Comments requested on this article (Bladderworts) that I was asked to write by the chap who began most of the carnivorous plants articles. I did make an effort: a poor librarian in Bristol was practically bent double under the pile of books I requested from the basement. After I couldn't find suitable public domain photos I waded into numerous ponds in search of samples, and I even sketched a couple of diagrams myself where the article seemed to warrant them. For those not intimately aquainted with literature on carnivorous plants, please take my word for it that references 1, 2, 4, and 5 are the acknowledged leading authorities on this subject. Genuine advice sought on how to make this an FA, if the subject is of sufficient intrinsic interest to get it there. I've an idea it needs more, but I've reached the limit of what value I can add without outside suggestions. Sarracenia are considered easy to grow and are widely propagated and cultivated by gardeners and carnivorous plant enthusiasts. Several hybrids between the very hardy S. purpurea and showy varieties like S. leucophylla are becoming common in garden centres in the U.S. and Europe.

Sarracenia flowers will not self-pollinate; an external pollinator is required. Pollen can be collected manually by lifting or moving aside a petal and gathering it from the floor of the umbrella-shaped style, whereupon it can be transferred to the stigmas of the same flower, or to those of another plant. The stigmas are visible as small knobs immediately inside each of the five points of the style.

The pollen can be wrapped and stored in the refrigerator for a few weeks if necessary, and can then be used to pollinate later-flowering species: all Sarracenia produce fertile hybrids with all other species of the genus, and hybrids can be further hybridized to produce a limitless number of variants.

Fertilized flowers will shed their petals and swell to produce a seed pod, which will dry and split in Autumn. Several hundred seeds can be released by a single flower.

The seeds store well if kept dry. They require a stratification period of several weeks of cold, damp conditions prior to germination. Growers who live in temperate climates similar to the plants' natural conditions can sow seed outside in Autumn; alternatively, it can be prepared for germination by a few weeks in a refrigerator.

The seeds will germinate when sown on the surface of their substrate and transferred to warmer, bright conditions. All Sarracenia seedlings look alike for the first two or three years, and so growers take care to label their seed and pots. The plants reach maturity after four or five years.

Propagation by division

Sarracenia divide very easily. Over the course of a few growing seasons, their rhizomes will branch and produce new crowns of pitchers naturally, and the rhizome can be divided and separated between crowns with a sharp knife during the plant's winter dormancy or early in the growing season. Seemingly inert green buds on empty lengths of rhizome can frequently be induced to develop into new crowns by dividing the rhizome to separate them from existing crowns. Lengths of rhizome without any crowns can often be induced to produce them by cutting small notches up to 5 mm deep in the top of the rhizome with a sharp knife. A new crown may develop at the site of the notch.
