Move to Commons

Can you move these 2 wonderful and certainly legitimate images to WikiCommons: Image:Deir el-bahri temples.JPG and Image:MerenptahOfferingtoPtah.JPG Jeff? The uploader just placed them on Wikipedia. There is no 'move to commons' sticker on them so I don't know how to do it. I gather one is supposed to copy all the information including the license when they re-upload the image onto Commons. (it was easier when there was a move to Commons tag!) Leoboudv (talk) 06:40, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

There is a move to commons helper available: User:Krimpet/CommonsHelper Helper. You just need to install a script to enable a new tab to show up on your wikipedia window. Once you click on the "move to commons" window, you can use the tool to automatically make the move. It is a little fussy though, but it is a lot easier than doing it manually. Once you are in the upload window, you need to verify your commons account to the tool by creating a new password (just for the tool) and use that to log in inside the window. Then, on the upload form, click the box that says to use the commons upload bot to automatically upload the image. At first, it may seem tricky but once you get it figured out it's not too bad.   • Dear Jeff, Thank for sending the first image to Commons. When I click edit on the second image file, I can't find the link for 'Move to Commons' link. Do you know which button it is? BTW, I've contacted a flickr owner of and he has changed the license from 'copyright' to CC by sa 3.0. Pharaohinfo box

Dear Jeff, The article for king Neferhotep I has a pharaoh infobox whereas the articles for his brother Sobekhotep IV and the earlier 13th dynasty king Khendjer does not. This does not seem consistent. Most 13th dynasty kings don't justify a pharaohinfobox since we know almost nothing on them but these two are the exceptions, I think. Here is an image you could place in the infobox for Khendjer if you wish: Image:Khendjer-souterrains-herses.jpg I'm afraid I am not 100% familiar with the infobox system. Vithoba

Hi. Please would give your comments about the article on the article talk? Your input in the peer review of Matrikas had helped the article improve a lot. Like Matrikas, Vithoba is a Hindu deity and may have similar issues like jargon as you pointed out in Matrikas. I have tried to avoid such issues, but still some may be left out. Ancient Egyptians should not be colored any color

To avoid taking any side or POV, I think you should not color in your drawings because there is a lot of controversy over the race of ancient Egyptians. Currently you have them portrayed as black which is a radical POV. By that I mean I think you should draw them but not fill in the drawings with any colors.

  • I don't know what the problem is with your sketch of the pharaoh. Your drawing shows the pharaoh as BROWN, not black as the anon IP complained...which is historically accurate. Zahi Hawass, once noted that Tut was not black and your portrayal is historically accurate except for the Kushite era when they were assuredly black. I reverted it here and gave my reasons: [1]
  • By the way, could you please create a Pharaohinfobox for Sobekhotep IV? The geneaological and royal name data for his article is spread everywhere. Moreover, there is already a Pharaohinfobox for his brother Neferhotep I. He merits a Pharaohinfobox as one of the most powerful rulers of the 13th dynasty too. There's nothing wrong with the colors in the drawing, so, Anonymous IP, if you want it sans color you can feel free to download the drawing and remove the color yourself, and then upload it under a new filename, making sure to cite the source. Hieroglyph edit

Did you see this edit on Ramesses II: [2] I don't think he knows the hieroglyphs are in the infobox...perhaps because he is Bulgarian. Interestingly, he is listed as an 'inactive' member of the WikiProject Ancient Egypt site: [3] I guess he became 'active' again. Perhaps you may wish to revert the edit. Its your call. Editing Ancient Egypt articles

Hello, Jeff

I'm a new user, so I'm not sure to whom I should report within Wikipedia's hierarchy, but since I've seen you are also interested in Ancient Egypt I'm asking you, so if there is another person I should be consulting, I'd the grateful to know.

Well, you must know there are many problems concerning the First Intermediate Period of Egyptian's chronology, and in the article for the ninth and tenth dynasties, the name of the known kings seem to be wrong, at least according to my reference (Sir Alan Gardiner, Egypt of the Pharaohs, Oxford University Press 1961). So, as these articles don't have any reference at all, I'm editing accordingly to Sir Gardiner's book, since I believe it's better to have at least one reliable source of information.

I'd like to know if this is the better course of action concerning uncertain subjects.

Suggested Update for Tablet Press Animation

Your tablet press animation is great! One change I would suggest is showing the material entering the die as the lower punch is pulled down. The animation makes it appear that die fill is due to gravity alone, but the suction created by the lower punch pull-down is important. A nice article on the importance of suction is referenced below.

Ancient Egypt template

I now agree with you that the color for the Ancient Egypt topics template is too yellow, but I don't know the codes for the color I prefer. On File:Sand Palette.png, I was thinking of the color in the center, or the color to the left of it if that seems too dark. Could you tell me what codes they use? A. Tablet Press Animation

Hi Jeff,

I'm new in Wikipedia. In fact, I only joined so I can ask you this question.

How did you make the tablet press animation? Is there a software out there just for making these kinds of animations. You'll have to excuse me as I do not have a programming background. But if you just send me in the right direction, I might be able to figure it out myself.

I'm thinking of doing something like it for work except to be done for other types of equipment as a way to train colleagues.

Cristina, I put together the animation using photoshop's counterpart called Adobe ImageReady. The animation consists of something like 7 frames that repeat. The way you can do it is to prepare the start frame and end frames, and there's a command called Inbetweening or "tweens" that creates the intermediate frames between the start and finish position. See the article on Inbetweening for more on the basic principle. Tweening is the core technique of this kind of animation, and the key is to produce good start/end frames. For animations that need to change directions multiple times, set up additional key frames to tween between.
Since I wasn't that familiar with the program, to get the animation I wanted I had to do some rather elaborate object manipulation that probably could have been done easier a different way. Since my version of ImageReady is quite old, there is probably a newer product that would be easier. I haven't tried it yet, but Adobe's Flash Animation looks promising. The basic idea for animated .gif is to make a set of frames and combine them, so you could draw each frame individually in a vector editor like inkscape, my personal favorite, and then combine the individual .gif into an animated .gif. Inkscape also offers an interpolate command, similar to tween, that can also morph shapes to prepare individual frames, which is very powerful. After mentioning the Narmer Palette in the first section, I think the first thing I shall do is create a section on the legacy of Egyptian literature and its impact on other cultures (ancient and modern). Also, good point about linking things over and over, although Wikipedia:Linking#Repeated links says there are a few exceptions to the rule that one item should not be linked more than once.--Pericles of AthensTalk 19:18, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
I think there is a two-pronged compromise that can be made in regards to naming different scholars and their credentials throughout the article: (I) only mention a scholar's name when he is directly quoted; (II) I can create separate articles for these scholars, so that the information about their credentials (i.e. professor of such and such department from "X" or "Y" university) can be moved elsewhere and not distract or digress from the reading of the prose. Thanks very much. I had some additional ideas about legacy, especially how it impacted the classical writers like Herodotus, and Manetho, but I don't know any specifics offhand. It's also interesting that ancient Egyptian literature wasn't directly readable by modern scholars until the decipherment of hieroglyphs in the early 1800s. Digital Egypt for Universities (http://www.digitalegypt.ucl.ac.uk/) usually has a lot of references. I'll think about it some more and look through my offline research materials to see if I have anything more specific. I'll definitely put any updates or further thoughts on the article talk page.
