Meaning of this song[edit]

"The song is about a woman who's having an affair, and her husband finds out and leaves her."

I don't think this is true. Rather, this song is about a woman who has married an older man for his money, and is now in a loveless marriage. She sneaks off and spends time with her boyfriend, and promises him that soon she will be leave her husband and be with him; however, both he and her husband know what she's really doing, and that she'll never ever really get out of her lies. 169.199.131.165 21:33, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. "She's heading for the cheatin' side of town" pretty much sums up that she's having an affair. I won't change it back, but I think it's clear. Also, "... she pulls away and leaves him with a smile," also indicates it. Why pull away if you're just spending time with someone. Obviously there is an embrace to pull away from. Subject matter[edit]

"Lyin' Eyes" describes a woman who, despite having the charms to woo any man of her choosing, chose to pursue a marriage to a rich old man for financial security; she bemoans the fact that her husband has "hands as cold as ice" and does not love her, so she instead pursues an affair on the other side of town. This man loves and pleases her, and she assures him that she will divorce her husband soon, but the complicated mess she has concocted brings her even more stress:

She wonders how it ever got this crazy...

Did she get tired, or did she just get lazy?

She's so far gone she feels just like a fool.

In the song's last verse, her mind drifts to yet another man, "a boy she knew in school." At this point, the perspective (up to this point told in third person) shifts to second person as the singer (presumably the boy from school) sees through the various lies she tells and has always told: "You're still the same old girl you used to be."

The radio and single edit removes parts of the second and third verses.
