Need a WikiMentor

Hi Marek69, I'm a newbie in Wikipedia editing. Well, not exactly a newbie because 2 years ago I was active in fighting vandalism. After 2 years of vacant, I'm coming back with the main missions to help with Wiki-translations and images (since I'm a traveler). I read many of the Wiki guidelines already, but there are tremendous amount of reading and sometimes I'm hoping to find a quicker answer. I remember that you were helpful to me as a newbie 2 years ago, and wondering could you help me out this time too. Or if you could tell me who I should ask for help, that will be superb. which you changed with this edit to read:

The CNN biography reference clearly states, in the opening paragraph,

"He was born in 1920, the second son of Karol Wojtyla (pronounced voy-TIH-wah) Sr., a retired army officer and tailor, and Emilia Kaczorowska Wojtyla, a schoolteacher of Lithuanian descent."

Your changes, as well as replacing the information about his mother' ethnicity, also removed the [referenced] line:

His mother died on 13 April 1929, when he was eight years old.

The edit also broke some references in the process, which AnomieBOT rescued with this edit

My reversion of both of these edits, back to the original, was based on my opinion that the CNN biography was most probably a Reliable Source.

On checking your reference , which was not directly sourced, my thoughts were it was at best speculative.

British Library follow-up

Thank you for participating in the English and Drama Editathon at the British Library on June 4. I hope you enjoyed the day and got something useful out of it.

If you are new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, I hope you had any questions or problems answered and maybe found being a contributor as addictive as many of the regulars do. If you've got any questions or need help, please feel free to ask any of us on our talk page or by e-mail (Fæ, Tom Morris, Sadads, James F., RHaworth,The Land, AdamBMorgan), ask on the British Library collaboration page or through the Wikipedia Help Desk.

If you are interested in working on Wikipedia, you might want to consider joining one of the WikiProjects. These are places where team work between editors interested in a particular topic can be coordinated. Some suggestions for WikiProjects that may be of interest to you as a participant in the event on Saturday include Literature, Poetry orScience Fiction. A full list of literature and language related WikiProjects can be foundhere, and a list of all WikiProjects is here. The WikiProjects often have things that need doing, and if you need help you can often ask in their talk page.

But there are other places you can get involved. If you are interested on working on images, such as improving image descriptions, categorisation or uploading new media, consider getting involved in Wikimedia Commons. Wikisource also needs people willing to help make available original source material, and Wikiquote is trying to compile a directory of quotes which you may be able to contribute to.

If you want to continue some of the work we got started on Saturday, here are a few potential things to help with:

• Following on from work on Ella D'Arcy on Saturday, work has started to make all of The Yellow Book available on Wikisource. If you go to the page on Wikisource and pick a volume then click on 'scan index' you can start helping to proofread pages from the journal - simply click on the page you want to work on, and go through to check that the text on the left reflects the text on the right. If you need any help with getting started, please ask User:Tom Morris.
• If you created any new articles at the event, you might want to submit them to Did you know?.
• If you are able to translate into other languages, why not pick one of the articles we worked on, translate it and post it on another language version of Wikipedia: there are now versions in hundreds of languages. On Wikimedia Commons, it is also possible to provide multilingual descriptions of images and categories: this enables editors on the other language versions to better find images and media files they can use in their project.
• If you need images from the British Library to illustrate articles, please add them to the image requests page. If you would like a British LIbrary curator to help collaborate on an article, please add it to the collaborations page.
• You might also be interested in attending GLAMcamp London.
• To explore more articles related to the British Library, visit Portal:British Library.

Hi. I have never used this software, as it is not available for non-MS systems. But by uneducated guess, this seems to be a bug with the system: Tõrvalds does not exist as a word in any language written on the Internet in 2011 – not even as a town name. --hydrox(talk) 22:10, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Hydrox, I think the problem is with my settings. I was running a couple of extra scripts at the time. I think it was trying to correct the 'Torva' part of the word to Tõrva, a town in Southern Estonia. Most likely my settings, rather than a bug in AWB. I thank you for bring this to my attention. The article was rather good but had some faults in POV, weasel word etc. I also removed your "personalized" format of the gallery (which I anyway I think it'd stay better at Commons) as I found it a bit so-so. :) As for imperial units, I also abhorr them (why only TWO countries in the world are still unable to learn the more intelligent metric ones?), but it's OK if you want to restore them. I think our collaboration was a perfect example of how a good Wikipedia article can finally stem up from side-to-side collaboration and soft-minded goodwill. The two countries you refer to are the USA and the UK, which both use miles, and also happen to contain the majority of English speakers in the English-speaking world. (diagram on right)

In view of this, I think English Wikipedia should cater for the large amount of English readers who are more familiar with miles

This is easily achieved by having a {{convert}} template which will display both kilometres and miles.

This also works the other way round; for articles having only miles, there will be a conversion to km for those more familiar with metric.

AWB - trivial edits

Hi, I believe that edits such as this and this are inconsequential edits, and so fail WP:AWB#Rules of use no. 4, because the File: namespace is exactly equivalent to the Image: namespace, see WP:Namespace#Aliases. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:39, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi RedRose 64, thank you for your message.

Technically, you are correct, the edits you refer to have minimal effect on the articles.

The rule you mention, discourages "only adding or removing some white space, moving a stub tag, converting some HTML to Unicode, removing underscores from piped links, bypassing a redirect, etc." However, I am not simply performing one of these actions; I am running multiple scripts at the same time.

The Image namespace was depreciated early last year and was replaced by the File namespace, as described inWP:Images, so I have added the rename as one of my AWB settings.

My AWB scans do more than just the rename; they also include checking for common typos (as well as custom typo lists), reformatting and consolidating references, checking wikilinks, repairing links to disambiguation pages, adding convert templates, sorting interwikilinks, as well as several other customised scripts, such as list aphabetisation.

One edit may contain one or several of these changes, in a variety of combinations, as in my last few edits:[4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15].

Sometimes there will be more changes made, sometimes less. The examples you refer to are on the lower side.

I don't think that the Image: prefix is deprecated as such - WP:Images states 'The "File:" prefix may be used interchangeably with "Image:":', and has done since before I registered in May 2009 (here is the version that was current then). WP:Namespace states 'The prefix Image: can be used instead of File:', and also 'There are six aliases defined for namespaces: ... Image: (for the "File" namespace) and Image talk: (for the "File talk" namespace)'. There is no actual discouragement of Image: on either of these pages; indeed, phrases such as 'may be used interchangeably with'/'can be used instead of' actively encourage its use. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:08, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Volga River Steamers

Marek 69 can you intercede in a spat-- user Mesoderm is brutalizing the Volga Steamer page. i was doing some light editing with my 179.. id and he claimed it was vandalism. He then took a chainsaw to the page and nominated it for deletion. The guy is out of line and completely bad faith. thanks. [ps the page needs some edits, but shows promise]

Hi Marek, I am Silvena Rowe and have no idea whats is going on! Am most alarmed as the info on the page with my name on is incorrect! I did get married in 1996 not 1986! Also that same person added info of my husband and two sons, which I do not want there! Dear Marek69,

Since I know you live in the UK, it's morning over here, and I thought you might like some rich tea biscuits and tea to help you start off the day  :-{). I was wondering, I would really love to join some WikiProjects now that I'm semi-active on Wikipedia. How do you join a WikiProject? Do you just put your name down, or is there a more complicated method? Also, I was wondering, once you join a WikiProject, are there any specific things you have to do, and are you expected to participate actively within that wikiproject? I am currently semi-retired, and I won't be around all the time, so if you, let's say, join WikiProject Italy or WikiProject Architecture, do you have to actively edit/contribute to related articles, or can you just be a member anyway?

Normally joining a WikiProject is no more complicated than adding your name to a list of participants.

Obviously it is a good idea to actively particpate to the articles covered by the Wikiproject, however it is not compulsory to be continuously active in any particular project, as with the rest of Wikipedia.

If you are away for a length of time you may just be marked as inactive.

Biting??

Just wanted to let you know that I felt that you were biting a new editor (Mighyodonuts). I tagged the article for speedy deletion and the user for COI and username violation. He then blanked the content of the page, except the CSD tag (good thing), and you gave him a level 4 warning for vandalism. I just think that is extreme. Hi Jsfouche, thank you for letting me know about this.

It was certainly not my intention to 'bite' anyone. I saw this edit by user: Mighyodonuts (talk · contribs) and took it for page blanking.

I reverted it with Huggle, which also leaves an appropriate template message on the users talk page.

Unlike Twinkle, where the user decides on the level of warning, Huggle looks for previous template warnings and then gives the next level template, accordingly. As I left a level 4 warning, the user must have previously got to level 3 with his warnings.

I'm not sure if COI templates should be really be included in this count, maybe that is worth further discussion with the Huggle developers...

However, thank you for removing my template, which in hindsight does look a little harsh. Perhaps I should have just reverted and not left a warning?

I am also thinking maybe I should not have reverted at all, but at first glance the edit did look very much like substantial 'unexplained removal of content/page blanking'.

I would like to say that there was definitely no intention on my part to 'bite' anybody, as I am acutely aware of this problem and its negative effects on Wikipedia.

I thank you for bringing this to my attention and for your help in the matter.

1969 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Hi, you restored my edit(s) to the article specified in your dicussion post. I'm sorry for not being clearer but LOOK AT THE TITLES. These storms are not real. They've been copied and pasted from other seasons and the people don't even attempt to change the titles. I just saw a storm in the 1969 atlantic hurricane season that says Tropical Depression 29http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_Atlantic_hurricane_season#Tropical_Depression_Twenty-Nine .

Thats not a real storm in ANY season. Not even in the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season. I do have an account but I haven't logged in for so long I doubt I'll remember the password (and yes I'm aware of password recovery but that takes time and frankly my IP address serves as identification enough). Now, if you would be so kind as to reassess your re-installment of the season (and maybe check out the seasons surrounding it because I had to clear up suspicious activity in the 1967 and 1968 season, that would be wonderful. That is a link to an official hurdat on NOAA's site. As I'm sure you know, the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmostpheric Administration) is in charge of the NHC (National Hurricane Center) which is where nearly all of the information on wikipedia about the statistics of the storms (directly or behind the scenes) comes from. Therefore, the source is both trustable and official. Hurdat stands for hurricane data. This one is basically a log of all the officially recognized data about each storm since the 1850's. When it comes down to it, this hurdat is what calls the shots. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please restore my edit and feel free to search the articles.

Oh, and so you know, the articles I have been searching since 1950 contained uncited statistical information much of which is made up. Wind speeds are off for many storms as are barometric pressures (and some storms which never had a recorded barometric pressure suddenly have one on wikipedia). Remember that this hurdat contains that information with and official air. Please feel free to ask me other questions. It is now hurricane season and we need to tighten up this information.
