TOTP performance[edit]

I'd need to dig up sources for this before amending but IIUC it wasn't performed live but as live the day before transmission. I believe it was also more common than not for acts to sing rather than mime to records in this era due to various BBC/union agreements. Timrollpickering (talk) 11:06, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think you are right. Although this BBC source does says "live": [1]. But the Top Of The Pops article tells us that ".. in July 1966 .. after discussions with the Musicians' Union, miming was banned. After a few weeks during which some bands' attempts to play as well as on their records were somewhat lacking, a compromise was reached whereby a specially recorded backing track was permitted – as long as all the musicians on the track were present in the studio. The TOTP Orchestra, led by Johnny Pearson augmented the tracks when necessary. This set-up continued until 1980 .." There seem to be no backinjg track in use for that Jean Genie performance. But there is no way it would have been a "live broadcast" as such. 109.148.59.49 (talk) 11:43, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The story of the lost recording, on the BBC News at Ten, with short contributions by cameraman John Henshall and DJ Mark Radcliffe, can be found on YouTube at "David Bowie's lost 1973 performance of The Jean Genie - BBC News explains the discovery". But I can't link that clip here as that would encourage others to watch something that may be in breach of BBC copyright, allegedly. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:13, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As Music. Copyedit (minor)[edit]

The article is right about it is one of most popular songs. I think the reason for it is because of the lyrics and what I call the "chugging" bass guitar. Anyone know if it was an homage to Bo Diddley???User:JCHeverly 20:41, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
