Speedy deletion nomination of Gregory Whitehead[edit]

A tag has been placed on Gregory Whitehead requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Gregory Whitehead[edit]

Linking to a page on amazon.com does not count as a valid, reliable reference that demonstrates notability. The book itself most likely wouldn't survive a notability check if somebody wrote an article about it, and neither would the author — and if the source itself isn't notable, then referencing it can't validly prove the notability of something else.

It's the same criterion by which a mention in The New York Times counts for far more in the notability sweepstakes than a mention in the North Cumberpatch, Montana Pennysaver — if the source itself isn't notable enough, then being mentioned in it doesn't demonstrate notability.

It would be acceptable to use the book as one source among several, if you can provide, say, newspaper articles about him — but it can't be the article's only source if it isn't notable itself. Bearcat (talk) 03:38, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Notability" on Wikipedia is not "this stuff is so good, everyone must hear of him". It's "this has been written about by multiple reliable sources which are independent of the topic". So no, what makes a person notable is not "the work itself" — it's whether or not the person has been the subject of enough coverage that we can verify the accuracy of information that's been added to Wikipedia. It's important and necessary to understand that Wikipedia is not a place where any topic is entitled to have an article — it's an encyclopedia with actual inclusion rules that don't include individual editors' subjective artistic assessments.
