Traigh Mhor[edit]

Isn't this the name of the 'big beach' on Tiree? Could the photo actually be of Crossapol bay grid reference NM140530 ?---JBellis 20:28, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! The photo is my own and is definitely Coll not Tiree, but your comment has sent me scurrying for the map to check the name. And you are right: it is not Traigh Mhor. But it's not Crossapol either, it is the beach to the north of it "Traigh Feall". I will update the caption and the notes on the image page. Thanks Thruston 10:06, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Calmac link[edit]

Did name[edit]

According to McColl (surname) it is a surname of Irish origin, although no reference is provided. The island of Coll is most associated with Clan Maclean and McColl is not listed as one of their septs, so in most cases I doubt there is a direct link. Ben MacDui 10:59, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clan Maclean/Maclaine template.[edit]

The article accurately explains that the Macleans of Coll were an independent clan of Clan Maclean of Duart, however the template shows the Castle from the crest of Maclean of Mull, with the motto "Virtue mine Honour". The crest from the Maclean of Coll coat of arms (matriculated 1802) is a battle-axe between cypress and laurel in saltire. The motto is either "Altera Merces' or "Virtus Durissima Terit". There are correct public domain images on the web that should replace the current, but would like to hear opinions from anyone who disagrees.[reply]

What's it called?[edit]

Which is correct? Coll, Isle of Coll, isle of Coll, or the island of Coll? For example, in the sentence: Breachacha Castle, on the island of Coll, was held by the MacDonalds,Shipsview (talk) 21:31, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rǫgnvaldr Guðrøðarson, Rex Insularum (King of the Isle, Ri Inne Gall) from 1187 to 1226, is called Baile suthach síth Emhna (a praise poem addressed to him, Raghnall, King of Man. Calls Rǫgnvaldr Guðrøðarson:

§ 31: O Raghnall, o king of the island of Coll, all things can be found in your fair galley: the thin, cold wine of the Swan takes the anxiety of the ocean away from the crew. […]

with mention of the Isle of Mull: § 49: O son of Godred of the field of the island of Mull, your field will capture our attention; you take victory-spoils from Tráigh Bhaile [in Islay?] of the bright-ships to the shores of your house.
