What are the four general rules at Wikipedia?
The four general rules are to respect your fellow Wikipedians, remain neutral, cite your sources, and to ignore a rule if it prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia.
How do I edit a page?
  1. Click 'Edit this page' or 'Edit' on the top of the page that you want to edit.
  2. Make your changes in the edit window.
  3. Preview your changes by clicking the 'Show preview' button.
  4. Click the 'Save page' button.

Why can't I edit some particular pages?
Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them.

What are references, sources, and citations all about?
All claims must be supported by a book, website, or news organization independent of the subject of the article. The source must be reliable, meaning it cannot be a blog, MySpace page, or personal website. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to prove that an inaccurate statement is true, and that it should stay in the article. The policy regarding this states that the statement has to be verifiable, not necessarily true. See Wikipedia:Verifiability for more information.
How do I insert a reference into an article?

For inline references:

  1. Do a search on Ask.com, Google, or your preferred search engine for the subject of the article that you want to put a reference in.
  2. Click 'Edit this page' or 'Edit' in the Wikipedia article, and insert a claim into that article stating a fact about the subject. Don't click the save button just yet.
  3. In the search you did in step 1, find a website that supports the claim you made in step 2. Highlight the address in the address bar (where it says http://www.some-website.com/some-page.htm).
  4. Go to the reference generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out the as many fields as you can. Then click 'Get reference wiki text'.
  5. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text.
  6. In the article, after the claim you made in step 2, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied in step 5.
  7. If the article does not have a References, Footnotes, Notes, or Bibliography section, then add this below the See Also section and above the External Links section:

For references put at the end of an article:

Getting unblocked[edit]

I have been trying for days to upload a simple page describing the organisation I work for. It is a reputable organisation that is a joint venture between the University of Tasmania and a government department. For an unknown reason I've been blocked. Given Wikipedia's bizaar rules and the reems of useless "help" menus I find it incredible that there are any entries. You haven't been blocked directly. If your IP address has been blocked then please follow the instructions on the block message to post an unblock request here. Have you read any of the advice given in your repeated article creation requests? It seems you need more third-part references about your organisation. Have you had a look at WP:ORG about what we require for an article about an organisation? Have you read WP:COI about writing about your own organisation, and why it should be left to others? --Stephen 00:36, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Conflict of interest"!! I work for this organisation as Communications Manager. I'm just trying to put up a simple description of it on Wikipedia. After that, anybody can have a go. What conflict? I don't get anything out of this I'm just doing my job -- or trying to. I didn't think one had to spend months learning some arcane language and rules just to add an item to this site. Having "volunteers" as doorkeepers is all very nice but just means that people you don't know, who have no training or knowledge of a subject, have complete control over what gets added to Wikipedia. Hardly democratic or open source. Its more like the Masonic Lodge than a virtual community. --Liam Gash (talk) 00:56, 9 December 2010 (UTC) As you can probably tell I am somewhat frustrated. I am a very experience PC user and I've designed websites for many years as part of my job. However, I find this system overly complicated, arbitrary and one-size-fits-all. I can send the page I've put together to someone else, a 'third party', to put up but that wouldn't change the content. All this structure seems stuck in the days of DOS. Please read the following. Editing articles as a 'communications manager' is clearly against wikipedia policy

The article Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

All sorts of issues here, notability is a concern, however the article's main contributor has a massive COI, see User_talk:Liam_Gash#Conflict_of_interest, potential copyright violation problems (see copy paste tag), promotional tone.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Suggestion[edit]

Hi. It is possible to contribute to wikipedia, in a positive way, even if you have a conflict of interest. But to do so, one must put in the time and effort to learn about wikipedia. There are indeed complicated policies and guidelines. May I suggest you take a step back and pause for a bit. What is most important then is to study and learn about copyright violation and reliable sources. Wikipedia has a strong guideline about not biting newcomers, but you have, sorry to say, worn out your newcomer status by trying to get this article online multiple times without first studying and fixing the problems many have pointed out to you. It may be that the subject you are writing about is notable, and it may be that it is not notable. The community of wikipedia decides notablity, via consensus. The best way to help the community decide is by providing a neutral small starter article that is backed up by multiple secondary sources.     Eclipsed   (talk)   (code of ethics)     04:09, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have written an entry for the Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research. I work for this organisation but I have been painstaking in writing the content in a neutral tone. I have provided a number of external links and the copy is all original. If any copying and pasting has taken place it is because I prefer to work off-line and then paste into Wikipedia.
To just delete this entry because it is an employee of TIAR that is writing it seems to me to be completely artbitrary and vindictive. Surely this entry can be judged on the content and not on who wrote it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.217.6.8 (talk) 04:10, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Deletion of an article is not really a worry. If the subject is notable, then it will be possible to find good reliable sources that could support recreation. But the current article has many problems. You had the right idea to go through the articles for creation system, but it was a very bad idea to go against the multiple reviews given to the article by neutral parties. This is why you find yourself in this 'situation'. Better would be to continue working on the article within articles-for-creation, and find independent sources to support notability. You've got me. You've won. I have tried earnestly to provide some information about TIAR for Wikipedia but at every turn the unseen "editors" have knocked me back. Well, I give up. Now I know how Wikipedia was built. If you have no relation at all to a subject and know nothing about it, fine, put up your rantings. But if you actually know about a subject because you are part of it, oh no, conflict of interest. Well you win.
