untitled[edit]

I'm not really even a Black Sabbath or even a heavy metal fan, but Symptom of the Universe is highly notable. Perhaps the first "thrash metal" song ever, it introduced a guitar style years before anyone else picked up on it. If it can be established through references that this is one of the most notable songs on a gold-selling album by a bestselling band long recognized as genre pioneers, I think it goes without saying that the article deserves to stay. I'm not going to do that but I'm sure somebody can. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.52.155.191 (talk) 07:23, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notability issues? Really?[edit]

I don't have time presently to go source references - I have summer exams to revise for. But I can quickly summarise why this definitely qualifies as a notable release, and leave someone to go find the evidence:

  • As an album highlight, reviews often discussed this track - I'd guess this might be what saves the article's deletion
  • Song was deemed worthy of a single release. The album was a successful one - it went Gold stateside and Silver in the UK
  • The band went on to name a greatest hits set after the song, within the last decade - many years after the song's release
  • Song was included in a label-issued greatest hits set in 1992, and in one of the band's official hits sets in 2002
  • Alternative live versions of the song were released on Cross Purposes (1995) and Past Lives (2002)
  • Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne has performed the track live repeatedly as a solo artist, including it on live albums in 1982, releasing that version as a single
  • The song is seen as a vital influence on the sound of thrash metal
  • The song has been covered on releases by Helmet, The Melvins, Doom (UK Band), Sepultura, Stone, Candlemass, Orange Goblin
  • It has been performed live by Metallica, Candlemass, and Sepultura
  • Included in Sabbath's regular tour set-list for the following tours: 1975-1976, 1976-1977, 1978, 1986, 1994, 2005 (it was largely excluded 1997-2005 due to it being outside of Osbourne's vocal range, but was re-arranged to work as the core to an instrumental medley for the 2005 tour)

What else does it need to have done? (Chill (talk) 20:30, 12 May 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Progressive metal[edit]

Progressive metal should definitely be added to the song's infobox, since Tony Iommi says in his autobiography "[the song] is described as the first progressive metal song, and i won't disagree." He then goes on to describe why, talking about the song's contrasting sections and improvised parts. If this isn't reliable, nothing is. Y45ed (talk) 00:30, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This has already been addressed on your talk page. First of all, you are misrepresenting Iommi's quote from the book. He did not categorically state that he agreed with any claim that the song is progressive metal. What he said was, and I quote directly from book, "I won't disagree with that". That is not an endorsement or confirmation by any means, and it simply isn't enough to justify the genre addition. Remember to keep your opinion out of your editing. Additionally, Iommi's opinion is non-neutral, and opinionated sources can quite often be questionable. ChakaKongLet's talk about it 02:03, 8 September 2013 (UTC)7[reply]
I know it has, but on my talk page you suggested I start a discussion about it, so I did. I started another one here to see what other people think on the matter, since iv'e already discussed it with you. Y45ed (talk) 12:05, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Symptom of the Universe (song)Symptom of the Universe – The only other thing called "Symptom of the Universe" that is considered notable for Wikipedia is a compilation album named for this song. Therefore I request that this page be moved to Symptom of the Universe from Symptom of the Universe (song). JJPMaster (talk) 18:11, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
