Welcome![edit]

Hi, Cantthinkofagoodname/archive1, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the five pillars of Wikipedia. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page.

Additional tips[edit]

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Happy Wiki-ing.[edit]

Joinee[edit]

Are you a Joinee?

  • No, but it looks interesting. Might send a photo and see what happens. Cantthinkofagoodname 10:57, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Hey, you wanted some coments. It looks good, but there's a lot of info on the History of Manchester United page that isn't on the new page ... I'd suggest taking everything you can, then chopping the pre-1945 history bit from the main Man Utd page and linking. Proto 08:58, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Editing free use covers, etc[edit]

Never did get a definitive answer, just a "go ahead" from one of the crew who tidy up messes related to such issues; nevertheless, it doesn't seem right to me to extract some minor portion of some magazine cover for something totally unrelated (i.e. "picture of eyeball, from portrait of George Bush on cover of Time magazine") so I mostly just reproduce the whole cover or most of it with the dominant image. But I guess that means you can go ahead and use your own judgement. Gzuckier 15:33, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Your work on the Manchester United pages[edit]

Yo! While I'm sure it'll never actually be finished (is anything here?), just wanted to say well done on everything you've done on cleaning up the page, especially the history section, because I know that was a hellishly big piece of work. It is definitely appreciated, good job. Proto 10:09, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Featured Articles[edit]

Hello. You wrote that your fairly new and that you had no idea on what makes an article Featured on Wikipedia. You can see Wikipedia:What_is_a_featured_article for the formal requirements and see WP:FA to see which articles are deemed featured status. I hope your enjoying Wikipedia. Peer review[edit]

Thanks for the tips on the FC Zwolle article :-) I've added some statistics, I've sectioned and expanded the club history (although it still needs improvement and expansion) and I've changed the use of Eredivisie and "the highest level of Dutch football". I will add a section about the rivalry with Go Ahead Eagles somewhere soon. Any other tips? Aecis 29 June 2005 09:12 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the response. I haven't had tv and internet for about a week, so I haven't been able to do much in editing. I've discovered some new sources in the meantime, which I will process as soon as possible. I've read your (very comprehensive) article about Denis Law, and I've got two tips:
  • At this point, there are no tables in your article. You have mentioned every club Law has played for, and you have mentioned every step in his career, but what could clarify that is a small table of per season statistics (season - club - matches played - goals scored).
  • What you could also add, is some information about the records Law has held. If I'm not mistaking, Law was ManU's all time top scorer in Europe until Ruud van Nistelrooy overtook him. You might even add a section about Law in European Cup competitions. (European Cup, Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup).
Other than that, this is the best football biography I've seen on Wikipedia. Aecis 8 July 2005 20:11 (UTC)
PS. I'm not really interested in nominating this article for FA. I simply want to expand and improve it, out of love for the sport and the club (I hope that that won't interfere with NPOV).
    • I've just seen your edits to FC Zwolle, and I have no problem with them. There is one thing though. In the PEC section, I had written: "PEC was one of Zwolle's three top football clubs, ..." You changed this to "PEC was one of Zwolle's top three football clubs, ..." There is a considerable difference in meaning between the two sentences. What I was referring to with this sentence, is the role of the city of Zwolle in Dutch football, not the position of these clubs in the local football scene. Zwolle has had three top football clubs (although calling them "top clubs" may be stretching it a bit). ZAC was big in the Interbellum, regularly fighting for the Dutch national title with Ajax and Feyenoord, but never winning it. ZAC was the club of Beb Bakhuys (one of the best football players this country has ever seen; he scored 28 goals in 23 matches for the Dutch national team, which places him above Marco van Basten and Ruud van Nistelrooij, and just below Johan Cruijff) and former UEFA president Jo van Marle. Zwolsche Boys was a top amateur club from about 1945 to the introduction of professional football in 1954. The club was professional from 1954 to 1969, when the club returned to the amateur ranks. There, the club won the league title in 1984. Perhaps the sentence is best served with rephrasing, but I don't know exactly how it should be reworded. Perhaps something to the extent of "The city of Zwolle has had three clubs who have played in the highest ranks of national football, of which PEC was one." Aecis 16:24, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'll see what I can do in the WikiProjects you just mentioned. I haven't yet fully gone into it, but I'm sure I can be of assistance. There are a few article ideas that have just sprung to mind, but they've still got to come to fruition. My main focus at this point is Dutch football clubs. At this point, every professional football club in the Netherlands has an article, just like the main amateur league. Now, I'm shifting my attention to former professional clubs (first in the queue is FC Amsterdam, which existed from 1972 to 1982, reaching the UEFA Cup quarterfinal in the 1974/75 season) and notable amateur (well, basically semi-professional) clubs. First in line there is IJsselmeervogels. Aecis 08:01, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AFC Wimbledon[edit]

Actually, I didn't introduce AFC Wimbledon into the article; I only added some elaboration to edits others had made. That having been said, I have no objection to your cutting it out, since your argument does make sense. Dale Arnett 8 July 2005 15:55 (UTC)

G'day CTOAGN, I noticed you've still got Nigel Martyn listed on your userpage as "possible copyvio". Thought you'd like to know that Bad Wolf and I have changed the article significantly, so that there's nary a shred of the original copyvio article remaining. So Martyn's no longer a copyright issue (unless you count the image; does that count as fair use or not, d'yer know?). Trivia question[edit]

Hi CTAOGN, thanks for looking after Robin van Persie (I was just on a weekend break but I didn't want vandals to go unnoticed). Anyway, while on my weekend away I had a minor pub argument with a friend and I was wondering if you could settle it.

Basically, we were discussing the "three foreigner" rule that UEFA used to impose on clubs playing in European competition in the early 90s, and how it meant Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish players were counted as foreigners. However, I remembered, vaguely, that thanks to British nationality laws, players from the Republic of Ireland were not considered "foreign" and so were (paradoxically) not included under the rule. My friend disagreed and said Irish players were included as foreigners.

I struggled to think of an example where this affected Arsenal (at that time, most of Arsenal's players were English, hard as it is to believe nowadays :-)). But I do remember United being afflicted quite particularly by this rule with their non-English players, but not Irish players like Irwin and Keane. In particular, I remember United's thrashing by Barcelona, where Schmeichel was dropped to accomodate Giggs, but Irwin and Keane still started. The Bosman ruling page doesn't clarify the point, and I've tried finding early Champions League teamsheets from the early 90s to prove my point, but without much success, so I was wondering whether you (a) knew what the rule was for certain, and/or (b) knew where I could find some early 90s Champions League lineups that would settle the argument.

Cheers, Qwghlm 09:31, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My revert[edit]

That IP had had a recent history of vandalism, and considering that, and the unsourced and highly specific nature of his edit, I felt the burden of proof was on it, and that burden was not met. If you want to readd it, please do, you aren't an anonymous vandal. :) It had nothing to do with the content and everything to do with the fact that it was an unsourced addition from a vandal IP. --Golbez 19:14, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arsenal[edit]

No, I'm objecting to the fact that the paragraph on Arsenal women is too short. A solitary paragraph does not make a section. There's no harm in duplicating content. The main womens' page is meant to be expanded. This means that while the contents of both pages will remain the same for the moment, after sometime that page will get a character of its own as it gets expanded by the normal wikiprocess. To clarify things further, only the article nominated is allowed to be objected upon. =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:52, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And no, I don't have problems with such posts on my talk page. =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:53, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

FAC: Arsenal[edit]

Thanks for the offer of help, I think it's going OK though. You could help by giving the new Supporters section a going-over for copyedits, and perhaps help with the very last sentence on the recent Arsenal-United rivalry (I haven't quite conveyed the right meaning atm, but I don't want it to become overladen with a blow-by-blow account of the Keown/van Nistelrooy or soup-throwing incidents either... Qwghlm 14:30, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I know about about the brawls in the late 80s/early 90s but in my mind there isn't a strong continuation between that and the late 90s/2000s rivalry, which is probably in part due to the ongoing personal rivalry between Ferguson and Wenger. It certainly is a lot stronger now - the other week Phil Neville was booed when Everton visited Highbury, just for being an ex-United player. However, I hadn't even heard of crowd trouble at Arsenal-Man U matches - I always thought it was the players who were the problem. Can you provide a link for that?
Anyway, how about this for the sentence: "In addition, Arsenal and Manchester United have had a strong on-pitch rivalry since the late 1980s, which has intensified in recent years when both clubs have been competing for the Premier League title." I think that sums it up without getting bogged down in detail. Qwghlm 23:50, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK, have put the new sentence in. Qwghlm 10:33, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

frank lampard[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you take interest in football. Well, actually, I've written an article on Frank Lampard (User:Aabha R/Frank Lampard), and I wanted someone to read it. Can you please look at it for me and give me your comments? I'll be really thankful. The reason I rewrote the article, instead of editing the existing one was that the current article has lines directly picked up from the espnsoccer website, plus it doesn't cover everything. Is it ok to completely rewrite exixting articles like this? Thanks a lot! --Aabha 19:21, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CTOAGN. Thanks a lot for reading the article, and the suggestions. I'll add dates to the tables. The article that I was talking about is here. The sentence in Frank Lampard on 'rising through the ranks at Upton Park', and his qualities as a player look similar. But, yes, I think this is too small a reason to change the article completely, and its absolutely unfair for other editors who have been working on it. I guess it is best to integrate the two, right? How do you suggest that should be done? A lesson in teamwork for me :) Thanks again! Aabha 09:20, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I've merged my article into stuff from the old. I've put in things from Frank Lampard in the intro, the Chelsea subtopic, and the Personal subtopic of my article, and have also put in the interwiki links that are there in the original article. Though, I haven't taken anything from what is there on West Ham. Can you please do that if you think it needs to be done? Do make any changes that you think should be there and I haven't done it. I really hope this will be fine with the other editors. Aabha 09:58, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and about the Swansea City games, the thing is that I couldn't find out what all tournaments he represented them in. I have that '2' in the 'Others' column in the table, but I don't know what these other tournaments were. (the Welsh Cup, or the Football League Trophy?) Also, he scored a total of 24 goals for West Ham in the league, acc to BBC, since he scored 1 for Swansea and has 39 for Chelsea(his total goals in the league are 64), but acc to this, he only got 23 for the Hammers in the league. What should I do?

oh, btw, this is kinda obvious, but this is only to see how the final thing will look..i'm not going to copy-paste it all, only add in stuff, or remove, whatever's the case! Aabha 11:22, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

re:Lampard again[edit]

Hey! Thats alright..take your time. Aabha 04:02, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CTOAGN..you know, if this is going to cause unnecessary controversy, lets just keep everything from the present article as the intro, remove the intro of my article, and just add the subtopics and the tables. If it was something I felt strongly about, or I thought was not right, I would have gone ahead and did it my way, but it isn't anything of that sort. So lets just forget deleting anything and just add stuff. You ought to be constructive, not destructive, right? Aabha 13:51, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please go ahead with starting to merge it, as and when you get the time. Hope you know that the article, as it looks right now, is what I wrote, merged with stuff from the original. Its not all mine!
And, no, don't mention my username or anything in the edit summary.
Thanks for being so prompt with Shevchenko..looks fine to me now. Aabha 15:08, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Higbury's capacity[edit]

To be absolutely honest, I can't say what the total capacity of Highbury was during the 70s and 80s, figures were quite variable (as low as 25k for a crap match) but the top attendances were well over 50k and nearing 60k - I am not sure of what the theoretical maximum was. Arsenal's general lack of success had meant a long-term decline in attendances, alternatively, safety regulations may have reduced the numbers allowed on the terraces.

What you had said in the old edit of the article was that the two terraces - the North Bank and Clock End - had gradually been converted to seating before Hillsborough & the Taylor report, which is definitely not true - they were both terraces all the way through the 80s; the Clock End was converted to seating/boxes in 1990(ish), and the North Bank was totally demolished in 1992 and then rebuilt. The move to all-seater was quite sudden, in historical terms.

Thanks lots for all the help on the article, btw. Am hoping a couple more people will approve, it would be good to have a good example of a decent sport article. :) Qwghlm 22:53, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dorchester 2[edit]

Re: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dorchester Town footballers - when you say merge, do you (1) mean merge content into Dorchester Town F.C., and delete the articles, or (2) merge, and leave the articles as redirects? I have no problem with the former but I do with the latter - people searching Wikipedia for e.g. Nick Jones are unlikely to be looking for the Dorchester footballer. It would also set a bad precedent for other club pages to (ab)use redirects in a similar manner. Qwghlm 09:40, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother you with more blue related things, but I've just placed Manchester City F.C. on peer review, and your input would be welcome. Oldelpaso 16:12, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DAAdshead[edit]

I note that you seemed to be reminiscing about the "Happy Days" when you last posted a note on the Manchester United 1998-1999 page. Presumably you are now an FCUM supporter? Personally know very little about FCUM - although the FCUM Wiki page was quite interesting. I'm afraid I'm a sick individual who has continued to support Manchester United despite the takeover by Uncle Mal. Come to think of it, this whole posting doesn't actually say anything, but I guess Discuss pages on Wikipedia articles are not really the place to hold a conversation!!!DAAdshead 15:26, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds interesting. Always wanted an OT Season Ticket, but I'll never get on the list! Derby was very disappointing - especially being married to a City fan (Yes, I know - I was trying to convert the opposition from the inside - I failed!), but it's always great to get one over on the Scousers! Back to FC, though - how is the season going? As I said, I don't know much about FC at the minute. Quick question - is there a WIKI page on the "Phoenix Fund"? I can't seem to find one. Is the Phoenix Fund part of the FCUM setup or not? I never understood that bit!DAAdshead 09:52, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Only me, again! (Oh, God, no!) Thanks for the suggestion about FCUM on Channel M. Sadly, at present this is not available on SKY TV and - not having a broadband connection, if it's available to view on the Channel M website it wouldn't be much use to me anyway! Have done a bit of looking up on FCUM elsewhere, but probably the best way to find out about it would be to go to a game. Sadly, my wife holds the purse-strings and my leash very tightly (but we won't go there!). Still - I'll see what I can do. (Reluctantly) agree with the point re: fans in crowd after Treble. Since I don't think I put the original comment in I'm not too fussed about seeing it removed. Again.DAAdshead 09:28, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:CTOAGN - Congrats on the Adminship nomination. Much as you don't really need my support on this (you had 40- or 50-odd "Supports" before I added my two-penn'orth) Support you, I have. Two points on your last comment; 1 - I am not hen-pecked by a Blue, and I have her permission to say so. 2 - I would spend considerably more than £7 - but on Coke, to which I have become addicted. Do they sell "proper" coke (Coca-Cola - don't panic!) at FCUM? Or do they go with the Dark (Pepsi) side (or something altogether even cheaper!?) Best of luck with Admin nomination!DAAdshead 15:23, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In response to photos of Treble procession - no, I didn't take the camera! It was a stupid time to do the procession, and I only just got there in time after finishing work! Anyway, the memories are great, but you're right, if anyone has any pictures, they would look fantastic. BTW, I did buy a set of photos (all wrapped up in a Manchester United picture box) from all aspects of the Treble season, but I don't know whether, since I've bought them, I could put them on WP? And if so, how?DAAdshead 10:04, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject on non-league football[edit]

It sounds like a good idea, our British football coverage is quite patchy below the top couple of leagues. I would certainly help out where I can, although my knowledge is pretty much limited to my local teams. Send me a message when you set the project up, and I'll see what I can do. `Rje 13:02, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject on non-league football[edit]

It is definitely a very good idea. I would certainly help out. However, we should also include non-league clubs from other countries as well. For example, non-league clubs in Italy, Spain, Germany and other countries should be included. Send me a message when you set the project up, --Siva1979Talk to me 15:28, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to add my support to having non-league fotoball wikiproject. I'm not entirely sure about non-English stuff... certainly should include Wales and Scotland, though. Tompw 17:21, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm neutral on the idea. I'd probably participate if it was set up, but only irregularly. Oldelpaso 17:58, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you going ahead with this one? If so, drop me a line. Tompw 12:09, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations![edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia 00:03, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your note[edit]

I recognise your concern and I think I've gleaned from what I've read that this is an issue. Let me try and read a little more of the discussion material. I've noticed a little impulsiveness on his part, and I'm hoping my comments will help refocus his view of things. Let me think on it tonight so I can more fully answer your comment. --DanielCD 01:05, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In cases like this you are indeed going to just have to be stern. A while back I had an editor I liked very much get blocked, but the fact is, it had to be done because he was disrupting things, even though his intentions were good. The key thing is the interference with regular business/editing. If it is interfering with people's work, give three warnings, and then do what you need to do. Try to be as diplomatic as possible, but sometimes the call has to be made. However, if you do block, be sure to start with the short-term (24 hrs or so). This sometimes gets the message across. --DanielCD 15:32, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Prudence is generally the only rule that should be needed in things like nominating articles. However, it being human nature to push boundaries, such things often reach a limit and need to be more sharply defined. I'm not quite sure what to suggest there, but a rough consensus that only so many articles are to be nominated per week (if there's nothing in main policy) might work to set a limit until the issue blows over. Nominating too many articles isn't a problem I've seen anywhere else, so it might be better/a lot easier to go the warning/temp block route. --DanielCD 15:57, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, I missed the one week block part. If he's been blocked before, then I'd say another week block is appropriate. I'm still not aware of everything that's transpired here. --DanielCD 14:09, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
