Moving pages

Hi! It looks like you're trying to move one or more pages. However, please stop doing that this way - the new name of the page might be good, but Wikipedia has another procedure for moving pages. Look at Help:Renaming (moving) a page: you need to use the move tab, and not cut and paste. Cut and paste moves don't take the edit history with them and thus violate the GDFL copyright terms. Also, in some cases, when the move might be controversial, you might first want to discuss the move on the article's talk page. WP:FU violation

You said: "The only edit I made to the Jennifer Morrison article was to link it to a picture of her as Dr. Allison Cameron, her character from House, with a short caption explaining as such. Could you please explain how this would have been interpreted as vandalism as well as provide a good reason why the picture should not be used? Thanks."

This violates WP:FU. We are only permitted to use freely-licensed, not promotional, images to depict living people. In your edit, you explicitly removed the warning not to do exactly what you did. Additionally, the image itself is missing the mandatory detailed fair-use rationale which you'd have had to add if Wikipedia allowed the use of this sort of image (which, of course, it does not). Given that you removed a warning telling you not to add a promotional image and then went ahead and added a promotional image, it seemed reasonable to leave you the warning. --Yamla 18:43, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Although I don't think I would call call the silhouette with "No free image" a very specific warning against using promotional images, I do apologize for not having read the Fair Use section of the image carefully enough. So that you are aware, the articles Omar Epps, Lisa Edelstein, and Jesse Spencer all use similarly copyrighted promotional photographs for House, originally released with and under the same license as the photo of Jennifer Morrison, which was not fair use. It seems that these photographs should be removed from their respective pages as well.

At this time, I would like to protest your decision to issue a very nonspecific warning which amounted to little more than a threat to ban my user account in response to my edit. People meaning well do occasionally make mistakes, you know, and it certainly doesn't help to encourage education or collaboration to respond so harshly. Perhaps this is asking too much, but I would have felt a lot less like I was being persecuted if you had included your explanation above with the original warning.

I'm not calling that the warning. The warning you removed is evident in this edit. "Only freely-licensed, not promotional, images may be used to depict living please. Ah, I see. I'll describe my thought process below, which may help you come up with a more effective warning. In this case, I wasn't able to combine 1. what I perceived to be precedent (i.e. the use of similar character images as I mentioned above, all fully documented in their Fair Use sections even though, as I know now, not complying with Fair Use), 2. WP:FU itself, 3. and the warning comment into a proper interpretation of policy. Particularly, I could not find anything as clear cut as "don't use character images" in either WP:FU or the warning comment, as it's disguised in jargon like "8. An image of a living person that merely shows what they look like." (taken from WP:FU under Counterexamples, which in hindsight I think may apply here). Given that nothing so explicit could be found, the vote in my head appeared to be 2 for (WP:FU and perceived precedent) and 1 against (warning comment) making the change.

How could this have been avoided?

In the warning comment, having stating "DON'T USE CHARACTER IMAGES" (or even more specifically referencing House) would have made me realize my err before committing it. Of course this wouldn't work for all living persons cases, as not everyone is an actor or actress. However, I surmise from the structure and placement of the warning, along with other comments I now see on your Talk page, that this is a singular (non-template) warning. It seems that if this is the case, then the addition or substitution of a less verbose (ans more to the point of the problem) warning would at least help to quell some future problems before they started. Additionally, perhaps this particular counterexample (using a promotional image of an actor or actress' character as their Infobox picture) to Fair Use could be added to that section in WP:FU, as it appears to have happened before.

Additionally, I find the Fair Use policy to be less than specific for the reason that actors and actresses are depicted in photographs or screenshots, as in Jesse Spencer's case, in character under their personal bio articles. Although I'm no lawyer, it seems to me that there is very little difference between this and referencing an actor or actress' major role in the main article and then depicting them as such with appropriate captioning in the Infobox. For this reason, the problem seems not to be using a promotional image, but rather the use of a promotional image in an Infobox (i.e. Infoboxes always describe the person, not their roles, no matter what disclaimer is added). This particular issue stems from the relative vagueness on this very specific subject in the WP:FU policy, rather than with the warnings. To rephrase, would it be any different if the offending picture in this case were in the same position with the same caption, but outside of the Infobox?

I'm eager to work with you at coming up with a good solution as ergonomics and specifically human-computer interaction have both been fascinations of mine for quite a while now. Hopefully my previous training in the two areas won't prove to be useless!

CSD

Hi,

While new content is wonderful in principle, certain types of content fall under WP's criteria for speedy deletion. In this case, ABAA's article offended CSDs A7 and G11. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a business directory, articles on organizations must assert encyclopedic notability -- failing to do so is speedy deletable (A7); articles must also not be written in manner that is strikingly promotional (G11). ABAA's article was deleted for both these reasons. New editors are not punished for the mistakes they make in their first drafts, but it is hoped that they will learn the guidelines through practice, and warnings as necessary. In this case, the author ABAA failed to "take the hint", and has seen his content speedy deleted four times now, after which point, protection against recreation is the norm. Friendly install

Hey there! I took your suggestion and installed the Friendly package to try out; a couple of quick thoughts on a fast test - the "welcomemenu" option was broken and left me with:

undefined

on the user's page. In fact, when I tried to do welcomemenu manually, it still wouldn't transclude anything - I suspect the template's broken or something. When I tried "welcomeg" on a different page, it did work, but left the word 'undefined' above the template again. I'll play with it more later, but those are some quick thoughts.

I have been doing research, but I still haven't been able to decide on whether Windows or Macs are the better computer. I have heard many positive things about Mac, like they can't get viruses, definetly a plus, but I have heard there is a lot more softwear for Windows. Can you shed any light on this topic?

Blocking threat

Dear Matt,

I'm new to Wikipedia, so you tell me whatthe proper procedure is. I removed claims from Van Sertima that were clearly erroneous from the entry, but I posted a fully documented (much more documented than any other claim in the entry) reason why Van Sertima's claim was not valid. How else is one to correct errors and dubious claims? Do I post my claims on the talk page and ask an editor to act and remove the erroneous claims? Why have an editing capability in Wikipedia if stuff cannot be removed when in error. I did not see in the FAQ on blocking that removing erroneous matter (particularly when fully documented) is a blocking offense.

Your friendly script is uncategorized

Hello, I just wanted to point out that your friendly.js page has been included in several cleanup categories. If you wouldn't mind, could you edit the page to include some nowiki tags like this:

help needed

I need a clarification on procedure. I have posted on the talk page on pre-columbian contacts fully footnoted and referenced evidence that Van Sertima attributed to Columbus a statement that he did not make by a documented and verifiable accurate quotation. I have further with full footnoting shown that claims that guanin proves African contact are not supportable. I tried deleting van Sertima's claim but it was restored. I then tried inserting footnoted contrary evidence and it was deleted. My question is, if wikipedia is to remain credible there must be a mechanism to determine when conflicting claims occur which one is more credible and supported by evidence and literature citations and then protect the more credible one from repeated deletions.

I have many potential contributions to entriesin Mesoamerica having taught the subjectf or years but I am not willing to spend my time restoring material which has been deleted time and time again. I always footnote my material, which doesnot alwayshappen in wikipedia.

Noms for deletion

I appreciate you zeal to remove spam from the encyclopedia, but you might want to rethink your approach. You've nominated one article and 2 images, Image:FUJI - liberty 1.jpg and Image:Big-Ben & Palm2.jpg without giving any valid reason for deletion. Further, your nominations don't make any sense. In Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Airship Management Services, Inc., you don't give any valid reason for deletion, and COI isn't valid. All that is is a reason to tag the article for cleanup. Did you happen to notice that the article is actually sourced with independent references, which is a good thing? For the images, all you say is that the company which owns the rights uploaded the image. So? Didn't you notice that they also used a valid license release the images for us to use? They are doing it right. This is how we want companies to release such images for us to use. I and others have been trying a long time - with little success - to get the likes of Boeing and Northrop Grumman to release images for us to use. So now we have an aircraft manufacturer who is releasing useable images, and releasing them with proper licenses, and all you do is seek to delete them? You punish them for doing it right? Your actions make no sense, and certainly are not helpful to encyclopedia building. You should, instead, have written them a thank you note! I'm going to assume good faith and go with the thought that you were just trying to keep spam from infiltrating, but you might want to go back and withdraw those nominations, otherwise they might be seen as bad-faith noms. I was not try to add any info to advertise BioMAJ. Those are just the information all the researchers in France need together with the functionality chart of BioMAJ.

This is an open-source software which is used in BioInformatics in Europe. It is not a commercial software, anyway.

I appreciate you're trying to help, but of the last six inappropriate CSD nominations I've declined and de-tagged, five were added by yourself. Removing inappropriate {{db}} tags creates unnecessary sysop work and inflates the already bloated Category:Candidates for speedy deletion still further - this is not meant to be rude at all, but could I ask you to refamiliarise yourself with the criteria for speedy deletion, which are only applicable in a few specific cases and not a a more general "I don't think this looks notable" issues. — iridescent 21:01, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

No offense taken, of course. I do see why Barbara Stern Burstin should not have been tagged; my mistake on this one. Urban Land at the time I tagged it, looked like it was created by a user who was on a mission to plaster links to the article everywhere he could; I should have kept an eye on it after I tagged it. As for the Victor Hassine article, I truly believe it does not assert notability according to WP:N. To establish personal notability, independent sources are needed, with the exception of persons with a demonstrable wide name recognition, correct? Simply stating that someone has authored a book does not meet the criteria for inclusion, or am I mistaken? Having notability and asserting it are two different things, and I contended the article did not assert it; can you clarify why this was wrong? As for the other 2 CSD nominations of mine that you declined, I think they were deleted in between the postings of your message and mine. I'm sure Victor hassine's headed for deletion one way or another unless expanded since you're absolutely correct in saying writing a book doesn't automatically warrant inclusion; however, IMO being a published author of what appears to be, although the article doesn't make it clear, a reasonably successful book (on its third edition, published by the legitimate Roxbury Publishing & not a self-published work), is at the very least enough of an assertion of notability to warrant a debate. (There do seem to be some reliable sources for him, too; see [1] for example.)
Incidentally, my comments at WP:FRIENDLY weren't aimed at you in particular - I'd completely forgotten you were responsible for it. I do think there's an issue with the work generated by automated stub-tagging which will only get worse if Friendly takes off and the {{stub}} tag is included as a general feature. — iridescent 21:31, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
I think I see what you're saying about the Victor Hassine article now. I'll take a bit more time to do some investigating before CSD tagging something like that in the future. As far as WP:Friendly goes, that was a great idea...I hadn't even thought of what having the stub tag in there would do. My plan is still to eventually have the major (or possibly all) stub types in the tool, so I put the generic one in as kind of a placeholder in the meantime. It's gone now, though! Re Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Business Publication. As far as I know editing signed in and also anonymously does not count as sockpuppetry. It is something we have all done! Here is my sock! Business Publication is a pain in the arse of course and needs to be put down but all that was needed was a note on their talk page to alert other quality-controllers: "I assume that these edits are yours". Anytime! Just so you know, you are allowed to remove templates from a page when the template no longer fits. For instance, when you categories, it's acceptable to remove the {{uncategorized}} template. Also, anyone can object to a PROD by simply removing the PROD from the top of the article, just like removing a template. Thanks for saying so! The thought has crossed my mind, but judging from many of the comments that I've seen on RFA's, I wouldn't think I would have a very good shot. For instance, a huge percentage of my contributions are marked as minor, since I mostly patrol recent changes and new pages for vandalism. I've seen many reviewers be highly critical of RFA's who's major contribution is of that sort (although I fail to understand why). I've also never made any substantial content contributions, which reviewers seem to also be looking for. Do you think I'd have a chance at passing RFA? Well, I passed.  ;) RFA is a nasty, broken system and I think it's fair to assume that you're going to get anywhere from 2 to 20 oppose votes based on those concerns. I happen to vehemently disagree with those editors -- being a good article writer is not necessary to being a good admin -- but, unfortunately, I'm not the supreme dictator of Wikipedia. In addition to being broken, RFA is also an incredibly stressful environment, where every single mistake is scrutinized. I know that your lack of content contributions is going to have a negative effect, as well as your recent overzealousness on New Page Patrol. However, I see a dedicated editor who is conscientious and civil, and who would not abuse the tools. The fact that you started early reverting vandalism and haven't burned out yet is a really good sign, too. I'd be happy to nominate you, should you feel up to withstanding the slings and arrows of outraged editors.  :) -- Merope 16:43, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Frankly, adding this information with an edit summary of "minor punctuation alterations" is grounds for reverting the article and issuing you a warning. If you want to add information like that to an article, you have to cite multiple reliable independent sources for verifiability and use an appropriate edit summary. I'm glad you like it! If you have a template(s) that you have in mind, you can suggest them on the Friendly project talk page. The project is very young, so suggestions for additional templates or features are greatly encouraged. I do have in mind a customization for the tagging feature that would let users specify their own tags, but I haven't gotten a chance to implement it yet. Thanks for the positive feedback. Speedy Deletion of Sik

When you placed a speedy deletion tag on Sik, you tagged it as a Biography, when it was clearly not a biography, solely nonsense. In the future, read the whole content of the article before tagging it.

In the context of the article (below):
sik is a word for nang and nang is a word for reece which literaly means your the best at everything.

The article, if I read it correctly, is about a person named "Reece," pretending to be about a word. Well, my personal opinion is that since this account was registered in June, never edited and only woke up to do a vandal move, its purpose was only do be able to perform autoconfirmed actions. That's why I would have indef blocked. I might be wrong though (but arguably, I'm not the nicest admin when it comes to blocks, I usually do 31 hours (which is 1 whole day + some time to make sure that the kid will no longer be in the school library when it expires) for a first offense, but I indef if the vandalism is something that was thought beforehand (ie vandalizing userpages, moving pages around, ...). It's not me officer! It's User:Redmarkviolinist's sig! He opens a <sup> but does not close it. You don't see it because he uses also a <big> he doesn't close. On most browsers, you end up with the regular font, but since I'm opening a <sup> and closing it, you end up with only <big> opened on the page. Care to drop him a note (I'm leaving work soon)?
