Image problem on "Albright Special" page?

Isn't there a problem with the instructional diagram and the photograph on the stub page for the Albright Special knot (bend)? In an Albright tied correctly (for fishing with monofilament line, anyway), it's important that the tag end and standing part of the light line exit from the same side of the bight in the heavier line. This is not true in the photograph Albright_Special.jpg. It is also not true in the the two middle steps illustrated in Albright_Special_Diagram.jpg, which cannot follow from the first step nor lead to the final step (the first and last steps are correct). (Forgive my ineptness; I've never contributed to Wikipedia before now in any way. I just curiously searched for this knot because it's one I use routinely for fishing.)

"en dash"

Hello - I just noticed your edit to the Bob O'Connor article, about inserting "en dash".

I saw what the edit did. Can you explain to me what that actually does, or what effect it has, versus the actual "-" character? I'm just curious...an opportunity to learn something new. Thanks! NickBurns 21:12, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

• Sure. You can read all about the different style of dashes in the dash article or Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dashes). The en dash is about twice as long as the hyphen, and is used to indicate numeric ranges (among other things). Compare 1-10 vs. 1–10. — brighterorange (talk) 15:06, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

• I appreciate your replacement of hyphens with ndashes. I've done quite a lot of that kind of editing myself, although I change them to "–". I'm not sure how you are doing it. But anyway, my current obsession is with the ordinal congresses, e.g. 1st United States Congress and congressional delegations, e.g. United States Congressional Delegations from Alabama. Most of these have inappropriate hyphens for ranges of years. Do you have a bot that could easily tackle all of these? I sure would appreciate it. Thanks.--Appraiser 15:36, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

• I used to use the html entities exclusively, but I actually think that the unicode characters '–' and '—' are the better way to go because they look better while editing. They're available in the edittools box below the save page button. I don't have a bot for it; I think that there are too many false positive scenarios for it to be totally automatic. However I have been working on a script that can do most of the work with a little human oversight. It's at User:brighterorange/punctuation.js. • I'm not sure which article you're refering to, but you can just recreate it if you want. However, if I deleted it via WP:PROD it probably doesn't have any chance of surviving Articles for Deletion. Image tags

Thanks for the heads up about Image:Lightning Bolt.jpg and Image:BrianChippendale.jpg. You were absolutely right, they were not GFDL at all (those were some of the first images I uploaded as I started to get into Wikipedia, so I didn't know what I was doing). I went ahead and updated/fixed the liscensing and fair use rationales on those and a few other images. Thanks for the friendly reminder and keep up the good work!

Bohr Atom: SVG vs PNG

Hello, I saw that you replaced a PNG with an SVG. Something is wrong, in the process of displaying that picture. Could you revert your change, until the process is fixed? Also, I am working on an article that has some illustrations, and I have spent a good deal of time learning SVG and building my illustrations; seeing what happened to your illustration, disturbs me. Who do we talk to about this?

For your reference (and for forwarding to whoever is in charge), here is what I see, five hours after your change, using both Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer from a Microsoft Windows machine.

Viewing the page Mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, I see the frame for the Bohr atomic model illustration, but that frame is empty.

When I right-click on the empty area and select "Properties", I see that Explorer and Firefox are both trying to show me this file: "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/Bohr_atom_model_English.svg/180px-Bohr_atom_model_English.svg.png".

When I left-click on the empty area, I go to a page titled "Image:Bohr atom model English.svg". That page shows a faint checkerboard pattern in Firefox, and a blank white area in Explorer. When I left-click on the name of the graphic file (below the empty display of same), in either browser, I go to this file (which displays properly in both browsers): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Bohr_atom_model_English.svg

• Yeah, I have seen this problem a few times. I'd like to help fix it, but I expect it's something only the developers can do (probably having to do with a race condition in SVG conversion). Sometimes the images just don't get generated correctly and then they are stuck as completely transparent images; doing an ?action=purge on the image page seems to often fix it. Commons picture of the year

My vote is for image #10. All of these images are lovely, so I can be exremely picky: 1 is a very good shot, but the composition could be improved (the lights in the corners are particularly distracting). 2's composition is perfect, but the image uploaded is very low resolution, and has a currently hip ultrasharpened HDRish look to it that will look very 2000s in a decade or two. 3 is a great animation, but I suspect it will also not age well, and there's something uncomfortably discontinuous about the motion. 4 is an apropos and unintrusive use of animation, but the image quality is actually not that good (low resolution, aliased font, aliasing at edges of moon); I think it also misleadingly suggests that it is actual photographs of the moon. The long exposure of 5 makes it appear blurry at large sizes. The composition of 6 is awesome but the image quality and contrast are only "good". 7 is a perfectly great wildlife photo, but is sort of obvious. Similarly with 8, except that foreground branches are additionally a bit distracting. 9 is wonderful in every way, and would win my favorite photo of the group, but its usefulness in an encyclopedia is limited. 11 is a great encyclopedic capture of a difficult to photograph event; really nothing to criticize about it at all except that the subject is a little mundane. 10 is high quality, and outstanding in its capture of something encyclopedic that would otherwise be basically impossible to see, so it is my pick. I reverted your edit to 1 − 2 + 3 − 4 + · · ·, which has the summary "auto 10 en dash". Besides introducing en dashes, your edit replaced some .png links with .svg links and it even replaced a working picture with a non-existing link. Hey, I noticed you reverted without comment my change (back) from "(b. ___)" to "(born ___)" in the Ira Glass article. Wikipedia style for biographies is to use the full word "born" (especially in this part of the article); you can read this at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Dates of birth and death and in the other examples in the Manual of Style (e.g. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies)). I noticed that you were the person who made the "Kleenex Girl Wonder" page a redirect to Kleenexgirlwonder. The band is more commonly known by the former--this is how they format the name on their website, it's how it appears on most albums, it's how allmusic has it--so I'm curious about why you put the redirect in place and if you'd consider changing it back. • Just that someone had created the page as kleenexgirlwonder and there was no page at Kleenex Girl Wonder at all, so a redirect seemed appropriate. I agree with you, so I just made the change. Zach White article marked for speedy deletion

The article for Zach White wasn't made by him, it was made by a fan of his. He was an important gay rights activist in the community and a CBS made for tv movie is going to be made about his struggle in central Ohio pretty soon. Please leave it up, his page is recent deaths was also deleted as soon as it was put up, and no one can figure out why. He did everyone in B.C. and the rest of the world a favor, his story just needs to be heard, as it has been in most parts of Ohio.

Missed some en-dashes?

Thanks for your recent edit to Daylight saving time that replaced hyphens with en-dashes. However, I noticed that it missed several hyphens. I made several other edits by hand to complete the process. You might want to look at the by-hand edits and see whether they can be used to improve the robot in the future. • It's not a bot, it's a client-side script, but it does automates the process with a little oversight from the user. (There are lots of things that cause false positives, so I don't think there's much hope for full automation.) I hope to make it available for wider use as part of [[WP:.|project punctuation]] soon. Tulane shield/badjpg

I continue to by mystified as to why if we can only display something at low resolution under fair use that we would want to use .svg rather than .jpg. Asking Tulane University to publish its trademarks as vector files for free distribution seems a bit presumptuous. --Dystopos 14:34, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

• I don't see why you say "free distribution"? The logo would still be protected under trademark and copyright. I believe it's preferable to use SVG even for fair use logos because it allows us to prepare our articles for print as well as be future-proof against increasing screen resolutions. In this particular case, though, a bitmap image in a lossless format like PNG would be far better than the JPEG, which shows visible artifacts in the solid color areas. SVG images on you Userpage

You had a not above the gallery about SVGs not rendering properly in galleries. I converted them to a table and used defined sizes, and now they render fine. I spend two and a half hours trying t figure out how to make the captions simulate the appearance of the gallery captions, but it didn't work. What's on your page now is the best I could do. Super Mario RPG lists

Currently, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has two lists pertaining to it (List of characters in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). User:TTN decided it would be best to merge the lists into the main article and split Smithy Gang into those articles. I recently merged Smithy Gang into the list of chatacters by removing the non-notable characters, and I have asserted that a cameo section in the list of characters is valid, per Wikipedia:Trivia sections and Wikipedia:Handling trivia that uses Alex Trebek#Cameos as a good example. I have suggested that we rename the articles per Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves to something along the lines of Characters of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and World of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Mushroom Kingdom (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) just like Characters of Final Fantasy VIII and World of Final Fantasy VI or Gaia (Final Fantasy VII). I believe if these articles are to evolve beyond a non-notable list, they should be renamed. For example, List of Final Fantasy VII locations was merged into Gaia (Final Fantasy VII), because a World article is notable, but a simple list of locations is not. That is why there are other secions of the article to make it a World article. It simply has not been renamed yet.

TTN believes the citations in the development and reception sections of the list of locations, books and magazines, are trivial sources. When I added that the 3D perspective of the game is reminicent of Equinox to the main article, TTN removed it since my souce was "the opinions of the Nintendo Power player's guide writers". Although it was actually Nintendo Power magazine, I do believe a magazine is a reliable source, and I gave a page from Next Generation Magazine which also said the same thing. In addition, I was surprized that TTN said that it was from the players guide, since he claims to own the players guide for the game. He has not verified this, since I asked him for citations in May, "Could you look in the back of the Player's Guide and tell me what “types” of … Magic? I forgot what they call it in the game … well, anyways, what types of Special Attack or whatever it is (actually, could you find out what it's called?) there are? I remember some vaguely when I owned the guide like “Fire”, “Jump”, “Electricity?”, etc. Could you provide a citation, like the page number with a quote in context?" TTN replied that he was going to "get to it" (User talk:TTN/Archive 5#List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). TTN claims the player's guide is "at the bottom of a box that's behind at least five others in a cramped space". Seeing that TTN did not recognize that the page was not from the player's guide when I provided a scan of the page in question from Nintendo Power shocked me. However, I have continued to assume good faith by not questioning TTN's honesty.

Per Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus can change, I have offered five different reasonable, temporary compromises that might integrate my idea with TTN's.

1. Go over the list of characters so we can delete non–notable characters
2. Rename the articles by following the steps at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves.
3. Cut down the geography section list of locations by cutting it into the regional maps the adventures use when traveling from one to another. I can get pictures and write the fair use rationals, and someone can cut down the text that has no citation and does not allude to other media.
4. Write the concept and creation and reception sections for the list of characters
5. Write the concept and creation section for the main article

TTN rejected my compromise because it still keeps the articles. I agreed I would consider a redirect, but Wikipedia:Article size does not allow that, since the list of locations is currently 82 KB long. Instead, I agreed to help cut down the geography section that is the bulk of the article, but TTN rejected that as well because TTN states, "I am not interested in working on the article in regards to improving it." and "get past this "having sources automatically means that this information is good" mentality." TTN states, "I don't think they have or will ever assert notability." I have replied with, "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so if you don't think the articles will ever assert notability, we cannot yet know this, per Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions#I don't like it.

City, State single links converted to two links

I see that you are deeply involved in converting US city/state single links to two different wikilinks. Why? Did I miss the memo? I would much rather see one link for San Francisco, California (for example) than two. Binksternet 06:13, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

• Because the City, State naming convention is for disambiguation (the name of the city is San Francisco). We don't link Lombard Street (San Francisco) in articles; we write "Lombard Street in San Francisco". The main point of that edit was to fix the spacing of the reference, but my script also automatically fixes the syntax of the <br> tag so that it is valid XHTML (in XHTML, a tag that has no matching closing tag, like <references />, must use this self-closing syntax). It doesn't affect the page rendering, so I only bother to make that change when there are real fixes to be made as well. I just noticed that MediaWiki now (?) renders a bare <br> tag as the XHTML-compliant <br />, so the point may be moot except for applications that try to parse the HTML contained within the Wiki source but that are somehow confused by invalid XML. City-state changes

Hi,

What's the rationale for these edits? We shouldn't be taking unambiguous links like Nashville, Tennessee and splitting them into two separate links unless there's reason to believe that both city and state are particularly relevant to the article. This is mistaken IMO. The disambiguation is for the benefit of readers, not for the benefit of making the link point to the correct location. It ensures that readers know which Nashville is being discussed, and if they've never heard of Nashville it gives them an appropriate frame of reference. What's definitely not right is splitting these links up, which results in run-on links where the second part is only tangentially related to the article (and thus doesn't really need a link). I'm going to reverse these changes in future unless there's reason to believe that the two-link version adds clarity to an article. Chris Cunningham 08:28, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Well, you can revert if you want, but this is pretty common style. I don't understand when you say that disambiguation is for the benefit of readers; in an article we generally link to disambiguated pages using only the base name for that article and hide the disambiguation part. That's why the pipe trick exists, and works for comma as well as parentheses. There's also the (usually substed) {{city-state}} template that does the same thing. Are you objecting just to the fact that Tennessee is linked in Nashville, Tennessee? Otherwise, I don't understand. — brighterorange (talk) 14:22, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

You had this argument already at #City, State single links converted to two links. The point is as follows:

1. Nashville, Tennessee links to the correct Nashville. Per WP:MOSLINKS#Content, it is better to link a whole phrase which provides context than just to a fragment if the current version goes to the right place.
2. In most cases, the reason for linking to Nashville, Tennessee or Sacramento, California is not as an attempt to avoid redirects; it's an attempt to provide a bit of context.
3. "Tennessee" isn't important. So it shouldn't be linked unless, per WP:MOSLINKS#Form, it would avoid having to pipe things. In the case of Nashville, Tennessee, we're basically just wasting pipes.
4. "It's common on Wikipedia" is just a rephrasing of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS where the reason it's common isn't through deliberate effort. This is the first time I've seen this style being used deliberately (I've never come across {{city-state}}, but suffice to say I disagree with it), and like the user above who questioned you on it I don't believe it's useful or necessary.

In regard to (4) I think in a stylistic argument it is reasonable to refer to style used elsewhere in the encyclopedia as evidence that the style is acceptable. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is an essay about deletion, not style! I don't deny that there are some people that disagree (when aren't there?) but there are also people that agree. Look a bit and you'll see it all over the place. Take the lead sentence of University of Western Ontario, for instance; it links to London, Ontario, not London, Ontario. Do you think that's wrong?

For (3) I suppose it depends on context whether the state is important, but I don't have anything against "Nashville, Tennessee." We do generally link place names, though. What does it mean to be "wasting pipes"?

In response to (1) I don't believe WP:MOSLINKS#Content is relevant because Nashville, Tennessee is disambiguation, not a phrase. It is not the name of the city. The reasoning is the same as for other disambiguations like Georgia (U.S. State).

Finally, let me mention that the reason I prefer doing this is not just semantic but aesthetic: commas look terrible in links because they intersect the underline. — brighterorange (talk) 16:07, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS might be directly concerning deletion requests, but it's very commonly linked to to at least convey the meaning; that Wikipedia is really rather huge, and therefore it'll almost always be possible to find an existing example of whatever thing people are trying to dissuade a user from doing. In the UWO article, yes I think it's wrong, and had I the desire to add even more random pages to my watchlist I'd go and correct it right now.

"wasting pipes" was just a cute way of saying that "Nashville, Tennessee" uses up an extra dozen bytes on Wikipedia for absolutely no benefit to a single soul.

And "Nashville, Tennessee" is not "disambiguation" in the Wikipedia sense (well, it is, but that's an altogether different kind of thing); it's clarification in the normal manner of introductory prose for subjects that the reader may not be intimately familiar with. I think you and I differ on what the purpose of disambiguation is, but that means I don't find your argument very persuasive. Essentially, I think that we should not let the arbitrary naming conventions of Wikipedia articles infect the prose of the articles that link to them. I'm particularly surprised that you think the UWO article was in error. There are loads of articles that use this style, particularly in the lead. I think Canada is notable in this case because the sentence in which it is linked specifically draws a comparison to the rest of Canada's universities. As for "infecting the prose", I don't think this is the case at all. I think it's pretty conventional to refer to London, Ontario instead of London, Canada, and the article prose definitely needs to point out that it's not London, England, but it's fairly arbitary. I would refer to my currently location as Linlithgow, Scotland in articles normally, even though Linlithgow isn't a disambig page - I may go for Linlithgow, West Lothian if I were editing an article with a uniquely Scottish context. In any case, I don't generally think that any part of the location is assumed to be notable (and hence worth linking to as a matter of course) except the town or city. Basically I had stopped doing the wikipedia thing because I got tired of babysitting Peter Ekman (the notorious groper of eXile infamy).

But this article for LAHS had atrophied so much that I was kind of offended after all the work I put into creating it. Apparently LAHS is most notable for the rate it graduates Wikipedia vandals. I saw that you got rid of some of that, btw, so thanks. Anyway I went back and fixed it up. I know you're busy with the PhD and everything but when you get a chance maybe you could advise me how I could take the horribly pixelated LAHS logo and turn it into a smooth vector graphic. SVGs?

Hi Brighter

I was wondering if you could help at all? You flagged up at the FAC for Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C. that the graphs should be in SVG format, not JPG. I went ahead and created Image:NPLOneGates.svg, but it doesn't display correctly. It seems to have made it onto the server, as if you click on the empty space where it should be then the image opens, but it doesn't display within the page itself. Any idea what I've done wrong?

It is displaying now, but it looks like something's wrong. Did you auto-trace a bitmap image to produce this? That will produce bad results for line art like this. Makeoutclub Wiki Entry

The initial entry I had made last September seemingly cleared the deletion hurdle and then it was expanded much more elaborately by wiki user drhamad. Since then, it has not only been edited heavily but now is marked as a contender for deletion and I can't figure out why. I am interested in starting a WikiProject on Investment. As you know, investment is both a rich and critical topic. Most critically, investment is a way to get rich. Har-Har. Astonishingly there is no such project out there devoted primarily to improving the many articles on investment. The closest I can find is economics which, as you know, is far too general.

Investment articles are in need of improvement! Please examine Exchange Traded Fund for instance to see what a tragedy of the commons we have gotten ourselves into.

At offset, I would venture to state that the goal of WikiProject Investment is to improve the usability of investment articles for investors while still adhering to encyclopediac standards. Of course investment is a topic with countless ideas: the marketplace of ideas is the very heart of capitalism! One of the critical challenges these articles face is giving salient examples of firms, funds, strategies or investment resources while maintaining NPOV and Notability. A series of standards and guidelines for these unique issues could benefit all of Wikidom.

Yeah, it's on a user subpage user:brighterorange/punctuation.js so it's already GFDL. You can try using it, if you want. The intention is to make it more user-friendly and document it so that it's actually pleasant to use, but it will always need manual supervision because of its moderately high false positive rate. • To use it, click the 'punctuation' tab on an edit page. If it finds any problems, they will be listed in a series of excerpts (one per line), with the change highlighted in red. If the change is good, do nothing. If it's bad click it and it will be undone. Don't edit the page while you're using the script, since whenever you click on one of those it overwrites any changes in the edit box. (Sometimes an excerpt will suggest a different manual fix; just do those after you're done disabling any false positives.) The boxes at the top with ON/OFF/HIDE don't work, and there's no reason to do the "click this when done with changes." This is just because I haven't gotten around to finishing those yet.
• Be careful, especially with dashes in URLs, links, or templates, since these can break the page. There's some attempt to detect problem cases automatically but there are thousands of different kinds of things that might happen. I welcome your suggestions for the to-do list, at least.

I used the script in Internet Explorer, and it worked perfectly. It did, however, try to make endashes in an ISSN and a DOI, which I assumed to be incorrect. Thanks for trying it! Yes, there are many false positives. It does try to detect and avoid some of them and I should improve it more, but it is harder than it seems. Please do not convert Weehawken, New Jersey into [[Weehawken, New Jersey]], [[New Jersey]]. One reason we use city, state is to make linking simple and intuitive; this is not helped by making five redundant links to New Jersey in one article. The minority of readers who are reading about Hamilton and need to know where New Jersey is will have to click first on Weehawken and then on the mention of New Jersey in its first line; this minor inconvenience is the price to avoid absurdity.

More feedback

I ran your lovely punctuation script again, and I noticed something you might want to tweak: As it stands, the script deletes extra spaces in front of commas. However, the script does not deal with extra spaces after punctuation. I've often seen two spaces after a period/comma, and I assumed the script would fix it. Well, double spaces don't change the way the page is rendered, so I don't propose any changes of that sort (I guess the exception is the <br /> change) because I think it would be too annoying. However, if there's a space before the comma it does normalize space after it to a single one while fixing it. For periods, a double space after a full-stop is considered correct by many people from the typewriter days (and people trained by those people), so that would be a bad thing to change. That said, it might make sense to do some overall whitespace normalization when the script is going to be making other changes anyway. It'd have to be careful not to change stuff like manually aligned tables—I'm thinking of whitespace at the end of a line, for example. — brighterorange (talk) 12:04, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

While using your script, I noticed a new problem, though I don't know if it's actually new or if I simply hadn't noticed it before. I ran the script on this revision of Helium then clicked on one of the endash suggestions (an ISSN) to turn it off. I clicked on it again to try to turn it back on, and it didn't work. I tried this with a few of the other suggestions just to check, and the same thing happened. Conflicting scripts

Hi Brighter Orange. I had your User:Brighterorange/punctuation.js script installed in my monobook, and then I added Lightmouse's User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js script. They both add a new tab when the edit window is open, and yours seems to always override Lightmouse's. Is there a way they can work side-by-side, or would both scripts have to be copy/pasted into one new script in order to get them to work. Hmm, both of the scripts should be able to add tabs independently, but they look like they're doing it using different mechanisms (I am calling addTab and Lightmouse is calling addPortletLink). Punctuation script

Hi BrighterOrange. I've been using the script and noticed that it changes [[Los Angeles, California]] to [[Los Angeles, California|]], [[California]] However, at the MOS talk page, this discussion and this one both seem to point towards [[Los Angeles, California]] due to WP:Overlinking.

I prefer the separate links personally (see the discussions above) but they are not universally popular (see the discussions above) and I don't want to rock the boat. So I've been planning on turning those off by default, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
