Orphaned fair use image (Image:ContribsRollback.JPG)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:ContribsRollback.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 04:20, 11 May 2007 (UTC) [reply]

VandalProof queue[edit]

Hi AmiDaniel/Betacommand/PS2pcGAMER. There's quite a queue building up for authorisation to use VandalProof. I'm hoping someone's going to be available to go through the list and grant/refuse permission as necessary. Cheers, A bit iffy 11:07, 12 May 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Open Proxies[edit]

Well, I didn't think it was right to ask these questions on the project discussion page, so I'm asking them here. You sound like you do scans and that sort of stuff for a living. I was wondering if you could teach me how to do what you are doing. I would appreciate it greatly. --Cadet hastings 13:46, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lol, no, not for a living (I wish I could make a living out of scanning OPs! :D), but it is knowledge that you generally tend to acquire if you work or study in the field of computer science and networking. I would however be glad to bring you by on the basics of it, and we could definitely use some more volunteers to help with scans. Do you have any knowledge or experience in computer networking? If not, you might read through some of the materials at v:Topic:Networking to start. I'm not sure how much time I'm going to have today and tomorrow, but if you want, you can msg me on irc.freenode.net (I'm typically on as nick "amidaniel") or we can set some other time to go through the basics. Vandal Proof registration[edit]

Hello, I recently registered to use Vandal Proof. No one has done anything about letting new members use your tool, for about a week. Question[edit]

You reverted three bot edits to Ohio County talk pages, including Talk:Ross County, Ohio. I added or updated all 88 county infoboxes, but missed these three "infobox needed" banners. The bot removed the banners as no longer needed, but you reverted this. Did I miss a needed infobox? I removed the banners (infobox needed) again, is that OK? Thanks, Ruhrfisch 02:54, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The bot was not simply removing the templates from the talk pages, but rather moving them from the talk page to the article (an incorrect behavior which I was reverting). If a page does not need an Infoboxneeded template on its talk page, please remove it. These reverts were done blindly and en masse, so please feel free to use your judgment and undo any reversions you feel were incorrect. AmiDaniel (talk) 05:56, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxneeded?[edit]

Why should this template be deleted? It makes no sense. Timneu22 16:29, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really support its deletion. It was deleted by Cyde after a bot went mad with it, and I reversed his deletion. Thinking it better that there be some discussion on the matter, I took it to TfD. See the logs. AmiDaniel (talk) 20:47, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note of thanks. I worry that despite the best intentions, we end up all-too-willing to "pull the trigger" and delete what could be improved or should be discussed in the interest of consensus. Cyde is clearly well-intentioned, however, to be sure. --Ssbohio 18:47, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not that I'm particularly bothered either way, but I'd suggest it's entirely appropriate for Betacommand to decide whether I was suitable for it given his recent desysopping for poor judgement and due to the fact he showed appalling judgement in a recent dispute involving me, see Talk:Gerry Adams for more details. VP[edit]

You may or may not remember me, but I was a previous user of the best vandalfighting tool to ever be released. Around last November, I inexplicably left Wikipedia. Both times I've tried to return only to find said tool to be down/broken/disabled. What's going on, and will this ever be restored to it's former glory?

Nice to be back. ‹('.'‹)Kribbeh(›'.')› 16:09, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We'll see if I find some time to fix and get the bot hosted. Unfortunately my time has been occupied with RL and other wiki projects, so I've not been able to get around to it. Sorry for the inconvenience. AmiDaniel (talk) 00:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal Proof[edit]

Hello,

I recently downloaded Vandal Proof as an alternative to the ever-tedious manual reverting of vandal edits. For some reason, it says:

The username you are trying to connect with is not approved for VandalProof.

Do you have any ideas why I would be receiving this error message?

Thank you,

I moved the article into the main namespace, but then going back through the history, I found you were the one who'd moved it to the project space. Could you explain why this was? A piece of copyrighted software doesn't seem to belong in the project namespace.

As well, do you think it satisfies WP:NOTE (or could, at any rate)? Blast [improve me] 15.05.07 2009 (UTC)

It seems most definitely clear to me that the software is by no means notable. Would anyone other than those who have visited this page or its website have ever heard of it? Can you find verifiable sources who comment on the software (i.e., an article in a major publication about the software)? I think the answer is most certainly no, but if you debate this, please let me know. Additionally, the "article" is incredibly brief, providing no useful content whatsoever. It seems quite clear to me that this is nothing more than a Wikipedia tool and would be considerably better served in the project namespace, as is typically the case with all wiki tools. If you take issue with sending it to the project namespace, then the only other option would be to /dev/null. AmiDaniel (talk) 00:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a vested interest in keeping the article (it seems non-notable to me, as well); I just wanted to ask if you felt the same. However, as I mentioned above, it doesn't seem quite right that a copyrighted piece of software be in the project namespace (related to a project released under the GFDL). I'm not sure what the rules are for inclusion in that, but it certainly seems at any rate to require a release of copyright of some sort (GFDL, CC, etc.). Blast [improve me] 17.05.07 1238 (UTC)
I don't see why discussing copyrighted software would somehow require some sort of release any more than it would if it were in mainspace. Image is a problem, but I don't see why we need the image at all. JoshuaZ 14:20, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That WP:TOOLS need to be free is simply not the case, Blast_san. For example, we include 1-click-answers in the WP:TOOLS page, it is copywrited. I do not see how mergeing Wikipedia Widget with WP:TOOLS would be an issue. ffm ✎talk 15:53, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof Application Denial[edit]

Could you please give me a more exact reason for denying my application? The application page itself states that "In most circumstances, [...] users with fewer than 250 mainspace edits [...] will generally not be accepted." I do realize the concise meaning of that; however, it lets on to the possibility that one could be accepted without 250 mainspace edits. While I'm attempting to contest your decision (as you are the final arbiter of this, seeing how you created it), I would like to emphasize to you that all of my edits and participation in Wikipedia have been benign and that I'm attempting to slowly "work myself up" the ranks to become more helpful in the community. Obviously, if denied most tools that aid me (from what I've seen, all Windows anti-vandal tools are authorization-only), I'll never be able to do so. If you still believe my denial is warranted, could you at least point me in the direction of some ways to fight more vandalism besides what I'm doing now (happening upon random pages and seeing if something can be corrected)? Additionally, I advise (although in no way am I trying to be offensive) that you change your VP application page to more accurately reflect your acceptance process, as per the reason you left me on my talk page (that 250 mainspace edits is strictly required). --LoganK 20:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use WP:LAVT, WP:TWINKLE, WP:IRC, and WP:RC. ffm ✎talk 20:53, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I'd like to point out that you can vandal fight just fine without any tools; for example, I've never used any (I'm approved for VP, but as a Mac user, I can't actually use it). A shiny program just makes it easier to screw up; having a solid knowledge of the policies themselves is much better than an automated tool. EVula // talk // // 21:00, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VP[edit]

Why did you erase my VP status? I was using it correctly. Respond on my talk plz. Wikiman53 t a 01:23, 21 May 2007 (UTC) Recopied from Daniel's talk page.'[reply]

a) I removed you, after discussion with at least two other moderators, after a (confidential) complaint was made. Upon review of your recent edits, particularily those to your talk page using {{helpme}}, it was resolved that you have shown a distinct lack of knowledge, and the moderator group has decided to remove your access as a protection measure (like how we decline new nominations for very similar situations).
b) I, as noted in my header, post my messages here, and here only - "Please note that if I respond to your message, it will always be placed here; it may be duplicated on your talk page depending on the urgency and importance". I do not consider your message to be of paramount importance or urgency. Daniel 06:21, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, if you really want to know...

  • Firstly, the block, which was totally appropriate. This would have been enough to remove access anyways, but then your immaturity and lack of knowledge became apparent.
  • User talk:WikiMan53, 21:02, May 13, 2007 (UTC) — asking what the personal attack templates are casts great shadows over whether you know how to use the test templates correctly, a pivotal function of VP.
  • YMMV, 21:15, May 13, 2007 (UTC) — again...
  • User talk:WikiMan53, 15:19, May 19, 2007 (UTC) — asking how to, of all things, edit an RfA, more lack of inexperience and knowledge.
  • Stéphane Rousseau, 20:38, May 19, 2007 (UTC) — most certainly not a candidate, shows a distinct lack of knowledge about Wikipedia.
  • User talk:WikiMan53, 23:51, May 20, 2007 (UTC) — asking how to use CSD templates, continues the distinct pattern of inexperience with Wikipedia.

You demonstrated, between the block and the above (the list is, by the way, not comprehensive - it's only a small selection), that you a) are inexperienced with Wikipedia; b) have poor decision-making; and c) are erratic. Put together, and after consulting with a number of moderators (including the one who originally approved you), and conferring to the confidential complaint about you, I decided that, to protect the project and the reputation of VandalProof, I should remove your access to the powerful tool. This is done using the authority given to me by Daniel Cannon, owner and operator of the application, and with the support of a number of moderators. Daniel 07:13, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I knew what personal attack templates were. I was wondering the CODES!
*I know how to edit a rfa I was wondering if you could WITHOUT a comment.
I know for example {{db-bio}} but didnt know how to say csd7 as an example. I also believe you should have TOLD ME that you did this. Personally, I think it was very rude of you guys. Also all my VP edita are relievent. But if you don't want me to, I won't help revert vandals faster. Wikiman53 t a 22:05, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GeSHi update[edit]

You seem like an admin interested in GeSHi. You might like to bookmark User:Quuxplusone/monobook.css for future copying (in whole or in part) into MediaWiki:Geshi.css. I'm updating my monobook.css irregularly, but for some languages, like C, Python, and C++, someone's going to have to redo the corresponding PHP files. I'll try to attract someone's attention if I get around to doing one. --Quuxplusone 08:05, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll attempt to get done with the css what I can tomorrow. I'm also finding quite a few bugs with the GeSHI hilighting (in addition to the one you already reported on the talk page), and I'm going to do my best to try to fix them / get them fixed within the next week. AmiDaniel (talk) 10:17, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Check out this corrected version of "c.php". I can't test it on my own, so there are probably a few missing commas and things, but once the typos are fixed it should be a huge improvement. I'll work on the "Geshi.css" colors for it tomorrow. --Quuxplusone 08:43, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AmiDaniel. You changed my block on this IP from 31 hours to indefinite. It was used for two and a half minutes and is extremely likely to be dynamic. Please reconsider changing this block to a reasonable length. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:25, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to the documentation provided by the ISP, WideOpenWest LLC, all of their Internet packages provide static IP allocation--as such, I think it is actually quite unlikely that this IP is dynamic. If you can find it to be otherwise, I'll gladly reverse the block; however, in cases of death threats, I feel it absolutely imperative that the user making them be denied access to edit indefinitely. We've lost many good contributors as a result of death threats, and I don't see any reason to take them lightly. If you disagree, please, by all means, take it to WP:ANI. AmiDaniel (talk) 05:01, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't disagree with the seriousness, it's the effectiveness. It's also likely it's not the only IP available to the editor, so it should probably be hard blocked instead if they are to be prevented from editing from it. I would tender a period of years, when you set the hard block. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:52, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your VandalProof Application[edit]

Thank you for your interest in VandalProof, Metta Bubble. As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that you have a 3RR block only a month ago, as well as other factors which indicate you may not be able to deal with vandals who confront you effectively.

Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again soon. Thank again for your interest in VandalProof. Daniel 07:07, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flagged Revisions[edit]

Flagged Revisions has been losing popularity (not people not liking it, but not a lot of people discussing it). What has been happening on the developer side (are they going to implement it?, etc.) Thanks, --(Review Me) R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 01:40, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Development is still most definitely continuing (you can see the latest changes to it here), and so far as I'm aware we are still planning on installing it on Wikipedia--when exactly this is going to happen, I'm not sure. In any case, the extension is rapidly approaching stability, and I personally believe it satisfactory for deployment in its current state. If I had to give an ETA, I would guess around one to two months, but I cannot say that for sure. AmiDaniel (talk) 17:44, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for expedition of checkuser request[edit]

Sounds like circular logic or something, doesn't it (a request to expedite a request?)? Anyhow, someone (User:Antandrus) advised I contact a clerk to see why this checkuser request hasn't been acted on yet. (They said it was in a place where nobody would see it.) Problems with VandalProof[edit]

Firstly, I want to thank you for approving me to use VandalProof. Unfortunately, I have yet to actually use VandalProof. When I open the executable, my username automatically comes up, but when I click to verify authorization, nothing ever happens. I know it says to wait a few moments, I waited a few hours, and still nothing. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Ganfon 13:52, 10 July 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:VP TabbedLook.JPG)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:VP TabbedLook.JPG. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 21:55, 10 July 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Issues with Vandalproof[edit]

Hi, there :) I was recently approved for VP and am having some troubles with it. When I patrol recent changes, it just gets the newest recent changes, and none of them are actually sorted out as vandalism. So, there is no way for me to revert anything simply because there is nothing in the recent changes pane to revert. I've played around with the RC preferences, but still can't seem to find the solution. On a smaller note, I keep getting messages about script errors every time I go to a new page. Hope you can help, Arky ¡Hablar Conmigo! 00:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC) [reply]

VandalProof issues[edit]

Hello Daniel, I am having some issues with VP. I have been approved to use VP, and have installed the program per the directions on the VP page, but when I attempt to use the application while logged in in IE7, it says "No privileges found" in the box, and when I click on "Verify authorization" it does nothing. I have re-installed the program, but it was still messed up. Is there anything you can do to help? Thanks so much and you do great work, Neranei T/C 03:16, 28 July 2007 (UTC) [reply]

FlaggedRevs Extension[edit]

Hi,

I've been looking at your demonstration of the Wikipedia:Flagged revisions extension. This looks a very interesting proposal. (Is it still a proposal?) May I be really cheeky and question the wording of the 'information banner', for want of a better term?

It currently says:

This is the latest quality revision, approved on 15 August 2007. The current one can be modified; 12 revisions await review. (details)'.

The current what I ask? The current revision/The current 'quality' revision (obviously not but ambiguous none-the-less). How would "the current version" sound? Another 'revision' isn't called for, but version might sound better than 'one'.

Also what would happen if the 'current' version was not automatically shown to the proven editors (unless there is no recorded quality revision)? In this way any proven editor who is just browsing/researching - believe it or not, it still happens - will still be sure of a non-vandalised version and would also be prompted to approve the recent edits (removing any backlog situation, and confirming any genuine edits that may not be displayed (to Joe Public) for a length of time.

I guess that is a question for the talk page, I'll post there as well.

Regardless, I like.

Best wishes, –MDCollins (talk) 23:20, 15 August 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Help regarding the creation of thumbnail images[edit]

Hi,

I installed imagemagick on my wiki server for getting thumbnailing feature to work.I also made the follwowing changes to the loaclsettings.php file. But still iam getting this error "Warning: exec() [function.exec ]: Unable to fork [""C:\Program Files\ImageMagick-6.3.5-Q16\convert" -quality 80 -background white -size 180 "E:\Wiki\mediawiki-1.7.1/images/e/e4/EagletonTripPic2.JPG" -coalesce -resize "180x135!" -depth 8 "E:\Wiki\mediawiki- 1.7.1/images/thumb/e/e4/EagletonTripPic2.JPG/180px-EagletonTripPic2.JPG" 2>&1"] in E:\Wiki\mediawiki-1.7.1\includes\GlobalFunctions.php on line 1719" The modifications i did are

$wgEnableUploads = true; $wgUseImageResize = true; $wgUseImageMagick = true; $wgImageMagickConvertCommand = "/usr/bin/convert";

Kindly respond ASAP

Regards,

Priya.N —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Prinav (talkcontribs) 08:28, August 23, 2007 (UTC).

Well, for starters it would appear that you are running this off a windows box, rather than a unix box -- as such, convert isn't going to be located at "/usr/bin/convert". You need to set $wgImageMagickConvertCommand to wherever ImageMagick is installed .. on Windows, I believe this is "C:\Program Files\ImageMagick\convert.exe" but please check first. AmiDaniel (talk) 21:28, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I checked the path and changed the path. But still it isnt working. Here are the modifications i did.

$wgImageMagickConvertCommand = "C:\Imagemagick\ImageMagick-6.3.5-6-Q16\convert.exe"; $wgImageMagickIdentifyCommand = "C:\Imagemagick\ImageMagick-6.3.5-6-Q16\identify.exe";

Also i altered the privilages for the C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe to (R/E) C:\Imagemagick\images to (R/W/E) C:\MediaWiki1.7.1\images to (R/W/E)

But still it isnt working.Am really puzzled what is wrong. Kindly help me out.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:VP newlook3.PNG)[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:VP newlook3.PNG. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 21:08, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Foundation images .. other image nonsense[edit]

The use of images containing foundation logos, while they are indeed copyrighted, is permissible in userspace, even while other non-free images are not. It would indeed be quite absurd to suppose that a website's use of its own logo could violate its copyright on that logo. Each of the many, many times this issue has been raised, the consensus of the board and of Wikipedia has been that use of WMF-copyrighted logos in userspace is appropriate. Additionally, screenshots of a tool for Wikimedia, be the tool released under a free license or not, for the purpose of illustrating the software in question on its appropriate project page or discussion page are permissible on those pages by simple common sense. While the screenshots were mis-tagged, I should think it a far better use of your time to retag them or contact me to ask for an explanation of copyright than to go spam me with three redundant templates and mark the images for deletion. Tagging is a job for a bot, not a person. AmiDaniel (talk) 05:50, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If Wikimedia logos, which violate no copyright, are permitted, then why would Mozilla logos (like the Firefox logo), which also violate no copyright, be prohibited? This makes no sense.
Aside from the Wikipedia logo issue, which I am not pressing, screenshots of non-free software are typically non-free. I looked at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof#License and found that VandalProof is not under a free license, and therefore screenshots of it would also be non-free. However, since you have clarified that you have released copyright over the user interface elements present in the two screenshots, there is no longer a problem. So, thank you for clarifying! —Remember the dot (talk) 18:44, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
