Peculiarly, the video was initially banned by MTV on the grounds of being misogynistic as it did not have any women in it. Despite protests from the band's management and counter-accusation of homophobia as there were plenty of other videos of all-male groups on the channel which did not have women in them, or used them in a sexually objectifiying manner, the video was re-edited to have a black female (long-time Pet Shop Boys backing singer Sylvia Mason-James) dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

Similarity to Russian National Anthem

Go West sounds similar to the Russian national anthem (which is based on the Soviet Union National Anthem.VarunRajendran 08:14, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree, when I heard this I first thought it was Dschingis Khan or something, and that the intended audience was perhaps to listen to it on x-ray plates... And they'd all be like, Niet, Go East! Inspired by the song "There Is Nothing Like a Dame"

Is there a reliable source to back up this claim? While I have no doubt it is a Broadway chorus, the style is more like the Red Army Choir which fits perfectly with the overall theme of the PSB version. 59.167.50.63 (talk) 11:48, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Music video

The music video has nearly no connection to the LGBT society. The music video itself seems to be an irony of Gorbachev's ambitions to rebuild the Soviet Union in Western style (especially with introducing the market economy). Soviet National Anthem/Lyrics of 'Go West"

The melody of the song is identical to the Soviet National Anthem,and given the melody and the lyrics this song parodies the Soviet anthem, it is obvious that this song has politicial connotations, encouraging the people under soviet oppression to "look west", to escape the world east of the Iron Curtain. I am not sure this article makes it clear how the cover version of this song by the Pet Shop Boys fared in the U.K. Singles Chart. Vorbee (talk) 20:31, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

The chart at the bottom of the Pet Shop Boys section shows it reached #2. Is that incorrect? Rlendog (talk) 22:27, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
