Comments[edit]

There is still quite a lot of work needed to set up the directories and pages. Snowman (talk) 18:07, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have made the assessment page - see link in the new sidebar. The page statistics will be created when the bot is run, and then updated about every four or five days when the bot comes round again. It will list pages with the project banner. Snowman (talk) 13:02, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
WikiProject statistics now working and will be updated about ever four or five days automatically, the statistics appear on the "Assessment" page - see link in the sidebar. Snowman (talk) 14:41, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Warwickshire?[edit]

Just a quick suggestion to see if it is viable to send in a proposal for WikiProject Warwickshire. So, who'd be interested? - Erebus555 20:28, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Museums in Warwickshire[edit]

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Warwickshire. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Could you also add the new project banner "{{WikiProject Museums}}" to the Talk pages of the articles, so that we can identify those in need of work etc. Any help appreciated &, if anyone is interested you are welcome to join the project or discuss Museum related articles on the Project Talk Page.— Rod talk 14:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Assessment Page"[edit]

I noticed on your assessment page that there are many red links, presumaby just edited from another project's page. On of the links I can help with concerning the link to Category:Warwickshire articles with comments. For that to function the following (or similar) needs to be placed within your template.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:32, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I’m leaving a note here for anyone interested that Warwick Castle is currently a good article candidate. I’ve expanded it a lot from how it used to be and it could probably do with a copy edit from a fresh pair of eyes. There aren’t many articles on castles that are GA standard (Beeston Castle, Buckton Castle, and Halton Castle are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head) and the ones that are GA are not about castles as well documented as Warwick Castle so there’s probably more stuff to be added. It follows a simple structure heavily weighted on the history section, thoughts on whether this works would be welcome. I also have half an eye on lining this article up FA so would appreciate all and any input. Thanks. Nev1 (talk) 16:46, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just an update to say that the article was listed as a GA today and I've opened a peer review here. Feel free to drop by and leave your thoughts. Nev1 (talk) 22:43, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The peer review has been closed and Warwick Castle has been nominated at WP:FAC. Nev1 (talk) 15:01, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's been promoted. Nev1 (talk) 23:38, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Articles flagged for cleanup[edit]

Currently, 701 articles are assigned to this project, of which 91, or 13.0%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place the following template on your project page:

{{User:WolterBot/Cleanup listing subscription}}

Monarch's Way[edit]

Hi, Can I ask for some help, from the experts in this WikiProject, with the Monarch's Way article. It is a 615 miles (990 km) long-distance footpath in England that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles II in 1651 after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester to Shoreham-by-Sea and passes through the area covered by this WikiProject. The article is a stub at present but some of us are trying to expand it and give details of the route (along the lines of the South West Coast Path which is currently a GA). We are using Talk:Monarch's Way as a communal sandbox for this and if anyone was able to add description, settlements, places of interest etc along the route for their local area this would be really helpful.— Rod talk 12:46, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Warwick Castle again...[edit]

Warwick Castle will be featured on the mainpage on 10th September. Any help reverting the anticipated vandalism would be greatly appreciated. Nev1 (talk) 20:56, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for WikiProject Warwickshire[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Missing geographical coordinates[edit]

Many Warwickshire articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Warwickshire articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

There are about 127 articles missing coords - I hope you'll consider adding coordinates so as to make Warwickshire articles more visible on the web. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 20:17, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update. Articles needing coordinates have been placed into a category. 12 articles in Category:Warwickshire articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Warwickshire is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:26, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HMP Onley and HMP Rye Hill[edit]

Hi there, I really need some help with people who have local knowledge! I have recently created an article for Onley (HM Prison), and the prisons own entry on the official HM Prisons website states that Onley Prison and Rye Hill Prison are both situated in Willoughby, Warwickshire. However another editor (who says they live in the area) claims that the prisons are actually located just over the border in Barby, Northamptonshire. Although Onley Prison IS named after the Onley (lost settlement) which IS in Northamptonshire, nearly all sources found on a google search list the prisons as in Warwickshire. (A few just state that the prison is on the Warwickshire/Northamptonshire border. I actually called the prison today and they confirmed that while the prisons are on the county border, they are both situated in Warwickshire. However this other editor is pretty insistant, and weve reached an impasse.

Could really use a few other local people's views on this, or any tips as to where I could find a definative sourced answer on this. As it stands, the Onley prison article is very muddled at the moment. Bleaney (talk) 14:21, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like it is in Northamptonshire from the map. Take a look at this map where you can see the county boundary with Warwickshire to the left of the line and the prison over the boarder in Northamptonshire. Keith D (talk) 00:15, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, the map shows the prisons in Northamptonshire, but all written sources (including the BBC, and the Prisons own website) state that they are in Warwickshire. Would it be inappropriate to list the prison under both counties? Bleaney (talk) 00:28, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would think that there needs to be a note on the situation in the article so that readers know the position. Keith D (talk) 14:04, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am the "other editor" mentioned above and should like to thank Keith D for providing the link to the map, which does make it very clear that the prisons are in Northamptonshire. Why do prison service sources say they are in Warwickshire? I can only speculate that it suits their operational needs to do so – just as it suits Royal Mail to give Onley and Barby a Rugby, Warwickshire postal address. It is NOT true that "all written sources" state that the prisons are in Warwickshire. The majority may do so, but in this instance the majority are wrong. Many people (especially those without local knowledge) copy misinformation from other sources without checking it carefully.
I agree with Keith D: what's needed is to state the facts and try to explain the situation clearly – which is what my first contribution to the Willoughby page on 2 January 2009 attempted to do. In other words, we don't want anyone to think that, in order to reach the prisons, you need to divert off the A45 into Willoughby, or to visit Barby. I don't propose to amend the Barby page – although, as with the Willoughby page, I shall correct any misleading information which does get posted there. That apart, I'm now retiring from Wikipedia editing, with the exception of pages created by a contributor in the USA who has been unfailingly appreciative of my efforts. I've edited 3,000+ pages in the last year and created about six. Thanks, Bleaney: you motivated me to make this decision, by describing my work as "very slapdash". I can now concentrate on more rewarding pursuits and won't have to endure the ignoramuses and vandals who plague Wikipedia. Goodbye! NinetyCharacters (talk) 08:15, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry that you feel that way NinetyCharacters, i'm sure all your wiki contributions have been valid (as I hope mine have). My concern is that you have left the Onley (HM Prison) in a bit of a state, as you changed the location of the prison to Northamptonshire, but did not change the article's category, or amend the wikiprojects on the articles talk page, which leaves the article looking muddled. To be fair, I dont enjoy been called a vandal or an ignoramus either. I have been editing on wikipedia for nearly 2 years now, and have created over 30 articles, and many thousands of edits in that time. I'm sorry if my 'slapdash' comment has hurt you, but then being called an ignoramus doesnt excactly make my day full of sunshine either. Bleaney (talk) 14:16, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To resolve this, I have listed the prison under both locations and counties, and have explained the ambiguity of the prion's location in the introduction to the article. Bleaney (talk) 22:51, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Catagory[edit]

Articles about things in Warwickshire are placed in the wikiproject warwickshire catagory. shouldn't it pe placed in a catagory called catagory: warwickshire. De Mattia (talk) 08:18, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you confused with classification of the article pages and the talk pages? Snowman (talk) 12:07, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) The articles should be in Category:Warwickshire or one of its sub-categories and the talk pages should be in Category:WikiProject Warwickshire articles. The talk pages are categorised by the addition of the project template to a talk page and should not be placed directly in any categories. Hope that answers your query. Keith D (talk) 12:09, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good article section[edit]

We have a featured content heading.

Should we also have a good article heading.

De Mattia (talk) 20:02, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please tell stuff that needs to be done and I will try to do it

Good idea, the project has 4 GAs and that's worth mentioning. See Category:GA-Class WikiProject Warwickshire articles. Also, in case anyone is interested, Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, is at FAC. Nev1 (talk) 20:12, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There are also 2 FA articles in Category:FA-Class WikiProject Warwickshire articles that should be mentioned. Keith D (talk) 22:13, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Forget that as they are already mentioned. Keith D (talk) 22:15, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of stubs[edit]

Is there somewhere where I can find a list of Warwickshire stubs.

De Mattia (talk) 02:01, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dont worry, I just found it

De Mattia (talk) 02:02, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For anybody else with the same question, all the articles under the project that are rated as stub-class can be found at Category:Stub-Class WikiProject Warwickshire articles. Nev1 (talk) 02:57, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Am i allowed/Should I[edit]

Is there any critera for putting my name down as a participant of this project.

I have had my name on there for a day but now I have taken it off.

Should I put it back on

De Mattia (talk) 02:15, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are no criteria to being a member, you don't have to live in Warwickshire or even know anything about the county. Please feel free to re-add yourself. Is there any particular reason you took your name off the list? Nev1 (talk) 02:57, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank-you

De Mattia (talk) 04:35, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested articles page[edit]

Are there any requested articles for Warwickshire.

If so should we make a sub-page for them.

Stub worker[edit]

I am going to work on imroving all of the articles rated stub-class.

I might need some1 to go along behind and removed the stub ratings on those ones that are appropriate.

De Mattia (talk) 02:34, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's a big task you've set yourself, at the moment there are 366 stub-class articles, but certainly a commendable one. If you leave a notice on this talk page of articles you've worked over, project members should be able to help out with ratings, possibly more. Nev1 (talk) 02:57, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Your the best

Currently working on Admington but I am afraid that its a bit hard as I cannot find any information. I will work on another article.

De Mattia (talk) 04:36, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the work and all the best but, as Nev1 says, it is a big task as that is about 1 article a day for the next year! Keith D (talk) 13:28, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I wond get them all out of stub class but ill do as much as i can for a few of them De Mattia (talk) 20:05, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding good articles onto mainpage (project)[edit]

On the main page of this project there are the 2 featured articles.

Does anyone want me to create a heading underneath and put the 4 good articles. I will name the heading Good Articles or Good Content.

Or should i put it underneath the canditates.

De Mattia (talk) 04:53, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Candidates section relates to Featured content at the moment so I would go below that one for the Good articles. Though may be need a GA Candidates section below it as well. I would go with Good articles as a heading. The Featured content heading is probably named like that to catch both Featured articles and Featured lists, with so few it is better to have the 2 together. Keith D (talk) 13:15, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Leamington Spa rating[edit]

In our wikiproject leamington spa is only rated start quality.

in 3 other projects it is rated B class

oh and another question on (this link) is that table updated atomaticly when an articles quality is changed.

De Mattia (talk) 05:31, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The table of article counts gets updated by a bot about once a week when it goes through all projects creating new statistics. The table on the page is just a transclusion of the page Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/WikiProject Warwickshire articles by quality statistics which is the one that gets updated by the bot. Keith D (talk) 12:53, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I personally would rate it as a C-class article rather than a B-class, I think that the other 3 projects rated it before the introduction of a C-class to the grading structure. The reason for not being a B-class is that there are not enough references in the article, the lead section is rather short, there are far too many short sections and the long list of external links needs drastic pruning. Merging more information in, as suggested by tags, is probably not going to help the situation. Keith D (talk) 13:05, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested articles[edit]

Should we have a page that has all the requested articlesa for warwickshire. i mean all the ones in the articles that are red-linked.

If someone amkes it it would go like Wikipedia:Wikiproject Warwickshire/Requested articles

I already have a few

De Mattia (talk) 20:09, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And what are those new pages links halfway down the main page (which is linked to from the infobox as new pages

De Mattia (talk) 07:07, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Im working on it[edit]

i am now going to just edit Admington to try and get it out of stub class.

I would encourage the other people of this project to do the same thing with a different article.

De Mattia (talk) 08:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the rating of articles[edit]

am i allowed to change the rating of articles myself or does someone else need to do it.

i am saying this as i have just read the terms of START CLASS and i think that Admington is nearly there (what do you think]].

Also at this link it says that there are something like 241 unassessed articles. how do there get assessed as we need them to be assesed.

De Mattia (talk) 08:47, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone can change the ratings of an article up to B-class above that it needs to have more formal reviews to proceed to the higher rating levels. If you think that an article meets the criteria for a specific level then it can be changed.
On Admington it really needs the addition of an infobox, {{Infobox UK place}} is appropriate for settlements in the UK. Also rather an excess of External links for such a short article probably needs some references adding may be in place of the External links. Keith D (talk) 20:24, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

unassessed articles[edit]

i have been going through the unassessed articles and marking their class (start, stub etc).

i am allowed to do this arn't I

De Mattia (talk) 09:27, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Articles should be assessed by a bot, not by manual assessment or judgement, hence the incorrect assessment of Ilmington as a C class and almost a B, it is lucky to be start class —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.109.178.27 (talk) 14:20, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Service Stations[edit]

I am working on improving the standard of the UK Motorway Service station articles, and I'm wondering if anyone here can contribute any extra information to Corley services and Warwick services. At the moment they are rather short articles with little content, but I'm hoping to get every article up to the standard of Strensham services (Which I have nominated as a Good Article). Any help would be appreciated! Jenuk1985 | Talk 09:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How big for a start page quality[edit]

How big does a page have to be to really be start quality?

Am i ok with putting the quality ranking at start from unassessed articles if there are small but not tiny (reasonalbe size - you get a bit of information)

De Mattia (talk) 08:21, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do not go on the size only, but on the overall quality. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Warwickshire/Assessment for more information. Snowman (talk) 09:07, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinators' working group[edit]

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:58, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Uncreated articles page[edit]

I created a page in which everyone can add Warwickshire related article which have not been created. It can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Warwickshire/uncreatedarticles. Add any articles you think of or find red linked in a Warwickshire article. De Mattia (talk) 05:33, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Monitoring articles[edit]

I have set-up a watch list of the projects articles which can be used with the recenctchangeslinked special page. It is best to set-up a link like this [[Special:Recentchangeslinked/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Warwickshire/WatchAll|'''recent changes''']] somewhere you use for quickly accessing information. I have added one to the project page already. Click here to try it out. Keith D (talk) 12:21, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rewriting and researching Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, I noticed that he is not, unlike his brother, Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick, in your project. The article now contains a whole subheading "Warwick and Kenilworth". So, in case you are interested, have a look! Buchraeumer (talk) 18:03, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Popular pages[edit]

A tool is available for gathering statistics for the number of hits for the projects pages. An example output for the Yorkshire project is here. There is not yet a full months statistics available for the project but it is interesting to see usage of the information. Do members think that this would be useful information to have collected, may help in focusing on the most visited pages? Keith D (talk) 11:21, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Project watchlist[edit]

Hi, just to let you know that the project watchlist is out of date as I am unable to generate a new one since the changes to software last week. The script is giving errors trying to get the list of tagged articles. Hopefully I can get it resolved quickly but will have to wait on expertise of others. I will let you know when we are back up to date. Keith D (talk) 11:09, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist is back-up to date following changes to configuration. I managed to work out what to do from the scraps on WP:VPT. Keith D (talk) 11:31, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A user recently added information to the Kingsbury, Warwickshire article concerning the threat of closure to the village's school swimming pool.[2] I removed this as I didn't feel it was relevant to that particular article and the external link provided was problematic. But I added the information to the page related to Kingsbury School. [3] The information has since been readded a couple of times, [4] [5] and I have advised the editor that Wikipedia probably isn't the place for this sort of thing [6] I requested a third opinion, but the user remains unhappy and keeps argung his/her case [7] [8] so I'm taking tthe advice from WP:DISPUTE and asking about the subject. I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask about the relevance of this, but since it's a topic relating to Warwickshire I thought I'd try my luck. WP 1.0 bot announcement[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Railway article question[edit]

My question concerns an article about a now-dismantled railway in Warwickshire, one near my home that I know well.

The article is Leamington_to_Rugby_line and my question concerns the title. Can anyone here in WP:Warwickshire think of a reason why this article title is "Leamington to Rugby line"?

The railway was built as a branch from Rugby to Leamington, not vice versa: and when it was doubled, the work proceeded from the Rugby end. In railway operating terminology, the line ran down from Rugby to Leamington.

I think the title should be changed to "Rugby to Leamington line" to reflect the original construction and the terminology used by the LNWR, LMS and BR.

Any thoughts, anyone? Please reply on the article Talk Page Talk:Leamington_to_Rugby_line or to my Talk Page Andy F (talk) 17:53, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Warwickshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the WikiProject Warwickshire articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Sunday, November 14th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

If you have already provided feedback, we deeply appreciate it. For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 16:39, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to rename assessment categories for this project[edit]

Greeting WikiProject Warwickshire, it was noticed recently that of approximately 1660 WikiProjects yours was one of 11 that preceed the assessment categories with WikiProject. All the rest state only the subject (ex. Warwickshire vice WikiProject Warwickshire). In an effort to standardize the assessment categories and make it easier to identify the scope of articles we would like to change the assessment categories of your project from WikiProject Warwickshire to simply Warwickshire to be in-line with all the others. Before doing this we would like your input on this change to ensure that it meets the consensus of your project. --Kumioko (talk) 17:01, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Warwickshire Project page[edit]

Hello

While looking at WP:MILHIST i have seen that they have a graph on the main page under "What do we do" and it displays percentages of their articles with a coloured bar beneath, for example "10% of all articles rated B-Class or better: 80.8% complete". Would it be possible to have one of these on the project homepage to act as a goal related idea to focus the editors?

Thank you

Gavbadger (talk) 20:52, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just had a look at the bars. To have them here would be possible but you would need to define the targets for the project to measure against. E.G. 10 Featured Articles for the project, 20 Good Articles. Keith D (talk) 18:38, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I personally think the following would be acceptable:
5 Featured Articles
4 Featured Lists (Only have one at the minute, not too sure about)
25 Good Articles
10% of articles B class or better
But i believe a consesus should be reached within the members

2007 Atherstone on Stour fire[edit]

Can we put the 2007 Atherstone on Stour fire within the Priority articles - Topics of national significance section as the court proccedings started today and is getting coverage on BBC news amongst others.

RAF Gaydon[edit]

Hello, can we put RAF Gaydon in the to-do list please as half of it has been referenced ready for B-class review but currently having problems finding where one of the book references is located for the article and the car industry section is more or less unreferenced.

Gavbadger (talk) 23:55, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

William Perkins[edit]

I've done some substantial updating to William Perkins (Puritan) specifically to beef up the sources. I believe it may qualify for C class in your project now. Can someone please take a look.ReformedArsenal (talk) 23:38, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it fits with C-class. The lead is the weak part of the article see WP:LEAD for details. Keith D (talk) 01:16, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I revamped the Lede... can you take a look and see if you think it qualifies for B now? And if not, what else can I improve?ReformedArsenal (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Much better. I think you need to make inroads into the Cite needed tags in the article, get cites for most of those and it should meet B-class. Keith D (talk) 23:57, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done and done. Take another look!ReformedArsenal (talk) 14:22, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please help get Warwickshire ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September[edit]

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

  • The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
  • The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
  • The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
  • The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
  • Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
  • The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
  • References may be added according to normal WP practice.

For further information, please see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom.

If you have any queries, please post them not below but on the Organizers' help page on Commons.

Anything you can do to help improve these lists will be much appreciated. The final deadline for cleaning up is 31st August.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Old maps and views of the West Midlands[edit]

As you might have seen in the Signpost last week, there's currently a drive to go through the million 19th century images released by the British Library last year, and identify all the maps, with a view to their being georeferenced by BL volunteers, and then uploaded to Commons early next year. After the first week, over eight thousand new maps have been identified, with 40% of the target books looked at -- see the status page for the latest figures, and more information.

A part that may specifically interest this project is

c:Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - West Midlands

which currently shows pink templated links for 134 Flickr book pages still to be looked at. (Though there are lots of other parts of England, and indeed of the world, still to be looked through as well).

Any help looking through these would be very much appreciated -- as well as the maps (and ground plans) for tagging, you may well also find other interesting or useful non-map views that may be worth considering or uploading for articles on Warwickshire and elsewhere in the West Midlands. (If uploading, please use the ingestion template described here, which sets up some appropriate image templates and categories).

Thanks, Jheald (talk) 21:32, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sutton-under-Brailes[edit]

Was Sutton-under-Brailes moved from Gloucestershire in 1840 or 1844? As noted at Draft talk:Sutton-under-Brailes#Gloucestershire to Warwickshire different sources say different. User script to detect unreliable sources[edit]

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Brailes Hill[edit]

The article for Brailes incorrectly states that Brailes Hill is the second highest point in Warwickshire. If there are no objections, I will amend the article accordingly. Jameshh28 (talk) 19:25, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Project-independent quality assessments[edit]

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Proposed county infobox template change[edit]

A discussion is ongoing at Template talk:Infobox English county#Proposal: remove the ethnicity section which is likely of interest to this project. The original proposal is for straight removal of the ethnicity field from the template; the population field would remain. This and a modified proposal would have the same effect on Warwickshire. A result of the change, if consented to, is the restriction of demographics, other than population to the local authority administrative sections of the county infoboxes. It has no effect on editors placing reliably sourced statistics in the body of the article. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 10:48, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
