them. It was really an accident that brought William Oates to LRT and if he had captured it, it would have had little military consequence. Hal Jespersen 23:32, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sounds like me. LOL. I've been with Wiki not too long, so I hadn't really checked that out. I'm getting ready to move that stuff to the LRT section and de-clutter a bit. I'm also a Civil War afficionado myself, so I'm slowly checking the different War pages looking for any updates and revisions that need to be made. I wish I could call myself more of an afficionado, but I only have the 26-volume Time-Life Civil War set and Shelby Foote's "Narrative" series at my disposal for reference work... Thanks, though! (2) It does make me wonder... Longstreet was uncomfortable with his position and I wonder what would have happened if a) he'd convinced Lee to shift to the south or b) he'd taken his own perrogative and moved more than just one division at that flank. I believe that, had Hood's entire division shifted half a mile south and focused on LRT, the battle would have ended much differently. Things to certainly think about! Thanks for your help -- I look forward to working more with you! --Martin Osterman 01:24, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Stuart[edit]

I checked in Freeman's "Lee's Lieutenants" [which I consider definitive] and Sears' more recent "Chancellorsville" and both agree with you. My apologies; I'll fix. Memory's getting faulty... Hal Jespersen 00:56, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Re:William Crawford Sherrod?[edit]

I removed {{bio-stub}} because there was also a {{US-politician-stub}} tag on it, which basically serves the same purpose as bio-stub except it categorizes the article into a more specific category (a few months ago there were a lot of articles under the bio-stub category, so people from WikiProject Stub sorting and myself worked to clean it out.) Don't worry, the article is still categorized as a stub with US-politician-stub, which still means that it should be expanded. Hope that helps! Robert T | @ | C 15:13, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all. We all have to start somewhere :-). Happy editing! Robert T | @ | C 20:04, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hemlock[edit]

Sorry, I don't usually log in while I'm at work. Generally I just pop in if I happen to have a few minutes to kill. I have no control of what other edits occur with this IP address. I edit as User:Bkonrad when I'm logged in. 192.77.198.12 20:37, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Census Bureau lists it as a CDP, which although not 100% reliable, generally indicates that it is not incorporated as a municipality. The Bureau sometimes fudges things when it describes the entirety of certain townships as CDPs, but that does not appear to be the case here. And it may not reflect recent incoporations or disincorporations, but that is relatively rare and would likly turn up hits in Google. [1] seems entirely unreliable. There is no indication whatsoever of its sources. InfoMI, which is also not entirely reliable, indicates that Hemlock is governed by the township, which would mean it is unincorporated. Cheers. 192.77.198.12 20:51, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A bit of random discussion[edit]

We had talked earlier this year a bit about Little Round Top, and I commented that I wondered what would have happened had Longstreet pressed the issue of shifting around the south flank of the Union Army. I have since gotten my hands on the first two books of the "Gettysburg" series by Newt Gingrich, and I was wondering if you had an opinion on them, especially since I consider you to be one of the really good Civil War historians on Wikipedia? Thanks! --Martin Osterman 19:37, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

I thought the Gingrich/Forstchen trilogy was terrific! [This puts me into the minority when it comes to CW aficionados, alas.] Much better and more realistic than most CW "alternate [sic] histories", real pageturners. Great character studies [Hunt and Haupt in particular, two unsung generals], perfect irony, well thought out strategy. I must treat the tactical premise of book #1 with some trepidation, however. I found it hard to believe that such a significant movement could occur under Meade's nose. And I also believe Meade was smarter than depicted. That 7-corps assault on the Pipe Creek Line [which I have wandered around and it is truly formidable] was not conceivable by a general who had fought at Fredericksburg. But lots of literary fun. Email me if you want a more detailed discussion. [hlj <at> posix.com] Hal Jespersen 21:57, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bounce trailer[edit]

Haven't seen it myself too. Btw, think it's only used in the preview/teaser trailer, had a look at the actual trailer from IMDB and it didn't have the song in it. I can't find the teaser!!! :/ --Andylkl (talk) 07:23, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gratiot County[edit]

Greetings to a fellow (former) Gratiot County resident. If you're interested in improving the Alma/St. Louis/Ithaca/etc. pages, we could perhaps collaborate to find useful history and background. —dcclark (talk) 20:34, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I grew up in Breckenridge, but the last 6 years I've spent in the UP and Canada. I suppose I'm obligated to put in some Huskies/Sharks reference here, but I never cared that much anyhow. ;) —dcclark (talk) 21:54, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Good God, if you were on the Quiz Bowl team, that means we played head-to-head a few dozen times! I was captain at B-ville for two years (98-99 and 99-2000, so we may not have overlapped much). Our team could destroy teams all over the league and invitationals, but somehow lose to St. Louis as often as we won.
Looks like it's a pretty small world indeed! Quiz Bowl was my big thing in High School, nowadays I just hang around Wikipedia. ;) Once the semester's done, I'll think about the Gratiot County-area articles and maybe do a bit of research back there. —dcclark (talk) 16:02, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, I do return to the area pretty often -- my parents still live there. I live in central-lower Ontario nowadays, but after living in the Saginaw Valley for so long, it feels exactly the same. There's a reason I prefer the UP! :P —dcclark (talk) 17:41, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for voting on my RfA. I realize that I have not been here long, however others said I would do just fine as an administrator, so I followed their advice. About resolving issues between other editors, I would not immediately run to a mediator to solve a problem, I would try to work it out. What I meant by 'out of control' was after anything I could have done did not work. You are right about my lack of experience, I feel I have a good idea of Wikipedia policy but as it seems not enough to be an affective administrator. Thank you for your time.

Happy editing!

Johann Wolfgang [ T ...C ] 14:58, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the encouraging the note. If my RfA doesn't pass I wait until I get around 5000 edits and two more months experience. Thank you again for voting. Have a nice day!

mozy.com[edit]

You deleted the article, why? Would you delete the article on ebay.com? or other services? You are very confused if you think I was trying to advertize for them. I was actually hoping that if I started an article more information would be added about this unknown company.

In a additon the article did not break wikipedia's policies: "Wikipedia requires that contributors observe a "neutral point of view" when writing, and not include original research. Neutral point of view, itself a "non-negotiable" policy,[15] articulates the encyclopedia's goal as "representing" disputes, "characterizing" them, rather than engaging in them."[16] If achieved, Wikipedia would not be written from a single "objective" point-of-view, but would fairly present all views on an issue, attributed to their adherents in a neutral way. The policy states that views should be given weight equal to their popularity. This policy has been criticized as having an unattainable goal, being unnecessary with widely discredited material, and allowing the representation of "morally offensive" views.[17] Opinions or theories that have not been previously published are considered "original research", which is not allowed. The "no original research" policy states that such material cannot be properly attributed under neutral point of view, and that editors' own novel ideas or perspectives are not to be introduced.[18]

Wikipedia's contributors additionally maintain a variety of lesser policies and guidelines. In contrast to other wikis of its time, such as Ward Cunningham's Portland Pattern Repository, Wikipedia provides "talk" pages to discuss changes to articles, rather than discussing changes within the article itself. Wikipedia contributors often modify, move, or delete articles that are felt to be inappropriate to an encyclopedia, such as dictionary definitions ("dicdefs") or original source texts.[19] Often, Wikipedia editions establish style conventions."

Please respond. Thank you

I did not delete the article in question, as I am currently not an Administrator or someone with the ability to do so. I merely recommended the article be deleted as it appeared to be an advertisement for the website in question. I did not feel it contained any encyclopedic value whatsoever and it did not follow Wikipedia's guidelines regarding companies.
Regarding eBay -- if you will actually review the eBay article, you will find that the content of that article compared to the article in question was quite different. Where the article on eBay actually has "encyclopedic" content -- such as historical information, information on acquisitions of the company, and controversies etc. -- the article in question was merely a statement of the website's purpose and who founded it.
I appreciate your posting of Wikipedia's policies regarding entries, as I review that information constantly to insure that what I do and what I review meet those standards. However, I encourage you to see WP:CORP for more information on what criterion and guidelines are necessary for a company to have an entry made about it in the encyclopedia.
Finally, I recommend and strongly encourage that you sign yourself up for a proper username and password with Wikipedia. Doing so will make it easier for us to have this conversation and for you to make articles and revisions. If you do have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! --Martin Osterman 20:15, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your support[edit]

Hi, Martin. I just want to thank you very much for supporting my RfA, and to say also that I hope I'll make a good job of it. I'm supposed to be working on an assignment at the moment, and had delayed thanking people, but I'm finding the new rollback button so easy to use that I'm just keeping Wikipedia open on my browser while working on other things, and I thought I'd like to thank at least a few of my supporters while I'm here. Cheers. AnnH (talk) 19:38, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
