I'm interested in biographies of foreigners who lived in Ireland. I read somewhere that she had lived here, and I wanted to find out more about her and where she had lived, so I looked her up on Wikipedia but there was no article on her, only on her ex-husband. Hi, many thanks! I saw your name too, and I'd first like to ask you where you get the co-ordinates from. I use Earthtools.org, but it seems to provide only the decimal format, not the minutes and seconds of an arc that I'd prefer. At the moment I'm creating articles for the following:
  • Each of the Dublin city civil parishes (about 13 out of 19 or so done so far - each article to contain sections on the church, cemetery, parish and notable parishioners)
  • Each of the Dublin Liberties (5 done, the others are of minor importance). Also need to create a category for the Dublin Liberties.
  • Each of the Dublin hospitals of the 19th century (about 6 left to do) and the prominent doctors and surgeons in these
  • Re-writing The Liberties article, which was in a really bad state, but I wanted to complete the individual Liberties articles first to ensure I had references, background material, etc.

I get the coords using Google Maps by right clicking on where you want for coords for and then select What's here?. I then check them with the other map providers before I commit, i.e. bing and yahoo. Earthtools.org is using google maps, but it is rounding to 4 decimal places, which I have seen as being what should be put on the article as excessive decimal places, etc. Google gives you 6 decimals, for example The Spire in Dublin's city centre is 53.349802,-6.26026 using What's here. You may know that you need to take the absolute values of the coords, so -6.26026 is 6.26026 and put that in for the coords in the article. If you want minutes and seconds, you can convert in Excel with a few simple steps. So using 6.26026, you have 6 as the degrees, then .26026 * 60 = 15.6156 or 15 minutes, then .6156 * 60 = 36.936 or 36 seconds. This makes 6.26026 equal to 6°15′36″. There is some precision lost on the locating this point back to the map where the Spire is a good example of this. So you could say 36.9 seconds and that will look good. I hope that is helpful.

Perhaps you could list your articles that you are intersted in on your user page, along with those that you have created. I have seen people do that and it can be interesting. I think I will do that myself.
As regards churches and hospitals, I am interested in those too, but it is lower on my list at the moment. I am interested in things local to me along the South East of Dublin. I have been out taking pictures and will be hitting the city centre shortly.
If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know and if you are stuck for a photo for your articles, I can try too.

A quick question for either or both of you. Is there any tutorial that would cover the info above re using co-ordinates? There are many occasions when I would have liked to apply them to various articles, but seem to get tied up in knots. Or is it just something that geotaggers and other regular users of GPS info. have from outside Wikipedia? I found this tutorial useful WikiProject Geographical coordinates. I should say that I found Bing Bird's Eye view a good check, but their Bird's Eye pictures mapped to coord is off in quite a few places, but it is good for reference points to be sure you have dropped the point right. I just put the coords at the end of the article or in the infobox if it is there. I use this at the end of the article coord|53.349802|N|6.26026|W|type:landmark_region:IE|display=title enclosed in double curly brackets {} . You can change display=title to display=inline if you want to show other points in the article, i.e. other buildings in a large complex or battle sites or something like that.
Then go to this list for articles that need tagging Ireland articles missing geocoordinate data
I'm sure in due time an agreed format will be made and a bot will come along a format the coords in decimals or degrees, mins, secs.
Also, there is a discussion to be had about coords for articles where the actual building doesn't exist anymore and something else is there. These coords make the articles appear in the Google Maps Wikipedia layer and also in some iPhone applications. The time lag to appear in those external databases appears to be in months, rather than overnight or weekly.

Thanks, very interesting, and as Rashers says lots to absorb. I've a few photos to put up of buildings, including churches, in the Liberties. Would like a photo of what's left of Church of St. Nicholas Within and St. Luke's Church, Dublin on the Coombe, also the Widow's House there and the portico of Coombe Hospital. I'll arrange a list of articles I'm working on on my user page, divided into geographic area and subject if possible, 'cos I do a lot of German and Italian stuff as well. St Audoen's

I put a link to St Audoen's Catholic Church, Dublin in the lead of St. Audoen's Church. Please feel free to move it if you see fit. Also someone requested that there should be a disambiguation page. Do you think that is required? I think we should look at naming all churches (at least Dublin) with a standard naming convention. There are a few subtle differences like St or St. or Saint for a start. DubhEire (talk) 14:43, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

I think I'd edit the intro - the juxteposition of two similarly-named churches might prove confusing for the general reader, and there is no indication there that St. Audoen's is Church of Ireland. I think a DAB page would be no harm - just a matter of what to call it. I'd welcome a naming convention, and would suggest some common information in the church articles, ie, which sections should be included. I've been concentrating on old churches, so historical information preponderates, perhaps to the detriment of other information. That's a good list. I agree with your naming convention. I have come across a few Saint blah. I would prefer it to be "St." and you have named all of yours that way. I think the name of the church followed by where it is to be good, where being street or city is fine. I should rename any Saint something to "St." that I have been looking at. I see that it was built just after WWI in the grounds of the old Dominican Sisters and all the detail was pretty much done between 1920 and 1936 by Sister Mary Concepta Lynch who was a trained Celtic artist. An other Question about correct wording

I've an other question to a native speaker...

In the article Düsseldorfer Automobil- und Motorsport-Club 05 is the sentence:

The Düsseldorfer Automobil- und Motorsport-Club 05 e. V. (im ADAC) is the local club of the ADAC (German automobile club).

My Question:

This motor sport club is a small part of the big ADAC. Is the wording "...is THE local club..." correct, or is the wording "...is A local club..." better???? --Pitlane02 (talk) 18:26, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
In my opinion, if there is only one local club in the area referred to, then THE is correct. If there is more than one club in the area referred to, then A is correct (or also, if you do not wish to refer to a specific area). Here we are dealing specifically with one club, and referencing the area of Düsseldorf, so I'd say THE. Hohenloh + 18:40, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

My apologies

OK, so that was a poor statement on my part, and truthfully, its not that big a deal even if you were associated with the tour, as long as your edits are npov and sourced. COI is a guideline, not a law. sorry for the insinuation, though, as it was founded on speculation. however, i cant remove it from the subject of the edit. i will put a small note on the talk page of the article. and i still have to ask why we have such detail in this article. are there reliable sources that show this tour is notable?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:25, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

No probs, and thanks for the reply. I don't know of any ghost bus tours in any city in Europe besides Dublin (but I'm willing to be corrected on this), which alone would make this tour unique, if not notable. But this tour is unique in that it visits and describes parts of Dublin that no other tour does, and all of these locations, as far as I know (and I am a historian and tour guide), can be verified in books, newspaper articles, etc. It is valuable in keeping local history alive, and is as notable as anything else in Dublin that tries to do the same thing. I'll try to get around to providing sources as time permits, but if you would like further info please don't hesitate to get in touch. 02:29, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

A great-grandmother was von Hohenlohe, but lived in the north of Germany (Schleswig-Holstein). Civil parishes

It is hardly a controversial deletion of the category so its not required to bring it to discussion. Churchs don't belong to a civil parish, they belong to ecclesiastical parishes. Civil parishes were sub-divisions of a barony and the only religious link they have to an ecclesiastical parish is that many share the same boundaries as Church of Ireland parishes - but that is all.

Also a church can hardly be a parish in itself never mind a civil parish. That is why it is called a civil parish after all - its not religious.

If you want to enforce mistruth then take it to the Wikiproject Ireland talk page and see what everyone else thinks - either that or you remove the mistruth yourself. Mabuska (talk) 10:41, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I think you have done a good job in creating the article but it does need a copy-edit for layout and a few other things, also the number of references is IMHO over-kill. I'm a bit stuck for time right now with other projects but in the meantime take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (titles) for correct use of punctuation in titles (which is something I need to correct in a number of articles). Irish Guards/History of the IG

The Scots Guards have four chronological "History of the Scots Guards" articles, but the other Guards regiments don't have any. When I moved the section about the founding of the regiment to History of the Irish Guards, I merged it retaining the references. There is no need to have the section in Irish Guards as well surely. It seems needless duplication. It also allows MFIreland a further forum to push his POV that Earl Roberts of Kandahar, Pretoria and Waterford is not Irish but Indian, merely because he was born there while his Irish father was serving the Empire. I have not removed it yet from Irish Guards until I see your further response.Dabbler (talk) 18:34, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I think that the sources referenced in the section under discussion (was "History", now "Creation") should also appear in this article (Irish Guards) - you will have noticed that the other editor slapped a refimprove tag on the article yesterday (unjustified, IMHO, as there are good references provided).
As far as I know it's usual in Wikipedea that sections tagged with "Main article" also contain a summary. I feel that there should be some historical information in this article, notwithstanding that the main historical info also appears in History of the Irish Guards. I changed the section heading containing this info from "History" to "Creation", as the removed/replaced text mentioned only the setting up of the regiment.

That's grand. I have not made any intervention for several days except just now, which was only to clean up the references. There is a history of disruptive edits by this editor on a number of articles dealing with Irish history over the past few few months, several of which were brought to the attention of ANI. It was characteristic that despite many requests by other editors, no attempt was made by this editor to explain things on the talk pages. The editor was blocked for sock-puppetry and the articles eventually tidied up by members of the Military History project. Hohenloh + 00:28, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Hohenloh, before granting you a filemover permission, I would like to see you using commons effectively. Many of your files uploaded could have gone to commons. One of the issues a filemover has to consider is the name clash between commons and Wikipedia, so it would be good if you can show awareness of how commons works. For non free files you have to take extra care if you move them, so it is good if you have done something with them. However at least you know how to use upload and move! Nearly a year ago, you and I got into a little squabble and in the interests of allowing the encyclopedia to develop free of distractions such as these I decided to retire from this site, and in the future appeal to your better nature in order to effect reconciliation. Actually both File:Isaac Cohen.JPG and File:Immanuel Jakobovits.jpg as non-free images may only be used is an appropriate fair-use rationale is completed for each and every use but it must comply with all 10 non-free content policy requirements. Because there is no critical commentary about the images there is no contextual significance, so there is no justification in being used in History of the Jews in Ireland. Jakobovitz has a one line mention while Cohen is not even mentioned; fails WP:NFCC#8. Sorry but fair-use is rather strict. The use in their own biographies is acceptable under fair-use but neither has a proper fair-use rationale which I will try to add. Hi, to answer your first question, each of those articles on hospitals contains the names and sometimes details of doctors and/or surgeons, not all of whom have pages of their own, so for that reason I feel the category is suitable. On your second point, I believe I have made only one deletion, a sentence or two, relating to James Little, which I think you'll agree has no relevance to the article - Wikipedia recommends deletion, see wp:topic. As I mentioned already I think it's a good idea to have an article devoted to Little, however, Wikipedia articles are not the place for test edits or storing information - that's what the sandbox is for. The new category Category:Cemeteries in County Dublin follows Category:Buildings and structures in County Dublin and other subcategories of Category:County Dublin which is shown as one of 26 counties of the Republic. If the top subcategory should now be 8 regions including the Dublin Region, then a major reorganisation (by Project Ireland?) is needed. There has been much debate in and outside of Project Ireland on this topic (the break-up of the traditional counties since 1994) over the past couple of years, on content, lead, categories, etc. I haven't had time to keep up with the many discussions, and anyway some of them degenerated into edit warring. However, I've tried to keep articles that I have created, and related articles, updated. In this case, IMO, there should be a category Cemeteries in Dublin City for those inside the city boundaries. Of course some cemeteries formerly outside the city boundaries are now inside - I'd say Donnybrook is borderline. Hohenloh + 15:00, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Protestant Irish nationalists

The section i removed is highly suspect. Obviously its unsourced and the article has been tagged since March 2011, meaning unsourced information can be removed. In this case i also think it's very subjective wording. How does any of the people or examples of Protestant unionists accepting positions etc. in the Irish Free State equate to being abandoning their unionism and becoming "former unionists"? How does that even make them nationalists? Good explicit sources would be needed otherwise is it even relevant to the article? Mabuska (talk) 18:55, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

No problems, however if nothing is done to fix the sections problems then due to the above problems i will remove it again as it is unsourced and subjective making statements that do not neccessarily mean that they are "former unionists". Mabuska (talk) 19:26, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
I have come to the conclusion that this article is "all over the place" (as we say). The lede does not fit the title and all sorts of information seem to have been added to it willy-nilly since it was first created, disregarding WP:TOPIC. It could be split into several articles, or renamed, the lede re-written and non-topic information removed. I think the information contained in the short paragraph under discussion is OK, and can provide more information and references if needed, but I'm wondering whether, under the circumstances, it is worth it? If you do remove it, you could probably remove half the article at the same time. Hohenloh + 17:28, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Overtagging

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes it's like being in a very dark room with eyes closed and hands tied behind the back. I'll have a look at the changes you've made and follow the example from here-on in. I've found it a difficult area, and didn't feel comfortable with the number I was putting in (as you say, it disrupts the flow). But then it's hard to balance whether to only tag a few things that need citations or tag the lot. I'll go minimalist, wouldn't want to be accused of vandalism! Thanks. Mike d'Abo

Sorry, if I'd read on I could have done two answers in one. Normally on a big rewrite I'd give plrenty of time for comment first (you might want to check Talk:Johnny Cymbal for an example, and feedback on that one would be much appreciated). The d'Abo kinda ran away from me, and I lost the bigger picture, (though I don't think it was a bad job really). I'm just astounded how many articles I come across have been left to wither away incomplete or have been added to and added to and now resemble soup; or have critical info missing while deep in trivia, or quite simply don't have any chronology to them, or (I'll shut up now) ...

However, I'm now not clear whether the problem is the just citations or the re-write. As the change in info was

  • a remove of trivia
  • removal of an over-emphasis (and almost an advert) for radio programmes, which is not really his notability
  • removal of a bad repetition that should have been edited out before
  • putting things in a chronological order instead of a higgeldy-piggeldy history

would it not have been better to remove the over-cite problem and leave the text? Or is the text also contentious? I could happily explain why all the changes were made on the talk page, but I would have thought most of them were self-explanatory, and correct. If I've got it wrong, and you have the time, I'd appreciate the reasoning, so I can avoid doing it again. Especially useful as it's early days.

The main thing that struck me was the tagging, which as I said I thought was excessive, but there seemed to be a disjointedness about the article, which made me investigate it and then I found it was a re-write (and coincidentally, had just been done!). I read the previous version and found it easier to handle. I'm a bit busy at the moment - if you could give me a day or two I'll get back in further detail. Knowing how busy things can get, I'll hang fire on the d'Abo until you can get back. Appreciated. I'm sure I can make a better stab at it, but as I said, there's a fair bit in there that doesn't look as though it belongs, and some which clearly isn't important enough comapred to what was missing.
- Just for info, (as per the gibber on my page), my intention is generally to tackle entries on a book by book basis from my collection (often simply making small changes or just a ref addition) rather than going full on on each article to add multiple references. I realise that means revisiting entries as I work through, but the alternative would mean spending ages on any single entry rather than being able to add to a larger number. Currently working through the Larkin encyclopedias does mean I'll get sidetracked sometimes where an entry is confused, wrong or missing clearly important info (or at least more important than what's there) and a re-write looks a better solution. But when I started, with Lillian Roxon's book, I ended up with doing very little other than refs (sometimes the only ones an article had). Feel free to shadow and revert or change whenever you like, of course - I don't take it personally, and it wouldn't be the first time it's happened :-)). However, can I just point out that a full revert can also remove 'good stuff' - like correcting Vicki Brown's date of death (I'll sort it later). I'll keep the tagging finger under control, promise! Volunteer (Irish republican)

Hi Hohenloh. I appreciate that the section about loyalism probably now isn't relevant as there's a whole article about it, but don't you think the "see also" is appropriate? There should be a way for readers to find out about both terms from both articles as they are relevant to each other and both stem from the same source. For example, on the Volunteer (Ulster loyalist) article, there's a sentence stating "Irish nationalist and republican use of the term originates with a second Irish Volunteers formed in 1913 in response to Carson and Craig's UVF" and a "see also" link to the republican article. Sorry, but I'm only going by what is described under Tag bomb - there is already a tag noting the need for references; this should be sufficient. We assume good faith, there are already several references cited in the article (ok, more footnotes would be better, but there are probably a few hundred thousand articles that are in the same boat), there is no obvious POV problem, there is no obvious political bias, so where is the need to go around adding further tags willy-nilly that do nothing but harm the readability of the article? If you have concerns with the article, it is recommended by Wikipedia to first air them on the article's Talk page. Hohenloh + 20:38, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
