Museums in Warwickshire

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Warwickshire. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Warwick Castle

Hi, I’m leaving a note here for anyone interested that Warwick Castle is currently a good article candidate. I’ve expanded it a lot from how it used to be and it could probably do with a copy edit from a fresh pair of eyes. There aren’t many articles on castles that are GA standard (Beeston Castle, Buckton Castle, and Halton Castle are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head) and the ones that are GA are not about castles as well documented as Warwick Castle so there’s probably more stuff to be added. It follows a simple structure heavily weighted on the history section, thoughts on whether this works would be welcome. Monarch's Way

Hi, Can I ask for some help, from the experts in this WikiProject, with the Monarch's Way article. It is a 615 miles (990 km) long-distance footpath in England that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles II in 1651 after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester to Shoreham-by-Sea and passes through the area covered by this WikiProject. The article is a stub at present but some of us are trying to expand it and give details of the route (along the lines of the South West Coast Path which is currently a GA). We are using Talk:Monarch's Way as a communal sandbox for this and if anyone was able to add description, settlements, places of interest etc along the route for their local area this would be really helpful.— Rod ^talk 12:46, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Missing geographical coordinates

Many Warwickshire articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Warwickshire articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

• Warwickshire articles missing geo-coordinates.

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

Update. Articles needing coordinates have been placed into a category. 12 articles in Category:Warwickshire articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. HMP Onley and HMP Rye Hill

Hi there, I really need some help with people who have local knowledge! I have recently created an article for Onley (HM Prison), and the prisons own entry on the official HM Prisons website states that Onley Prison and Rye Hill Prison are both situated in Willoughby, Warwickshire. However another editor (who says they live in the area) claims that the prisons are actually located just over the border in Barby, Northamptonshire. Although Onley Prison IS named after the Onley (lost settlement) which IS in Northamptonshire, nearly all sources found on a google search list the prisons as in Warwickshire. (A few just state that the prison is on the Warwickshire/Northamptonshire border. I actually called the prison today and they confirmed that while the prisons are on the county border, they are both situated in Warwickshire. However this other editor is pretty insistant, and weve reached an impasse.

Could really use a few other local people's views on this, or any tips as to where I could find a definative sourced answer on this. As it stands, the Onley prison article is very muddled at the moment. Bleaney (talk) 14:21, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

I agree, the map shows the prisons in Northamptonshire, but all written sources (including the BBC, and the Prisons own website) state that they are in Warwickshire. Would it be inappropriate to list the prison under both counties? Bleaney (talk) 00:28, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

I am the "other editor" mentioned above and should like to thank Keith D for providing the link to the map, which does make it very clear that the prisons are in Northamptonshire. Why do prison service sources say they are in Warwickshire? I can only speculate that it suits their operational needs to do so – just as it suits Royal Mail to give Onley and Barby a Rugby, Warwickshire postal address. It is NOT true that "all written sources" state that the prisons are in Warwickshire. The majority may do so, but in this instance the majority are wrong. Many people (especially those without local knowledge) copy misinformation from other sources without checking it carefully.

I agree with Keith D: what's needed is to state the facts and try to explain the situation clearly – which is what my first contribution to the Willoughby page on 2 January 2009 attempted to do. In other words, we don't want anyone to think that, in order to reach the prisons, you need to divert off the A45 into Willoughby, or to visit Barby. I don't propose to amend the Barby page – although, as with the Willoughby page, I shall correct any misleading information which does get posted there. That apart, I'm now retiring from Wikipedia editing, with the exception of pages created by a contributor in the USA who has been unfailingly appreciative of my efforts. I've edited 3,000+ pages in the last year and created about six. Thanks, Bleaney: you motivated me to make this decision, by describing my work as "very slapdash". Sorry that you feel that way NinetyCharacters, i'm sure all your wiki contributions have been valid (as I hope mine have). My concern is that you have left the Onley (HM Prison) in a bit of a state, as you changed the location of the prison to Northamptonshire, but did not change the article's category, or amend the wikiprojects on the articles talk page, which leaves the article looking muddled. To be fair, I dont enjoy been called a vandal or an ignoramus either. I have been editing on wikipedia for nearly 2 years now, and have created over 30 articles, and many thousands of edits in that time. I'm sorry if my 'slapdash' comment has hurt you, but then being called an ignoramus doesnt excactly make my day full of sunshine either. Bleaney (talk) 14:16, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Adding good articles onto mainpage (project)

On the main page of this project there are the 2 featured articles.

Does anyone want me to create a heading underneath and put the 4 good articles. I will name the heading Good Articles or Good Content.

Or should i put it underneath the canditates.

The Candidates section relates to Featured content at the moment so I would go below that one for the Good articles. Though may be need a GA Candidates section below it as well. I would go with Good articles as a heading. The Featured content heading is probably named like that to catch both Featured articles and Featured lists, with so few it is better to have the 2 together. Leamington Spa rating

In our wikiproject leamington spa is only rated start quality.

in 3 other projects it is rated B class

oh and another question on (this link) is that table updated atomaticly when an articles quality is changed.

The table of article counts gets updated by a bot about once a week when it goes through all projects creating new statistics. The table on the page is just a transclusion of the page Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/WikiProject Warwickshire articles by quality statistics which is the one that gets updated by the bot. I personally would rate it as a C-class article rather than a B-class, I think that the other 3 projects rated it before the introduction of a C-class to the grading structure. The reason for not being a B-class is that there are not enough references in the article, the lead section is rather short, there are far too many short sections and the long list of external links needs drastic pruning. Merging more information in, as suggested by tags, is probably not going to help the situation. Keith D (talk) 13:05, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Changing the rating of articles

am i allowed to change the rating of articles myself or does someone else need to do it.

i am saying this as i have just read the terms of START CLASS and i think that Admington is nearly there (what do you think]].

Also at this link it says that there are something like 241 unassessed articles. how do there get assessed as we need them to be assesed.

Anyone can change the ratings of an article up to B-class above that it needs to have more formal reviews to proceed to the higher rating levels. If you think that an article meets the criteria for a specific level then it can be changed.

On Admington it really needs the addition of an infobox, {{Infobox UK place}} is appropriate for settlements in the UK. Also rather an excess of External links for such a short article probably needs some references adding may be in place of the External links. Keith D (talk) 20:24, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

How big for a start page quality

How big does a page have to be to really be start quality?

Am i ok with putting the quality ranking at start from unassessed articles if there are small but not tiny (reasonalbe size - you get a bit of information)

A tool is available for gathering statistics for the number of hits for the projects pages. An example output for the Yorkshire project is here. There is not yet a full months statistics available for the project but it is interesting to see usage of the information. Hi, just to let you know that the project watchlist is out of date as I am unable to generate a new one since the changes to software last week. Kingsbury, Warwickshire

A user recently added information to the Kingsbury, Warwickshire article concerning the threat of closure to the village's school swimming pool.[2] I removed this as I didn't feel it was relevant to that particular article and the external link provided was problematic. But I added the information to the page related to Kingsbury School. [3] The information has since been readded a couple of times, [4] [5] and I have advised the editor that Wikipedia probably isn't the place for this sort of thing [6] I requested a third opinion, but the user remains unhappy and keeps argung his/her case [7] [8] so I'm taking tthe advice from WP:DISPUTE and asking about the subject. I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask about the relevance of this, but since it's a topic relating to Warwickshire I thought I'd try my luck. Railway article question

My question concerns an article about a now-dismantled railway in Warwickshire, one near my home that I know well.

The article is Leamington_to_Rugby_line and my question concerns the title. Can anyone here in WP:Warwickshire think of a reason why this article title is "Leamington to Rugby line"?

The railway was built as a branch from Rugby to Leamington, not vice versa: and when it was doubled, the work proceeded from the Rugby end. In railway operating terminology, the line ran down from Rugby to Leamington.

I think the title should be changed to "Rugby to Leamington line" to reflect the original construction and the terminology used by the LNWR, LMS and BR.

Suggestion to rename assessment categories for this project

Greeting WikiProject Warwickshire, it was noticed recently that of approximately 1660 WikiProjects yours was one of 11 that preceed the assessment categories with WikiProject. All the rest state only the subject (ex. Warwickshire vice WikiProject Warwickshire). In an effort to standardize the assessment categories and make it easier to identify the scope of articles we would like to change the assessment categories of your project from WikiProject Warwickshire to simply Warwickshire to be in-line with all the others. WikiProject Warwickshire Project page

Hello

While looking at WP:MILHIST i have seen that they have a graph on the main page under "What do we do" and it displays percentages of their articles with a coloured bar beneath, for example "10% of all articles rated B-Class or better: 80.8% complete". Would it be possible to have one of these on the project homepage to act as a goal related idea to focus the editors?

Please help get Warwickshire ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Old maps and views of the West Midlands

As you might have seen in the Signpost last week, there's currently a drive to go through the million 19th century images released by the British Library last year, and identify all the maps, with a view to their being georeferenced by BL volunteers, and then uploaded to Commons early next year. After the first week, over eight thousand new maps have been identified, with 40% of the target books looked at -- see the status page for the latest figures, and more information.

A part that may specifically interest this project is

c:Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - West Midlands

which currently shows pink templated links for 134 Flickr book pages still to be looked at. (Though there are lots of other parts of England, and indeed of the world, still to be looked through as well).

Any help looking through these would be very much appreciated -- as well as the maps (and ground plans) for tagging, you may well also find other interesting or useful non-map views that may be worth considering or uploading for articles on Warwickshire and elsewhere in the West Midlands. (If uploading, please use the ingestion template described here, which sets up some appropriate image templates and categories).

Was Sutton-under-Brailes moved from Gloucestershire in 1840 or 1844? As noted at Draft talk:Sutton-under-Brailes#Gloucestershire to Warwickshire different sources say different. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Brailes Hill

The article for Brailes incorrectly states that Brailes Hill is the second highest point in Warwickshire. According to Ordnance Survey mapping, the highest points in Warwickshire are as follows: 1st: Ebrington Hill near Ilmington (261m). 2nd: South Hill near Little Compton (248m). 3rd: Whichford Hill (239m). 4th: Brailes Hill (232m). Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Proposed county infobox template change

A discussion is ongoing at Template talk:Infobox English county#Proposal: remove the ethnicity section which is likely of interest to this project. The original proposal is for straight removal of the ethnicity field from the template; the population field would remain. This and a modified proposal would have the same effect on Warwickshire. A result of the change, if consented to, is the restriction of demographics, other than population to the local authority administrative sections of the county infoboxes.
