A little help[edit]

Hi. We need more third person views on this. Can you help? The user is reverting constructive edits without providing a valid reason; only insulting the editor in return. Two users have already viewed this, but hasnt yet come to a conclusion. I am looking forward to restoring the edit, if the move is believed to be right. Thanks and regards. Rory Gallagher[edit]

Hi Bearcat, I noticed you removed the Blues-rock category from Rory Gallagher's Stage Struck, and wondered why. Is it because it is a DVD and not a CD? Because Rory Gallagher is about as Blues-rock as one could get! Either way, I am attempting to find other editors to assist in addressing his article which was at a virtual standstill since 2005. I've begun (just in the earliest years so far) to edit his article, adding references. If you, or anyone you might know would be willing to assist with this, I'd be grateful, especially in Gallagher's massive discography, album articles, and reliable sources. Thanks. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:58, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks then. If you do know of a good discographer, have a glance at Gallagher's article!! Nightmare, since it doesn't even cover session work. I would be indebted if you could recommmend anyone who could at least set up a good framework, and I could fill in the rest. If not, don't worry about responding to me. Thanks for your time. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:23, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Articles I Have Created[edit]

I have seen the discussion at the Canadian Wikipedians' notice board. I did create a lot of articles in a short amount of time and now I realize that I should not have I should have looked for more references and tried to add more context to the articles. I will do my best to try to organize the articles into there correct category and tidy up the mess. If you need to delete any of the geographical articles i mass created feel free to do so under G7: One author who has requested deletion or blanked the page. Mass deletion of non-hamlets in Alberta[edit]

Hi Bearcat, I've noticed your involvement on various talk pages regarding this topic. It appears that all will be resolved as keeps instead of deletions. I just wanted to apprise you of my comments on User talk:117Avenue#Mass deletion of Alberta settlements, User talk:117Avenue#Bearberry, Alberta, and User talk:117Avenue#College Heights, Alberta, if you hadn't noticed already. If you notice that one or more of the 110+ communities actually end up being deleted, please advise as I'd be curious to know why and perhaps I could rationalize the reversal of the deleted communities based on my extensive knowledge of municipality types and unincorporated settlement types in Alberta. Cheers, --Hwy43 (talk) 06:54, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello my friend[edit]

So things are good with you i hope....:) ..I am sure you have noticed your Wikipedia:WikiProject Canadian music being over run by me :) ... I am hoping with new portal and me tagging all i can...we should get a few more helpers..well that what i hope. Was wondering if you could give the Project page a quick view make sure all is ok... and i am not sure were any of the Portal sub pages go as for categories. ......Tks man!! I agree 100% with your position that the spelling should be as it is actually spelled in Canada, not a theoretical "Polish" spelling. I am wondering if you think the same principle might also apply to the indicated pronunciation of her name. A few months ago, the pronunciation was changed to what is apparently the proper "Polish" pronunciation[1], with the "l" sounding as a "w", but the cited source remains a recorded radio interview with her, to which I listed in its entirety (not such a hardship given her charming personality and lovely songs); she never said her own name, while (IIRC) the interviewer said it once only, pronouncing it "BASH-uh Boo-Lat" (more or less equal accents on the last 2 syllables). Unfortunately the interview no longer seems to be available at the provided link. This is not exactly compelling evidence, but it's still more than there is for "BOO-wat"--I don't live in Canada, but does anyone actually say it that way? What do you think? (I'll watch for your answer here.) Thanks. --Arxiloxos (talk) 07:13, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Taylor[edit]

Bearcat, POV does not consider whether the subject has a point of view. In any case, am I right to conclude that you live in Toronto Centre and support a rival candidate? If so your actions in truncating information concerning a rival candidate could in themselves appear to be POV. Fred the happy man (talk) 15:35, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You assume wrong, I don't live in Toronto Centre, am not a Pamela Taylor supporter and would not vote Tory in any case. Take a look at my edit history and you'll see my edits in regards to political candidates are rather broad. You haven't denied being a Toronto Centre resident or a supporter of one of Taylor's opponents, however. Fred the happy man (talk) 15:46, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's easier to be neutral and dispassionate when it comes to politicians running in ridings other than one's own and who are running in races in which you don't back a particular candidate. You still haven't answered the question regarding whether you live in Toronto Centre and whether you back one of her opponents. Just say no and no if both of those assertions are false. If they aren't false then maybe, notwithstanding the fact that you have a record of neutrality when it comes to other candidates and other races, you should take a pass on editing articles on candidates in this particular election. Even the most neutral people have a bias in some instances. Fred the happy man (talk) 15:59, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Bearcat! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 226 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 940 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Gerard Kennedy rumours about a mayoral run[edit]

There are still rumours floating about here in Parkdale--High Park about GK running for mayor. These are still active, due to the real possibility that he may be prohibited from running in the 41st federal election, because he missed "drop-dead" deadlines imposed by Elections Canada, regarding his failed Liberal Leadership bid. I personally think it is unlikely that he will run for mayor, because if he can't raise the money for his leadership financial debts, how, under almost exactly the same fundraising rules, would he expect to raise over a million dollars to run for mayor? As I said, the rumour is persistant, but ultimately not likely. Therefore, I don't think it should be added to what is already there on the subject in the 2010 Toronto Municipal Election page.

Speaking of the 2010 Toronto Municipal Election page, it's a mess. I find it hard to navigate. I think it is already large enough that some of its sections should be segmented into separate articles, much the way we did it for the 2007 Ontario provincial election. As for the wards, they should be placed into the four regional councils, so my riding, Parkdale--High Park, would have one Ward (14) with the Toronto and East York Council, and Ward 13 would be in the Etobicoke and York Council, for instance. What do you think?--Abebenjoe (talk) 22:59, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article on Gregory Whitehead[edit]

Once again, you have deleted the article I wrote about Gregory Whitehead. If you looked, which I don't think you did, you would have found that it was undeleted by one of the Wikipedia admins, before you deleted it the second time.

After you deleted it the first time, I added a reference to it. Did you note that? The reference cites one of the books in which his work is discussed.

He is widely regarded as one of the leading audio artists of our time.

What is your problem with this article, please?

Hi there[edit]

I noticed this user was trying to slip their *chan into imageboard a while ago, but as it was unsourced and not notable they were given a final warning for their constant attempts to revert people who corrected the article (their former IP was blocked).

This problem has been solved, however the same user appears to be trying to put their *chan into the hurr article, which was formerly a redirect. The article itself is very short and unsourced, so I was just wondering if this subtle advertising was allowed or not.

Thanks! 222.116.210.143 (talk) 07:27, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notability Claim[edit]

Why did you place a Notability claim on Divnich. Seems as if everything is properly sourced and notability is there. Maybe I am just a gaming fanboy and admitted nerd, but he is famous in the gaming industry. I see you watch over a lot of Canadian articles and I see Divnich is Canadian, but judging from the sources, television interviews, and news articles, it seems he is more notable in America than Canada. In fact, if it wasn't for one interview that mentions he was Canadian, I would have thought he was American. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.36.18.209 (talk) 02:06, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How do you constitute WallStreetJournal articles as blogs or internet forums? Or even the interview about him and his startup The simExchange? Additionally, have you read a Forbes magazine? Scott Hill Notability[edit]

Sorry I'm a bit new to this but is there any help you can provide on what I need to do in getting the notability warning off of the Scott Hill page? I did go in and add a bunch of references throughout but it appears that wasn't enough. Although on a quick check it seems there are many examples out there without this error and less references. I'm sure it's quite likely that I'm just missing something obvious but any help would be greatly appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksnyde (talkcontribs) 10:53, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me with this request[edit]

Dear Bearcat,

I have request the undeletion of the Wikipedia photo of former Conservative Party of Canada leader Senator John Lynch-Staunton. He is the only Conservative Party of Canada leader to have a photo present on Wikipedia. I have done this under the photo's former title (File:Johnlynchstaunton.jpg) I have added the template needed to provide a request for it undeletion. The template has been present on the page of the former title for a few days and still hasn't been undeleted and also has not been addressed by any administrator. So I posted this request asking for you to undelete the photo for me and address the Copyright issues.

Thanks, please post in my talk section when you got this done -Zxcvxxcxcx (talk) 04:22, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Can you remove the thing that automatically adds the category for [[:Category:<insert state> counties>]] because most of them already have its own county, like Category:Wood County, Wisconsin, that already has Wisconsin counties as a subcategory, which eliminates the need for Category:Wisconsin counties to be on the article for the county. Thanks, Razorflame

Revised article on Gregory Whitehead[edit]

I've put together more references concerning the Gregory Whitehead article and posted it on Wikipedia. Have a look. But I'd like to also take issue with some of the things you said, Bearcat. Here's what you said:

“Linking to a page on amazon.com does not count as a valid, reliable reference that demonstrates notability. The book itself most likely wouldn't survive a notability check if somebody wrote an article about it, and neither would the author - and if the source itself isn't notable, then referencing it can't validly prove the notability of something else.

It's the same criterion by which a mention in The New York Times counts for far more in the notability sweepstakes than a mention in the North Cumberpatch, Montana Pennysaver - if the source itself isn't notable enough, then being mentioned in it doesn't demonstrate notability.

It would be acceptable to use the book as one source among several, if you can provide, say, newspaper articles about him - but it can't be the article's only source if it isn't notable itself.ʺ

The book I referenced is by Allen S. Weiss. He has written several books on audio art, as you can see at http://www.librarything.com/author/weissallens . If this doesn't qualify him as a strong reference on audio art, I don't know what does. Also, if you clicked the link to the Weiss book I cited and looked inside the book, you'd see that there's a whole chapter on the work of Gregory Whitehead.

The new references I've put together include The Guardian and The New York Times. But, Bearcat, notability in avant garde art such as Whitehead creates cannot be judged by newspaper references. It is far more noteworthy to have a prominent critic such as Weiss write about one's work in the extensive way Weiss has done with Whitehead's work.

However, even that is not really what makes work notable. It is the work itself, Bearcat. Have you listened to any of Gregory Whitehead's work? I take it you haven't. Here are a couple of links.

http://www.ubu.com/sound/whitehead.html http://writing.upenn.edu/pennsound/x/Whitehead.html

In a culture where Britney Spears is more notable than the best artists of the time, the importance of art must be judged carefully and with experience and knowledge of the type of art. Looking at newspaper articles and what others say about the work is for those who know nothing of the art itself.

However, the references I've put together now should be sufficient for you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vispo (talkcontribs) 10:15, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Laurier and Chrétien[edit]

What makes you so sure that Laurier and Chrétien contributed greatly to French Canadian society?

Did you ever consider what French Canada would be like if Laurier had not named Clifford Sifton to populate the western provinces, and if the one million French Canadians had been given a chance to migrate to western Canada instead of the New England states? Canada would have more than one french speaking province. For sure Manitoba and Saskachewan would be French speaking, as they were before the massive immigration policies of Clifford Sifton. He preferred British, Americans, Ukranians, and Germans to French Canadians. Charging them double the fee to go out west than the British arriving from the UK. What about the schooling system in Manitoba, it was Laurier who did nothing to protect the French schools. How can this man be important in the history of French Canada? Now Chrétien, was it not Chrétien who was Trudeau"s bulldog against the French Canadian rights to equality? He was the instigator that turned all the provinces, who had been for Québec the day before, against Québec the day after. (The night of the long knives) Was it not Chrétien who moved the century old Saint-Jean Military college to Kingston, regardless of all the hardships that were caused to the French Canadian military and their families. It took Harper to bring it back. Yes Harper has done more for French Canadians than Laurier and Chrétien thus far. You consider yourself intelligent, well think of the people who put French Canadians on the map. The first one without any doubt is Samuel de Champlain. Without his perseverence in establishing a colony in Canada, there would be no Canada and no French Canadians. Second would be Jean Talon; was it not for Jean Talon, their would have been hardly any immigrants coming from France. He was responsible for the 10,000 that came and that call themselves French Canadians today. Then what about guys like LaSalle, Pierre Lemoyne d'Iberville and Pierre de La Vérendrye, who increased the French Canadian holdings in North America by their foundings of the Great Lakes settlements in the mid-west and Louisiana. Then there is Louis-Joseph Papineau who fought for the rights of French Canadians and founded the Canadien party. Also, Honoré Mercier who wanted French Canadians to be able to immigrate anywhere in Canada and who wanted equal status for French Canadians. Louis Riel who fought for his Métis people and for their culture and language. Henri Bourassa who was an intellect and founder of Le Devoir. Camillien Houde who fought against forced conscription during WW2. Maurice Richard who was able to gather the sympathy of all French Canadians. Finally, whether you like him or not, René Lévesque did a lot to bring equally for French Canadians and language rights. He turned the tide that Laurier had brought in, that had disfavored French Canadians in Canada. So, before putting traitors like Laurier and Chrétien, you should be more objective in your choice of famous French Canadian people, who did much for the advancement of their society and their own people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.254.43.67 (talk) 19:09, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adam Giambrone article[edit]

A minor correction should be made on the second photo. The woman pictured with Adam is his girlfriend, not his wife, as the caption states. The Toronto Star got that wrong last week, and had to retract that. Second time he's been "outed" for something he isn't: in this case, married.--Abebenjoe (talk) 16:18, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're being overly protective of the Adam Gimabrone article, in the sense that you are making a POV statement about his youtube video, which is famous. It is embarrassing for him too, but he made it, and it *is* famous. It is a neutral contribution simply based on the fact that it exists. Advice[edit]

Hi Bearcat, I just saw your punctuation edits to Brendan Burke and I wanted your style/editing advice. In terms of scientific publication writing, I've known references to be inserted after the text and before the punctuation. However, I've also experienced other styles of in-text references that format the way you did there. Do you know if that is the Wikipedia style standard? If so, I probably know a few articles I can work on fixing. Thanks!Luminum (talk) 02:24, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question on references[edit]

Bearcat, I know your busy but was wondering if you could take a second and help me. The reason I'm asking you, is because I saw where you fixed my addition of a reference in the Abel LeBlanc article. I've looked through the help section, but there is just so much info there, I get lost easily. What I would like to know is the proper format when adding references to sources not online, particularly newspaper articles. (I have many older Globe and Mail articles which could be used as sources in articles that at the moment have no references at all)

A second, but less important problem if you don't have the time deals with references like the one you fixed above. When adding references, I prefer to use CBC articles as for the most part, they remain active. Articles from the Halifax Chronicle Herald are often used, but remain active for short periods of time. If an editor includes all info on Herald articles, like title and date, then at least we know where it can be found, however some just add the link and once its dead, there is no way to know the title or date etc. Look at the example found in the Neil LeBlanc article. Whoever added the link, failed to leave the date, which in my opinion leaves the reference useless as it now appears. I know I'm jumping around here, but I hope I'm making sense. I guess what I could do, is if I found a Herald article referenced by link that was still active, I could just fill in the rest of the info myself. I'm curious as to your views on the reference that I provided as an example. Thanking you in advance. Cmr08 (talk) 02:15, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'll use the simple format you suggested. I had added a reference to another article the same way, so I went back and changed it. As for the offline links, since there better than no link, I'll add them if no online link is already sourced. Once again, thanks, this is a big help. Cmr08 (talk) 03:36, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your removal of early Canadiens was mean and spiteful[edit]

What was covered had not been covered in French Canadians. It is illogical and incomprehensive what you did. I took time and much effort to do that. Who are you to destroy what I did. It does not make me like wikipedia or wish to contribute anymore of my time to this. --142.169.118.147 (talk) 21:39, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What consensus?[edit]

The consensus of 3 or 4 people is not much of a consensus! Let's talk about removal. You removed Julie Payette who went twice into space. An excellent representative of Canada and who was chosen by the Olympic comittee along with seven of the top Canadians to carry the Olympic flag last night during the opening ceremony in Vancouver. (maybe you were to busy criticizing other people to watch) What about Calixa Lavalléé? He wrote the national anthem and you removed him. What about Samuel de Champlain? He is not even there, and he founded Canada. What makes you 3 or 4 people more clever and intelligent than the rest of us. Also, you don't need a criminal record to be a liar. Many lawyers are just that! Why don't you lighten up, I don't like your harsh rethoric. Furthermore, I hate the words French Canadian. Last night at the Olympics, they said Francophone Canadians, sounds much better. In the US, they call themselves Franco-Americans, not French Americans. Sounds stupid! No wonder people in Québec call themselves Québécois now. They hate the French and the combination of the two is racist and bias! Makes you sick to hear it! --142.169.118.147 (talk) 00:22, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the Explanation[edit]

Okay Bearcat!

I appreciate that you took time to answer me and I view you differently than our previous encounters. I fully understand your dilemma with the pictures and do not have any intention of countering your decision.

However, I don't completely agree with you about the French Canadian ethnic issue, since the French Canadian terminology was an english labeling of the Canadien people. That is why I started the page on Early Canadiens. In the early 1800's, the major party in Lower Canada, (Québec) was the Canadien party. There were Canadien newspapers, and people called themselves Canadiens. Where do you think the Montréal Canadiens got their name. I grew up in New England, and all major industrial centers had Little Canadas. The Franco- Americans, (not French Americans) considered their ancesters as Canadiens. Remember, they arrive between 1860 and the Great Depression. They never found out about the Québec independence movement and the Parti Québécois. Just like the Canadiens never witnessed the French Revolution and the changing of the basic culture, customs, and even language of France, where the King's language spoken by Canadiens ended with the decapitation of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. I had a university professor who wrote a Book on Lower Canadien history, and no one told him he could not write it because it was part of the history of Canada or of Québec. I wanted to give a more in-depth history on the 17th and 18th century Canadiens and not a 19th and 20th century one which exists with the page on French Canadians. Furthermore, I wanted to talk more about the Canadien nation builders such as the Huguenots, the Catholic church, LaSalle, Pierre Lemoyne d'Iberville, de La Vérendrye, etc., which I feel lacks in the French Canadian page. The Habitant, is a different story.

So, now that you know what I wanted to do, since I was only at the beginning, could you find a name for my page that would best suit what I am trying to do. I don't feel that it quite fits with French Canadian or Habitant. Thank you for your understanding! --142.169.118.147 (talk) 05:41, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to ask you to restore this page. Not to the copyvio state it was in when you deleted it, but rather to the proper Soft Redirect that had been at that location for approaching 2.5 year. The "Gallery" had replaced the soft redirect only a week or two before the deletion. The soft redirect pointed to Wiki-commons. It's annoying to see a 1-2 week change cause the deletion of a long-standing valid soft redirect. - TexasAndroid (talk) 06:15, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But what I can do, if you'd like, is to restore it as a userspace page so that you can work on it in the meantime? Bearcat (talk) 22:55, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Joel Plaskett[edit]

I know why someone would do it that way, but in truth, there is no difference between "Joel Plaskett" and "Joel Plaskett Emergency". They are one in the same. So the Joel Plaskett chronology should include all his non-"Thrush Hermit" albums whether they be "Emergency" or not. And that is really what it is, a Joel Plaskett chronology. If Trent Reznor one day releases an album as "Trent Reznor", would you start a new chronology? No, you would just add to the Nine Inch Nails chronology because they are all Trent Reznor. No difference here. --Morphiousdeckard (talk) 20:49, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now that I have thought about it a little more, a much better example is Matthew Good. In his chronology, "Avalanche" continues on from "The Audio of Being" as it should, even though one was recorded as the Matthew Good Band and one as just Matthew Good. Why? Because MGB or solo, they are all Matthew Good and his chronology should be continuous. Just like Joel Plaskett. --Morphiousdeckard (talk) 19:36, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not take it amiss, but I need to ask with respect to the prods, whether you have in fact checked for sources or are nominating on the basis that there are none in the article? In the first case, it's your subject more than mine, and know the quality of your work and I'm certainly not going to do the needless work of duplicating your search. But if you have not searched to see whether there might not be sourced that will make the people notable, I would need to check in every case, as I do not think it is the current policy that we delete for merely being unsourced at the time. I agree that there is not present guideline that losing candidates in national elections are presumed notable , (though as you probably know, I think there ought to be such a guideline), but there is always the possibility that there might be enough sources to meet the GNG. I'm sure you understand this is a friendly question. DGG ( talk ) 01:48, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Someone had added what appears to be a tribute to the subject, with stories about her and alot of unsourced material, not to mention very little of the article follows wikipedia policy. The editor who added all this has for the most part, only edited this article, so it's probably someone with a personal interest in the subject. I've tried to clean some of these up, but I have one other question for you. If articles can be proven to be complete copy and paste jobs, what should we do? Do we just clean them up the best we can per WP:MOSBIO, or is it appropiate to revert the copy and pasted material? Most of the time its easy to prove because its usually pasted from a website that happens to be listed as an external link. Peer Review: David Lewis (politician)[edit]

Hi Bearcat, wondering if you'd be interested in peer reviewing an article I've been working on over the past few years, David Lewis (politician). The article Junkhouse has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Small amount of notability asserted in article but not backup up by independent sources. See WP:BAND.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

A tag has been placed on Colin Cripps requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Redlink bands[edit]

Thanks This isn't the first time I've gone through this, but I'm just stupid when it comes to remembering what goes to AfD/CfD and what constitutes speedy criteria. It's usually just easier and safer to nominate it for a full discussion as it can then be closed as speedy and deleted, whereas if it's nominated for speedy and it doesn't fit the criteria, I would have to see that and renominate it all over again. The {{db}} tags are a good thing to remember though, as it would bypass any discussion anyway. Thanks again. R3-30 number-ones[edit]

Hey Bearcat, I've been updating The R3-30 number-one hits of 2010 and noticed a discrepancy between the dates I use and the dates you used previously at The R3-30 number-one hits of 2009. I've been using Saturdays (the date the podcast is published), and 2009 uses Thursdays (not the date the podcast is published). To add to the confusion, The R3-30 number-one hits of 2008 seems to use Fridays. Do you have any idea what the deal is here?

Also, there seems to be a mysterious Chart 172 (Dec 31 if one goes by Thursdays) that wasn't broadcasted. According to podcast 173 (in which the unbroadcasted top 3 were listed), Chart 172 was two weeks previous (thus one week after 171). I added it to the 2009 list, with the date on Thursday as is the 2009 norm. -M.Nelson (talk) 18:19, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I see you have recently created one or more new stub templates or categories. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals. This helps to reach consensus about whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it is otherwise correctly formatted, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries, where comments are welcome as to any rationale for this stub type. Please, in future, consider proposing new stub types first at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals! Category Musical groups from Kitchener-Waterloo[edit]

Bearcat, Is it possible to rename:

  • Category Musical groups from Kitchener-Waterloo to
  • Category Musical groups from Waterloo Region

The Cambridge band HotKid is from Waterloo Region not part of the "twin cities" of K-W. This namning (Waterloo Region) would be consistent with the other place names under the Ontario category(Peel Region, Durham Region, etc...)

My question is being referred to you from User:Moxy. I was going to rename the category and edit the articles involved as there are currently only eight. I realised that there is more to it and thought it is best to ask first.

  • Thanks

Argolin (talk) 05:01, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have been busy assinging indie bands to their proper Canadian musical groups by location. If there was not a category for a particular city/region place, I put the band in the province category see: [[Category:Musical groups from British Columbia.
The question: is this correct? Will we need new categories? Will we have to rename some (like Waterloo Region)? All of the above? It depends?

Categories[edit]

Bearcat, I have to agree that one band in their own city category doesn't seem like a good thing. It's much better to just have them at the provincial level. Do we need a category for bands that are unknown in terms of place of origin? To-date I have placed them at the provincial level. I have come across one one band article that had Canada. My intent is to clean them up after more of the alphabet is done.

Michel Pagliaro[edit]

Bearcat, I added an infobox for Michel Pagliaro an article created by you 20:14, 23 July 2005. The DOB I entered was 9 November 1948 (1948-11-09) (age 61). Two questions:

  1. Is this incorrect for the infobox as the date format in the article is MMMM DD, YYYY?
  2. I suppose I am seeking your permission to use {dmy} as the date format for the article. The Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers) says to defer to the style used by the first major contributor. I guess it is ok to ask the contributor for a change in the format (no harm in asking)? I suppose you have to add ((dmy}} to the article? As always thanks.Argolin (talk) 04:27, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • ps I guess you created the English wiki from the French article? I've had a peek and theirs is in a sorry state also. In this case, would it not be desirable to use consistent date formats between the French and English wikis?Argolin (talk) 04:27, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat, I think I have an answer to my own question. Even though you created the article, I believe I am the first major contributor. I added an infobox, added a picture, expanded the section on the GG Award, added categories, added the music of Canada portal, put his discography into recommended wiki tables, organised the article's section format, and added appropriate banners to the talk page. Let me know whether this is what is meant by a "major contributor".
Thanks...

Hello, I saw on my watchlist that you recently deleted this article, "(A7: No explanation of the subject's significance (real person, animal, organization, or web content))". Since it was on my watchlist, I had to check why, and it appears this article has been up for AfD twice, both of which closed as no consensus. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wulf Zendik (2nd nomination) (Closed Oct 26, 2009) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wulf Zendik (Closed Mar 11, 2007). (In fact Talk:Wulf_Zendik still exists.) From google cache it looks like the article got whacked down to almost nothing before you deleted it[5], but I recall finding that sources existed in the 2nd AfD (including the Washington Post piece i referred to in the 2nd afd, which was not in the article anymore at the time of deletion oddly). I also recall that some of the edit history was odd, as if some were often angling to trim down the piece (and to be fair, others were adding unsourced stuff). See, e.g., Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive292#Need_another_admin_to_keep_an_eye_on_Zendik_Farm So, based on this history I would think the article should be restored, and renominated for deletion if you believe that's appropriate. Wulf Zendik[edit]

Hi. I noticed that you put a notability tag on the Wulf Zendik article. I have removed it, as it was determined (much to my chagrin) long ago that he meets notability standards. The page was nominated for deletion before, and managed to stay. If you'd like to nominate it for deletion again, by all means, go ahead. Zendik had a cult of followers, and one of them created the page. (If you want a good laugh, take a look at the first version of that page.) But as far as notability goes, whilst quite a nutcase, Zendik was, indeed, a bona-fide published author. All the best-Mk5384 (talk) 17:23, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Album page for Solid State from Pluxus[edit]

The log shows the following: 06:49, 13 February 2010 Bearcat (talk | contribs) deleted "Talk:Solid State (album)" ‎ (G8: Page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page).

The page from the Artist (Pluxus) shows a link for the Album 'Solid State' but the link is to a disambiguation page where no reference of the Album named so is to be found.

Two choice:

1. Although a listing would be good and therefore a page holding them, different from the Artist page, the album is not recognized to have any significance... The page is not recreated. And the link from the Artist page linking to this disambiguation page is removed, so users are not getting redirected to this page.

2. The page is recreated containing the listing and the Artist page is updated consequently.

The Track listing is as follow:

  1. Transient
  2. Perm
  3. Bootstrap
  4. Kinoton
  5. Forth
  6. Contax
  7. Corrose
  8. Sansui
  9. Solid State
  10. Slow Peel

With the first track being of interest as it has been used in the ford fiesta TV advertisement in the uk as seen in this youtube video. from the website of the advertisement company:

"The music is by Pluxus and the track is called “Transient”." Ref: http://www.ogilvy.co.uk/ogilvy-advertising/index.php/2008/09/

The article that I deleted pertained to an album by an artist or band called 12 Moons, who don't have an article and therefore their albums don't qualify for articles either, not to an album by Pluxus. Bearcat (talk) 16:28, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Me[edit]

I don't want to break anything as I'm completely new to wiki stuff, but how can I privately chat with yourself kind sir? I created a page on The Christchurch Sugarlaof and noticed you have helped to categorise my page. I'm proud of the article I have done and want to make it look as professional as possible and still keep the information I have typed up. Thank you so much Primeraboi (talk) 13:53, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You did a very mean thing....[edit]

You deleted the "Following Joe Clayton" article. That was very mean... Please could you explain your thinking ???

Please review your deletion of this article. I had already removed the speedy from it as it had a reasonable claim to notability (from memory the longest serving caddy at the course and having caddied in, from memory, more than 30 Masters). As I'm also fairly sure I put in the edit log Google News also returns hits. He may not meet WP:N but he easily meet the lower standard required to avoid speedy. Dpmuk (talk) 21:34, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I feel this is restored is quite simple - it was not a valid A7. The A7 citerion states that "This is distinct from verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability" and "The criterion does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source". I'd agree that being a golf caddie is not enough to avoid a speedy but a claim to having caddied at that many masters (one of only four golf majors) and being the longest serving caddy there is, in my opinion, a credible claim to significance. As I'm sure you're aware the deletion policy states that when it comes to speedies "If there is a dispute over whether a page meets the criteria, the issue is typically taken to deletion discussions, mentioned below." When a reasonably established editor contests a speedy I can see no reason why an admin should delete on notabality grounds, especially when that editor explains there actions in the edit logs and states that there are reliable sources on the subject. Lack of sources is no reason to delete an article. If you still do not feel that this article should be restored I will have no choice but to take it WP:DRV as an out of process deletion. Dpmuk (talk) 22:13, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Removed comment here as it was added after page was undeleted so is now irrelevant. Dpmuk (talk) 22:58, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for restoring this article. I have now completely re-written it and move it to Carl Jackson (caddie). If nothing else at least this whole episode has given me the kick up the arse I needed to update the article, something I've been intending to do for a while. Dpmuk (talk) 00:22, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And further thanks for catching my accidental removal of category and sort information. I rewrote the article from scratch and forgot to add these back in - probably due to tiredness as it's now rather late in the UK! Dpmuk (talk) 00:25, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of PROD from Mike Bunney[edit]

Hello Bearcat, this is an automated message from SDPatrolBot to inform you the PROD template you added to Mike Bunney has been removed. It was removed by Secrethippo with the following edit summary '(I have sourced it with the Labour PPC website. Surely that's enough evidence. I know the man for goodness sake.)'. Please consider discussing your concerns with Secrethippo before pursuing deletion further yourself. Just a comment that the flickr image which you inserted for Lord Tweedsmuir school here this one will fail flickr review on WikiCommons and be deleted within 1 week since they are licensed as either "All Right Reserved" or with unacceptable "Non-Commercial" or "No-Derivative " use restrictions. Luckily, I was passing by and took 2 photos of this huge school yesterday. I have been taking some other photos of high schools in Surrey as I noted to someone here and I have 1 final one on my list before I will stop permanently. • Please accept my apology. It was King Raven here who added that copyrighted (and illegal) Commons image from flickr without checking the license and then you made some edits to the school article. So, I thought it was you. Best regards from Surrey, BC.
  • PS: I have many good high quality images of native art on my commons account but few people seem to use them. At least I can use my photos of the high schools. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:52, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Settlements[edit]

That was quite a long time ago. As to needing the settlement category depends on which level of government you want to go by. In the NWT the government has designated several different types of community governance. Of these the only one called a settlement is Colville Lake, Northwest Territories however the federal government still says that places like Lutselk'e are settlements. Looking at Category:Settlements in the Northwest Territories I would say never mind retaining the category. There are subcategories for cities, hamlets and towns. All the others are sorted by "Category:Communities in X Region". Just move all those to "Category:Populated places in X Region".

In Nunavut there's one city and the rest are hamlets as recognised by the GNU and the federal government. Except for Bathurst Inlet, Nunavut which the GNU does not define as a community and the feds say is a settlement and had a population of 0 in 2006. There are few people living there but I'm not sure how many. The territorial government does not include Nanasivik and Umingmaktok in their lists but the feds call both settlements. Both of those had 0 in the census but there are a couple of families still living at Umingmaktok. I'd say treat it the same as the NWT and change "Category:Communities in X Region" to "Category:Populated places in X Region". Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 05:57, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just noticed something about Category:Mining communities in Canada. The categories Settlements in AB, BC, NT and NU all contained a sub category Mining communities in. I've added the other 8 (PEI has no mines?) to the settlements in categories. What happens to the category names of the Mining communities in after the parent category is renamed? Advice on external links[edit]

Hi Bearcat, I have been spending alot of time cleaning up external link lists, and recently have been editing Saskatchewan articles where I'm finding a large amount of links that seem to have been added to almost every town article in the province. I don't see any reason for these being included as none are specific to individual communities, but was wondering if you could check out these external links to make sure I'm doing the right thing by removing them. The links seems to be either general search engines or sites dedicated to the province as a whole rather than the community. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The links that are popping up in almost every article are:

Thanks for the advice. I've been cleaning up external link sections for some time now, so I wouldn't remove anything relevant. I only remove news articles if the exact the same article is already referenced. The main reason I wanted advice about those external links was to make sure I was in the right and wouldn't be be called a vandal for removing them.
There are a couple of external sites that I can't find anything about in the policy section, and was wondering about. What's the policy on such external links as weather sites, webcams, etc. I'm finding alot of them in articles and have no clue if they should be there or not. Byte wastage and digi-stalking by template promoter[edit]

Hi Bearcat, I know you and I don't get along sometimes but I know you value contributors and also have a sense of what's wasteful in terms of both energy and byte-space. I took issue with the recent (Feb 11) deletion of {{CGNDB}} and its replacement by {{cite cgn}} and the "game" that took place to get rid of the one so as to force people to use the other, and in my usual vitriolic style I called a spade a spade and gave "them" a piece of my mind (the one who added "this template has been deprecated" to the original, very efficient template created by User:MkToews, who created it at my request and was the only one of us (WP:CAN folks) notified of the TfD, and the one who made the deletion based on the rationale that the original template said it had been deprecated; these are User:Droll and User:Plastikspork, respectively. Plastikspork re-instated the template at my request, though with an unnecessary and kind of insulting "do not use, use cite cgn instead" at its top; I use it anyway and because of the way this was handled refuse to use the other. Since then, User:Droll has gone "on the attack" against {{BCGNIS}} and is substituting {{cite bcgnis}} by the hundreds - eventually thousands of articles - needless adding 5 characters and extra characters in the form of replications of the page title on unique items like Tuya River and Chilcotin River, which exist nowhere else on teh planet; their rationale for doing so is "in case the page title changes" which just ain't gonna happen. Multiplied across thousands of articles, and potentially thousands of archives edits, this amounts to one heck of a lot of storage space. Now, if User:Droll is contributing lots of money to Wikimedia to pay for all the extra server space his pet template, and his unnecessary inclusion of extra name-characters will incur, I suppose that's half-tolerable. But it's clear from his user contributions that he's "going after" articles I created, and not just the {{BCGNIS}} template itself...oh, I should have made taht clear - having foisted {{cite cgn}} on Wikidom in preference to {{CGNDB}} for no good reason, he is now "going after" the {{BCGNIS}} template, also for no good reason at all; perhasps "deprecating" {{gnis}} in favour of {{cite gnis}} is next on his menu. what's particularly galling is that tonight he's gone after articles I've literally just created (e.g. Tuya River - another unique name that doesn't need to have {{cite bcgnis|XXXXXX|Tuya River}} when {{BCGNIS|XXXXXX}} produces the very same result (thoguh the "cite" series also wants- and no longer requires though originally did, the "date accessed" field, which is utterly pointless as these are permanent records and not dated/changeable). You add up the characters yourself, and consider the upshot across thousands of articles and edits....this is utterly pointless, all done and foisted by somebody who has no relationship at all to the content being "tweaked". I've made a complaint to User:Plastikspork (an admin) about this but he seems to be of a common mind with Droll; but what I see going on here is digi-stalking. I've reversed a couple of these byte-wasting, energy-consuming, hostile edits, but he's got AWB on his side and apparently nothing better to do. There's no reason for any of this, just forcing people to learn to do something different becauser a kid who likes to write code wants to push his pet creations on everyone else; but "stalking" my watchlist and new-article creations is really, really noxious. I think you can attest that huge numbers of British Columbia geography articles owe their existence to me, I know t he material, I have an appreciation of the volume of what's out there, and what has yet to be created. A few moments typing extra characters, and filling in extra fields, all to make some code-drone happy, totals hours and hours of extra labour over time, and also waste of Wiki-space. I understand, now, the reason for the anti-disambiguation-of-unique-names debate over cities etc and have made a point of applying that principle in new items, e.g. Teslin Crossing, which doesn't need ", Yukon" added to it as there's no other such place in Canada, or anywhere. the same issue applies here - extra work, and needless character-waste, is something that people who don't actually WRITE articles apparently don't appreciate. I've asked Plastikspork to "rein in" Droll, but failing any action there I'd like to know where to complain about all this....apparently there's a debate about the new series of "cite" templates out there somewhere - Droll referred to this debate but didn't link it - and given my experience in using geo-templates I think I should have a say in whether or not they're useful/improvements (IMO they're not). I also feel I'm being digi-stalked, and that's a serious issue, as well as a waste of time. As I said to Plastikspork, it's coming to the point where useful contributors are leaving Wikipedia because of the waste of time of such nonsensical and work-making code-tweaking and the attack modes of admins and "wiki-lawyers"....I already waste enough time on Wikipedia trying to be a useful contributor; I don't need some non-contributing code freak to waste my time making extra work for no good reason. I know I'm not the most polite of editors, but it's because I have to chew on the craw that gets stuck in my teeth when confronted by stupidity of this kind, and teh quasi-calm and highly kafkaesque rationalizations that are thrown up to defend the useless CFWT behaviour of various admins and code freaks (CFWT - colossal f**king waste of time). Getting pissed off about this has taken me over an hour now.....no doubt Droll is still botting his way through BC and Canadian geography articles, adding extra characters for no good reason except to offend/stalk me - so many of them are in my watchlist I can't help but see this bullshit going down....Skookum1 (talk) 04:42, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to note here that I read this section and feed that the accusations made are not justified. I would be more than glad to engage in a dialog with Skookum1. I am just going about my work without prejudice. –droll [chat] 05:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I DID make an edit to the Wikipedia page about me, but only to correct a spelling error. I have no intention of adding content to my own page, though I could add a few things. If you go back to the page I listed and find it worthy of deletion, then I cannot argue, but if not, or if edits could make it better, please speak on behalf of the page. Help with new category missing place of origin[edit]

Bearcat, would it be acceptable to set up one main category something like Canadian music articles missing place of origin? This would deal with all Canadian music articles (musicians, groups, record labels, record producers, etc...) When I was clearing the backlog of unknown importance and unclassified articles, I found it clumsy trying to remember the name I chose and whether the article was a music group or musician:

My thought is that this new category would be visible and have only one parent:

Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico[edit]

Hi Bearcat. I am the Wikipedian who most actively maintains and adds to the Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico, and am also active in maintaining articles on Category:Puerto Rican writers. I have written many of the articles for both categories and try to monitor them. You eliminated these categories from Erika Lopez. As there is no separate Category:LGBT Puerto Ricans, the Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico is the only way we have to keep track of Puerto Ricans on the island and in the United States who are LGBT. Given the nature of Puerto Rico's political relationship with the U.S., there is huge and constant migration back and forth. Wikipedia's editing guidelines make it hard to account for the specific situation of Puerto Rico, and I have not been successful creating other categories to bring together LGBT Puerto Ricans in the US and PR. Please allow articles such as "Erika Lopez" to appear on Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico and Category:Puerto Rican writers, and revert your 3 June 2010 revision.

I would be happy to write a text for Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico similar to the text we wrote for List of Puerto Rican writers and following the spirit of Puerto Rican literature. You will notice that both of these include Puerto Ricans in the US and in PR, irrespective of their place of birth.--Lawrlafo (talk) 18:24, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have created the category you recommended. Did you delete other LGBT people from Puerto Rico from the category that I can include in the new one? As an aside, I have written on these issues in a book called Queer Ricans: Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora (University of Minnesota Press, 2009) on LGBT people from Puerto Rico, in case that is helpful in any way.--Lawrlafo (talk) 19:42, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, I found your changes.--Lawrlafo (talk) 19:47, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just for information's sake, just wanted to let you know that List of Puerto Ricans also follows a policy of joining diasporic Puerto Ricans with island Puerto Ricans, as we do in List of Puerto Rican writers. This is an editorial decision in trying to account for a population of 4 million Puerto Ricans in the US (most of whom emigrated in the last 50 years) and 4 million in the Caribbean.--Lawrlafo (talk) 02:18, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated 2B (magazine), an article that you created, for deletion. A request for your opinion[edit]

Hi Bearcat,

This is QuietCountry25, formerly known as Fiedorczuk. As an administrator whose conduct I have always found to be balanced and fair, I would like to ask your opinion about whether another administrator is acting in good faith. This began with JzG removing a page I created and which I believe you helped catagorise called The Playing Fields (band) citing a lack of notability. I disagree, but okay I suppose. Next JzG deleted a page I created called Ola's Kool Kitchen (a DJ, Radio DJ and journalist who has interviewed many massive bands.) Both of these pages deleted without any warning fulfilled the criteria for wiki inclusion to my mind:

"Significant coverage"- the sources address the subject in detail. No external research is neccessary.

"Reliable"- sources many published works.

"Sources"- quotes secondary sources from independent press articles.

"Independent of subject"- I am not affiliated with the band or Ola's Kool Kitchen

"Neutral sources"- many, quoted.

But again, notability is subjective, so if I am wrong, so be it, I am willing to let this go.

I was then blocked by JzG, okay, I guess, someone broke a rule on my log in, so JzG marked it as a shared account, but I'm not sure it was also neccessary to block my IP address.

But since then JzG has now deleted a page I created called Radio23 about a growing and independent radio station, an article which I also believe you had something to do with marking as part of WikiProject: Oregon as being an important resource. I forget the exact wording of the tag as I can no longer see the page. This article JzG marked as unambiguous advertising. Firstly, the station is non-profit. Secondly, it has featured and supported a great deal of new music from Oregon as well as global music. Thirdly this is a community resource, for example disabled children are encouraged to be part of broadcasts which supports the entire community. This removal I dispute wholeheartedly.

Now, JzG again, is attempting to delete the only other article I began, which is: Nelson Rand, a published author signed to Maverick House and reknowned South-East Asian correspondent for The Nation and Asia Times amongst others of over a decades standing. Apparently JzG is citing inappropriate tone.

I do not wish for conflict and only ever wanted to contribute to the wikipedia project, adding valid and valuable information. I can accept quite a lot, but when a single administrator not only blocks me and me entire IP address, but then single-handedly removes every article I ever began, I have to feel that this is verging on vindictiveness.

I value any feedback you could offer.

I realise that it is quite likely that JzG will now block this account, so if you could be so kind as to check my talk page if you do not hear from me again, as I may not be able to contact you.

Regards,

Steve QuietCountry25 (talk) 12:25, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I hope you're doing fine (or at least better since I've seen your userbox and hope you are happier now...) and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I've just read your profile and saw that you've worked on articles about Canadian Native unhabitants and you seem to be a sensitive learned person interested in many things and among them minorities and maybe being Canadian helps you understand better than other nationalities what are an endangered language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. You can have more information at[[6]], unfortunately this link is in Catalan but there are pages in English somewhere. I need a little advice[edit]

Hi Bearcat, I'm here to pester you again with a problem that has popped up for me. I have been editing here for awhile now and have always thought that accademic degrees were not listed in post nominal initials in the lead sentence. Any policy I can find seems to confirm this, but a recent edit I made to Donald MacDonald was reverted with the editor telling me on my talk page that I was wrong and that WP:INITIAL supports his claim that these post nominal initials should not be removed. This was after I directed him to WP:CREDENTIAL, which I have always thought was clear on accademic degrees in post nominals, but he claims this is the wrong policy. Can you clear up this confusion for me, because in the past, I have edited many articles citing that policy and now fear that I may have screwed up big time. I did notice in the policy he directed me to, a statement that said "other than accademic degrees", but didn't read anything that supported his claim in that policy. As always, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 01:56, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you make this edit which removed the article from the category for planned or proposed bridges? Is it no longer planned? Is it complete? I'm pretty sure the latter is false as of this morning. Alas, as handy as HotCat is, it lacks for explanatory edit summaries. —EncMstr (talk) 23:43, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Advice/help.[edit]

I have been watching List of gothic rock bands for some time now. It is intended as a companion to the gothic rock article. Unfortunately it is frequently edited to include bands which fall into other genres. These are often from genres associated with gothic rock, or associated with the "goth" subculture, so it's not surprising that this happens, but it is a bit of a pain. Previous attempts to control this have included commenting out the artists, with a notice to tell editors they were not appropriate for the article; and an assertive description of the list's contents at the top, however these did not work. After removing certain artists from the article repeatedly, I thought that perhaps a list of bands that have been established by consensus to be inappropriate would help on the talk page. Unfortunately, while it did make the revert process easier (simpler edit descriptions: see talk), most of the errant additions are from IPs who don't check the talk page. I approached someone on IRC previously about solutions, but since the edits weren't malicious, or constant, it was suggested that semi-prot or the edit page notice were not appropriate. I've given it some time, but the problem remains, so I'm hoping there is an option available other than "keep on fixing it".

  • I believe that semi-prot would nearly eliminate the errant edits, because most are from fly-by IP editors. Admittedly these edits are not malicious, but most are unsourceable as gothic rock, and since the genre is relatively stable, it's relatively unlikely that IPs will be blocked from adding legitimate, sourced bands.
  • I'm not sure if an edit page notice would be effective, but I think it would be worth a try. I believe I was careful to ensure that the wording explaining the list on the talk page clearly says that the issue is open for discussion (we just need a reliable source, etc.) so perhaps it and the list could be refined into an appropriate notice on the edit page. (Though adding to the list would require admin help, I believe?)

Gothic rock is not a popular genre currently, so the list could remain practically static. Considering it is of relatively low importance, the effort spent to maintain its accuracy is rather high in perspective. (There are relatively few watchers, and relatively frequent errant edits.) I would like to know if - BalthCat (talk) 19:10, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oops... that was a remainder from moving something around. So "If... there is an option available other than 'keep on fixing it'". - BalthCat (talk) 07:29, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will propose on the list's talk page that we come up with an editnote to see if that will help. Requiring sourcing is essentially the same tactic as the list on the talk page: "We've found no sources previously, so you need to source it." So it mostly saves time in reversion rather than via prevention. As for AfD, I'm pretty much an inclusionist, I'm really big on WP:PAPER and WP:ATD. So for me, that's not an option. (And besides, categories aren't lists. You could end up with non-band articles in the category, like Gothic rock band politics.) I'm not sure where I stand with the IP thing. I appreciate the desire for "everyone to edit" but perhaps the review system might be appropriate for IPs in general. Thanks for your help! - BalthCat (talk) 23:06, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Simply Saucer requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. freshacconci talktalk 21:16, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough--my bad. By the way, I never thought that Simply Saucer shouldn't have an article. I just didn't have time to write it from scratch. I was just checking out one of the references, saw that the articles were identical, word-for-word, and assumed the copying was done on our end. I should have read it more carefully. Thanks for the explanation. freshacconci talktalk 22:04, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You speedied Brian Peskin as an attack page. I'm puzzled because I did a lot of editing on this article several months ago and from what I recall, and what I can see on Google's cached version of the page, it wasn't like that.

The guy is a snakeoil salesman and the page was original a straight promotion for him but rather than try to get it deleted I decided to create a properly sourced, neutral version which is what I thought I'd done. I think this is a better option than leaving open the possibility that another one of his followers will create a new POV article about him which might slip past the patrollers.

Can you tell me what it was about the page that you felt was an attack?

Orphans[edit]

Hi Bearcat,

You recently recategorised a series of articles and marked many of them with an {{orphan}} tag. I think the orphan tag is probably not appropriate (although the rest of the edits are much appreciated). For example, Platycheirus tarsalis has two meaningful incoming links, which is plenty for a reasonably obscure species. WP:O recommends only adding {{orphan}} to articles with no incoming links at all (true orphans); WP:CANTDEORPHAN says

Given that there's such a huge number of [species articles] and that most of them are 1 or 2 line stubs, it does not help to improve Wikipedia by tagging every single one with an orphan tag. Focus on the ones where there's at least a chance of inter-wikilinking.

Can I recommend ony adding {{orphan}} to species articles with no incoming links? --Stemonitis (talk) 09:44, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I second this. I have seen orphan tags being added (not by you) to species which are listed on the genus page AND a country list. For an obscure species, this is the maximum that could ever be reached.Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:58, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, yes.. maybe there should be a mechanism to exclude species from being tagged as an orphan if there is a link in the genus. Wouldn't know how to do that off course.. Ruigeroeland (talk) 21:57, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't been making a personal judgement call of any sort — AWB adds them automatically. Bearcat (talk) 21:29, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
According to the AWB User Manual, 'Orphan tagging can be limited to articles with 0 incoming links (excluding redirects) from the Tools Menu. There is an option called "Restrict orphan tag addition to linkless pages". [...] It's strongly recommend to activate this feature in en.wiki.' --Stemonitis (talk) 05:23, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Glaciers[edit]

Hi just a question. What are you doing with the categories. All ice streams are glaciers but not all glaciers are ice streams. What definition are you using to recategorise things. Polargeo (talk) 14:20, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All of the ice streams listed on the list of Antarctic ice streams are definitely ice streams. But many of those that are not listed there are also ice streams. This list is not complete. So a recategorisation may be a point of confusion. All of the ice streams listed on list of Antarctic ice streams are also on list of glaciers. I do not think the recategorisation is helpful however when we have two incomplete lists and little chance of ever completing them satisfactorily without original research. It is better to have them all categorised as glaciers and avoid the problem in the category. If you really wish to separately categorise some as ice streams then the glacier category should remain alongside. I hope this clarifies my thoughts. I was just trying to work out what criteria you were using and your reply to me demonstrated the criteria was based on the wikipeida lists. In that case I think it is not useful. Category:Association football clubs 2010–11 season[edit]

I appreciate your effort to help categorize footy club season articles, but a 2010–11 season category already existed a Category:Football (soccer) clubs 2010–11 season. Over the past several months at WP:FOOTY we've been in the process of renaming all of the "football (soccer)" categories to a more appropriate "association football" title. I relize that it's possible that you made the reasonable mistake of not realizing that the 2010–11 category already existed, but I wanted to let you know about it in case you did, in fact, know about it, in which case a category renaming would have been more appropriate. Peve Aire 157[edit]

Hello Bearcat; just dropping you a quick note to request that you take a look at the recent edits of User:Peve Aire 157; who, despite ample warnings on their talk page appears to still be bound and determined to continue to create tiny unreferenced stubs for what they're referring to as "hamlets" found within the boundaries of municipalities in Huron County, Ontario. As you probably know, I have no problem in principle with referenced articles regarding tiny communities (or even ghost towns) but even I draw the line at material like: "Bluevale, Ontario is a village east of Wingham, Ontario, Bluevale has houses and a restaurant. Bluevale is in the county of Morris-Turnberry"; an example of the type of editing pattern this user has been establishing over the past couple of weeks. Thank you for your time. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 15:41, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I'll be keeping an eye on this. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 17:41, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I note that you removed the categorisation from this template. You are of course technically correct to do so, but I would like you to consider the arguments on the talk page. The most detailed discussion is the last one on the page. If the category is removed, please suggest an alternative method for vandalism patrol for these articles. I am not willing to open dozens of tabs for the various subcategories every time I check my watchlist, nor would adding hundreds of articles directly to my watchlist be suitable, since that would not cover newly created articles, nor assist others who may watch the category. In the meantime, I have restored the category.-gadfium 06:31, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temagami[edit]

I am getting a bit annoyed with your deletions that Temagami does not lie in Timiskaming District. The town itself lies in Nipissing District but the region lies in two districts: Nipissing and Timiskaming. It is clear enough that Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park lies in Timiskaming District and the Temagami region. Even further, Maple Mountain in Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park is called "Chee-bay-jing" by the Temagami First Nation. This paper is a good reference for all of this and also icludes the Makobe-Grays River, Obabika River, Solace and Sturgeon River provincial parks. The abanonded Scandia Inn on the eastern shore of James Lake also lies in Timiskaming District but is still part of Temagami. I left a note about this on the talk page of Ishpatina Ridge, as well as references that state Ishpatina lies in Temagami. Please stop pushing your personal preference and point-of-view regarding the Temagami area. Volcanoguy 08:50, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lalemant, Quebec[edit]

I notice that you created the Lalemant, Quebec article. To me it appears that the article meets the WP:AFD criteria for "speedy delete", under A7: No indication of importance. —156.106.216.156 (talk) 11:05, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nanaimo—Alberni#Weird em dash in title[edit]

Bearcat, I need your help, One user is having a dispute on em dashes and en dashes. A user has already move the article title from an em dash to an en dash for a dispute by the username of User:Tony1. Note every Canadian riding has an em dash according to sources from Elections Canada. I already told user:Tony1 it's not weird on the em dash. And User:Tony1 says it is weird. If you want the resolution write to User:Tony1's and go to Nanaimo—Alberni's talk page that is link there. Talk:Nanaimo—Alberni#Weird em dash in title. Steam5 (talk) 01:09, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of article[edit]

Hey Bearcat,

Wondering why you deleted article on alisha pilay? There were citations and I thought I did a pretty good job formatting?

I have nominated More of Our Stupid Noise, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/More of Our Stupid Noise. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Hi folks,

While I know that Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a social networking site, I've read edits from each of you and figure that you might have something to contribute to my RD question Being private verses public?. If you can help, I'd greatly appreciate it, though even your attention here is appreciated as well. Thanks.205.189.194.208 (talk) 22:37, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
