Japanese historical periods

I noticed that there are various ways of defining historical periods. General history seems to use those periods of Template:History of Japan, art history has Hakuhō period (and possibly other dates and some other periods), in history of swords, there are jokoto, koto, shinkoto, shinshinkoto, gendaito, etc. Would it be feasible and interesting to collect these various definitions in an article Japanese historical periods? Is anybody interested in helping to create this article? bamse (talk) 10:21, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

I think that's a splendid idea. 76.66.195.196 (talk) 21:57, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you know of other fields that have their own historical periods? bamse (talk) 07:50, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
ja:日本史時代区分表 may be a good place to start. 114.160.57.216 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:15, 6 July 2010 (UTC).
Thanks for the link (which makes it more complicated than I thought). Initially I just thought about discussing the main periods ("Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku"-column) and other periodizations as used in other fields such as in arts or sword appreciation. It seems that we also need to include geographic differences. Basically, what I would like the article to look like is: sections with headings ("General History", "Arts and Architecture/Culture", "Swords",... are there more?); each section should contain the names of various periods, their start and end date and which event defines these dates (for instance: move of capital defines the Nara period->Heian period transition, etc.). Not sure how to arrange this information: in table format or as prose together with a timeline. bamse (talk) 10:30, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
I made a rough start at User:Bamse/Japanese historical periods. Feel free to add/modify it. bamse (talk) 11:44, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Flora and fauna task force

I've set up a flora and fauna task force for those who wish to work with articles about plants and animals in Japan. You can tag articles by adding |fauna=yes or |flora=yes to the {{WikiProject Japan}} banner on the talk page of each article. Feel free to add yourself to the list of participants. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 18:28, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

On a related note, I've simplified the participants listings to make them easier to modify (especially when adding a new task force--the table was becoming very unwieldy), add, and remove. Please let me know if you have any questions. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 23:56, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Jujutsu article title

An ongoing discussion on which romanisation to use for the title of jujutsu. --Natet/c 12:36, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Nitto Records

Nitto Records, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nitto Records. I think this is notable and useful, there is even a Japanese article on it, it just needs help, please pitch in! Thank you. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you all for helping improve the article!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:53, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Can we get a better name for this one?--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:52, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Romaji of non-Japanese words written in Katakana

A discussion concerning the use of romaji for non-Japanese words written in katakana has been under discussion at WT:MOS-JA#WP:VG/GL#Non-English games. Input from this project is requested.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 16:29, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Move Joe

Why is Jōe at Jo-e and not at Jōe (which redirects to Jo-e)? bamse (talk) 06:47, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

That makes no sense. I'd say just go ahead and move it. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 12:02, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
I agree. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 14:07, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Goban kaji

Resolved

What is a good translation for goban kaji (御番鍛冶), the swordsmiths working at the palace of Emperor Go-Toba? "Honorable smiths", "honored smiths" or something else? bamse (talk) 08:24, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Bamse. I found several sources:
  • 番鍛冶: Turnus-Schmiede[1] I 'm sure you can read German.
  • 隠岐番鍛冶: the rotation smiths of Oki[2]
  • Ban-kaji: smiths who worked in rotation[3]
In this case ban means "(monthly) rotation". go is honorific as you already know.

Tokai earthquakes

FYI, the new article Tokai earthquakes was prodded for deletion with the reasoning that the redirect Tokai Earthquake went to another article. I deprodded the article, but it needs work, since it should either merge into Nankai megathrust earthquakes or fix both articles to conform to the existence of two articles, and not one. 76.66.193.119 (talk) 03:14, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Hayao Miyazaki

The bot listing PR requests is down so I wanted to let everyone know I've asked for a PR for Hayao Miyazaki so that it can be brought up to GA and eventually FA quality.Jinnai 22:44, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Ayanokoji, Kyoto

Writing about the Ayanokoji school (Yamashiro Province) of swordmanship for List of National Treasures of Japan (crafts-swords) and was wondering what Ayanokoji refers to. I know that it is a place name in Kyoto where the smith Sadatoshi lived. But is it a street, a temple, a district or something else? Any Kyoto experts around? bamse (talk) 21:36, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

It's a street . (map) A hundred meter south of Shijō Dōri. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 22:55, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you know if it existed in the 13th century? Or rather, could (in the 13th century) Ayanokoji have been something else besides a street? bamse (talk) 21:54, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
It is the street of Heian-kyō. You can find the name (綾小路) in the Heian-kyō#Schematic diagram of Heian-kyō along with Sanjō-Ōji (三条大路) and Shijō-Ōji (四条大路). The word "kōji" (小路) means "alley". "Ayanokōji"" means "Aya alley". While the word "Ōji" (大路) means more broader "street". ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 22:49, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Wow! Thanks a lot! bamse (talk) 23:00, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

RFC on romanization of loanwords

There is currently an RFC taking place concerning the romanization of English loanwords in the Japanese language. Input from members of this WikiProject is requested to form a consensus.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 20:41, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Kiku-ichimonji

What or who is Kiku-ichimonji? The article Kiku-ichimonji says that these are the swords made by the swordsmiths who were in attandance at Emperor Go-Toba. On the other hand, this book on page 99 says that it is just another name for the smith Norimune. Who is correct? Kiku-ichimonji = swords or Norimune? bamse (talk) 22:23, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Article was improperly moved, please help so attribution history is not destroyed.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:09, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

The best thing to do would probably be to post on WP:RM and let an admin there handle it. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 12:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Which article was improperly moved? Both? I can fix it, but need to know which. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 16:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

The Cove (2009 film) claims in "production" section

I am suspicious of a few lines in the opening 'production' section of the movie "The Cove" which have been added out of style with the rest of the article. There are some spurious claims which are supported by one reference which is in Japanese so I cannot read it. Please would someone be kind enough to translate?:

^ a b 『エコテロリスト(?)の〝だまし討ち”に収まらない怒り 映画『ザ・コーヴ』上映パニック 和歌山県太地町イルカ・クジラ漁師を直撃!』(週刊プレイボーイ2010年7月5日号 p52~p54)

The offending paragraph:

"The film crews used insulting English words and gestures that locals were able to understand, threw pebbles at locals, put a handy video coder directly on locals face, told locals that Japanese penises were the smallest in the world. When the locals became angry, the film crews fell down and started to cry in pain"

Unless someone has a copy of the magazine, we don't have any way to check up on the reference. It's in an article whose title translates as something like "Ecoterrorist's sneaky tactics unsettled anger film The Cove screening panic: Scores a direct hit at Wakayama Prefecture's Taiji Town dolphin and whale fishermen". Based on the title and the magazine, I wouldn't be surprised if the content of that quote is correct. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 16:56, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't have a copy of the magazine. But a NHK program says a similar thing. See 4:07 and the movie's fabrication. Oda Mari (talk) 19:40, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
