Curious about a GA nomination[edit]

Mackensen,

You are a Wikipedian whom I admire greatly and really look up to, and I've really enjoyed all my interactions with you over the years. I've been contributing DYKs for quite some time now, and I know you have as well, but I was really inspired by your successful GA nomination of the article Turboliner a few months ago. Long story short, I've never successfully nominated an article for GA before, and I think that that should be my next step in my continued development as a Wikipedian. I'm curious if you might be interested in co-nominating an article with me, as I know you've had a few successful GA nominations in the past. I thought perhaps one of my previous railroad-related DYKs might be a good choice, namely Zephyrette or Zephyrette (train); I also have another DYK nomination on the GE steam turbine locomotives in the works right now. If you think another article (ie, not one I created) would be a better idea, I'd be game for that as well. And if you simply don't have the time for or interest in my proposition, I'll completely understand. I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. All the best!

  • @Michael Barera: First of all I'm flattered by your note and let me say that it's been a pleasure to work with you over the last few years. I'm interested, but let me acknowledge (and you can see from my recent contributions) that I'm busy in real life right now. A GA nomination is a somewhat solitary endeavor: once you've nominated the article it's up to the reviewer to provide feedback, to which you can then respond. You don't need my help for that, although I'd certainly participate during the review. As for which article to nominate I think all three are long enough but I'd worry about the reliance on non-published railfanning sources for the two Zephyrettes. The hardest part about getting Turboliner up to GA status was removing such sources (especially forum posts). That review was also unusually thorough. I think GE steam turbine locomotives is a strong candidate, although you'll want to add individual page numbers for the Solomon books. Are you familiar with Harvard-style notation (cf {{Harvard citation no brackets}})? It's helpful in these cases, and easier on the reader than {{rp}}. @Michael Barera: You're welcome. As you can see I'm looking over the sources for the turbine article now (I own Solomon's UP book, and can read the other on Google). I do have one concern so far relating to a potential GA nomination. The paraphrasing from Solomon's GE and EMD book is really close--phrases, concepts, structure. I think it could stand another rewrite, shortening the language and distilling Solomon's arguments. I may do so myself, but I mention it. Mackensen (talk) 14:20, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Louisiana Soul[edit]

Questioning the rationale for deleting the Louisiana Soul page? Are you saying that every minor league in North America does not meet Wiki standards? Are you deleted the other Universal Basketball Association team pages that have far less information? Or the more than a dozen other "minor" leagues? How does one of these leagues actually meet standards? I've done work on several. TheScottDL (talk) 19:18, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't have any views on semi-pro basketball. The article was proposed for deletion by Tavix (talk · contribs) on June 5. Under that system an article is tagged and is deleted after seven days by an uninvolved administrator if no one objects. The objection doesn't have to be substantive; removing the tag is sufficient. By the same token, after the article has been deleted, it may be restored automatically on request. I've done so. Best, Mackensen (talk) 20:19, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @TheScottDL:, I am the one that proposed Louisiana Soul to be deleted. When it comes to teams, the notability "standard" that Wikipedia uses is WP:ORG. A team is notable if it "has been the subject of significant coverage in secondary sources. Such sources must be reliable, and independent of the subject. A single independent source is almost never sufficient for demonstrating the notability of an organization." You can see WP:ORGDEPTH for an explanation of that. I proposed Louisiana Soul for deletion because I felt like that team didn't meet this criteria. There's a few sources, but most of them are primary sources (team twitter, website, etc.) and Youtube isn't a reliable source because anyone could add a Youtube video. I'd suggest reading over WP:RS, which explains how to identify whether a source is reliable. Then, go through the leagues that you've done work on and add the necessary sources so someone else doesn't propose them for deletion. Let me know if you have any questions because I'm here to help!   • The article wasn't an expired prod, it was PRODed and shortly thereafter I tagged it for CSD as a BLP violation, which is the rationale you cited upon deletion. Restoring it restores the BLP problem. Maybe a better way to go is for Juno to copy the material to work on it offline first? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:04, 25 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The COI issues[edit]

Hi Mackensen. You wrote that you are not sure what the COI issues are. I work broadly on COI and advocacy issues in Wikipedia, mostly on issues raised at WP:COIN but elsewhere as I encounter them as well. COI issues are complicated here due to the very high value WP places on privacy/anonymity. (I have some thoughts on this on my userpage if you are interested). Because of that, I generally handle COI issues in a relational, non-confronting way - as education more than enforcement. This approach generally works well - people are generally happy to cooperate to ensure that Wikipedia content is neutral and the public can trust us.

One of the thornier aspects of COI, is when editors come to Wikipedia who are primarily interested in promoting their own RW publications and views. This happens pretty frequently. Many experts start out this way and then learn to broaden their approach and become very valued contributors. Some experts come here intent only on promoting their own papers or views, and end up leaving when they cannot do what they wanted to. Our essay WP:EXPERT provides a great orientation for new experts, if you are not aware of it.

I first encountered Praeceptor on Bowman v. Monsanto Co.... what started as a discussion and unheated content dispute turned.. difficult when I realized that this was a case of an expert citing himself and giving lots of WEIGHT to his own views, which on that case are somewhat idiosyncratic. Situations where COI and content disputes mix have a great danger of going sideways and I generally avoid getting involved in specific content when I am communicating with an editor about their COI and vice versa. So in this case, i raised it as gently as I could on their Talk page. GregJackP got upset about that, and has taken the view that I am trying to push Praeceptor away, neither of which is what I am trying to do. In my view Praeceptor is kind of borderline - does some very good work, but doesn't pay enough mind to OR and VERIFY and tends to give too much WEIGHT to his own views. I am hopeful he will become one of those experts who come fully in line with our policies and guidelines; that would be wonderful.

Working on COI can be controversial, for many reasons. An editor with whom I addressed a COI issue just raised a case about it at Arbcom (!) and at the same time, a case was opened at ANI about other COI matters and I others were working on. At arbcom one of the arbs suggested I step back from COI matters for a while to get community feedback, and I agreed to do that. That is what GregJackP was referring to on the Talk page.

Twilight Shoreliner image[edit]

I just came across this image which was miscategorized on Commons. I've tentatively identified it as the Twilight Shoreliner; I don't believe there was any other NEC service operating at the time that would have had two MHCs and a baggage car. However, that doesn't jive with the text of the article, which claims the MHCs and baggage cars went away in 2001. Got any suspicions whether it's my ID, the uncited article, or the claimed date of the photo that's wrong? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:12, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Van den Bossche takes fantastic pictures, doesn't he? He's pretty reliable so I'd believe the date. We have other 2002 pictures from him in Boston so it fits. I think it's much more likely that the claim in our article is erroneous railfan lore. The time's an odd fit. Per this you'd expect a northbound Twilight Shoreliner in after 6 AM. Local sunrise in Boston in April 2002 was 5:44 AM. If the camera was GMT maybe it's plausible that it's just late and it's cloudy. The thing is, this could also be a Fast Mail. I've no idea what one looked like. The defining characteristic of a Twilight Shoreliner is the branded Viewliner, and we can't see one on this photo. Most images I've seen do show the sleeper on the back. See also [1], which has a very similar picture to Peter's, complete with MHC in 2003 (and I think an Amfleet in Capstone livery). Wow, great find on that picture. I knew you were the right person to ask. GMT plus a late train fits the provided time stamp; the Fast Mail didn't arrive until around 11am if I recall which wouldn't match anything (the shadows also indicate mid-morning). Based on what you found, I'm comfortable labeling it as the Twilight Shoreliner. Now I wish I could fix the article, but finding sources other than ten-year-old listservs is proving difficult. Secondarywaltz[edit]

What was your involvement in the switch-over of Michigan Amtrak station infoboxes by Secondarywaltz out of curiosity? What he did was not consistent with other Amtrak station pages on wiki, and not only that, but some of the replacements he did for the lines aren't even correct. For instance, he lists all stations on the Blue Water service northeast of Battle Creek as being on the Michigan Line, when they are in fact not on that line. So, he didn't even get the changes he sought to make correct. Is there a way to convince him to revert this, or will I have to get into a reversion war? Admins have a degree of leeway when it comes to csd which is given so that we can prosecute an article to the best of our ability based on the evidence at hand. I believe that you you know what I'm talking about, since you are also an admin. In my case, when dealing with deletions tagged as copyright violations, I make my decision on how to proceed based largely on the history of the article: if there is sufficient history to suggest that the article could be salvaged, I prefer to tag as a copyright violation and let the CIU deal with it, but if its a new page and the history is entirely copyright violation-related material I'll axe. In this case, lacking the context you provided, I can see why the deletion was the more preferable of the two options, however its possible that the two vague similar articles will continue to co-exist if the copyright can be addressed. I've seen two similar articles on subject material co-exist for years here - Bikini atomic experiments and Operation Crossroads, and for reasons that escape me they got along fine until just recently. I should think if the copyright gets cleaned up the other two articles will get along fine as well.

As an added bonus here though, if the material is in a constant low level edit war, this could help close the war by allowing admins to catch one of the two parties repeatedly attempting to re-add copyrighted material, which would be grounds for a permanent block. If such a course of action nets us a permanent solution to an ongoing problem then it could be worth it to take the long route as opposed to the short route. All the same, if you want to re-tag for csd and wait for a deletion-minded admin to come along, I'd be ok with that too. TomStar81 (Talk) 18:48, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @TomStar81: I hope you'll understand, based on my initial reply, why I've reinstated the deletion tag. There's only one subject, shared between two articles. This article started as a copy/paste move, which was then overwritten with copyvios. The responsible user has been banned. We're now cleaning up the mess: Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Oanabay04. Deletion is the only possible outcome under the copyright cleanup procedures. Rather than just revert my edit to this page could you please add citation needed where these references are requested. It will make it more obvious where they should be solved. The infobox gives the line length as 118 miles; however, the KML that I'll be adding shortly is 141 miles. Is the 118 miles only from Remsen to Lake Placid? if so, we might want to distinguish between the length of track owned, and the length of service.   • Yes, because the infobox is more about the company than the service. On reflection that doesn't make sense, but I was writing short-line stubs at the time and that's where my head was. Swapping in {{infobox rail service}} might make more sense. Alternatively, the text could state the actual lengths in play (it does mention the trackage rights between Utica and Remsen). Good catch! Hi, and thank you for fixing all the copyright violations on train articles. I am about to get the book by Drury, that the violations came from. If I paraphrase the stuff from the book, and add other information from newspapers, and train websites and so on, would it still be a copyright violation? Thanks for what you have done. I am the user that just edited the Amtrak Acela page. It is not high speed rail. It travels the 456 miles from Boston to Washington in 7 hours which is 65.1 mph. You can say the train cars are high speed, but the track, bridges, tunnels and overhead lines are what is limiting the system. You shouldn't have deleted the sideline reporter from the Arizona Bowl. Monica McNutt WILL be the sideline reporter for the game. Do you know where 506sports gets their bowl game info from? ME! I have supplied 98% of ALL collegiate broadcast assignments ALL SEASON. Before trying to be pompous about it by relying on an OUTDATED resource, you should ask where the information was shared. In this case, the Arizona Bowl THEMSELVES said Monica McNutt has been added as a sideline reporter, and they did so on Sunday. Next time CONTACT the individual who made the change instead of assuming it is incorrect.

About "Hi-Level"[edit]

Hello, I am にび三郎(Nibi Saburo in English). I want you ask you about your revert at Hi-Level.

You reverted my edit at Hi-Level, which was adding a image of a Amtrak's Pacific Parlour Car. I think that image file is helpful because there are no Hi-level fleets in regular service except them now. So I added that image at the History#Amtrak section, which refers to the Pacific Parlour Car.

  • @にび三郎: Hello! It's a question of spacing. On a normal resolution computer the image flows into the Notes section, which doesn't look right to me. There's already an interior image of the Parlour Car in the article, and if someone wants to see more images there's a linked curated gallery on Commons at Hi-Level_passenger_cars. That was my reasoning, at any rate. I wouldn't be opposed to replacing the Heartland Flyer image with the Parlour Car image, but I do think there's value in showing the Hi-Levels mixed in with Superliners. The entirety of the article was "Sam Pilgrim (June 4, 1990) is a professional mountain bike rider from Colchester, UK. In 2013 he placed 3rd at Red Bull Joyride in Whistler, B.C." Adam9007 (talk · contribs) tagged it for deletion on the grounds that the article didn't assert a claim of notability. I agreed, and deleted it. There's nothing presumptively notable about being a professional mountain bike rider. There's nothing in the article as written about being the 2013 FMB World Tour Champion, nor a description of what that is. (Help me out here, I'm an American football fan but know nothing about competitive biking). There's not much to restore here. I'm happy to undelete in the article namespace with the understanding that Rileyschneider (talk · contribs) will quickly add some cited information supporting a claim of notability. Fictional conflict infobox[edit]

Can you please restore the fictional conflict infobox template? It looks identical to the military conflict infobox, but there are some differences in the technical side. In at least one instance, the use of the military conflict infobox for fictional conflicts has skewed some statistical analysis programs that someone was using for an off-wiki research project. Thanks for the additional background information. I don't think that this move is uncontroversial. I appreciate the importance of avoiding the use of capital letters where it is inappropriate. Headbomb (talk · contribs) changed the capitalisation of the name in the lead of this article earlier today, describing the change as "ce", by which I assume they mean copy edit. After this I had made several edits to try and update information on the page, including restoring the capital T for the mid-title instance of "The". Perhaps Headbomb (talk · contribs) had not understood that the name of the article was representing a proper name. We put journals in titlecase regardless of how they style themselves. This is why Physica Status Solidi is there, and not at physica status solidi (which is how they style themselves). About your deletion of the Brough Family Organization[edit]

I've been informed that you recently deleted the Brough Family Organization. After viewing the debate page I believe there was no "consensus to delete" the page and therefore wonder why you deleted it. If one goes online and uses Google or Bing to search for the Brough Family Organization (or Richard Brough Family Organization) he or she will find multiple references and publications referring to the organization. In fact the organization hosts a "Publicity" page that contains links to some of these sources: http://www.broughfamily.org/publicity.html.   • I disagree; there was a clear consensus to delete at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brough Family Organization (2nd nomination). That the same IP address made three separate keep arguments doesn't change that. Editors who participated in the discussion didn't find the organization notable. The IP made various assertions but didn't offer any evidence to support them. I couldn't have closed the debate any other way, and I decline to reverse myself. It's probably a one-day disruption in service for a train which has run since at least 1974, and in a sense since the 1930s depending on your point of view. It's also in no way the first derailment; the Southwest Limited derailed in October 1979 (that one actually killed two people). Coverage of this incident will be routine. SLE rolling stock[edit]

You're doing some absolutely great work digging up sources on these, but I'm not sure that some of your table removals were necessary. I think having images in the table is good - they serve as a nice visual reference that wouldn't fit as inline images in the section - and I'd like to keep the build date column in addition to the acquisition date. I know having unit numbers is somewhat contentious as to Wikipedia not being a foamer guide, but I'd also like to think about including those. I've certainly found that listing useful for MBTA Commuter Rail when it comes to identifying locomotives in the photos I'm putting on Commons. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 16:59, 26 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Roster sections attract the worst sort of trivial foaming and I want to keep it out if at all possible. I think in lieu of the 100x100 images I'd like to see a couple proper thumbnails showing the SLE in action. The article's not hurting for images after all. Thanks for re-adding those. I can compromise on the images given that there's enough space in the article for thumbnails of all the equipment elsewhere (compared to MBTA for example, where there's no way you'd properly integrate almost two dozen equipment images). On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.
