Baddesley Clinton in BBC's Gunpowder[edit]

Despite the caption on the screen, the building shown was not Baddesley Clinton, nor was the interior. Their social media team confirmed this on Twitter. There are links now to several articles about the actual filming sites, but none match the exterior. If anyone finds where that was (and it looks nothing like the place), do please add it to the text. --gobears87 (talk) 18:03, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The outdoor scene captioned as Baddesley Clinton was actually Fountains Hall, on the same NT site as Fountains Abbey. I've updated the article. -- DeFacto (talk). 18:54, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks DeFacto - --gobears87 (talk) 19:59, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone wants to update the page and add more about the links with the Gunpowder Plot (mostly indirect) that would be great. I've not got time to do it. Here is a bit from the NT page and link plus a couple of helpful links for anyone wanting to have a go:

"Henry Ferrers let the house to the Catholic Vaux sisters between 1586 and 1591, and it was at this time that Nicholas Owen, the ingenious ‘priest hide’ builder was asked to install hiding places at Baddesley. This was a dangerous practice, as the 1559 Act of Uniformity made it treason to harbour a Catholic priests." from https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/baddesley-clinton/features/the-house-at-baddesley-clinton

I wonder do you know how are those sisters were related to Edward Vaux, 4th Baron Vaux of Harrowden? Martinevans123 (talk) 21:27, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think the point was that Anne Vaux lived at Baddesley and features in the tv series and has links to the plotters. Not sure how important he is - other than it says he was investigated? --gobears87 (talk) 21:47, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Elizabeth, Edward's wife, was the prime protector for John Gerard , but she was at Harrowden. So I guessing that Anne was related in some way. But I can find no mention of a sister. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:02, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It seems the sisters at Baddelsey were Eliza and Elizabeth: [1]. So perhaps just another branch of the Catholic Vaux family. Baddesley is about 75 miles from Harrowden. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:36, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure I read it somewhere legitimate (about Anne renting BC) but can't put my finger on it (might have been in something at the house, I last visited in Sept.). However there are a few blogs that confirm. Admittedly blogs are suspect but at least one of these - if not both - appear competently researched: (a) http://bitaboutbritain.com/baddesley-clinton-medieval-manor-murder-mayhem-and-mellowness/ and (b) http://supremacyandsurvival.blogspot.co.uk/2010/12/anne-vaux-and-gunpowder-plot.html and (c) http://www.gunpowder-plot.org/baddesley.asp [noted above]. A more trustworthy source is the NT's own site, and that confirms her tenancy here: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/the-raid-on-baddesley-clinton-remembered Finally, I checked Anne's ODNB entry, and it says her sister was Eleanor and they were the daughters of William, the 3rd baron. So, Edward the 4th baron was their step-nephew. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/28159, accessed 8 Nov 2017 Cheers --gobears87 (talk) 21:42, 8 November 2017 (UTC) p.s. the citation you used says clearly "In 1586, Henry Ferrers rented Baddesley Clinton to Anne Vaux, sister of the formidable Eliza, of a staunchly Catholic family." But obviously the "Eliza" is an error. It was Eleanor, presumably.[reply]
Many thanks, gobears87. How very thorough of you! Martinevans123 (talk) 22:30, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I'm a historian by profession so like to be sure of references etc. I'll just a dd one more thing: I noticed Eleanor has a DNB entry too and while Anne's doesn't mention Baddesley, Eleanor's does! "For two decades [Eleanor nee Vaux] Brooksby and [Anne] Vaux rented many properties for their own use and Garnet's, notably Baddesley Clinton, Warwickshire (1588–92)." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gobears87 (talkcontribs) 23:03, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, well that's very good. The family link to Elizabeth at Harrowden, the daughter of their step-nephew, is a bit distant. But it looks like they were doing very similar things and so probably part of the same network. Perhaps they knew each other very well! Martinevans123 (talk) 23:10, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

National Trust pilot[edit]

Hello! During late June, July and some of August, I'm working on a paid project sponsored by the National Trust to review and enhance coverage of NT sites. You can find the pilot edits here, as well as a statement and contact details for the National Trust. I am leaving this message when I make a first edit to a page; please do get in touch if you have any concerns. Lajmmoore (talk) 09:04, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
