Roxy Hotel Deletion

Hi

Can you advise why you flagged the Roxy Hotel page for deletion? The hotel is notable and has high authority mentions. It is the new name of the Tribeca Grand, which is currently listed in Wikipedia along with its sister company Soho Grand.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tonyeny (talkcontribs) 19:55, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

@Tonyeny: I'm not actually trying to delete it, it just looks that way. The Tribeca Grand and Roxy articles were almost identical, and since the Tribeca is changing its name to the Roxy, it makes more sense to move the Tribeca article to "The Roxy Hotel" and add information about the name change (and, after the move, anyone going to the Tribeca Grand article would be redirected to the Roxy article). In order to move it, the Roxy article first has to be deleted to make the name available. Once it is deleted, the Tribeca Grand article can be moved into its place. --Ahecht (TALK

@Elisfkc:I took a quick look for one, but I don't think Disney has made a vector version public, and all I could find were look-alikes that weren't quite the right shape. A real PNG is preferable to a JPEG rendered pixel-by-pixel as a vector image. --Ahecht (TALK

Errors transcluding the "Show by" template

Hi. Template:Show by/testcases and Template:Show by/doc are both showing parser-function errors when the main template is transcluded, but the sandbox seems to work fine. Wbm1058 (talk) 03:10, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

IRC names

I've been told that you're the one who manages the IRC Redirect tool on Labs — the one that's used to generate random usernames for #-en-help. Would it be possible to modify that somewhat? Specifically, it would be a lot more useful if it didn't generate more than one username with a given color at a time (for instance, we just had an incident on there where PurpleYew and PurpleKiwi both got confused because of the similarity of their usernames). Perhaps if you increased the range of colors that the script uses? DS (talk) 18:59, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

@DragonflySixtyseven: Currently, the script is just a "dumb" php script, so it has no way of knowing who is on the channel or storing data or keeping track of what names have been assigned recently. Currently, the script uses the following colors, which were chosen based on being commonly known and free of negative connotations (specifically, there were concerns with black, pink, violet, and blue): "Brown", "Cyan", "Green", "Magenta", "Orange", "Purple", "Red", "White", "Yellow". It might be possible to have the script assign colors sequentially, instead of randomly, but I'd need to do a little research on how to implement that on toollabs.
Otherwise, I could think of a few more colors to add, such as "Beige" and "Grey", but ultimately the reason there is both an animal/fruit AND a color is to increase the number of possible names. If one part of the name matching causes confusion, we might as well just eliminate the color altogether and just use the animal/fruit. This would mean reducing the number of possible combinations from 234 to 26, which may be a more serious issue, but I haven't spent enough time on the IRC channel to know if it'd be worse. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 20:57, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
@DragonflySixtyseven: For now, I figured out how to assign colors sequentially, so you at least shouldn't get two of the same color in a row. Let me know if you think there's consensus to remove the color altogether. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 04:29, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
Oh, keep the color, and add "Beige" -- and "Spotted", "Striped", "Gold", "Silver", "Bronze", "Topaz", "Turquoise", "Obsidian", "Emerald", "Jade", "Carnelian","Indigo", "Ruby", "Crimson", "Scarlet", "Sepia", and "Maroon". DS (talk) 14:20, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
@DragonflySixtyseven: Okay, I'll take a look at implementing that tonight. Those are good suggestions, although I'd like to keep just one color starting with each letter to avoid confusion. The list I have been thinking about was "Amber", "Brown", "Cyan", "Emerald", "Fuchsia", "Green", "Indigo", "Jade", "Khaki", "Lime", "Magenta", "Navy", "Orange", "Purple", "Red", "Silver", "Tan", "Umber", "White", "Yellow". --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 15:36, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
"Fuchsia" would be problematic because of other words that start with 'fuc'; perhaps "freckled"? DS (talk) 15:40, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
@DragonflySixtyseven: I see how that could be a problem. "Freckled" wouldn't really work because, in order to keep the names under 16 characters, I have to limit each word to seven letters (7+7+2=16), plus I'd like to stick to colors. I'll think about other alternatives, since having 20 names makes the math a little easier than if there were 19. --Ahecht (TALK

It looks like their press releases switched from the diagonal box to that logo in mid-February, but they still have the diagonal box logo on the Staples.com website. IMAX resolution

Thanks for your insight. I've come across quite a few articles now where IMAX has stated that a single IMAX frame can contain up to 18k resolution. Presently in the article is this source, in which an IMAX expert implies that 18k can be projected (and in turn, captured), though he/she admits the "viewer" may only be able to see 12k worth of resolution. In two press releases from IMAX (here and here), it is clearly stated, "An IMAX frame has upwards of 18K pixels of horizontal resolution" and "with its 12 x 18K resolution". Now perhaps you're correct that only 12k is usually captured, but I have yet to find a source that explicitly states that. Would you mind sharing if you know of one? Thanks in advance. --GoneIn60 (talk) 23:41, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

@GoneIn60: I wasn't aware that IMAX was actually advertising 18K now. I've heard IMAX representatives speak at several venues and claim that combination of the camera's optical system and the film process itself limits the captured resolution to 12K, and the only debate was on how much that degraded by the time you copied the film to a release print (one source, a republished letter from a Senior VP at IMAX that you removed from the article, put this at about 4.5K vertical resolution, which translates to 6.2K horizontal resolution, and there was a demonstration done, as described in this interview with John Galt, a Senior VP at Panavision, where the MTF of projected IMAX film dropped to zero when they tried to project a 4Kx4K test pattern, meaning that the vertical resolution, which was limiting in that case, is actually less than 4K). There are lots of sources out there that use a 12K number for IMAX (such as http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2016-01/07/guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-shot-in-8k ), but most of the sources are in journals that I used to have free access to through a school library, but I can no longer get. One of the ones I could find through Google Book was Cinefantastique, Volume 28 (1996), on page 51, which says "the screen itself has 12,000 resolution points across its width, whereas a television only has 525."
Awesome, thanks for the info. Read the John Galt interview, which had a lot of good information in general outside of the IMAX discussion. I'll check out the others when I have time. And by the way if it wasn't already evident, I'm not challenging the 12K claim; just looking to learn a bit more about the technology. If anyone has an issue with it down the road, I'm sure we can address it on the article's talk page if needed. Thanks again! --GoneIn60 (talk) 01:06, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

That's an interesting addition you made for the attraction infobox. My one comment is that I think it's obvious that rides with FastPass+ only have it at WDW, since that's the only place with FastPass+. Also, you should join Wikipedia:WikiProject Amusement Parks. Elisfkc (talk) 01:01, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

@Elisfkc: The problem is that when the template was originally made, rides at Disneyland that had fastpass almost always had it at Walt Disney World as well (the major exceptions being the Jungle Cruise and Autopia). Now that Fastpass+ has drastically increased the number of fastpass rides at WDW, it doesn't make sense for these to be general parameters. I made the edit to Soarin' because the template had the awkward wording of "Fastpass available at Disney's California Adventure" and "Fastpass+ available at Epcot", which didn't make sense when park-specific sections were available. I agree that perhaps we need a shared icon for FP/FP+ for rides that have some sort of fastpass available at all locations. --Ahecht (TALK

I don't know about a shared logo. They are two different systems. Elisfkc (talk) 01:30, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
@Elisfkc: It would be a logo that incorporated both, such as .
Also, a piece of advice: If you are using Inkscape to make SVG files, save them as "Optimized SVG (*.svg)", and when it pops up the "Optimized SVG Output" dialogue box, uncheck "embed rasters". On the fastpass+ logo that you uploaded, this would bring the file size from 2096KB down to just 12KB. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 02:21, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Ok, I'll try and remember that for Inkscape. I don't think it's really necessary to have a logo that covers both, since they will be at two separate locations, and other than name and owner, the systems are extremely different. Elisfkc (talk) 02:49, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Also, I'm not sure which is better to use on most pages, File:Fastpass+ Logo.svg or File:Fastpass+ Logo.png. I put File:Fastpass+ Logo.png on most pages since I uploaded it first, and more importantly, it's monochromatic like the other logos used on the infoboxes for attractions. Elisfkc (talk) 02:55, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
@Elisfkc: Does Disney ever use a monochromatic logo? If not, since it's their trademark, we should probably use one of the versions with the green +, either or .
If that being the only color logo is a problem, we can start using as well. --Ahecht (TALK

I'm not talking about Disney's logos, I'm talking about the logos used for Attraction Infobox, logos like . In fact, Fastpass+ is the only thing that uses the official icon. That's because I was the one who added it, and it doesn't make sense for anything else right now. Elisfkc (talk) 22:30, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Reversion of MS Grandeur of the Seas - Why?

I have been cleaning up the Wikipedia Maritime Incidents by Year navboxes and creatuing new ones in support of the Shipwrecks Project, which covers both shipwrecks and lesser incidents at sea, like fires, hiackings, and groundings. I added Grandeur of the Seas to the 2013 navbox under "Other incidents" (i.e., other than shipwrecks) because of her 2013 fire and added the navbox to the bottom of the article. You removed the navbox, claiming the edit was not constructive. I do not understand your reasoning. Why is it not constructive to include the navbox for maritime incidents in 2013 at the bottom of the article on a ship that had an incident in 2013? And why would Grandeur of the Seas be treated differently from other ships that had incidents tha year? Mdnavman (talk) 00:00, 2 May 2016 (UTC)mdnavman

You put the "2000 shipwrecks" navbox there, not 2013. I'd have no problem with the 2013 template being used on that page in regards to the fire. The incident in 2000 was a few hours without power, which was resolved without further incident. The other ships in that template were either bombed or hit with a torpedo, which seems to be an entirely different category of incident. --Ahecht (TALK

RE: Staples logo

Per our previous discussion, the new annual report for 2015 is out and can be found here:

http://nasdaqomx.mobular.net/nasdaqomx/7/3511/5010/

Also, I can send you the vector logo if you need it

RE: Staples logo Hi there,

I saw you made an edit to the Staples logo recently (3/7/16) doing a color correction.

Just want to let you know the company has a new logo now, which can be found here:

http://staples.newshq.businesswire.com/sites/staples.newshq.businesswire.com/files/logo/image/StaplesLogo.JPG — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markcautela (talk • contribs) 14:41, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

@Markcautela: Is that really a new logo, or just a variant? It looks like their press releases switched from the diagonal box to that logo in mid-February, but they still have the diagonal box logo on the Staples.com website. The next Staples Annual report should come out in a few weeks (it's typically mid-April), so we can see what logo they use on that. The annual report has the advantage of being in PDF format, so we can extract a vector version of their logo. --Ahecht (TALK PAGE) 14:50, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi again, Thanks for getting back to me! Staples.com now has this new logo and yes, it will be used in the annual report coming out soon. Hope that helps. -Mark @Markcautela: Great. Once an SVG version is available, I'll update the file here. --Ahecht (TALK PAGE) 15:57, 5 April 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markcautela (talkcontribs)

Thx! Just curious, on the main page, it looks like the logo is still the old one, but when you click on it, it shows as the new one. Will it change on the main page too? It probably just needs a day or two to rectify itself right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markcautela (talkcontribs) 13:50, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

@Markcautela: Sometimes the old image is cached and won't be replaced automatically. The new logo should show up if you refresh the page. If not, send me the link to the page showing the old logo and I can try to figure out what's going on. --Ahecht (TALK

Seems okay for the logo.

Disambiguation link notification for May 26

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited MS Harmony of the Seas, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Flow Rider. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

New deal for page patrollers

Hi Ahecht,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Ahecht,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

New page reviewer granted

Hello Ahecht. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as mark pages as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. MusikAnimal talk 19:22, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Ahecht. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

@2600:1012:B06A:248A:A0AA:8E5F:25C3:7BCD: Thanks. Unfortunately, Wikipedia's policy on verifyability is that only information that has been published in "reliable sources" (newspapers, magazines, books, press releases, etc.) can be used in Wikipedia articles. --Ahecht (TALK

The cherry b was sunk by HMS Spartan not sceptre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.55.52.151 (talk) 17:01, 8 December 2016‎ (UTC)

@31.55.52.151: I assume you're talking about the HMS Charybdis (F75). I couldn't find a good source that says it was either the Spartan or the Sceptre. I did find a page at http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1060024214 which indicates that the HMS Active and another unidentified ship fired missiles at the Cherry B during the sinking exercise, so there were likely multiple ships involved. Do you have a source that says it was the Sceptre? --Ahecht (TALK

Proposed deletion of Nuclear Organization

The article Nuclear Organization has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Capitals in title misleadingly imply that Nuclear Organization is an institution (MOS:INSTITUTIONS) - a hatnote on Nuclear organization might be more appropriate.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. mike neider BL'AST!

Someone has deleted the mike neider page. Whom ever did so needs to re post the pagfe as they clearly have no clue who their talking about. Especially...5.Has released two or more albums on a major record label or on one of the more important indie labels (i.e., an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are independently notable).

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Ahecht,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 819 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.
