Fair use rationale for Image:Wolfgang album.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Wolfgang album.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2007, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 20:10, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Kguirnela. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Csabcoatofarms.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Kguirnela. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 23:13, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Can you let me know why you deleted a perfectly good chunk of material I had put up onto the Garryowen page? The article is now much more balanced and includes more of the early history, rather than just being a brief history of its connection with the US Army. --hydeblake 11:50, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello, let's be clear about that, I didn't DELETE any material, I simply REVERTED the article back to its original state before your edits. It seems all your additions are not supported by in-line citations. Don't worry, I won't revert it back anymore, but do append citations to your edits. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 03:01, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

That's fine - by a request for in-line citations to be included would be better than deleting without any explanation!

Can't you read? It wasn't deleted, it was reverted. It's a simple task of reverting it back and appending your citations. And please sign your posts. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 08:18, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

What a silly question – of course I can read! That is why I put things into an online encyclopaedia! Delete or revert – same difference. You removed something without thinking about what you were doing. My original point still stands: if you had asked for in-line citations or referencing, then that would have been a far better way of doing it instead of removing the text. I know how to revert - which is exactly what I did after your actions, which I think were unthoughtful and unnecessary. --hydeblake 14:24, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Well now... when you made those edits, you were an unregistered user. How could I "request" you for in-line citations when you might be using a dynamic IP? Now it seems you are a registered user, so your contributions will be "respected" by other usrs. What else do you want me to say? If you feel offended, I should tell you that this sort of thing happens all the time, don't let it affect you, simply revert the edit if you find it out of place and go on with your contributions. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 07:09, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm, interesting. Actually I was registered and if you look at the History log, you'll see that for yourself! --hydeblake 08:32, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Ooops. My bad. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 08:42, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Dear sir,

This is regarding my edit to the article Balut.

Earlier today you sent a message to me asking why I persist in adding irrelevant information to the said article. (Italics yours.)

Perhaps it did not come to your notice that my edit was merely an additional response to an existing fact contained within the said article, which is as follows:

  • The Filipino and Malay word balut(balot) roughly translates to mean "wrapped".

In conjunction with the above sentence, I added the following sentence so that no confusion may arise among the uninformed as to the usage of the word balut mentioned in the above sentence:

  • However, Malays have never taken the word to mean "duck foetus" and, being Muslims, they do not eat balut, even though this food is technically halal.

The edit is thus, in my opinion, relevant to the article.

I patiently await your thoughts on this matter.

Yours sincerely,

161.142.96.106 16:57, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

That is exactly the reason why I removed the reference to the Malay language. however, you did revert the edit again. If you are committed to contributing to Wikipedia, please register and create a user account so your edits may be credited directly to you and not so some unknown dynamic IP. It also lends credibility to your edits. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 03:18, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your response.

It is true, however, that Malay shares the word balut with Tagalog, and that they both mean the same thing, "to wrap". I thought it was an interesting titbit of etymology.

I propose retaining the original sentence: The Filipino and Malay word balut(balot) roughly translates to mean "wrapped".

Patiently awaiting your thoughts.

Yours sincerely,

161.142.96.180 07:22, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

(Sigh). You seem determined to include that tidbit of etymology. I give up. =) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 08:05, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, at least we have something in common. Haha. Speaking of which...do you eat balut? I can't imagine what it tastes like. Dying to know.

161.142.97.206 10:08, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Yup, you can see the user box on balut on my user page. Tastes good, but quite filling; the most I can eat in one sitting is two. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 02:26, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Translation Request 2

Greetings Kguirnela!

Can you please help me translate these passages into the unique Hiligaynon language?

"Receiving the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in tongues, is the guarantee of our inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven".
"Water baptism is the sacrament for the remission of sins and for regeneration. The baptism takes place in natural living water, such as the river, sea, or spring. The Baptist, whom has already received baptism of water and the Holy Spirit, conducts the baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the person receiving the baptism should be completely immersed in water with head bowed and face downward".
"The sacrament of feet washing enables one to have a part with the Lord Jesus. It also serves as a constant reminder that one should have love, holiness, humility, forgiveness and service. Every person who has received water baptism should have their feet washed in the name of Jesus Christ. Mutual feet washing is practiced whenever is appropriate".
"The Holy Communion is the sacrament to commemorate the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. It enables us to partake of the flesh and blood of our Lord and to be in communion with Him so that we can have eternal life and be raised on the Last Day. This sacrament should be held as often as possible. Only one unleavened bread and grape juice is used".
"The Sabbath day, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), is a Holy Day, blessed and sanctified by God. It is observed under the Lord's grace for the commemoration of God's creation and salvation and with the hope of eternal rest in the life to come".

Your help would be very Gratefully Appreciated, Thankyou very much. --Jose77 05:21, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I'll be translating this soon.=) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 01:21, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Hello Kguirnela. I am a bureaucrat on the Māori Wikipedia, and we have just blocked Jose77, because, as he has admitted on my talk page User talk:Kahuroa, he uses many account names and other tactics to get people to translate for him - it is up to you but I don't think he should be encouraged. Kahuroa 11:10, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I see. If you think such behavior should not be encouraged, I will abide by that opinion. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 03:12, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
It is really entirely up to you - he has now given reasons for the use of multiple names which may make sense - that he is well-known in his field and does this to avoid embarrassment. He has been unblocked, so you should decide on what you feel is right. Kahuroa 05:35, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok then, thanks for the heads-up. =) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 11:05, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Greetings Kguirnela, now that my issue with User:Kahuroa has been resolved I hope you could resume helping me translate those passages into the Hiligaynon language. Thanks in advance. (The reason why Kahuroa gave you that message was because I was using a public computer at the University Campus which had a fixed IP Address. As we all know, these public computers are often manipulated by vandals and hence he suspected that I was the one causing the vandalism. Nevertheless the problem has now been resolved after I gave him the correct explanation. I hope you can understand.) --Jose77 08:26, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh i see. Very well, i may get around to it after a while. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 09:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Kguirnela,

The Hiligaynon Test-Wikipedia had been created a few months ago. However no native speaker has discovered the site yet. I hope you can also help contribute to the test-wiki.

Why do you delete GoBacolod.com?

Why do you delete our site Gobacolod.com in the Bacolod City profile? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emjoven (talkcontribs)

Please read the message I left you in your talk page. And please sign your posts. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 09:05, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Gobacolod.com complies with the wikipedia's policy.

I have read the Spam policy and I don't see a reason for you to delete our site on the Bacolod City profile, we have original content that cannot be published on Wikipedia.

Please Point to me where we violate the policy and I will no longer include our site in Wikipedia.

Thanks.

Please read Wikipedia:External links#Links normally to be avoided. It is my opinion that your external link falls under the third, fourth and fifth categories on that list, however, you may consult a second opinion; any experienced and trusted Wikipedian who may support your desire to add your link in the Bacolod City article. Please sign your posts using four tildes. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 09:22, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the external links you added to the page Bacolod City do not comply with our guidelines for external links. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --- Tito Pao 10:20, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Additional comments The title of the page itself is a giveaway: Gobacolod.com - Online Community of Bacolod City. In other words, a forum/portal that requires registration and where members who signed up can contribute content ("Links to social networking sites (such as MySpace), discussion forums or USENET.") Clearly not allowed; I deleted a lot of similar links myself. Anyone can submit content on the article and pass it of as a legitimate "news" item. If this was the official link to Bacolod City's city government, I would let it go. Also, per WP:RSEX, "Material from bulletin boards and forum sites, Usenet, wikis, blogs and comments associated with blog entries should not normally be used as sources. These media do not have adequate levels of editorial oversight or author credibility and lack assured persistence." It's not clear how well-moderated this site is, plus the fact that it contains a forum also helps with this consideration. Thanks --- Tito Pao 10:53, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Heheheh...I noticed you made two RFPs for two related articles at about the same time I wrote one myself. Looks like there's a connection between the first week of classes and an increase in vandalism for Philippine-related articles ;-) --- Tito Pao 10:16, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Rivermaya.PNG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Rivermaya.PNG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:51, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Thenewdawn.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Thenewdawn.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Re: Pugad Baboy Sunday Comics

I don't know, but I'm sure it's on sale on some if not all bookstores here in Manila. I've picked up my copy back in December. - 上村七美 | talk 12:50, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm... not a shadow of it down here. =) Okay, thanks. I'll have to pull some strings over there. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 12:53, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
If that's the case, then let me create the article for Benigno Ramos: Bounty Hunter. I'm making it right now in my sandbox. - 上村七美 | talk 16:14, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Of course; however, it's gonna be a spoiler for me. hehe. Btw, how much is it? The book I mean... =) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 03:19, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
About P399.95 when I bought it. - 上村七美 | talk 09:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello there, I couldn't help noticing your quest to find PBSC. National Bookstore in Shangri-La Mall in EDSA is full of copies right now. Sadly they are missing Pugad Baboy 10, the only one I lack in my collection. Hope this helps! Nintenboy01 21:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the heads-up. It's ironic, all National Bookstores here in Bacolod are chock-full of the large-format Pugad Baboy X's. I could send you a copy via LBC (after you deposit the appropriate amount in my bank account of course. hehe.) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 02:10, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Actually, that's not a bad idea at all. I'll try snooping around the Metro a bit more first though. Maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks. Nintenboy01 03:36, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

San Lorenzo Ruiz - Obando Fertility Rites

Hi, mind enlightening me what relationship San Lorenzo Ruiz has with Obando Fertility Rites? -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 02:05, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, pardon me. I should have written a note to you (I forgot/wanted to have dinner/hungry). Well, I added it there sometime ago because the article is related to "saints and the Philippines" (well, in my opinion only). The Obando Fertility Rites article has a section on saints (although they are not Filipinos). But it is worth enlightening a reader about the many faces of the Catholic religion in the Philippines. Dragonbite 02:12, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm... good enough for me. =) My first instinct was to remove the link since IMHO, the article should have links to Filipino saints alone, to achieve focus. I'm leaving the link as is, of course. Thanks! -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 02:21, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

My Image

Are you are some kind of arrogant image police? I know what sort of fruit it is. Put the image back. You shouldn't delete things done by experienced editors w/o some sort of discussion - it wan't like I was say the fruit is poison or a racist. I will take another shot with a ruler in front of it if you insist. Albatross2147 09:09, 28 July 2007 (UTC) Albatross2147

Wow, you are one touchy dude. And who said anything about being a racist? And I don't insist on you putting a ruler in front of the fruit to prove a point. Arrogance? If I were that arrogant, I would not have bothered to post the initial message on your talk page. Be civil to your fellow wikipedians. If you believe I was mistaken, you can always undo my edit. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 02:06, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Oakwood Mutiny

Could you return the reference made to Capt. Faeldon. The sources have been put in the discussion page. Please also note my comment on the term "mutiny." Since the cases are still under trial, both in the Regional Trial Court, Branch 148 in the sala of Judge Pimentel and the General Court Martial No. 1, the term to be used should be "alleged mutiny." After all, the term "alleged" apears before the word "corruption" in describing the Arroyo administration. Dont you think we should be fair to both sides?

Irwinrommel's comment seems also valid. Trillanes and Maestrecampo were very vocal on television regarding the name "Magdalo." They both said that it was the press that dubbed them that. They never used that term. At least not until Trillanes ran for senator.

T.rebelyell 13:57, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

The word "alleged" has been added before the word "mutiny". "Bagong Katipuneros" has replaced the "Magdalo" label, and a reference to Captain Faeldon's statement has been included. All the given references have been incorporated. Just one stumbling block: the page http://www.pilipino.org.ph/opinion_faeldon4.php, primary source for most of the text moved to the talk page is a copyrighted page. We may not reproduce the content from there verbatim. As a compromise, an external link to that page has been added. It is also used as a primary reference and appears as a footnote. I hope this is satisfactory. Btw: is the article accurate in portraying the sixteen-rayed-sun flag as the actual symbol used by the Bagong Katipuneros?-- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 04:16, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
I have contacted the managers of the pilipino.org site to give their permission, they will contact this site directly. The sixteen rayed flag is accurate.
As for your editing: Beautifully done.

Good News!

The Request for Hiligaynon Wikipedia has been Conditionally Approved, therefore Hiligaynon Wikipedia is only one step away from creation. However, before the wiki can be created, the main interface messages must first be translated into the Hiligaynon language.

Here are the steps to do so:

  • Step 1: Log-in to BetaWiki.
  • Step 2: Join the Translators group to enable you to translate the interface messages. (This could be achieved by requesting User:Nike or to grant you membership).
  • Step 3: Begin translating most of these messages into the Hiligaynon language (Apart from the following messages:
  • common* (2)
  • edittools
  • exif-* (273)
  • export* (7)
  • feed* (2)
  • import* (27)
  • lock* (8)
  • mainpagedocfooter
  • mainpagetext
  • metadata* (6)
  • monobook* (2)
  • pagetitle
  • unlock* (6))

Once the translation is completed, Hiligaynon Wikipedia will be created.

(Note: The default language on Betawiki is in Finnish, so after logging in, you should go to "My preferences" and customize your preferred language).

Replaceable fair use Image:Csab_google.JPG

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Csab_google.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 00:17, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Csab google.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Csab google.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 06:33, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Uploading images

Thank you for uploading images/media such as Image:Fighting spider.jpg to Wikipedia! There is however another Wikimedia foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading media there instead. That way, all the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!

I note you've uploaded quite a few - perhaps we could create a spider fighting category at Commons. Let me know if you need any help. Richard001 05:02, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer. I guess I should move those images to Commons... What do you suggest we do first? -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 09:21, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
The first thing to do is create an account if you haven't already (and you might find it handy to link to it on your user page here for quick navigation). I uploaded one or two before I created an account at Commons so it wasn't a big deal to move them. I see you've uploaded many though - if only you had got this message earlier! (See [1] for a list of all your image uploads - you can navigate there by going to your contributions and choosing image name space from the drop down box. I have to pay quite a bit for the bandwidth I use, so I can't really help in uploading there for you. I believe there are bots that can help with the process (see Wikipedia:Commons helper). I haven't used it that much but it should make any moving a lot easier.
I'm more interested in finding out how we can get people to upload at Commons from the beginning. We have a message that shows up when you upload any image - Please consider uploading your image to Wikimedia Commons. Commons is an archive of freely licensed (not fair use) images that are automatically available to all projects. Yet thousands of Commons compatible images still get uploaded here. I'm not sure if people don't see the message, don't want to bother or what. I had a template made so I can explain this to people without typing out the same message every time, and it seems to have some effect, though I'm sure we can still do more. Perhaps having a bot post it automatically for every upload that is obviously Commons compatible would help. Do you have any suggestions? What were your reasons for uploading to Wikipedia? Or were you just unaware of Commons? We need to understand this better so we can get more users uploading there from the beginning. You'll notice there are many thousands of images that could be moved there, but there is no automated process to do it, so most of them remain here.
Commons is extremely helpful - it allows sharing not just with other languages, but other projects in English like Wikibooks etc. It also provides a very good stand alone media repository, and I use it all the time to search for images for articles. Ideally users could just use their Wikipedia account for Commons as well, and I believe they've been working on that for a long time (see Bugzilla and m:Help:Unified login). The only other option is forcing people to upload at Commons, but since we still have non-free images here that would probably just encourage people to upload here under a non-free license. And having images here is a lot better than none at all. Richard001 03:04, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I was aware of Commons from the start, but opted to upload to Wikipedia since uploading to Commons entailed creating another account and logging in separately each session. Maybe it would be more user-friendly to redirect users to Commons every time they click the "my own work" link in the interface. I'm not sure if that will work or even if its possible; but it just might encourage users to upload to Commons instead of Wikipedia.
I'll move the free images I've uploaded here to Commons bit by bit; I've examined the tools and I think those work just fine for the job. I'll have no trouble locating all those images; I keep a gallery in my user page. Thanks for the reminders about Commons; I guess this method is the most effective way of getting people to upload free images there. =) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 03:38, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I don't know that the redirect idea would go down too well, but it's interesting. If I can't get any support for a bot mediated notification system I'll just have to try to get more people to help me spread the word. Richard001 05:32, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
More power to you mate. =) If there's anything I can do to help, hanggang sa kaya ko ("to the limit of my abilities"), I'm good to go. =) -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 12:47, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
