Giant Sequoia[edit]
Hi Eoghanacht - I'm very doubtful about the statements "Loose ground ash may also act as a cover to protect the seeds from ultraviolet radiation damage" and "Some research indicates that many cones need to be partially dried by beetle holes before fire can fully open them"; the former seems very improbable as ash would if anything reflect UV off the ground back onto the foliage; the second, the cones open readily without insect damage provided the branch it is on dies, i.e., is no longer supplying water to the cone. The beetles aid cone opening by cutting the vascular supply from the tree on live branches, thereby allowing the cones to dry as if the branch were fire-killed. On uses, there is some renewed interest in GS as a high volume timber producer in plantations, as the wood from young trees is stronger and less brittle; some tests I read of showed it is comparable in quality with Coast Redwood - MPF 18:20, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks; that sounds reasonable that cones too high in the crown wouldn't get enough heat from a ground fire. The 50% beetle-attacked surprises me, I collected a bagful of cones at Calaveras, and inspected the cones carefully for insect damage (so as not to introduce the beetle to Britain!) but couldn't find any, nor did I get any beetles emerging later either (the cones still opened well of course!).
- There's several small trial plantations of GS in Britain and a few elsewhere in Europe, I'll see if I can find the recent details about its potential timber value (unfortunately I can't remember where I read it just now!). - MPF 00:28, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Good stuff; I'll add few odds'n'ends on Giant Sequoia. Nice start on Georgia oak; it has a few things to change but nothing major (it has a zoological style rather than botanical style author citation, and like all science subjects, the primary measures should be metric not imperial). Palla[edit]
IIRC, "palla" was a synonym for "impala" mentioned by the 1911 Britannica, now orphaned because of clearing of the missing topics list. Using Gutenberg author template[edit]

Personally, I would prefer to change the gutenberg author template to have "Works by" as part of the link. I used a form similar to this for many of the links I have added. It seems more appropriate because, when you think about it, it is not a link to "H.G. Wells", but a link to "Works by H.G. Wells" I had thought of looking into changing this, but have not got around to it yet.
Also, on a diverging topic, I am not really quite satisfied with template:gutenberg. First of all, emphasizing the word "Free" reminds me of bad advertising. Anyone familiar with Project Gutenberg will know that PG texts are distributed freely, and anyone not familiar will find that out very easily if they have any interest, without needing the word "Free" to entice them.
Secondly, this template works just fine when used just once in an article, but for my tastes, it gets rather overly-wordy when used in a longer list. See Barsoom series or David Hume for examples. I understand that it takes extra time for the wikimedia software to process each link when serving a page, so I'd rather avoid the redundancy of a link to Project Gutenberg for every item in the list. A manually constructed list which just mentions Project Gutenberg once is much cleaner and easier to grasp the meaning of.
Also, sometimes there is additional information that it may be desirable to add which may not fit into the template naturally. See Erewhon for an example which is slightly awkward. Andrew Sly 07:05, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Checking on articles I do for Wikipeda[edit]
I notice you did well improve on New Echota that I wrote for and better than me. I wonder if you can check on Adairsville, Georgia, Andersonville, Georgia, Battle of Adairsville, and Cculber007 to see if you can improve them. Check Andersonville National Historic Site, I believe this article needs to change to be same style like New Echota. Let me know. Thanks! I wodner if ic an add my picture to my user?

In honesty though, the only one I have any personal experience with is Andersonville NHS, and that was only a visit to the national cemetery there. "Nonfederal" or "private"?[edit]
You may be correct. I was assuming the situation that pertains at the Gettysburg National Military Park, where all of the land that is not owned by the Park Service is in fact privately owned; some of it is protected by easements so that it will not be developed in inappropriate ways. I misunderstood your message. Wow, I usually do better work than this. :-) OK, now I see that you're proposing these. I, for one, think the Wikipedians have gone WAY overboard in creating categories, trying to turn this into a relational database or something, whereas I think a better relationship with Google would be more satisfying for most readers. I try to keep up with the existing categories as a courtesty to the rest of the folks, but have never created any. As to your proposal, I think dividing US battlefields into CW vs non-CW is too nitpicky. I think categories are most useful when they can be used to help people browse around to topics of interest, not strictly define them. But that's just IMHO. Cape Henry[edit]
My thinking is that the various articles are each of very different types. Cape Henry itself is essentially a geography feature, Cape Henry Lighthouse = history and lighthouses, Fort Story = army base, etc. I restored the original Cape Henry article, and there are internal links to all the others, which are mentioned. The individual articles should contain more detailed information of each specific nature. My thinking is that readers researching may come across their article of choice by topic, an aspect that can be lost by too much merging. (ie, if i do a Google search for lighthouses, would articles named "Cape Henry Memorial" or worse yet, "Colonial National Historical Park" logically lead me to the oldest lighthouse? likewise, I sure wouldn't want someone looking for Fort Story information to have to find "Colonial National Historical Park".
IMHO, I think there is room in Wikipedia for each of these articles. However, I am part of the collaborative effort her, so we should entertain and consider arguments to the contrary. Good job[edit]
I saw your infobox addition to Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial and liked it...hadn't thought about putting one up. I added a cushion space between the infobox and the text to keep it from looking too congested. I recently went through all the full National Park articles and completed installing infoboxes there and every one of the wilderness areas I have either created or come across, I also have templated. Take a look at the spacing thing and you might also want to check the edit on a few of the national park articles and check out the template...it achieves the same thing and isn't so expansive looking on the editing page...but whatever works for you. See my userpage or for example Bob Marshall Wilderness...the infobox for wilderness areas omits visitation and I think one other detail as it is too difficult to judge visitation. You might also want to check out the hundreds of red lined links on the list of wilderness areas link at the bottom of the Bob Marshall Wilderness article and see that there is a vast number of unwritten articles...I've completed all the ones in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, and added the infobox to most of the already existing wiliderness articles aside from the ones in Colorado.--MONGO 18:30, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

It seems the information about naming of Berkeley California was in error. However, there was a Virginia county (now in West Virginia) and a town which many historians believe qualify. I know what you mean about the wrapping issue with the protected areas infobox. Between that issue and the fact that very few state parks are listed in the IUCN database, I instead opted to create a state park-specific infobox. --Kralizec! 18:38, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Not to bring this to your user talk, but was wondering what everyone has decided as to the template for the protected areas. I agree that coordinates should be D/M/S as precision is best. I backed off from using the wikimark which will be the "template" until someone that is good at developing such things (you) has it completed...or is it completed? - Eoghanacht, thanks for notifying me of your Protected Area discussion. I haven't been around very much lately, with vacations and work. I have no heartburn with you converting the template to Wiki markup instead of HTML. Even as a software developer, I just find the Wiki markup very confusing and especially difficult if you want to decode it in your head. I can never figure out what a Wiki mark template will do just by looking at it, and I certainly can't make one from scratch. It looks like the two can coexist peacefully, though, so that's good. The subtemplates shouldn't ever need to be changed, so even though I'm a fan of consistency, I wouldn't worry too much about converting them to Wiki markup. Mrendo 14:55, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I see your comment on my talk page. I have refrained from using any more of my efforts to do the cut and paste as I understand where I misunderstood the difference between that and what a template is...my bad. Let me know what to do and I'll go around and reupdate all those cut and paste mess ups I created! Catoctin Mountain[edit]
Hey there, Eoghanacht. I saw that you worked on the article for Catoctin Mountain but my major concern is that Catoctin Mountain like other ridges in the Appalachian ridge and valley region cross the Potomac River, and Catoctin is also in Loudoun County, Virginia. I was wondering if you would mind if I made Catoctin Mountain and Catoctin Mountain Park two separate articles since the park only deals with the Maryland side of the mountain. I agree that the is no one way to do things. Diceman can certainly use the infobox he wishes. The coordinates thing was I think what we used before, but what we have now works fine. I redid, I think, all the artilces on my userpage and still have to make sure everything works there. I'll assist you with the major parks as well as I have time. then I'll resume national forest, wilderness and since there is omething like a thousand redlined links to Fish and wildlife areas, along with the rest, that should keep everybody busy for some time! Well, I really do appreciate your support on my RfA! I'll make sure you know your choice was a good one. I've been keeping busy on the project, adding the templates, up to 5 a day, as time permits. I had trouble finding the creation date for George Washington and Jefferson National Forests so I have may have to write them and ask...bit I like to be throuogh. I'm not sure I get that destination thing...I'll have to look over that stuff again...hope I didn't mess anything up. Why didn't I take the time to call the forest...good idea and thanks for that. I try to do a few N.P.'s a week since I had gone around and put that old infobox in all of them, I should be the one having to redo them...I guess I need ot follow the format on the destination as you do it to ensure I don't mess them up again. Map of South Africa[edit]
Any idea where User:Papayoung and you got ther map for the U.S. and Australia that are used in the infobox...I got a guy from South Africa who may want to start doing articles from his country, but he'll need an image of that country that has the same appearance as the other two...you get my drift I'm sure. Template disclaimers[edit]

Oh no, I agree that they do create an ugly white space....I was just mentioning that the bottom disclaimer, right above the article text, doesn't seem to be messing anything up. But, in most cases, contributors to the articles will see that there is a template and will not mess with it so the disclaimers probably serve no purpose...so delete away!--MONGO 22:18, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Floyd[edit]
Thanks for your work on Floyd Collins. I used to be a fairly active caver, and have long been interested in Floyd's story. Last year I took my family and visited Mammoth Cave for the first time. We saw a park service presentation on Floyd Collins and saw Sand Cave. I had to read Trapped when we got back.
Your recent edit notes make it sound like you have a copy of the book? I see you've done some work on the part about the burials. Is the sequence there complete and accurate now? Also, something really should be said about the rescue efforts themselves, about the army's role, and about the fraud inquest held in Cave City. I'd borrowed the book from the library over a year ago and don't recall too many of the details about those aspects. -- Kbh3rd 03:30, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Punctuation[edit]
Hi Eoghanacht - no, punctuation always goes outside quotes, unless the punctuation is part of the quotation (e.g. "He said this. Then he said that."). It's in the wiki manual of style somewhere. PS while I'm on - on the Christmas tree page, I was reverting an IP number who'd messed up the species list; I've just found in doing so it appears I inadvertently (no idea how this happened - it wasn't intended!) removed the pic you'd added; I'll put it back, if I have time tonight or else 1st thing tomorrow unless you can get in first. Was also thinking the National Christmas Tree should perhaps be at United States National Christmas Tree as other countries might also have National Christmas Trees - MPF 01:00, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

I am working hard on trying to get Shoshone National Forest up to FA status. I have added substantially over the past couple of days and will also expand the biology, tourism, and recreation sections. Any imput would be appreciated, including any editing you feel it needs and or helpful suggestions. No obligation of course, but trying to get some dialogue on the talk page going and what not without submitting it to peer review and have a bunch of style mechanics rip it apart and end up losing valuable data.
