Subtle Criticism of Fundamentalist Christianity?

Is there any evidence that "Coward of the County" is a subtle criticism of Fundamentalist Christian beliefs? In the song, we have a lifelong criminal who presumably makes a deathbed conversion to Christianity and then seeks to impose his religious beliefs on an impressionable young child. This leads to a lifetime of repressed emotions, an incorrect perception of weakness which leads to the rape of an innocent young girl, and explosive rage that results in serious injury or possibly death to the Gatlin boys. Is the purpose of the song to show what literal adherence to the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount might lead?John Paul Parks (talk) 04:50, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Can't the editor do better than : "he would have asked for the name to have been changed"?

Gatlin Boys Controversy

Bowling might have said there was no meaning behind it but I'm right now listening to an interview with Larry Gatlin on the Adam Carolla show and he talks about introducing himself to Bowling at a country music award show when they were up for the same category. This was it seems before Coward of the County was written. Larry went to introduce himself Bowling simply told him to "f-off". He has no idea why, but it would seem Roger had a problem with the Gatlin Brothers. So when he later wrote Coward of the Country and just happen to pick three brothers named Gatlin as the villians in the song, it's hard to believe that there was no intension!
