Released recordings[edit]

The accompanying booklet to The Complete Recordings indicate that both takes were released on 78s. Both recordings, designated DAL 399-1 and DAL 399-2, are shown as being released on "Vo 04002" or Vocalion no. 04002 (p. 47). Apparently, this was also the case with "Ramblin' on My Mind", "Little Queen of Spades", and "Me and the Devil Blues" (p. 46–47). Unreleased alternate takes are noted "previously unissued on 78 r.p.m.", such as "Come On in My Kitchen" and "Cross Road Blues" (p. 46). I think this was also mentioned by Wald in Escaping the Delta: Robert Johnson and the Invention of the Blues, but no longer have access to the book.Ojorojo (talk) 14:06, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Update: As explained in the Centennial Collection booklet, LaVere now believes that the alternate takes were not issued on different 78 pressings (except for "Kind Hearted Woman Blues"). —Ojorojo (talk) 17:38, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

B-sides[edit]

Redrose64: Are Johnson's 78s designated "A-side" and "B-side"? The actual records are not marked as such and I don't recall this mentioned in his bios. At the time, there were no charts for blues records and their marketing didn't seem to push one side over another. It may be a minor point, but when both sides have articles, how do we decide which is which for their respective infobox entries? —Ojorojo (talk) 17:38, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We don't seem to have a parameter for "Other side" or "Flip side". According to the booklet of The Complete Recordings, "Stop Breaking Down" is matrix DAL 399 and "Honeymoon Blues" is DAL 401. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:46, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The matrix numbers assigned to identify individual song recordings are independent of catalogue numbers used to designate records when the songs are released. A- or B-sides should not be determined alphabetically, date recorded, or other arbitrary sequencing. Identifying the flip side in the article is sufficient and not necessary for the infobox when there is a question of accuracy. —Ojorojo (talk) 13:40, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
