Misnested tags, missing end tags, stripped tags[edit]

On 17 March 2021, Morriswa created Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Redirects/Alaska/Route list. From a discussion on that page's talk page, we know that she created it by copying markup from a subpage from some state/territory page, but she doesn't remember which one. This template is generating misnested tags and stripped tags lint errors. For example, in Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Redirects/Alaska, *{{/Route list|98}} expands to *{{Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Redirects/Alaska/Route list|98}}, which expands to

If not for the asterisk, ... would be OK, but because of the asterisk, the opening  is within a <li>...</li> generated by the asterisk, while the closing  is outside <li>...</li>. This can be fixed either by moving the  to start on the line after the file(s), or by removing all of the line breaks. The stripped  at the end of the first line is obvious in this case; the code will have to be rewritten to tighten the matching of opening and closing ... tags. Similar problems exist for Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Redirects/Nebraska/Highway list and Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Redirects/Puerto Rico/Highway list. The only reason I know about these three "templates" is that they are called from other Wikipedia namespace "templates" listed at Lint errors: Multiple unclosed formatting tags. Someone who knows what's going on should be able to fix the Alaska route list "template", and once that is done, the fix should be propagated to related "templates" in this project. —Anomalocaris (talk) 00:46, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
