Northwest Kansas Technical College[edit]

I see that you have recreated the article on Northwest Kansas Technical College, a page that was originally created by Business.nwktc (talk · contribs) (which user has been subsequently blocked for having been a group account). Your own username indicates that there is still a conflict of interest, so you should consider that when editing the page. I have reverted your addition of the schools mission and vision statements, based on the policy outlined at WP:MISSION. Please read it before restoring these statements, which tend to be empty and promotional, rather than meaningful and neutral. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:39, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear WikiDan61, Thank you for your feedback on our Wiki page. I am new at this and I am trying to create a Wiki page for my school as a class project. I am trying to provide more information on the school for kids that are interested. I have tried numerous approaches to writing this page but it has been deleted. I realize that I may be going about this the wrong way and I hope you can provide me with some guidance. I would be greatly appreciate any advice you would be able to provide or direct me to. The main problem is that I have been writing the page and editing at the same time. I am unsure how to upload the whole article because I have not found a place to upload it from Word. I am also having trouble finding a place on Wiki to edit and later upload. What would be the best way to enter the content onto the Wiki page? Thank you very much for your assistance and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

DLC, you would do well to look at articles about similar colleges. In my own neck of the woods (I live on Long Island in New York), there is a local community college by the name of Suffolk County Community College, whose Wikipedia article would serve as a good model for your own. The article should follow the standard Wikipedia guidelines:
  1. Verifiable: The facts in the article must be cited, using reliable sources. Publications associated with the school itself should be avoided, as these tend to be more promotional than neutral.
  2. Neutral: The article should be fair and balanced, neither overly promotional nor overly critical.
  3. Readable: The article should follow Wikipedia's Manual of Style to assure that the article is readable and fits within the overall style and tone of Wikipedia.
As a general outline, the article should cover:
  • A lead that gives a one or two sentence introduction to the school. (This already exists; fleshing out the article is the rest of the job.)
  • A background or history section that explains how, when, and by whom the school was founded, and how it came to its present form.
  • A brief description of the programs available at the school:
    • Academic
    • Athletic
    • Extra-curricular
  • A section of notable faculty and alumni. In this section, limit yourself to people who already have Wikipedia articles.
Good luck!

WikiDan61, Thank you very much for your prompt response and helpful input. I shall use Suffolk as my guide. I am still a little confused on the subject on uploading and editing a page. Can I continue editing on the page that I am currently using, or can I use Word? My question is do I need to write it all at one time or can I continue to edit the page as I progress? Again, thank you very much for your assistance.

You can edit the page in place. However, if you are unsure of Wikipedia's syntax, it might be best to make your own user space copy of the page and edit it there. Articles with lots of little edits become somewhat unwieldy to other editors, and you break things, others who are watching the page might jump in to help before you can fix things, which just causes edit conflicts. If you'd like, you can create an article at User:Dlc.nwktc/Northwest Kansas Technical College, copy the contents of the present article to that new page, and edit it there to you heart's content until it's ready to copy back to the main space. Thank you again! I'm looking forward to completing this project.

  • I'm sorry, but I am going to have to block this account because of the user name. In the template I'll put up here in a sec, follow the link to create a new user name. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 19:31, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Drmies,
I understand why the username would come across as a group account. However, I have tried very hard to make sure the content of ==Northwest Kansas Technical College== was not promotional as this was not my intention. Could you perhaps let me know what you found promotional in the sections you have deleted? And how I can correct it to be simply informational? Thank you, I look forward to hearing your input. April 2012[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual. You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. If your username doesn't represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. Thank you.
