Dear Venezuelan(y) users: Take two minutes to breath and clear the mind. Done? (Seriously do it) We are having the longest and messiest discussions in the Venezuelan articles since the beginning of the 2019 crisis. Remember January? when media outlets were focused on Wikipedia because of the struggling edit wars on Guaido's article? That was nothing compared to now. Translations

I have been thinking this for a while: could a cooperation be started to translate articles about Venezuela in Spanish and vice versa? I usually create articles in Spanish rather than in English, and in sight of the activity that there has been I supposed it could be notified each time an article is created; I guess it would be sort of like reactivating the Requested articles tab. It would be interesting doing the same thing viceversa, and we have a new articles tab to keep track of Venezuelan articles. --Jamez42 (talk) 18:17, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Translations of what kind? Of politics, culture, geography? What Sandy is saying is a problem, but we can see problem of lack of sources in articles of Venezuela in English, we, as a society have an structural problem of lack of sources, specially online sources around so much topics that makes really difficult to start a new articles, in that sense Wikipedia has become the 'de facto' source in many fields, and we have seen the backlash of that this year with the censorship.
One of our first projects back in 2014 was translate Wikipedia, we can do something similar with more oversight over quality this time around. --Oscar_. (talk) 23:29, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

A-class review

Stepping away from politics (as much as possible, at least), I was thinking of opening an A-class review. Articles that are A-class are the step between GA and FA, meaning they should be very good; this is typically decided in review at the appropriate WikiProject. I'm thinking of putting Un célebre especialista sacando muelas en el gran Hotel Europa up for FA when I have the time to go through the process fully. After being made a GA, it has seen a peer review with all the points actioned, as well as some other touch-ups, so I think an A-class rating is not out of the question while I prepare for FA nom. For anyone who would like to take a look, A-class criteria is here. We could also set up a review process at WP:Venezuela/Assessments, if there's a level of interest in expanding Venezuela articles. The parliamentary 16 July Fraction denounced a "burocratic dilation to rejoin TIAR", although I haven't had the time to listen to the declaration. Those are the deputies that support the most a military intervention and believe that actions should be taken quickly, having a sense of urgency. I finally managed to listened to it. The deputies basically state that instead of being approved right away, the request was delegated to the Committee of Foreign Affairs. I would love to have a seperate article. I remember some time ago the addition was disputed because of the disagreement where to add the list. Back then there was a suggestion to create an article such as "Presidency of Juan Guaidó" or something similar. In any case, I suggest that if we create an article of the list, we also create a section about the date of the appointments, and possibly a brief background of the ambassadors. --Jamez42 (talk) 10:08, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

AN decree on passports

I updated 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis to add the new information of Guaido's decree on passports. According to this article of El Pitazo, there are more countries that recognize the expired passport [4], also Efecto Cocuyo [5] and [6]. Let us wait for English sources on this matter. Probably more updates will come during the following weeks on Guaido's decree and the countries accepting it. If you got anything please leave a source here. How to revert an archive? (30April2019)

In Talk:2019 Venezuelan uprising a bot has tried twice to archive the first move discussion [10] I have tried to revert this change [11] twice. For the more advanced users:

  1. is this the right way to revert archiving? I think a copy of the discussion is still being created in the archive
  2. how do I stop the bot from archiving a particular section?

As I stated in the Spanish page, there is no mention to Boves' Legion of Hell (Spanish: Legión Infernal) in Wikipedia. I started a draft for RV-1 nuclear reactor. I have found some issues
  • Sources in English exist (but are not online)
  • The claim that RV-1 is the first nuclear reactor of Latin America, as stated by Sociedad nuclear de Venezuela and the IVIC, seems vague as RA-1 Enrico Fermi exists.
  • Marcel Roche has many important articles about the reactor (see the two at the end of page 24 here [13]) but are not online
  • Newspaper articles about the renewal of the reactor are no longer accesible (El Nacional/Universal 2001)

Good sources for local Venezuelan coverage

This has been transcluded from User:Kingsif/Venezuelan sources. The relevant talk page is here.

  1. Efecto Cocuyo - founded by independent female journalists who have all been threatened by the government, its director has won a press freedom award and was one of the "Guardians" profiled as TIME Person of the Year 2018. Furthermore, no area of the country or news story seems too small, meaning they likely have coverage of just about anything, with multiple updates daily and an easy-to-navigate site.
  2. La Patilla - one of the most popular websites in Venezuela, operated by the former CEO of Globovisión, but regularly censored so may be inaccessible.
  3. Prodavinci - this is the "one-stop shop" for analytical journalism by politicians, historians, and various other professionals; it also has quite a strict attitude against opinion pieces.
  4. El Pitazo - its director is widely seen as the best journalist in the country, it does cover daily news but is more notable for its award-winning long form multimedia reports on the state of the nation; this is particularly good for statistics and analysis.
  5. Armando.Info - investigative journalism in Venezuela cannot be beat by independent site armando.info - they're the Bellingcat of the country.
  6. El Nacional - comprehensive in all areas, respected internationally.
  7. El Universal - very similar to El Nacional.
  8. VPItv - a sidekick to the large rebel alliance, with the downside that as a largely video-based service (operating mostly on YouTube when it becomes inevitably blocked) it may not always be seen as reputable.
  9. Caracas Chronicles - technically a blog, but run by respected journalists and often has interviews with people in the news, and it's all in English.
  10. Cinco8 - CC's Spanish-language sister.
  11. Tal Cual
  12. El Nuevo Herald and Miami Herald - Miami based newspapers that have good coverage of the diaspora in the area.
  13. Runrunes
  14. El Estímulo
  15. VIVOplay
  16. Voice of America & Voz de América - note that there are two fields of coverage in Venezuela, one that is independently run, and the other which has its main presenter/host who also explores Madurismo perspectives. However, he's a good journalist and handles it neutrally, so this only needs to be given a question of bias (rather than avoiding).
  17. Aporrea - government supportive but, in news (avoid the opinion pieces), it does not have the insert of opinion that other Maduro-supporting sources do, so is more reliable than those for plain information on government-aligned people. Has had more editorial independence recently, so it shouldn't be completely ruled out of unbiased consideration.

The numbers are not an indication of ranking, but to allow for identification; however, Aporrea placed at the bottom may be considered the least reliable. Most sources, on this list, will be of a standard "reliable" rating where they are equal - those closer to the top may be easier to access for those outside of Venezuela. This list only includes sources with a Wikipedia page, allowing users to visit the page and further inform themselves on how reliable they believe it may be.

How to make more people involved?

I find Wikiprojects very useful. You meet users that know the subject and get alerts related to articles that have problems. The problem is that the average newcomer does not know about it. I got into Wikiprojects during a discussion that ping me to one of the projects. What do you think should be a good way to make this project more active and reachable? Ad-like messages might work, I don't think they're a bad thing at all. If you want something to send out, invitation templates are good - this is one I made on the suggestion of Jamez42 that's quite simple, so it would only need some tweaks to work for this if you wanted to send one out. On Bachelet visit

I just updated 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis on Bachelet visit [15]. I added two things which maybe need better confirmation: (1) Bachelet didn't come alone, did she? I thought it was a commission with her but English sources do not reflect that. (2) According to Bloomberg, Bachelet said that recent sanctions have worsened the country, but they started in 2003, do you got any other source on that? --MaoGo (talk) 15:53, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

I've made some minor changes for correctness, so as not to confuse people. And:
1. She didn't come alone, but English-language sources (based on socio linguistics of the UK and US) generally reduce a unit to its figurehead (i.e. calling the Republicans "Trump" or the EU "Juncker")
2. Bloomberg is reliable, in case it isn't anywhere else

Thanks for the edit, my comment was written in a rush. (1) I changed the wording in the article [16] because I cannot find a source that sustains that claim. (edit conflict) When Bachelet held the meeting with the political prisoners, she is seen with other persons. She also mentioned that two officials would stay in Venezuela to continue receiving complaints of human rights violations, but I don't know if there are specifics of wherever she was accompanied with UNHCHR officials or simply escorts, and I'm not sure if there are details regarding this on the media or if there will be.
During her press conference, Bachelet said Me preocupa que las sanciones impuestas este año por Estados Unidos sobre las exportaciones de petróleo y el comercio de oro están exacerbando y agravando la preexistente crisis económica., "I worry that the sanctions imposed this year by the United States on oil exports and gold trade is worsening the preexisting economic crisis." This is essentially the same position stated in the oral report given months ago, where she expresses concern but recognizes that the crisis precedes the sanctions. --Jamez42 (talk) 17:23, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

  • WaPo states that Maduro is proposing presidential elections in exchange of having the sanctions removed

  • PetroChina cancelled a deal with Venezuela Bloomberg

Carlos Cruz-Diez is still missing

A serious copyright infringement was found in Carlos Cruz-Diez article the day of his death. How can we look up if somebody is doing something about it? if not, a new article from scratch is necessary. There's a page for copyright infringement checking, someone will be on it within a few months. Within the report, on the page, you can see what sources are under investigation - you can then do a check yourself and remove that source and info if necessary. Idea: WP VEN improvement edit-a-thon/contest

When updating selections for the Venezuela portal, I've noticed that there are very few featured and good quality Venezuela-related articles - and some of these are barely related at all. So I thought, to promote improvements to the pages covered by the Wikiproject, we could have an edit-a-thon or contest (examples by other WP's) for quality improvements to articles. Incentives could be userbox icons based on how many classes you've improves articles by collectively - classes because it's easy to rack up 10 already ok articles where cleaning layout takes it from C to B-class, but it's harder to get a stub article to B class. And, because this would ideally be ongoing, perhaps a different theme of article every month to keep it interesting?

Hey, yes, we already have the noticeboard that gives one unreferenced biography and one important article that isn't a GA or above each month. But most of the time it's very easy for to at least add some refs to the biography and half the below-GA articles aren't appropriately rated in the first place, so it's not a particularly useful tool for improvements. There may be a better way to select and promote these to improve the quality of Venezuela-related content! Kingsif (talk) 10:33, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for invite me to improve articles, however, english is not my mother language and i think that my level is not so good to help, however, I could add some image or reference. Also, my NPV is diverted and supporting everything that is against the current dictatorship in my country, so, my biased vision could cause me a block (like the temporary block to which I was subjected in Wikipedia in Spanish and that made me take the voluntary decision not to edit on Wikipedia in Spanish).
